Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This knitting pattern is written to create a soft amigurumi-style puppy that closely matches the image. The finished puppy has a large rounded head, a smaller rounded body, short arms, narrow legs, floppy side ears, and a detailed outfit with tiny garden-themed decorations.

The puppy is worked mostly in the round on double-pointed needles or with the magic loop method. The clothing and small accessories are worked separately, then sewn on carefully. The overalls are intentionally shaped wider through the hips and rounded at the bottom, just like the cream romper in the image.

For best results, knit with a firm tension. The fabric should be tight enough that stuffing does not show through. If your stitches are loose, go down one needle size. If your fabric feels stiff and difficult to shape, go up one needle size.

Finished Size

  • Puppy height: about 8.5 inches from bottom of sandals to top of head flower.
  • Head width: about 3.5 inches after stuffing.
  • Body width: about 2.5 inches across the overalls.
  • Sun hat: about 3 inches wide.
  • Watering can: about 2.5 inches long including spout and handle.
  • Potted plant: about 2.75 inches tall.

Skill Level

This pattern is suitable for confident beginners who already know how to knit, purl, increase, decrease, sew seams, and work small pieces in the round. Some accessories are tiny, so patience is important. The instructions are detailed and include stitch counts to help you shape each part clearly.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in chocolate brown for the puppy.
  • Small amount of dark brown or black yarn for nose, mouth, and eyebrow embroidery.
  • Cream yarn for overalls, hat, and sandal straps.
  • Golden yellow yarn for sunflower petals, ruffle collar, bag, bag strap, and bee details.
  • Medium brown yarn for sunflower center and pot soil.
  • Light tan yarn for sandal soles and hat trim.
  • Soft green yarn for leaves, plant, and flower stems on overalls.
  • Orange yarn for small sunflower embroidery on overalls.
  • White yarn for bee wings and small daisies on the hat.
  • Light gray yarn for watering cans.
  • Two 9 mm black safety eyes or glossy black sew-on eyes.
  • Thin craft wire for round glasses, or ready-made doll glasses about 2 inches wide.
  • Two tiny tan buttons for overall straps.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • US size 3 knitting needles, 3.25 mm, double-pointed needles or circular needle for magic loop.
  • US size 2 knitting needles, 2.75 mm, for small accessories if you want firmer details.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Small amount of pink or cream embroidery thread for paw highlights.
  • Scissors and pins for assembly.

Gauge

Gauge: 7 stitches and 10 rounds = 1 inch in stockinette stitch, worked in the round with the main yarn and US size 3 needles. Exact gauge is less important than firm fabric, but matching gauge helps the clothing fit the puppy correctly.

Abbreviations

  • CO: cast on.
  • BO: bind off.
  • K: knit.
  • P: purl.
  • St or sts: stitch or stitches.
  • Rnd: round.
  • RS: right side.
  • WS: wrong side.
  • Kfb: knit into the front and back of the same stitch, increasing 1 stitch.
  • K2tog: knit 2 stitches together, decreasing 1 stitch.
  • SSK: slip 1 stitch knitwise, slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit them together through the back loops.
  • M1: make 1 stitch by lifting the bar between stitches and knitting into the back loop.
  • I-cord: a narrow knitted cord worked on double-pointed needles.

Important Construction Notes

  • Stuff each body part firmly but not so hard that the stitches stretch open.
  • Leave long yarn tails on pieces that will be sewn to the body.
  • The puppy’s head is intentionally larger than the body to create the cute toy-like proportion shown in the image.
  • The floppy ears should sit low on each side of the head, beginning near the eye line and hanging down toward the collar.
  • The overalls are not removable. They are knitted as a separate garment and sewn neatly around the body.
  • The glasses can be made from thin craft wire. Keep the ends tucked and secured safely if the toy is for display.

Main Puppy Head

Use chocolate brown yarn. Work in the round. The head is round and slightly wide, with the lower front shaped gently for the muzzle. Place a stitch marker at the beginning of each round.

