Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is written to recreate the photographed knitted deer doll as closely as possible using small-scale toy knitting methods. The doll is worked mostly in the round with double-pointed needles or the magic loop method. Small accessories are worked flat or in the round, then sewn on carefully.
The deer has a seated doll shape with long slim legs, a rounded body hidden under the dress, narrow arms, a very large head, a pointed caramel forehead panel, soft ears, dark hoof tips, a green dress with meadow embroidery, and a tiny brown vest. The accessories are essential to the final look, so each one is included.
- Finished deer height: about 11 inches from antler-free ear tip to sandal sole.
- Finished beret: about 3 inches wide.
- Finished shoulder bag: about 1 1/2 inches wide.
- Finished berry basket: about 1 inch tall.
- Finished watering can: about 1 3/4 inches wide including spout and handle.
- Skill level: adventurous beginner to intermediate toy knitter.
- Construction: small pieces knitted separately, stuffed, shaped, embroidered, and assembled.
Materials
- Yarn weight: sport weight or light DK yarn. Use smooth wool or cotton-blend yarn for clean stitches.
- Main deer color: warm beige, about 45 yards.
- Caramel face patch and bag color: golden tan, about 25 yards.
- Dark brown: hooves, nose, vest, acorns, sandal soles, about 25 yards.
- Medium green: dress, beret, sandal straps, leaves, about 35 yards.
- White: eye highlights, collar, flowers, mushroom stems, about 12 yards.
- Black: eye base and tiny eyelashes, about 8 yards.
- Olive green: leaf embroidery, about 5 yards.
- Red: mushroom caps, about 6 yards.
- Berry colors: purple, navy, burgundy, and raspberry scraps.
- Needles: US 2 or 2.75 mm double-pointed needles, or long circular needle for magic loop.
- Smaller needles: US 1 or 2.25 mm needles for tiny accessories if you want firmer fabric.
- Stuffing: polyester fiberfill.
- Tapestry needle: for sewing and embroidery.
- Stitch markers: at least 4.
- Black sewing thread: optional for sharper eye outlines.
- Small pins: helpful for placing ears, limbs, and vest before sewing.
Gauge
Gauge is important for a firm toy fabric. The sample look is created with tight, even stitches that hold stuffing without gaps. Work a small swatch in stockinette before starting.
- Recommended gauge: 8 stitches and 11 rounds equal 1 inch in stockinette, worked in the round.
- Fabric goal: firm but not stiff.
- Needle adjustment: go down one needle size if stuffing shows through.
- Finished size note: exact size changes slightly depending on yarn, stuffing, and embroidery tension.

Helpful Notes Before You Begin
Stuff the doll gradually as you knit. A large head needs firm stuffing at the cheeks and top so it keeps the rounded shape. The neck must be packed firmly because the head is oversized compared with the small body.
The deer in the image has visible vertical knit texture on the limbs and smooth stockinette on the face and dress. To echo that look, the arms and legs use twisted rib sections, while the head and dress use smooth stockinette with embroidery added after knitting.
- Use small amounts of stuffing and push them into corners with the back of a tapestry needle.
- Do not overstuff the ears, vest, dress hem, bag flap, or beret.
- Pin all major pieces in place before sewing.
- Embroider the face before attaching the ears if that feels easier.
- Use duplicate stitch and straight stitch for tiny meadow details.
Main Deer Head
The head is the most important piece. It should be large, round, and slightly wider at the cheeks than at the top. Work in warm beige. The caramel forehead patch is knitted separately and sewn on later so the shape can be placed exactly like the image.

Muzzle Shaping
The face in the image has a soft deer muzzle without a protruding snout. This is created with needle sculpting instead of a separate stuffed muzzle. Use warm beige yarn or strong matching thread.
- Thread a long strand of warm beige yarn through the bottom back of the head.
- Bring the needle out where the left mouth corner will sit, about 5 rounds above the lower center of the face.
- Insert the needle at the right mouth corner and exit at the back of the head.
- Pull gently to indent the smile area. Repeat once.
- Bring the needle out at the nose placement, centered between the eyes, about 6 rounds above the mouth.
- Take one tiny stitch downward and pull lightly to create a small nose dimple.
- Knot securely at the back where the head will touch the body.
Caramel Forehead Patch
The caramel patch sits at the center top of the face and comes down to a soft point between the eyes. It is ribbed vertically in the image, so this piece is worked flat in a simple knit-purl texture.
- With caramel yarn, CO 15 sts.
- Row 1, RS: K1, P1 across to last st, K1.
- Row 2, WS: P1, K1 across to last st, P1.

- Row 19: Sl1, k2tog, pass slipped st over. 1 st.
- Cut yarn and pull through. Leave a long tail for sewing.
Place the wide edge of the patch on top of the head, centered between the ears. The point should stop between the upper edges of the eyes. Sew around the edge with small hidden stitches.
Eyes, Nose, and Smile
The eyes are oversized, shiny, and expressive. They are embroidered as layered ovals with black, brown, green, white, and tiny light dots. Take your time here because the face gives the whole doll its character.
Eye Base Ovals
- Mark each eye with pins. Each oval should be about 7 sts tall and 5 sts wide.
- Place the eyes on the front of the head, separated by about 8 sts at the narrowest inner point.
- Using black yarn, satin stitch a vertical oval for each eye.
- Use brown yarn to add a lower crescent inside each black oval.
- Use olive green yarn to stitch a smaller crescent at the bottom edge of the brown area.
- Use white yarn to outline the lower edge of each eye with 2 curved stitches.
- Add a white flower-shaped highlight near the upper center of each eye using 5 tiny straight stitches.
- Add one small white dot near the lower outside edge of each eye.

