Knitting Tutorial: Mushroom Turtle – Free Knitting Pattern

This sweet Mushroom Turtle is a soft knitted forest friend with a large rounded green head, tall cream eyes, a striped blue-and-cream sweater, blue shorts, brown sandals, a rounded turtle shell, and a cream crossbody mushroom bag. The set also includes a blue mushroom-patch hat and a small knitting basket with tiny yarn balls and needles.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms. The turtle is worked mostly in the round on double-pointed needles or with the magic loop method. Small pieces are knitted separately, stuffed lightly, and sewn together to create the rounded toy shape shown in the photo.

The main body has a soft amigurumi-style structure. The head is intentionally oversized, with a wide rounded snout and raised oval eyes. The outfit is built directly over the body shape, with knitted stripes, ribbed cuffs, shorts, sandals, and woodland mushroom details.

  • Finished size: about 11 inches tall from sandals to top of head, not including the removable hat.
  • Skill level: adventurous beginner to intermediate.
  • Construction: knitted in the round, stuffed, shaped, and seamed.
  • Gauge: 24 sts and 32 rnds = 4 inches in stockinette using the main needle size.
  • Texture: firm toy fabric with visible knit stitches, matching the dense handmade look in the image.

Important Notes Before You Start

Use a needle size that creates a tight fabric. Stuffing should not show through the stitches. If your stitches look loose, move down one needle size. The turtle in the image has a firm, rounded shape with soft edges, so steady stuffing and careful shaping are important.

Leave long yarn tails on almost every small piece. These tails will be used for sewing and shaping. When sewing, use small ladder stitches and pull gently. Do not pull so tightly that the knitted fabric puckers sharply.

The toy is designed with separate clothing pieces so the outfit looks layered. The sweater is made as part of the upper body, while the shorts, cuffs, sandals, bag, shell, hat, mushrooms, and basket are added afterward.

Main Body and Striped Sweater

The body is shaped like a small pear under the sweater: round at the belly, narrower at the neck, and slightly flattened where the shell is attached. Work from the lower body upward. Change colors as noted to create the blue-and-cream striped sweater.

Stuff the body firmly, making the lower belly round and the upper chest slightly narrower. The front should be smooth because the mushroom embroidery and bag will sit there. The back can be flatter because the shell will cover it.

Neck Opening

  1. Rnd 33: denim blue, k all sts. 24 sts.
  2. Rnd 34: *k2, k2tog; repeat from * around. 18 sts.
  3. Rnd 35: k all sts.
  4. BO loosely, leaving a long tail for attaching the head.

Blue Shorts

The shorts sit below the striped sweater and cover the lower body. They should look like soft knitted blue shorts with ribbed hems around both legs, as seen in the image.

Shorts Waistband

  1. With denim blue and US 2 needles, CO 48 sts.
  2. Work flat in k1, p1 rib for 4 rows.
  3. Change to US 3 needles.
  4. Rows 5-10: work stockinette, knitting RS rows and purling WS rows.
  5. BO loosely, leaving a long tail.

Wrap the shorts band around the lower body just under the sweater stripes. Sew the back seam neatly. The top edge should sit under the cream stripe at the waist so the outfit looks continuous.

Shorts Leg Cuffs

  1. Make 2. With denim blue and US 2 needles, CO 24 sts.
  2. Rows 1-4: k1, p1 rib across.
  3. Rows 5-8: stockinette.
  4. BO loosely.

Sew each cuff into a ring. Slide one around the top of each leg after the legs are attached. Stitch the cuffs to the shorts body so they sit like short pant legs with ribbed hems.

Legs

The legs are green and straight, with visible vertical knit stitches. They are long enough to show between the blue shorts and the brown sandals. The shape is slightly tapered at the ankle.

