Knitting Tutorial: Little Elephant in Blue Fair Isle Overalls – Free Knitting Pattern.
This sweet knitted elephant is designed with a rounded gray head, oversized ears, a long tapered trunk, soft arms and legs, blue Fair Isle overalls, a green scarf, a tiny red pom-pom hat, flower details, a crossbody pouch, brown sandals, and matching miniature picnic props. The finished toy has a cozy handmade garden look, just like the elephant shown in the photo.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is written in US English knitting terms. The elephant is worked mostly in the round using double-pointed needles or the magic loop method. Small accessories are worked flat or in short rounds, then sewn securely into place. The body is shaped to fit the blue overalls, while the head is made separately so the trunk can sit forward and slightly downward.
The image shows a soft toy with firm stuffing, visible stockinette stitches, large rounded ears, a narrow trunk, and a wide outfit section. The overalls sit high on the chest with two straps, two small buttons, a cream Fair Isle band, blue ribbed cuffs, and a little crossbody pouch. This pattern recreates those details with clear stitch counts and shaping.
Finished Size
- Main elephant: about 10.5 to 11.5 inches tall from feet to top of head, not including the tiny hat.
- Head width with ears: about 8.5 to 9 inches across.
- Body width: about 4.25 inches at the widest part of the overalls.
- Trunk length: about 2.75 inches from face to tip.
- Mini bear and bunny: about 3 inches tall each.
- Sun hat: about 4.5 inches wide.
- Basket: about 2.25 inches wide.
Skill Level
Intermediate beginner to intermediate. You should be comfortable knitting in the round, increasing, decreasing, changing colors, picking up stitches, making small pieces, and sewing toy parts together. The Fair Isle section uses only two colors per round and can be knitted slowly with short floats.
Materials
- DK weight yarn in light gray for elephant head, trunk, ears, arms, legs, and feet.
- DK weight yarn in denim blue for overalls, straps, pouch, and cuffs.
- DK weight yarn in cream for Fair Isle pattern, foot soles, hat brim, and small accents.
- DK weight yarn in soft green for scarf and flower headband vine.
- DK weight yarn in brown for sandals, basket, and mini bear.
- DK weight yarn in beige or straw for the sun hat.
- DK weight yarn in red for the tiny pointed hat.
- Small amounts of pink, yellow, white, and pale green yarn for flowers.
- Small amount of black yarn or two 6 mm safety eyes for elephant eyes.
- Two tiny tan buttons for the overall straps.
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- US size 3 knitting needles, or size needed for a firm fabric.
- US size 2 knitting needles for smaller accessories if you want a tighter finish.
- Tapestry needle.
- Stitch markers.
- Scrap yarn or stitch holders.
- Small pom-pom maker or fork for the white pom-pom.
Gauge
24 stitches and 32 rounds = 4 inches in stockinette stitch using DK yarn and US size 3 needles. Gauge is not critical for a toy, but the fabric must be tight enough so stuffing does not show through. Use smaller needles if your stitches look loose.

Helpful Notes Before You Start
- Knit the elephant body, head, ears, arms, legs, and trunk firmly. A tight fabric keeps the shape smooth and rounded.
- Stuff gradually as you work. The head should be firm, the trunk medium firm, and the ears lightly stuffed or left nearly flat.
- Use mattress stitch or a neat whipstitch for assembly.
- When working the Fair Isle band, keep floats loose so the overalls do not pull inward.
- The overalls are knitted as part of the lower body for a smooth toy finish.
- Small props are optional, but they complete the garden picnic scene shown in the photo.

Flower Details for the Outfit
The image uses small flowers on the headband, pouch, and sandals. These little flowers help tie the elephant into the garden setting. Use leftover yarn and keep each flower tiny.

- Round flower: CO 12 sts, k2tog across, pull into a circle, and secure with a center stitch.
- Leaf: CO 5 sts, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1 for one row, then BO. Sew beside flowers.
- Best placement: Add 5 flowers to the headband, 3 flowers to the pouch, and 1 flower to each sandal.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
- Check that the body stands straight before sewing the head firmly in place.
- Make sure both ears are level and spread outward like rounded elephant ears.
- Sew the trunk down only at the base so the lower trunk remains softly dimensional.
- Attach the scarf after the head is secure, then tack it in two hidden places.
- Sew the hat after the flower headband so it sits slightly behind the flowers.
- Add the overalls buttons last so they sit cleanly on top of the straps.
- Place the pouch diagonally across the chest and sew it lightly to prevent twisting.
- Shape the feet and sandals with your fingers so the toes face forward.
Care Notes
Spot clean the elephant with cool water and mild soap. Do not soak the toy if you used buttons, safety eyes, or a pom-pom. Let it air dry flat on a towel. Reshape the ears, trunk, scarf, and sandals while damp.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- Head is round, firm, and centered on body.
- Trunk is sewn straight down the front.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Keep the finished knitted elephant away from direct sunlight for long periods, especially if it is displayed outdoors for photos. Sunlight can fade blue, green, and red yarn over time. Store the toy in a dry place with good airflow.
For dust removal, use a soft brush and gently sweep over the ears, scarf, overalls, pouch, and hat. Avoid pulling on the Fair Isle floats or small flower details. If a flower becomes loose, sew it back with matching yarn and a small tapestry needle.
When storing the elephant, do not compress the ears or trunk. Lay the toy flat or place it upright with light support behind the body. Keep the mini props in a small cloth bag so the basket handles, bunny ears, and tiny bear limbs do not snag.
This completes the Little Elephant in Blue Fair Isle Overalls knitting pattern, including the outfit, floral accessories, sandals, pouch, hat, and small picnic-style display pieces shown in the image.
