Knitting Tutorial: Gardener Basset Hound in Denim Overalls – Free Knitting Pattern

This sweet knitted gardener basset hound has a cream body, warm brown head patches, long floppy ears, soft denim-blue clothing, tiny floral pockets, a crossbody garden bag, red sandals, a small flower hair clip, and matching garden accessories. The finished toy is designed with a rounded puppy shape, seated legs, droopy basset eyes, and handmade details that match the cozy garden look in the photo.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

Using DK weight yarn and the needle sizes listed below, the finished basset hound measures about 10.5 inches tall from the bottom of the sandals to the top of the head, not including the raised flower clip. The seated body is about 5 inches wide across the hips, and each long ear measures about 5 inches from the top attachment point to the rounded tip.

Skill Level

This pattern is written for confident beginners and intermediate knitters. Most pieces are knitted in stockinette stitch with simple increases, decreases, seaming, stuffing, embroidery, and small decorative details. The body and head are shaped firmly so the toy sits upright, while the ears and clothing stay soft and slightly floppy.

Materials

  • Yarn weight: DK or light worsted yarn.
  • Cream yarn: for face stripe, muzzle, belly, paws, arms, lower legs, and toes.
  • Warm chestnut brown yarn: for head patches, ears, upper legs, and body side markings.
  • Denim blue yarn: for jacket, straps, bag, cuffs, and garden hat.
  • Pale yellow yarn: for pocket patches, flower centers, hat trim, and sandal soles.
  • Coral red yarn: for sandals, ankle straps, bow ties, and flower embroidery.
  • Leaf green yarn: for embroidered stems and leaves.
  • Black yarn: for nose, mouth line, and eye outlining.
  • White yarn: for eye highlights and small hat decoration.
  • Small amount of lavender or pink yarn: for the tiny flower clip.
  • Needles: US 2.5 or 3 mm double-pointed needles for toy pieces.
  • Needles: US 3 or 3.25 mm straight or circular needles for clothing pieces if you knit tightly.
  • Safety eyes: two 9 mm glossy brown or black safety eyes, or embroider eyes if making for a small child.
  • Buttons: four tiny tan buttons for the front of the denim jacket and one button for the bag flap.
  • Stuffing: polyester fiberfill.
  • Tapestry needle: for seaming, embroidery, and assembly.
  • Stitch markers: for round starts and shaping points.
  • Optional: pipe cleaner or soft floral wire for the bag strap only, not for a toy intended for young children.

Gauge

Toy gauge: 26 stitches and 36 rounds equal 4 inches in stockinette stitch, knitted firmly. A tight gauge is important because the stuffing should not show through the fabric.

Clothing gauge: 24 stitches and 34 rows equal 4 inches in stockinette stitch. The denim jacket should be slightly softer than the body so it can wrap around the puppy without pulling the arms inward.

Pattern Notes

All toy pieces are knitted with firm tension. The body, head, muzzle, arms, legs, and ears are made separately and sewn together. The basset hound has a large rounded head, droopy cheeks, a full cream muzzle, a vertical cream blaze, brown face panels, and long brown ears that hang beside the cheeks.

The dog is designed to sit with the legs hanging forward. The lower legs are cream and the upper leg areas are brown, matching the photo. The jacket is a denim-style garment with a cream center shirt panel, blue sleeves, floral patch pockets, tan buttons, and a crossbody bag. The red sandals are knitted separately and sewn around the feet.

Main Body

Work the body in the round from the bottom upward. Use cream yarn for the belly center and chestnut brown yarn for the side hip patches. For easiest shaping, knit the body in cream first, then duplicate stitch the brown side patches later. If you prefer intarsia in the round, you may add brown during the knitting, but duplicate stitch gives a cleaner beginner-friendly result.

Body Markings

With chestnut brown yarn, duplicate stitch two side patches on the lower body. Each side patch begins about 6 rounds above the bottom and covers about 10 stitches wide by 14 rounds tall. Keep the cream belly visible in the center front. This creates the soft basset coloring seen below the jacket.

Head

The head is large and rounded with a wide forehead, droopy cheeks, and a soft muzzle area. Knit the base in cream, then add brown face panels on each side of the cream blaze. The cream stripe should run from the crown down between the eyes and into the muzzle.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 10 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts. 10 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in every st around. 20 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: k all sts.

