Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern creates a seated kitten doll inspired by the pictured knitted toy. The main figure has a large rounded head, small folded ears, a compact stuffed body, short arms, sitting legs, and layered clothing details. The sweater uses blue, rust, cream, and gold stripes with fox motifs across the front.

The finished doll is intended to look soft, slightly plump, and handmade. The head is larger than the body, the paws are small and rounded, and the accessories are intentionally miniature. Work at a firm gauge so the stuffing does not show through the knitted fabric.

  • Finished kitten height: about 11 inches seated, not including ears.
  • Finished hat width: about 5 inches across when lightly stuffed or shaped.
  • Skill level: advanced beginner to intermediate.
  • Construction: mostly worked in the round, with a few flat pieces.
  • Gauge: 7 stitches and 10 rounds = 1 inch in stockinette on smaller needles.

Important Gauge and Shaping Notes

Use a tight gauge for all stuffed pieces. If your knitted fabric stretches and shows stuffing, go down one needle size. The image shows dense, even stitches with smooth rounded shaping, so firm fabric is important.

The head should be about one and one-half times wider than the body. The face must remain soft and rounded, not flat. Stuff the head firmly at the sides and crown, then slightly less firmly at the lower cheeks so the muzzle can sit forward.

The sweater and pants are knitted as part of the doll for a clean toy finish. The separate hat, mug, mushroom, acorns, and satchel create the full display shown in the image.

Main Kitten Head

Work the head in the round from the top down. Use cream as the main color. Add light gray tabby patches by duplicate stitch after knitting, which keeps the shaping beginner-friendly and gives you better placement control.

Place the safety eyes between Rnds 23 and 24, about 12 stitches apart. The eyes in the image sit wide and low on the rounded face, giving the kitten a sweet expression. Do not place them too high.

Tabby Face Patches

The kitten has soft gray markings on both sides of the head, with a pale cream center face. Work these as duplicate stitch so they sit neatly on the knitted fabric.

  • On the left side of the head, duplicate stitch a gray oval from Rnds 18-29, about 8 sts wide at the fullest point.
  • On the right side, duplicate stitch a matching gray oval, slightly higher and softer at the edge.
  • Add three short gray forehead stripes using duplicate stitch over Rnds 15-20.
  • Add two tiny gray cheek strokes on each side using straight stitches.
  • Keep the center muzzle area cream.

Muzzle and Nose

The muzzle is made from two small cream ovals sewn side by side. This creates the rounded kitten cheeks visible under the eyes. The pink nose and mouth are embroidered after the muzzle is attached.

Make Two Muzzle Ovals

  1. With cream, CO 6 sts.
  2. Row 1: P all sts.
  3. Row 2: Kfb, K4, kfb. 8 sts.

Sew the two ovals beneath the eyes, touching at the center. Lightly stuff each oval before closing the last few stitches. The top of the muzzle should sit around Rnd 27 of the head.

With pink yarn, embroider a small triangular nose centered above the muzzle join. Make 5 horizontal satin stitches across 3 stitches, then bring one vertical stitch down to form the mouth line. Add two short diagonal pink stitches to form a gentle kitten smile.

Folded Kitten Ears

The ears are small, rounded, and slightly folded forward. Each ear has a cream outer shape and a soft gray inner shadow.

Fox Motif on Sweater

The sweater front has a row of rust fox faces with cream cheeks and dark noses. Work the motifs after knitting by duplicate stitch. This makes the pattern easier and keeps the colorwork from pulling tight.

  • Rnd 16: Work 2 rust duplicate stitches centered on the front.

Add one partial fox face to the left and one to the right using the same method over 8 stitches each. Let the side foxes curve around the body slightly, as shown on the sweater.

  7. Attach the mug to one paw, keeping the paw rounded.
  8. Place the headband around the crown and secure it with hidden stitches.

Facial Embroidery

The kitten expression depends on gentle placement. Keep the nose small, the mouth soft, and the whisker marks light. The face should look friendly, not overly detailed.

  • Use pink yarn for the nose and mouth.
  • Use gray yarn for subtle cheek lines.
  • Use black thread only for tiny eye highlights or fox noses.
  • Add a single white highlight stitch near each safety eye if desired.
  • Do not pull embroidery too tight, or the face will pucker.

Adding the Tabby Stripes

After the doll is assembled, add final tabby details. Use gray yarn and duplicate stitch on the forehead and sides of the face. The markings should look soft and blended, not like sharp stripes.

  • Add one center forehead stripe, 5 rounds long.
  • Add one shorter stripe on each side of the forehead.
  • Add two cheek marks on the left side and two on the right side.
  • Add light gray shading near each ear base.

Finishing the Sweater Details

The sweater should look handmade, warm, and slightly rustic. After duplicate stitching the foxes, check the stripe balance. The rust and blue stripes should be bold, while the cream bands give space for the fox motif.

  • Use rust yarn for the fox head shapes.
  • Use cream yarn for the fox cheeks and chin areas.
  • Use black or dark brown for each fox nose.
  • Add tiny black eye stitches only after all duplicate stitching is finished.
  • Steam lightly from a distance if the motif looks uneven, but do not press flat.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the doll from the front, side, and top before securing the last threads. The head should be round and large, the body compact, the legs seated forward, and the accessories placed naturally. Add the hat, mushroom, and acorns beside the doll for the complete cozy woodland scene.

  • Shape the cheeks by gently rolling the stuffed head between your palms.
  • Pin the ears before sewing so both sides match.
  • Secure the headband at the back and under the berry cluster.
  • Use small hidden stitches to hold the mug in the paw.
  • Trim all yarn tails close only after checking the full display.

Care Notes

This doll is a decorative handmade item. Spot cleaning is best, especially because it includes small stitched accessories, safety eyes, embroidery, and shaped pieces. Avoid rough washing, twisting, or machine drying.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Blot with a towel instead of rubbing.
  • Reshape the head, feet, and accessories while damp.
  • Let the doll air dry completely before storing.
  • Keep away from pets and very young children if small parts are attached.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is firmly stuffed and larger than the body.
  • The eyes are even and placed low on the face.
  • The muzzle has two rounded cheeks and a small pink nose.
  • The sweater has blue, rust, gold, and cream stripes.
  • The fox motifs are centered and clearly visible.
  • The pants match the sweater colors.
  • The sandals leave the cream toes visible.
  • The satchel crosses from shoulder to hip.
  • The headband has berries and leaves at the top center.
  • The hat, mug, mushroom, and acorns are finished as separate props.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the kitten doll in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Long sunlight exposure can fade the rust, blue, and pink details. If the doll is displayed on a shelf, dust it gently with a soft brush every few weeks.

For longer storage, wrap the doll loosely in acid-free tissue or clean cotton fabric. Do not compress the head, ears, pom-poms, or satchel. Keep the mushroom, acorns, and mug in a small labeled pouch so the complete set stays together.

Refresh the shape by gently pressing the body and smoothing the fabric with your hands. Avoid ironing directly on the knitted stitches. If needed, use light steam from several inches away and reshape by hand while the fibers relax.
