Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is written in US English knitting terms and is worked mostly in the round on double-pointed needles or with the magic loop method. The doll has a plump triangular chick head with softly rounded corners, a narrower neck, a rounded body hidden under a green pinafore dress, short wings, slim legs, and oversized three-toed feet.
The finished doll is made to sit on a shelf, bench, or picnic table just like the photo. The head is intentionally large and slightly wider than the body. The dress has a straight skirt, front bib, shoulder straps, small button details, and flower embroidery placed low on the skirt and on the bib pocket.
To match the image closely, keep the fabric firm. Stuff the head and body fully, but do not overstuff the wings, straps, bag, hat brim, tulip leaves, or watering can handle. A firm gauge prevents stuffing from showing and helps the doll keep the rounded chick shape.
Finished Size
- Seated chick height: about 11 in from bottom of sandals to top of head flowers.
- Head width: about 5.25 in at widest point.
- Body with dress: about 5 in tall from neck to hem.
- Leg length: about 2.5 in before sandals.
- Sun hat: about 4.75 in wide across brim.
- Tote bag: about 2.25 in tall, not including handle.
- Potted tulips: about 3.5 in tall.
- Watering can: about 2.5 in wide including handle and spout.
Skill Level
Confident beginner to intermediate. You should know how to knit, purl, increase, decrease, pick up stitches, knit small pieces in the round, seam neatly, and embroider simple lazy-daisy flowers. Beginners can make the doll by working slowly and checking each stitch count before moving to the next section.
Materials
- Worsted weight yarn in soft chick yellow, about 120 yd.
- Worsted weight yarn in sage green, about 90 yd.
- Small amounts of orange, white, sky blue, darker blue, cream, tan, pink, coral, red, yellow, brown, and leaf green yarn.
- US size 3 knitting needles or double-pointed needles.
- US size 2 needles for small accessories if you want denser fabric.
- Polyester fiberfill stuffing.
- Two 12 mm black safety eyes or glossy black buttons.
- Two tiny tan buttons for dress straps.
- Two tiny red beads or red French knots for sandal ladybugs.
- Tapestry needle.
- Stitch markers.
- Removable stitch markers or scrap yarn.
- Small amount of floral cotton fabric for lining the tote, optional.
- Black embroidery thread for eyebrows.
Gauge
Gauge: 6 stitches and 8 rounds equal 1 in in stockinette stitch on US size 3 needles, measured after firm stuffing. Gauge is important because the doll needs a compact knitted surface. If your fabric is loose, go down one needle size.

Pattern Notes
- Work the chick head, body, wings, legs, and feet in firm stockinette stitch.
- The chick head is shaped wider through the cheeks and flatter at the lower edge, giving the rounded triangular look shown in the photo.
- The eyes are large white knitted ovals with blue inner circles and black domed centers.
- The beak is a small orange stuffed cone with a shallow center line.
- The green dress is worked separately and fitted over the body before final arm placement.
- All small flowers are knitted or embroidered after the main pieces are finished.
- Leave long yarn tails on every small piece for sewing.
Chick Head
The head is the most important shape in this project. It should look like a soft yellow chick face with a rounded crown, full cheeks, and a slightly narrower lower edge near the neck. Stuff gradually as you knit so the corners remain rounded instead of pointed.

- Sew one foot to the bottom of each leg.
- Place each sandal under a foot and stitch around the edge to secure.
- Sew the head flower cluster on the upper right side.
- Add final embroidery flowers to the skirt after the doll is fully assembled.
Flower Placement on the Dress
The dress in the image has small flowers placed naturally, not in perfect rows. Put a pink flower near the lower left skirt, a yellow flower near the center, a blue flower on the lower right, and a red flower on the bib pocket. Add tiny leaves around each flower.
- Left lower skirt: one pink flower with green stem and two leaves.
- Center lower skirt: one small yellow flower with a short stem.
- Right lower skirt: one blue flower and one small yellow flower close together.
- Bib pocket: one red flower with yellow center and two green leaves.
- Optional extra detail: add one tiny coral flower near the left hem.
Making the Seated Pose
To make the chick sit like the photo, attach the legs to the lower front rather than the exact bottom center. The feet should point forward and slightly outward. The dress hem should rest over the tops of the legs, hiding the joins.
If the doll leans backward, add a little extra stuffing to the lower front body. If the head leans forward too much, reinforce the neck with several firm stitches from the back of the head down into the upper body.
Optional Stabilizing Stitching
- Use yellow yarn to make two hidden stitches from the underside of the head to the back body.
- Use green yarn to tack the back of the dress to the body.
- Use orange yarn to secure each leg at two points under the skirt.
- Use cream yarn to stitch the sandals directly to the orange feet.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check the face from the front, side, and above. The eyes should be large and expressive, the beak should sit centered and slightly raised, and the eyebrows should be small curved stitches. Add a tiny extra stitch under the beak if you want the lower edge to look more rounded.
Brush the yellow knitted surface gently with clean fingers to smooth the stitches. Do not brush aggressively, because the chick should keep a neat knitted texture rather than a fuzzy surface. Arrange the head flowers so the coral flower is most visible at the front.
Care Notes
This doll is intended as a decorative handmade item. Because it includes buttons, embroidered details, and small accessories, it is not recommended for children under three years old. If making for a child, replace buttons and beads with secure embroidery.
- Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if using safety eyes, buttons, or beads.
- Air dry flat on a towel.
- Reshape the head, dress, flowers, and accessories while damp.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- Head is firmly stuffed and wider than the body.
- White eye ovals are tall, even, and close together.
- Blue irises sit low on the white eye ovals.
- Orange beak is centered between the eyes.
- Eyebrows are small, curved, and lightly stitched.
- Dress bib is centered with two tan buttons.
- Skirt has flower embroidery on both lower sides.
- Legs hang evenly and feet point forward.
- Sandals include green straps and tiny ladybugs.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the finished chick in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Long exposure to strong sunlight can fade yellow, green, pink, and blue yarn over time. Keep the small accessories together in a shallow basket or display tray when not in use.
For dust, use a soft dry cloth or a clean makeup brush. Support the embroidered flowers with one hand while cleaning around them. If the doll is flattened during storage, gently squeeze the stuffing back into shape and smooth the dress hem with your fingers.
To preserve the seated shape, do not hang the doll by the head, wings, straps, or bag handle. Let the doll sit naturally on a shelf or table. If needed, place a small folded cloth behind the body for display support.