Nose and Mouth
- With dark brown yarn, embroider a small upside-down triangle nose at the center of the face.
- Make 5 horizontal satin stitches across the nose, then one vertical stitch down from the center.
- Split the mouth into two curved smile lines under the nose.
- Use two short brown stitches on each side to create the soft deer smile.
- Add one tiny darker stitch at each mouth corner if you want extra definition.
Ears
The ears are large, rounded, and leaf-like, with beige outer color and softly textured inner stitches. They sit high and wide on the head. The finished ears should tilt outward at about a 45-degree angle.

Inner Ear Texture
- With a slightly darker beige or oatmeal yarn, embroider 5 long straight stitches from the lower ear base toward the rounded tip.
- Add 2 shorter stitches on each side to create a soft leaf-vein texture.
- Do not stuff the ears heavily. A single thin layer of stuffing is enough.
- Fold the lower edge slightly inward before sewing so each ear cups gently.
Ear Decorations
The left ear in the image has two tiny acorns near the base. The right ear has a red mushroom with a white stem. These decorations are knitted separately and sewn on after the ears are attached.

Attaching the Body, Head, Limbs, and Clothing
Before permanent assembly, place every major piece on a flat surface. The doll in the image lies naturally with the head tilted slightly forward, arms relaxed, and feet turned gently outward. Pinning helps keep that sweet pose.
- Sew the legs to the lower body, spaced about 5 sts apart at the front.
- Angle the feet outward slightly before securing the top of each leg.
- Slide the green dress over the body from the neck downward.
- Adjust the skirt so the embroidered hem sits evenly around the legs.
- Sew the top of the dress lightly to the body at the back neckline.
- Place the vest over the dress and sew at shoulders and underarms.
- Sew arms to the upper sides of the body, just under the vest shoulders.
- Place the head on the neck post and check the balance.
- Sew around the neck twice using strong warm beige yarn.
- Add extra stitches from the back of the head into the upper body for stability.
Attaching Ears and Ear Decorations
- Place the ears high on the head, one on each side of the caramel patch.
- The inner edge of each ear should begin about 6 rounds down from the head top.
- Angle the ears outward and slightly upward.
- Sew the lower third of each ear firmly to the head.
- Leave the upper part free so the ears look soft and dimensional.
- Sew the acorns to the left ear near the lower outside base.
- Sew the red mushroom to the right ear near the inner lower area.
- Weave in all ends inside the ear or head fabric.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check the face after the ears are attached. If the head shifted during sewing, gently reshape it with your hands. Add one or two tiny black stitches at the outer corners of the eyes to suggest lashes like the image.
- Make sure both eyes are even in height and size.
- Check that the caramel forehead patch points between the eyes.
- Reinforce the nose with one final dark brown satin stitch if needed.
- Use a single beige thread to pull the mouth corners inward if the smile needs more shape.
- Brush away loose fibers with your fingers, not a hard brush.
Accessory Placement
The accessories can be sewn to the doll or kept loose for display. In the photo, the beret, watering can, and basket sit beside the deer. The shoulder bag is worn across the body.
- Place the bag strap from the deer’s right shoulder to the left hip.
- Sew the bag lightly to the dress if the doll will be handled often.
- Set the green beret beside the head or attach it with one hidden stitch near the back.
- Place the watering can near the right side of the doll.
- Place the berry basket near the lower right side, beside the dress hem.
Care Notes
This doll is best used as a decorative handmade art toy. Because it includes small appliques, embroidered berries, acorns, mushrooms, and loose accessories, it is not recommended for children under 3 years old.
- Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if the doll has attached embroidery and accessories.
- Do not twist or wring the doll.
- Let the doll air dry flat on a towel.
- Reshape the head, ears, skirt, and accessories while damp if needed.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
To preserve the shape, store the deer doll lying flat or sitting with support behind the head. Avoid hanging it by the arms, bag strap, or ears, because small knitted seams can stretch over time.
Keep the doll away from direct sunlight for long periods. Strong light can fade green, caramel, red, and lavender yarns. If dust collects on the embroidery, lift it away gently with a soft dry cloth.
- For small stains, dab the area with cool water and a tiny amount of gentle soap.
- For the eyes, use only a barely damp cloth so the embroidery does not loosen.
- For the beret and basket, reshape with fingers after cleaning.
- For the skirt hem, smooth the mushrooms and leaves flat while drying.
- Store accessories together in a small fabric pouch if they are not sewn down.
Your Mushroom Meadow Deer Doll is finished when the soft deer face, meadow dress, brown vest, sandals, shoulder bag, beret, watering can, and berry basket all work together as one tiny woodland scene. The final doll should feel gentle, cozy, and full of small garden details, just like the knitted figure in the image.