  1. Make 2. With moss green yarn and US 3 needles, CO 12 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: *k1, kfb; repeat from * around. 18 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: k all sts.
  5. Rnd 4: *k2, kfb; repeat from * around. 24 sts.
  6. Rnds 5-18: k all sts.
  7. Rnd 19: *k4, k2tog; repeat from * around. 20 sts.
  8. Rnds 20-24: k all sts.
  9. Stuff firmly but keep the leg slightly flexible.
  10. Rnd 25: *k2, k2tog; repeat from * around. 15 sts.
  11. Rnd 26: k all sts.
  12. BO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Sew the legs to the lower body at a slight outward angle. The turtle should stand or sit with the feet pointing forward. Place the legs about 1 inch apart at the bottom of the body.

Large Rounded Feet

The feet are green and rounded, visible through the open sandal fronts. They should be wider than the legs, giving the toy a stable, cute stance.

  1. Make 2. With moss green yarn, CO 8 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: kfb in every st around. 16 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: *k1, kfb; repeat from * around. 24 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: *k2, kfb; repeat from * around. 32 sts.
  5. Rnds 4-9: k all sts.
  6. Rnd 10: *k6, k2tog; repeat from * around. 28 sts.
  7. Rnd 11: k all sts.
  8. Rnd 12: *k5, k2tog; repeat from * around. 24 sts.
  9. Stuff the toe area firmly.
  10. Rnd 13: *k2, k2tog; repeat from * around. 18 sts.
  11. Rnd 14: *k1, k2tog; repeat from * around. 12 sts.
  12. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and weave in.

Sew each foot to the bottom of a leg. Flatten the underside slightly with your fingers while sewing so the feet rest naturally. The rounded front should extend beyond the sandal strap.

Brown Sandals

The sandals are made in warm brown with thick soles and cross straps. Add a small tan leaf embroidery on one sandal to match the woodland detail in the image.

Sandal Soles

  1. Make 2. With brown yarn and US 3 needles, CO 10 sts.
  2. Row 1: k across.
  3. Row 2: p across.
  4. Row 3: kfb, k8, kfb. 12 sts.

  7. Rows 6-14: stockinette.
  8. Row 15: ssk, k10, k2tog. 12 sts.
  9. Row 16: p across.
  10. Row 17: ssk, k8, k2tog. 10 sts.
  11. BO.

Sandal Straps

  1. For each sandal, make 2 straps. With brown yarn, CO 5 sts.
  2. Work i-cord for 3 inches, or knit every row for 20 rows to make a flat strap.
  3. BO and leave tails.
  4. Place one strap across the toe and one strap diagonally across the upper foot.
  5. Sew each strap to the edges of the sole and lightly tack it to the green foot.

For the leaf detail, use tan yarn and embroider two small lazy-daisy stitches on the outer side of one sandal. Add one straight stitch down the center of each leaf.

Arms and Sweater Sleeves

The arms have short striped sleeves with green hands. They hang gently at the sides. The sleeves should match the blue-and-cream sweater body.

  1. Make 2. With moss green yarn, CO 10 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in every st around. 20 sts.
  4. Rnds 3-7: k all sts in green.
  5. Change to denim blue.

  18. Rnd 17: *k2, k2tog; repeat from * around. 12 sts.
  19. Stuff the green hand lightly and the sleeve softly.
  20. BO, leaving a long tail.

Sew the arms to the sides of the body just below the neck opening. Angle them downward, with the green hands showing clearly below the short sleeves.

Large Turtle Head

The head is the most important shape in this design. It has a very large rounded snout, a narrower back of head, and raised eye area. Work the head from the nose front toward the back.

  1. With moss green yarn and US 3 needles, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in every st around. 16 sts.

  20. Rnd 30: *k4, k2tog; repeat from * around. 40 sts.
  21. Rnd 31: k all sts.
  22. Rnd 32: *k3, k2tog; repeat from * around. 32 sts.
  23. Stuff the snout firmly, rounding the front into a wide oval.
  24. Rnd 33: *k2, k2tog; repeat from * around. 24 sts.
  25. Rnd 34: k all sts.
  26. BO, leaving a long tail for sewing to the neck.