  1. Rnd 1: CO 8 sts. Join in the round, being careful not to twist.
  2. Rnd 2: Kfb in each st around. 16 sts.
  3. Rnd 3: K1, kfb; repeat around. 24 sts.
  4. Rnd 4: K2, kfb; repeat around. 32 sts.

  16. Rnd 29: K2, k2tog; repeat 8 times, K2. 26 sts.

Pause to insert the safety eyes between Rnds 17 and 18, about 10 stitches apart. The eyes should sit slightly low on the face, leaving room for the sunflower on top and the glasses around the eyes.

Begin stuffing the head firmly. Shape it with your hands so the front is rounded and the back is smooth. Continue decreasing after the face placement looks balanced.

  1. Rnd 30: K1, k2tog; repeat 8 times, K2. 18 sts.
  2. Rnd 31: K2tog around. 9 sts.
  3. Rnd 32: K2tog 4 times, K1. 5 sts.

Cut yarn, thread through remaining stitches, pull closed, and secure. The closing point will be at the lower back of the head and will later be hidden near the neck.

Muzzle Patch and Nose

The muzzle is embroidered and lightly shaped rather than made as a large protruding piece. This keeps the puppy face soft and close to the image, where the nose sits neatly in the center with a simple vertical mouth line.

Small Muzzle Pad

Use chocolate brown yarn one shade slightly lighter than the head if available. Work flat.

  1. Row 1: CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 2: P all sts.
  3. Row 3: K1, kfb, K4, kfb, K1. 10 sts.
  4. Row 4: P all sts.
  5. Row 5: K all sts.
  6. Row 6: P all sts.
  7. Row 7: K1, ssk, K4, k2tog, K1. 8 sts.
  8. Row 8: P all sts.
  9. Row 9: SSK, K4, k2tog. 6 sts.
  10. Row 10: BO purlwise.

Sew this small oval patch centered below the eyes. Stuff it with only a tiny pinch of fiberfill so it looks softly raised, not bulky.

Nose and Mouth Embroidery

  • Use black or very dark brown yarn.
  • Embroider a small rounded triangle nose over the upper center of the muzzle, about 5 stitches wide and 4 rows tall.
  • Fill the triangle with horizontal satin stitches.
  • From the bottom point of the nose, stitch one straight vertical line down about 7 rows.
  • Add two short angled stitches at the bottom to create the soft puppy mouth.
  • Embroider two short slanted eyebrows above the eyes using 2 straight stitches each.

Floppy Ears

Make 2 ears with chocolate brown yarn. Each ear is knitted flat in stockinette stitch, then lightly curled by the natural edge. The top is narrower and the bottom is rounded, creating the soft drooping ear shape shown in the photo.

  1. Row 1: CO 10 sts.
  2. Row 2: P all sts.
  3. Row 3: K1, kfb, K6, kfb, K1. 12 sts.
  4. Row 4: P all sts.
  5. Row 5: K1, kfb, K8, kfb, K1. 14 sts.
  6. Rows 6-18: Work in stockinette stitch, knitting RS rows and purling WS rows. 14 sts.
  7. Row 19: K1, ssk, K8, k2tog, K1. 12 sts.
  8. Row 20: P all sts.

  12. Row 24: P all sts.
  13. Row 25: SSK, K4, k2tog. 6 sts.
  14. Row 26: BO purlwise.

Do not stuff the ears. Sew each ear to the side of the head beginning around Rnd 14 and ending around Rnd 21. The ears should angle slightly forward and hang beside the cheeks.

Body

The body is smaller than the head and hidden mostly under the overalls. Use chocolate brown yarn and work in the round.

  1. Rnd 1: CO 8 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 2: Kfb around. 16 sts.
  3. Rnd 3: K1, kfb; repeat around. 24 sts.

Stuff the body firmly. Leave the top slightly flatter so the head can sit securely. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing the body to the head later.

Arms

Make 2 arms with chocolate brown yarn. The arms are narrow, rounded at the paw, and hang down at the sides of the overalls.