  18. Rnd 28: k all sts.
  19. Rnd 29: rep k4, k2tog around. 40 sts.
  20. Pause and place the safety eyes between Rnds 18 and 19, 10 sts apart, leaving the center cream blaze between them.
  21. Begin stuffing the head firmly. Add extra stuffing to the cheeks but keep the front face gently flattened.
  22. Rnd 30: rep k3, k2tog around. 32 sts.
  23. Rnd 31: rep k2, k2tog around. 24 sts.
  24. Rnd 32: rep k1, k2tog around. 16 sts.
  25. Rnd 33: k2tog around. 8 sts.
  26. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull tight, and weave in.

Brown Face Panels

The brown patches frame the eyes and sit on both sides of the cream blaze. Use duplicate stitch or surface embroidery after the head is stuffed. On each side, cover an oval area about 12 stitches wide and 16 rounds tall. Start the brown area near the top of the head at Rnd 9, curve it around the eye, and narrow it near the muzzle.

  • Right panel: begin 5 sts to the right of the center front line and cover outward toward the ear side.
  • Left panel: mirror the right panel, beginning 5 sts to the left of the center front line.
  • Keep a cream vertical stripe about 8 sts wide across the forehead, narrowing slightly toward the nose.
  • Add a few darker brown stitches above each eye to create a droopy eyebrow fold.

Muzzle

The muzzle is knitted separately in cream and sewn to the lower front of the face. It should be oval, soft, and slightly protruding. The black nose sits on the top center of this muzzle, with a short stitched mouth line beneath it.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 8 sts and work flat.
  2. Row 1: p all sts.
  3. Row 2: kfb, k6, kfb. 10 sts.
  4. Row 3: p all sts.
  5. Row 4: kfb, k8, kfb. 12 sts.
  6. Row 5: p all sts.
  7. Row 6: kfb, k10, kfb. 14 sts.
  8. Rows 7-13: work in stockinette stitch, beginning with a purl row.
  9. Row 14: ssk, k10, k2tog. 12 sts.
  10. Row 15: p all sts.
  11. Row 16: ssk, k8, k2tog. 10 sts.
  12. Row 17: p all sts.
  13. Row 18: ssk, k6, k2tog. 8 sts.
  14. BO all sts, leaving a long sewing tail.

Sew the muzzle to the head from just below the eyes to the lower face. Add a small amount of stuffing before closing the final edge. Shape the muzzle into a rounded oval by tightening the seam slightly at the lower center.

Nose

The nose is oval, black, and centered at the top of the muzzle. It should sit slightly raised, like the plush nose in the photo.

  1. With black yarn, CO 6 sts and work flat.
  2. Row 1: p all sts.
  3. Row 2: kfb, k4, kfb. 8 sts.
  4. Row 3: p all sts.
  5. Row 4: k all sts.
  6. Row 5: p all sts.
  7. Row 6: ssk, k4, k2tog. 6 sts.
  8. BO all sts.

Sew the nose onto the upper center of the muzzle. Use black yarn to satin stitch over the knitted nose until it looks smooth and rounded. Embroider one vertical line down from the nose for 4 rows, then add a small curved mouth on each side.

Eyes and Droopy Details

To match the soft basset expression, add eye shaping after the safety eyes are attached. With brown yarn, stitch a curved upper eyelid above each eye. With cream or white yarn, add a tiny stitch below each eye for a glossy highlight. Use black yarn sparingly around the outer eye corner to deepen the expression.

  • Upper eyelid: make 3 short backstitches over the top of each eye.
  • Lower eyelid: make 2 cream stitches under each eye, following the round shape.
  • Eye wrinkle: use dark brown yarn and sew a short diagonal stitch above the inner eye corner.
  • Do not pull too tightly; the face should look gentle, not pinched.

Long Floppy Ears

The ears are one of the most important parts of this basset hound. They are long, rounded, heavy-looking, and hang down beside the face. Knit two identical ears in chestnut brown. Work them flat so the fabric stays soft and flexible.

  1. With chestnut brown yarn, CO 10 sts.
  2. Row 1: p all sts.
  3. Row 2: kfb, k8, kfb. 12 sts.
  4. Row 3: p all sts.
  5. Row 4: kfb, k10, kfb. 14 sts.
  6. Row 5: p all sts.
  7. Row 6: kfb, k12, kfb. 16 sts.
  8. Row 7: p all sts.