Before closing completely, shape the head with your hands. The front should be broad and softly protruding. The top should remain high enough for the eyes to sit above the snout. Add more stuffing if the nose collapses.

Raised Eye Whites

The cream eye whites are tall oval pads, placed close together on top of the head. They lean slightly forward and give the turtle its curious expression.

  1. Make 2. With cream yarn and US 3 needles, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: k across.
  3. Row 2: p across.
  4. Row 3: kfb, k6, kfb. 10 sts.
  5. Row 4: p across.

  10. Row 16: p across.
  11. Row 17: ssk, k6, k2tog. 8 sts.
  12. Row 18: p across.
  13. BO, leaving a long tail.

Lightly stuff each eye pad while sewing it to the head. Place the lower edge of each eye just above the snout curve. The two cream ovals should touch or nearly touch in the middle.

Attach black safety eyes or embroidered black eyes to the lower front area of each cream oval. In the photo, the black eyes are glossy and sit slightly inward, creating a gentle, shy expression.

Green Eye Rims and Head Ridge

The image shows soft green ridges around the cream eye pads. These ridges frame the eyes and make them look raised from the head.

  1. Make 2 eye rims. With moss green yarn and US 2 needles, CO 4 sts.
  2. Knit every row until the strip measures 5 inches.
  3. BO and leave a long tail.
  4. Wrap one strip around each cream eye pad.
  5. Sew the strip edge down using small stitches, shaping it into an oval rim.

For the head ridge between the eyes and down the back, CO 5 sts with green yarn. Knit every row for 4 inches. BO. Sew this strip from the top center between the eyes toward the back of the head.

Head Attachment

Place the head on the neck so the large snout points slightly downward and forward. The bottom of the head should overlap the sweater neck. Pin first, then sew around the neck twice for strength.

  1. Use the body tail and a tapestry needle.
  2. Sew around the neck opening through the lower back of the head.
  3. Add extra stitches under the chin for support.
  4. Check the side view before securing the final knot.
  5. The head should sit proudly forward, not straight upward.

Turtle Shell

The shell is rounded, brown, and attached to the back like a small backpack. It is visible behind the shoulder and body, with a cream border suggesting a shell rim.

Brown Shell Dome

  1. With warm brown yarn and US 3 needles, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in every st around. 16 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: *k1, kfb; repeat from * around. 24 sts.
  5. Rnd 4: k all sts.
  6. Rnd 5: *k2, kfb; repeat from * around. 32 sts.
  7. Rnd 6: k all sts.
  8. Rnd 7: *k3, kfb; repeat from * around. 40 sts.
  9. Rnd 8: k all sts.
  10. Rnd 9: *k4, kfb; repeat from * around. 48 sts.
  11. Rnds 10-18: k all sts.
  12. Rnd 19: *k6, k2tog; repeat from * around. 42 sts.
  13. Rnd 20: k all sts.
  14. Rnd 21: *k5, k2tog; repeat from * around. 36 sts.
  15. BO loosely, leaving a long tail.

Stuff the shell lightly so it forms a dome but does not become a ball. The back side should curve outward, while the front side sits flatter against the turtle body.

Cream Shell Rim

  1. With cream yarn and US 2 needles, CO 5 sts.
  2. Knit every row until the strip measures 10 inches.
  3. BO and leave a long tail.
  4. Sew the cream strip around the shell opening.
  5. Attach the shell to the back of the body from shoulder level to lower waist.

Use small hidden stitches to secure the shell. The cream rim should be visible along the side, especially near the turtle’s right shoulder, just like the raised pale edge in the image.

Striped Sweater Collar and Cuffs

The sweater has ribbed edges around the neck, sleeves, and lower waist. These pieces help the outfit look finished and cozy.