  1. Rnd 1: CO 6 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 2: Kfb around. 12 sts.
  3. Rnd 3: K1, kfb; repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. Rnds 4-6: K all sts around. 18 sts.
  5. Rnd 7: K1, k2tog; repeat around. 12 sts.
  6. Rnds 8-17: K all sts around. 12 sts.
  7. Rnd 18: K2tog around. 6 sts.

Stuff only the lower paw and the first half of the arm. Leave the upper part flatter for easier sewing. Thread yarn through remaining stitches and close.

Paw Highlights

  • Use cream or pale pink yarn.
  • On each paw, embroider 3 tiny straight stitches at the rounded end.
  • Keep the stitches short and evenly spaced, matching the small pale claw marks visible in the image.

Legs

Make 2 legs with chocolate brown yarn. These are slim and visible between the shorts and sandals.

  1. Rnd 1: CO 8 sts. Join in the round.

Stuff the legs lightly so they remain flexible. Close the top and sew the legs under the body with about 5 stitches of space between them.

Cream Sunflower Overalls

The overalls are the main clothing piece. They are cream with a rounded bib, short bloomer-style legs, yellow-orange sunflower embroidery, two tan buttons, and yellow straps crossing naturally over the shoulders.

Overall Pants

Use cream yarn. Work the pants from the waist down. The piece is worked in the round, then divided into two leg openings.

  1. Rnd 1: CO 44 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 2: P all sts to make a soft waist ridge.
  3. Rnds 3-8: K all sts around. 44 sts.

Second Overall Leg

  1. Return the remaining 24 sts to the needles.
  2. Join cream yarn at the inner leg.
  3. Repeat Rnds 18-25 as written for the first leg.

Use the yarn tails to close any small gap at the crotch. The bottom cuffs should look rounded and soft, sitting above the puppy’s brown legs.

Sew one end of each strap to the back waist. Bring the straps over the shoulders and sew them to the upper front bib. Add one small tan button to each front strap join.

Sunflower Embroidery on Overalls

The overalls in the image have small yellow-orange flowers scattered across the cream fabric. Use duplicate stitch or simple embroidery after the overalls are on the puppy.

  • Make 7 small flowers on the front: 3 across the upper body, 2 near the center, and 2 near the lower leg area.
  • For each flower center, use orange yarn and make 2 tiny horizontal stitches over 1 knitted stitch.
  • For petals, use golden yellow yarn and make 5 short straight stitches around the center.
  • For stems, use green yarn and stitch a vertical line about 3 rows tall.
  • For leaves, add 1 small diagonal green stitch on each side of the stem.
  • Keep each flower about 4 stitches wide and 5 rows tall.

Golden Ruffle Collar

The ruffled collar sits around the neck, just above the overalls. It is golden yellow and shaped like a soft frill.

Use golden yellow yarn and work flat.

  6. Row 6: BO loosely knitwise.

Wrap the ruffle around the puppy’s neck and sew the short ends together at the back. Tack the collar lightly to the body so it does not twist.

Sunflower Head Accessory

The flower on the puppy’s head has a brown textured center, bright yellow petals, and a small green leaf tucked behind it. It is placed slightly to one side on top of the head.

Sunflower Center

Use medium brown yarn and work in the round.

  9. Row 9: SSK, K1, k2tog. 3 sts.
  10. Row 10: Slip 1, k2tog, pass slipped stitch over. 1 st.

Sew the leaf behind the sunflower. Attach the sunflower to the top of the head, slightly toward the puppy’s left side.

Round Glasses

The glasses are a key facial detail. Use thin craft wire in bronze, brown, or gold. Shape gently so the glasses sit around the safety eyes without pressing into them.

  1. Cut one piece of wire about 7 inches long.
  2. Wrap one end around a round pen or marker to form the first lens circle, about 0.75 inch wide.
  3. Twist the wire once at the bridge.
  4. Form the second matching circle.
  5. Bend the remaining wire back slightly on each side to create tiny arms.
  6. Position the glasses over the eyes.
  7. Secure the bridge and side points with tiny stitches using matching sewing thread.

