Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This free knitting pattern creates a seated or flat-display style frog doll like the photo. The body is knitted in separate pieces, stuffed firmly, then sewn together. The dress is worked as a removable pinafore with colorful horizontal stripes, shoulder straps, button details, and two flower-pattern bands.

The frog has a large rounded head, a slightly smaller body, long straight legs, narrow arms with three-finger hands, oversized raised eyes, black eyelashes, embroidered nostrils, smiling mouth line, and padded red lips. The accessories are also knitted: wide-brim sun hat, sunflower decoration, basket bag, strawberries, apple, carrot, sandals, and tiny flower accents.

Finished Size

  • Frog height: about 12 in / 30 cm from top of eye bump to sandal sole.
  • Head width: about 5 in / 12.5 cm across the cheeks.
  • Dress length: about 5 in / 12.5 cm from front bib to hem.
  • Hat diameter: about 5.5 in / 14 cm.
  • Basket bag: about 2.5 in / 6.5 cm wide, excluding handle.

Skill Level

Confident beginner to intermediate. You should know how to knit in the round, increase, decrease, change colors, work simple stranded colorwork, make I-cord, sew knitted pieces neatly, embroider small details, and shape stuffed toy parts.

Yarn and Materials

  • Main frog yarn: worsted weight yarn in bright leaf green, about 130 yd / 119 m.
  • Dress yarn: fingering or sport weight yarn in white, pale blue, yellow, pink, coral, mint, and lavender.
  • Accessory yarn: cream, tan, brown, red, orange, dark green, yellow, black, white, blue, blush pink, and light purple.
  • Needles: US 3 / 3.25 mm double-pointed needles for the frog and accessories.
  • Needles for dress: US 2 / 2.75 mm circular or double-pointed needles.
  • Stuffing: polyester fiberfill.
  • Eyes: black felt circles or black yarn for knitted pupils. This pattern uses knitted eye pieces.
  • Extras: tapestry needle, stitch markers, removable markers, pins, scissors, two tiny yellow buttons, and optional blush powder.

Gauge

  • Frog body gauge: 24 sts and 32 rnds = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette in the round.
  • Dress gauge: 28 sts and 36 rnds = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette.
  • Accessory gauge: exact gauge is less important, but stitches should be tight enough so stuffing does not show.

Use a smaller needle if your stuffing shows through the fabric. A firm knitted toy looks smoother and keeps the frog’s rounded head, slim limbs, and raised eye bumps closer to the shape in the picture.

Construction Notes

The frog is made from knitted pieces. The head, body, arms, legs, and eye bumps are knitted in the round. The mouth is embroidered after shaping, and the lips are made as two small red padded ovals. The dress is knitted separately from the bottom hem upward, so the skirt flares slightly and the bib sits neatly under the chin.

The hat, bag, fruit, carrot, sandals, and hair decorations are small knitted accessories. Sew all accessories after the frog is assembled so you can place them in the same visual balance as the image: hat on the left, basket on the lower left, fruit near the head, carrot on the lower right, and strawberries above the right eye.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew the body to the lower center of the head. The head should sit large and proud above the narrow neck.
  2. Sew the eye bumps to the top of the head, spaced about 1.5 in / 4 cm apart. Tilt each bump slightly outward.
  3. Sew the white eye ovals onto the front of the bumps.
  4. Sew the blue irises onto the lower inner area of the white ovals.
  5. Sew the black pupils on top of the blue irises, leaving blue visible around the edge.
  6. Sew the arms to the upper sides of the body, just below the head. Let them angle downward.
  7. Sew the legs to the bottom of the body, spaced evenly so they hang straight under the dress.
  8. Slide the dress over the body from the feet upward. Adjust the bib under the chin.
  9. Sew or button the shoulder straps to the front bib.
  10. Sew sandals to the feet, then add the purple sandal flowers.
  11. Add lips, cheeks, nostrils, smile, lashes, and final face details.
  12. Attach the strawberry stems and white flower above the frog’s right eye.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Place the facial features before sewing permanently. The eyes should look large and bright, with the pupils slightly toward the center for a sweet expression. The smile curve should pass behind the red lips and rise gently into the pink cheeks.

Use small, even stitches when attaching the lips and cheeks. For the cleanest result, hide knots inside the head by entering and exiting through the back of the head. Pull yarn gently, not tightly, so the face does not pucker.

  • Check that both eye bumps are level from the front view.
  • Check that the mouth sits centered between the cheeks.
  • Check that the dress hem flares evenly around the legs.
  • Check that the hair strawberries stand upright and do not pull the eye bump down.

Care Notes

This knitted frog is best used as a decorative handmade toy. If it is made for a child, embroider all facial details instead of using buttons or hard parts. Sew every accessory securely and check seams often.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if the doll has small sewn accessories.
  • Lay flat to dry on a towel.
  • Reshape the hat brim, dress hem, arms, and legs while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Head: round, smooth, wide-cheeked, and firmly stuffed.
  • Eyes: raised green bumps with white, blue, black, and white highlight layers.
  • Face: red lips, curved smile, two nostrils, pink cheeks, and black lashes.
  • Dress: striped, flared, with two flower bands, blue straps, and yellow buttons.
  • Accessories: sunflower hat, basket bag, strawberries, apples, carrot, sandals, and hair flower.
  • Balance: arms hang beside the dress and legs show below the hem.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the frog away from direct sunlight so the green body, red strawberries, and pastel dress stripes stay bright. Keep the doll in a dry place, and avoid pressing heavy objects on the eye bumps, hat brim, or flower decorations.

To refresh the shape, lightly steam from a safe distance without touching the yarn with the iron. Fluff the stuffing by gently rolling the head and body between your hands. Let the doll cool and dry fully before displaying it again.

  • Use a soft brush to remove dust from the dress and hat.
  • Use a damp cotton swab for small stains on the lips, cheeks, or fruit.
  • Do not twist the limbs while cleaning.
  • Keep the basket handle and strawberry stems supported when storing.

Your summer frog in a striped flower dress is now complete, with her garden basket, sunny hat, strawberries, sandals, apples, and carrot ready for a cheerful handmade display.