Neck Collar

  1. With denim blue yarn and US 2 needles, CO 28 sts.
  2. Work k1, p1 rib for 5 rows.
  3. BO loosely.
  4. Sew the strip into a ring around the neck under the head.

Lower Sweater Rib

  1. With denim blue yarn, CO 48 sts.
  2. Work k1, p1 rib for 5 rows.
  3. BO loosely.
  4. Sew around the lower edge of the sweater where it meets the shorts.

For sleeve cuffs, use denim blue yarn and CO 20 sts for each cuff. Work k1, p1 rib for 4 rows, BO, and sew around the end of each sleeve above the green hand.

Small Sweater Mushrooms

The sweater front has tiny red mushrooms near the lower belly. Add three small mushrooms using duplicate stitch or embroidery. Keep them low on the cream stripe so they look like little woodland decorations.

  • Stems: use beige yarn and make 3 short vertical stitches.
  • Caps: use red yarn and make 3 small semicircle satin stitches above each stem.
  • Spots: use cream yarn and add 2 tiny straight stitches on each red cap.
  • Grass: use dark green yarn and add 2 or 3 short slanted stitches under the mushrooms.

Facial Expression

The expression should be gentle and curious. The eyes are close together and slightly forward. The large snout should remain plain, without a mouth, unless you prefer a tiny soft smile.

  • For a photo-accurate look, keep the black eyes glossy and round.
  • Place the eyes low on the cream ovals, not centered high.
  • Do not add eyebrows; the raised green rims provide enough expression.
  • If embroidering a mouth, use one very small dark green stitch under the snout curve.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  2. Add the blue shorts cuffs around the tops of the legs.
  3. Sew the arms to the upper sides of the striped sweater.
  4. Attach the head securely to the neck, making sure the snout faces forward.
  5. Sew the cream eye pads to the head and add the black eyes.
  6. Add green eye rims around both eye pads.
  7. Sew the brown shell to the back and add the cream shell rim.
  8. Attach the crossbody bag and position the strap diagonally across the sweater.
  9. Embroider the small mushrooms on the sweater front.
  10. Add the red mushroom accessory to the side of the head.
  11. Make the sandals and sew the straps over the green feet.
  12. Place the hat and basket beside the turtle for the complete display.

When all pieces are attached, gently squeeze and shape the toy. Round the snout with your palms, lift the eye pads slightly, and smooth the sweater stripes. A small amount of shaping makes the turtle look much closer to the soft handmade character in the image.

Care Notes

Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap. Do not soak the turtle, because the stuffing may shift and the embroidered details may loosen. Press with a clean towel and reshape while damp.

  • Keep away from high heat.
  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, toothpicks, or decorative pieces are used.
  • For a child-safe version, embroider the eyes and omit hard needle accessories.
  • Store the hat and basket separately when not on display.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is large, rounded, and slightly forward-facing.
  • The cream eye pads are tall ovals with black eyes placed low.
  • The sweater has alternating denim blue and cream stripes.
  • The shorts and cuffs are denim blue and sit below the sweater.
  • The shell is brown with a visible cream rim.
  • The sandals have brown soles, brown straps, and a small leaf detail.
  • The cream crossbody bag has a flower on the flap.
  • The tiny red mushrooms have cream spots.
  • The blue hat has a ribbed brim and mushroom patch.
  • The basket contains small yarn balls and tiny knitting needles.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, support the head and shell when handling the turtle. Avoid pulling the bag strap or mushroom accessory. If a detail loosens, use matching yarn and a tapestry needle to secure it with two or three small stitches.

For long-term display, keep the turtle away from direct sunlight so the green, blue, red, and brown yarn colors stay bright. Place it on a dry shelf with enough space around the head, shell, hat, and basket.

If dust collects, use a soft dry brush and move in the direction of the knitted stitches. Brush gently around the mushroom spots, flower, shell rim, and embroidered sweater details.
