Crochet Tutorial: Teapot Herb Fairy Greenhouse – Free Crochet Pattern

This whimsical crochet display features a cream teapot greenhouse with a sage-green spout, curling handle, open window lid, glowing garland, tiny herb pots, ivy vines, bees, butterflies, a round garden table, seed tray, and two little mouse gardeners. The finished piece is designed as a detailed tabletop scene with soft amigurumi shaping, garden textures, and miniature accessories.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Teapot greenhouse: about 8.5 in wide from spout to handle, 6 in tall to rim, and 9 in tall with the lid open.
  • Mouse gardeners: about 2.75 in tall when seated.
  • Herb pots: about 1.25 in tall each.
  • Whole display: about 12 in wide when arranged like the photo.

Skill Level

Intermediate, but written with careful step-by-step counts. You should know how to work in continuous rounds, join rounds, crochet through front or back loops, sew amigurumi pieces together, and embroider small details.

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton or cotton-blend yarn in cream, sage green, terracotta, medium green, dark green, light green, lavender, purple, yellow, brown, tan, pale pink, gray, white, sky blue, dusty rose, and black.
  • Sport or DK weight yarn for small details, vines, flower centers, labels, bees, and facial stitching.
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for teapot, pots, table, tray, and mice.
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook for herbs, leaves, bees, butterflies, tiny flowers, and lettering details.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Plastic canvas or firm cardboard for the teapot base, back window lid, and inner floor.
  • Yarn needle, stitch markers, scissors, pins, and fabric glue if desired.
  • Optional warm-white micro fairy light strand for the garland effect. Use battery lights only and never leave lights unattended.
  • Small black safety eyes, 4 mm, or black embroidery thread for the mice.

Abbreviations in US Terms

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st or sts: stitch or stitches
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge

With worsted yarn and a 3.0 mm hook, 6 sc and 6 rounds measure about 1 inch. Exact gauge is less important than firm fabric. Your stitches should be tight enough that stuffing does not show through the teapot walls, mice, or pots.

Important Construction Notes

  • Work most amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
  • The teapot body is intentionally slightly oval and open in the front, like a tiny greenhouse room.
  • The cream body uses vertical ribbed panels, while the sage rim, spout, and handle create the soft garden color contrast shown in the image.
  • The open square lid has a mesh window and raised cream grid bars.
  • All miniatures are sewn or tacked in place after the main teapot is finished.

Teapot Greenhouse Body

The body begins with an oval floor. It grows upward into a rounded teapot shape, then the front opening is created by working rows instead of full rounds. Keep the front opening centered because it frames the herb pots inside.

  2. Round 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 16 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Working on the opposite side of the chain, sc in next 16 ch, 2 sc in last ch. 38 sts.

Place markers at the center front. Count 22 stitches for the front opening. You will stop crocheting across those 22 stitches and work back and forth across the remaining 50 stitches to create the wall and roof curve.

  1. Row 16: sc 50, ch 1, turn. Leave the remaining 22 sts unworked for the opening.
  2. Row 17: dec, sc 46, dec. 48 sts. Ch 1, turn.

  12. Row 27: dec, sc 36, dec. 38 sts. Ch 1, turn.
  13. Row 28: sc across. 38 sts. FO, leaving a long tail.

Opening Border

The thick rounded cream border around the greenhouse opening gives the teapot its cozy handmade look. Work slowly so the opening remains even.

  1. Join cream yarn at the lower right corner of the opening.
  2. Round 1: sc evenly up the right side with 18 sc, sc 38 across the top edge, sc evenly down the left side with 18 sc, sc 22 across the lower front edge. Join with sl st. 96 sts.
  3. Round 2: ch 1, reverse sc around the entire opening. Join, FO, and weave in ends.
  4. With sage green yarn, work one surface slip stitch line around the inside lower floor edge.

Vertical Ribbed Body Panels

The teapot in the image has visible soft vertical ribbing on the cream body. These raised lines are added after the wall is finished.

  1. Thread a yarn needle with cream yarn.
  2. Starting at the lower base edge, surface stitch one vertical line from the base to the upper rim on the left front side.
  3. Repeat every 4 stitches around the visible body, making 12 to 14 raised cream ribs.
  4. Keep the stitches slightly loose so they sit on top of the crochet instead of pulling the body inward.

Sage Green Top Rim

The top rim is a thick oval ring that sits above the teapot opening and supports the open window lid. The rim should be sage green on top with cream just below it.

  1. With sage green yarn, ch 60. Join carefully with sl st to form a ring.
  2. Round 1: ch 1, sc around. 60 sts.
  3. Round 2: repeat sc 9, inc around. 66 sts.
  4. Round 3: BLO sc around. 66 sts.
  5. Round 4: sc around. 66 sts.
  6. Round 5: sl st around loosely. FO, leaving a long tail.
  7. Pin the rim to the top edge of the teapot body, slightly oval from front to back.
  8. Sew through both layers with small whipstitches. Stuff lightly under the rim as you sew if it needs more rounded thickness.

Open Window Lid

The raised lid is a square cream crochet frame with a mesh center and a 3 by 3 window grid. It sits upright behind the rim, with a tiny loop at the top like a teapot lid handle.

Lid Outer Frame

  1. With cream yarn and 3.0 mm hook, ch 29.
  2. Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 28 sts. Ch 1, turn.

  5. Work 28 sc along the foundation chain edge.
  6. Work 24 sc up the other side. Join to first stitch.
  7. Continue working around the rectangle for 3 more rounds, placing 3 sc in each corner stitch on every round.

Care Notes

Keep the finished greenhouse dry and away from direct sunlight to protect the colors and shaping. If you use real battery fairy lights, remove the battery pack before cleaning. This design is a decorative piece and is not intended for babies or pets because it contains small sewn parts.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The teapot has a sage spout on the left and a cream ivy-covered handle on the right.
  • The square lid stands open with a 3 by 3 raised window grid.
  • The front opening is bordered and shows herb pots inside.
  • Both mice have ears, eyes, noses, whiskers, clothes, and garden tools.
  • The sign reads Herb Fairy Greenhouse.
  • Bees, butterflies, vines, flowers, tiny cups, seed tray, and yarn balls are added.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Dust gently with a soft brush, working from the top lid down to the base. For small stains, dab with a barely damp cloth and let the piece air dry completely. Do not machine wash, soak, or wring the display because the structured teapot, window lid, and miniature accessories may lose their shape.

Store the greenhouse in a box with tissue paper around the spout, handle, and lid. Keep the mice, pots, and vines supported so they are not crushed. If any plant leaves flatten over time, reshape them gently with your fingers and secure them again with a small stitch if needed.