  15. Row 43: p all sts.
  16. Row 44: ssk, k10, k2tog. 12 sts.
  17. Row 45: p all sts.
  18. Row 46: ssk, k8, k2tog. 10 sts.
  19. Row 47: p all sts.
  20. Row 48: ssk, k6, k2tog. 8 sts.
  21. BO all sts, leaving a long tail.

Fold each ear lengthwise with the wrong sides touching and sew only the side edges lightly, leaving the top edge open. Do not stuff the ears. Steam-block gently with your hand so each ear curves inward. Sew the top of each ear to the side of the head beginning around Rnd 12 and ending around Rnd 20. The ears should hang forward and frame the cheeks.

Arms

The arms are cream at the paws and partially covered by blue jacket sleeves. Knit the base arms in cream, then knit separate denim sleeves over the upper arm for a layered look.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 8 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in every st around. 16 sts.

  6. Row 16: k2tog, k12, k2tog. 14 sts.
  7. Row 17: p all sts.
  8. BO all sts, leaving a sewing tail.

Wrap one sleeve around each upper arm and seam at the underside. The garter cuff sits near the paw. Sew the top of the arms to the shoulders after the jacket body is placed so the sleeves and jacket align neatly.

Legs

The legs are made in two colors. The foot and lower leg are cream, while the upper leg has a chestnut brown patch. The shape is rounded and soft, with the feet pointing forward to fit inside the red sandals.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 10 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in every st around. 20 sts.

Denim Jacket and Overall Front

The blue garment in the photo looks like a soft denim gardener jacket layered over a cream belly panel. Sew the flower to the head above the left ear. Add a few green stitches behind it for leaves. Keep the flower flat enough that it looks like a clip rather than a large hat.

Small Acorn Props

The photo includes tiny garden objects near the puppy. These knitted acorns are optional but help complete the scene. Make one tan acorn and one brown acorn.

  2. Attach or embroider the eyes, then add eyelids, highlights, and brow wrinkles.
  3. Sew the long brown ears to the sides of the head so they hang low and slightly forward.
  4. Attach the head to the body using the open neck stitches. Add stuffing at the neck before closing.
  5. Sew the legs to the lower body in a seated position.
  6. Sew the sandal soles, front straps, ankle straps, and bows to the feet.
  7. Place the cream center shirt panel on the body and sew it down neatly.
  8. Put the denim jacket on the body and sew the side seams if needed.
  9. Attach the arms so the blue sleeves sit naturally at the sides.
  10. Add the floral pockets, jacket embroidery, and tan buttons.
  11. Sew the crossbody bag strap diagonally across the jacket and secure the bag at the hip.
  12. Add the flower clip to the head and place the hat and acorns beside the finished puppy.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the head angle before making the final neck stitches. The basset hound should look forward with a soft, slightly pleading expression. If the head tilts too far back, add a few stitches at the front neck to pull the chin down gently.

Use small embroidery stitches around the muzzle to shape the cheeks. A short black mouth line and two tiny curved smile stitches are enough. Add brown shading stitches near the eyes and keep the cream center stripe clear so the basset face stays recognizable.

After the face is finished, brush the ears lightly with your fingers to relax the knitted fabric. Do not overbrush because the stitches should still look neat and handmade.

Care Notes

Spot clean the toy with cool water and mild soap. Press gently with a towel and let it air dry flat. Do not machine wash if you used buttons, safety eyes, or delicate embroidery. Keep the bag strap and flower clip flat while drying.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The cream blaze runs clearly from the forehead to the muzzle.
  • Both brown face panels frame the eyes evenly.
  • The ears are long, soft, and attached at matching heights.
  • The jacket opens enough to show the cream center panel.
  • The floral pockets are secure and placed evenly on the lower front panels.
  • The crossbody bag rests near the hip and does not pull the jacket sideways.
  • The red sandals are snug around both feet with bows facing outward.
  • The garden hat, bee detail, flower clip, and acorns are complete.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished knitted basset hound away from direct sunlight to protect the denim blue, coral red, and warm brown colors. If dust gathers on the toy, use a soft dry cloth or a clean makeup brush to lift it gently from the stitches.

For long-term storage, wrap the toy loosely in acid-free tissue paper. Do not compress the ears, muzzle, bag, or sandals. Keep the hat and acorns in the same box so the full gardener display stays together.

If the toy is handled often, check the buttons, bag strap, flower clip, and sandal bows from time to time. Reinforce any loose decorative stitches with matching yarn and a tapestry needle.
