Crochet Tutorial: Hedgehog Lavender Garden Greenhouse – Free Crochet Pattern.
This crochet scene recreates a cozy lavender garden greenhouse with three round hedgehogs, a mint-green ribbed roof, white window frames, potted lavender, a picnic blanket, a basket, lemonade set, fruit tart, watering can, bees, butterfly, garden sign, stepping stones, arched trellis, and white picket fence. The project is built as a soft display diorama with many small, detailed pieces.

Pattern Overview
This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is designed as a detailed display piece. The finished garden measures about 12 in wide, 14 in deep, and 10 in tall when made with sport-weight cotton yarn and a 2.25 mm hook.
The greenhouse is made from firm crochet strips joined over a flat garden base. The roof is crocheted as two ribbed mint panels, then attached at an angle. The garden includes separate movable decorations so you can arrange the lavender pots, picnic pieces, and hedgehogs as shown.

Gauge
Using a 2.25 mm hook and sport-weight cotton, 8 sc x 8 rounds should measure about 1 in. Exact gauge is not critical, but tight tension is important. If the greenhouse strips feel floppy, go down a hook size or add wire inside the frame pieces.
Important Construction Notes
- Work amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
- Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of every round.
- Stuff hedgehogs firmly enough to hold their shape, but do not overstuff the snouts.
- For a display piece, insert thin wire into fence posts, greenhouse posts, and the trellis before closing the crochet strips.
- Block flat panels lightly before assembly so the greenhouse sits squarely.

Garden Base
The garden base is a flat rectangle with soft grass on one side and a red gingham picnic blanket on the front left. The greenhouse stands toward the back, with lavender pots around the sides and stepping stones leading to the doorway.
Large Base Panel
Use sage green yarn and the 2.75 mm hook.
- Ch 49.
- Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. 48 sc.
- Rows 2-54: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. 48 sc.
- Border Round 1: Ch 1, work 1 sc evenly around all four sides, placing 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl st.
- Border Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, working 3 sc in each corner stitch. Join and FO.
For a firmer display base, crochet a second matching rectangle. Place plastic canvas between the two panels and sc around both layers together with sage green. This gives the garden floor a neat, raised edge like the pictured base.
Picnic Blanket Panel
Use red and white yarn with the 2.75 mm hook. Carry the unused color loosely along the wrong side.
- With red, ch 25.
- Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. 24 sc.
- Rows 2-24: Ch 1, sc across. Change color every 4 stitches and every 4 rows to make a gingham effect.
- Border: With white, sc evenly around, placing 3 sc in each corner. Join and FO.
Sew the blanket to the front left area of the base. Keep the front and left edges about 1 row away from the base border. Leave a small opening under one corner if you want to tuck the picnic basket slightly under it.
White Picket Fence
The fence surrounds the garden but leaves the greenhouse doorway visible. Make four fence strips: front, left side, right side, and back short sections. Each picket has a rounded top, matching the soft white fence in the image.
Fence Pickets
Use white yarn and the 2.25 mm hook. Make 34 pickets.
- Ch 7.
- Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 4 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Working on opposite side of chain, sc in next 5 ch. FO, leaving a tail.
Fence Rails
Use white yarn. Make two long front rails, two back rails, and four side rails.
- Front rail: Ch 47, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. FO. Make 2.
- Back rail: Ch 37, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. FO. Make 2.
- Side rail: Ch 45, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. FO. Make 4.
Lay the pickets vertically and sew two rails across them, one near the bottom and one through the middle. Space the pickets evenly with a small gap between each. Sew the fence around the base edge, leaving a 4 in opening at the front right for the garden path and trellis.
Greenhouse Frame
The greenhouse is built from cream crochet posts and window bars. The front has a tall open doorway and a triangular roof gable. The side walls show rectangular window grids. The frame should be firm, straight, and slightly raised from the garden floor.
Firm Crochet Frame Strips
Use cream yarn and the 2.25 mm hook. For extra structure, crochet over thin craft wire or insert wire through the finished tubes.
Long Vertical Posts
Make 8.

Layout and Assembly Order
- Prepare the large green base and sew the gingham picnic blanket in the front-left area.
- Sew the greenhouse floor mat to the back center of the base.
- Build the greenhouse frame flat, then sew it upright onto the base.
- Attach the tan lower wall panels to the greenhouse frame.
- Sew the mint roof panels together at the ridge and attach the roof to the frame.
- Place the bench and mini flower pots inside the greenhouse.
- Sew the stepping stones from the front path toward the greenhouse entrance.
- Attach the fence around the base, leaving the front-right garden entrance open.
- Sew the trellis arch to the front-right entrance and wrap it with vines and flowers.
- Arrange lavender pots around the greenhouse, on both sides, and near the front corners.
- Place the watering can near the left lavender pots.
- Place the sign on the right side of the greenhouse.
- Add the hedgehogs to the picnic blanket, with the largest hedgehog at front left and two smaller hedgehogs behind the tart.
- Add the basket, tart, pitcher, and glasses to the picnic blanket.
- Attach bees, butterfly, grass tufts, and extra flowers last.
Detailed Placement Guide
The largest hedgehog should face slightly toward the center of the blanket. Place the two smaller hedgehogs behind the tart, close together, with their noses pointing forward. This arrangement creates the family picnic look seen in the image.
The watering can belongs to the left of the blanket near the lavender pots. The sign should stand on the right side, just outside the greenhouse wall. The trellis should sit in the front-right corner, partly attached to the fence.
Place taller lavender pots behind the small ones so the garden looks layered. Add several gray stones around the sign and greenhouse door. Keep the greenhouse doorway open so the interior bench and flowers remain visible.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Embroider hedgehog eyes with small black vertical stitches. Add brown noses and tiny smiling mouth stitches. Brush the spine loops gently with your fingers to make them rounded and fluffy. Check that all small pieces are sewn securely, especially bees, glasses, and flowers.
Care Notes
This project is best used as a decorative display. Keep it away from moisture, direct sunlight, and rough handling. If you used cardboard inside the base or roof, do not soak the piece. Spot clean only with a slightly damp cloth.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The base is flat and firm.
- The greenhouse frame stands straight.
- The roof overhangs evenly on both sides.
- The doorway remains open.
- All lavender pots are secure.
- The hedgehog faces are centered and neat.
- The picnic pieces are arranged clearly on the blanket.
- The fence and trellis are attached firmly.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Dust the greenhouse gently with a soft brush. Lift the piece from the base instead of the roof. Store it in a box with tissue around the trellis, bees, and lavender stems. For long-term display, keep it behind glass or on a shelf where the small pieces will not be bumped.