📌Thank you for reading the article

For a child-safe soft toy, embroider the glasses instead of using wire. Stitch two circles around the eyes and a curved bridge between them using dark brown yarn.

Bag Strap

Use golden yellow yarn. Make a thin I-cord.

  1. CO 3 sts onto double-pointed needles.
  2. K 3 sts, slide stitches to the other end of the needle, and pull yarn across the back.
  3. Repeat until the I-cord measures about 7.5 inches.
  4. BO all sts and weave in ends.

Sew one end of the strap to the top left corner of the bag and the other end to the top right corner. Place the strap diagonally across the puppy’s chest from shoulder to hip, then tack it lightly to the overalls.

Bee Motif on Bag

  • With black yarn, embroider a tiny oval bee body on the bag flap, about 5 stitches wide.
  • Add 3 short black stripes across the yellow body.
  • Use white yarn to make two small wing stitches above the bee.
  • Add one tiny black stitch for the bee head.

Plant Leaves

Make 6 leaves with pale green yarn. Use the same green leaf pattern from the sunflower, but make 3 full-size leaves and 3 shorter leaves ending after Row 7.

Sew the leaves in a star shape into the center of the soil circle. Fold each leaf slightly lengthwise and secure the base with two stitches so the plant stands upright.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew the body to the bottom of the head. The head should tilt forward very slightly for a gentle puppy expression.
  2. Sew the legs under the body, spaced evenly and angled forward.
  3. Pull the cream overalls up over the body and legs. Sew them discreetly at the back waist and around the leg openings.
  4. Sew the arms to the sides of the body at shoulder height, letting them hang over the edges of the overalls.
  5. Add the ruffle collar around the neck before attaching final accessories.
  6. Sew the ears to the sides of the head, making sure they frame the face.
  7. Attach the sunflower head accessory slightly off-center.
  8. Add the glasses around the eyes and secure them safely.
  9. Sew the crossbody bag strap across the chest and attach the bag near the lower front hip.
  10. Add sandals to the feet and adjust the legs so the puppy stands or sits neatly.
  11. Place the sun hat, watering can, and potted plant around the puppy for the full garden display.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face from the front before tying off any embroidery. The eyes should look bright and even inside the glasses. The nose should sit centered between the eyes and slightly above the mouth line. The ears should hang at the same height on both sides.

Add small highlights to the eyes with white embroidery thread if desired. One tiny stitch near the upper outer edge of each eye gives the same glossy look shown in the image.

Shape the head with your hands after stuffing. Gently press the lower face forward and smooth the top where the sunflower will sit. If the head turns after sewing, add a few hidden stitches between the back of the head and the collar.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if using wire glasses, buttons, or safety eyes.
  • Let the toy air dry fully before storing.
  • Keep the sunflower petals flat by smoothing them gently with your fingers after cleaning.
  • If making this for a young child, replace wire glasses and buttons with embroidery.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is larger than the body and securely attached.
  • The ears are floppy, unstuffed, and sewn low beside the cheeks.
  • The overalls have a cream base, front bib, straps, buttons, and flower embroidery.
  • The ruffle collar sits visibly between the head and overalls.
  • The yellow bag crosses the body diagonally and includes a bee motif.
  • The sandals include cream straps, tan soles, and tiny bees.
  • The sunflower head accessory includes yellow petals, brown center, and green leaf.
  • The garden props include a sun hat, watering can, and potted plant.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the puppy in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Sunlight can fade brown, yellow, and green yarn over time. If displaying the full garden scene, keep the props arranged loosely so the hat brim, plant leaves, and watering can spout are not crushed.

To refresh the shape, gently fluff the stuffed parts with your hands. Do not pull the glasses or the embroidered flowers. If the overalls shift, tack them down again with small hidden stitches using matching cream yarn.

For long-term storage, wrap the puppy in acid-free tissue or a soft cotton cloth. Avoid plastic bags for long storage because trapped moisture can affect the yarn. Keep small accessories in the same box so the full sunflower garden set stays together.
