Pattern Overview
This pattern is written in US crochet terms. The finished project is a soft crochet diorama designed to match the image: a rectangular green garden base with a red coop at the back, a straw-covered fenced yard in front, tall sunflowers on the left, small garden details on the right, and a cute farm scene full of miniature pieces.
The project uses mostly single crochet, worked tightly so the pieces hold their shape. The coop walls are made as flat panels, lightly reinforced, then sewn into a box shape. The roof is crocheted separately with raised ridges and long straw fringe to create the layered barn-roof texture shown in the photo.
Finished size will vary with yarn and tension. With medium worsted cotton yarn and a 3.0 mm hook, the sample measures about 12 in wide, 10 in deep, and 7 in tall. Use firm stuffing, clean seams, and careful placement to keep the miniature scene neat and photo-ready.
Materials
- Yarn weight: Medium worsted cotton or cotton-blend yarn, size 4.
- Main colors: grass green, dark green, red, golden yellow, straw beige, brown, dark brown, white, black, orange, cream, gray, pale blue, yellow, sunflower yellow, mustard, tan, light pink, purple, red, and small amounts of black.
- Hook: 3.0 mm for firm amigurumi pieces and 3.5 mm for the flat base if your tension is tight.
- Stuffing: polyester fiberfill.
- Support: plastic canvas, thin cardboard, or craft foam for the base and coop walls.
- Other tools: yarn needle, stitch markers, scissors, pins, black embroidery thread, brown embroidery thread, and optional fabric glue.
- Optional safety eyes: 5 mm for the fox and 3 mm black beads for chicks, or embroider all eyes for child-safe pieces.
Abbreviations
- ch = chain

Gauge and Tension
Gauge is important because the coop and fence must stand neatly. For the amigurumi pieces, 6 sc and 6 rows should measure about 1 inch. For the base, 5 sc and 5 rows should measure about 1 inch. Crochet tightly enough that stuffing does not show through.
When making panels, keep the edges straight by chaining 1 and turning at the end of each row. Do not count the turning chain as a stitch. Block the large flat pieces lightly before assembly so the chicken coop sits squarely on the grass base.

Layered Straw Fringe
Add fringe after the panels are finished, before sewing the roof onto the coop.

- Attach fringe along the lower long edge of each roof panel by folding one strand in half, pulling the loop through a stitch, then pulling the ends through the loop.
- Add one fringe strand every other stitch for a full straw look.
- Trim the fringe to about 1 inch long at the roof edges.
- For the layered center lines, surface crochet 3 long horizontal lines across each roof panel: one near the top, one in the middle, and one near the lower third.
- On each surface line, attach shorter fringe strands every 3 stitches and trim to about 3/4 inch.
Attaching the Roof
- Place one roof panel over the front slope and one over the back slope.
- The lower roof edges should overhang the red walls by about 1/2 inch.
- Sew the top edges together along the peak.
- Place the ridge strip over the seam and sew it down securely.
- Let the fringed edges hang naturally over the front and side walls.
Chicken Yard Straw Bedding

- Keep the center slightly open for the white hen.
- Add extra loops near the front-left nest and around the chicks.

Positioning the Large Pieces
Before sewing everything permanently, place all large pieces on the base. The coop should sit at the back-right area, with its front facing the yard. The sunflower bed should sit along the left side. The straw bedding should fill the front-center yard.
- Place the red coop about 1 inch from the back edge of the green base.
- Place the straw yard directly in front of the coop door.
- Place the sunflower bed along the left side, behind the front fence line.
- Place the fence around the straw yard, leaving a small path opening near the sign.
- Place the fox outside the fence on the right side.
- Place the corn crate near the right wall of the coop.
- Place stepping stones from the front-right edge toward the coop.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
- Sew the chicken coop firmly to the green base using red yarn along the bottom edges.
- Sew the straw bedding in front of the coop, then add the curly straw loops on top.
- Sew the fence posts first, then attach the rails between the posts.
- Sew the hen in the center of the straw area. Add chicks around her in a natural scattered arrangement.
- Attach the egg nest near the front-left corner of the straw yard.
- Sew the sunflower garden bed to the left side and secure each flower stem upright.
- Add the water trough and feeder close to the hen and chicks.
- Sew the crate, seed sack, rake, shovel, sign, stones, mushrooms, grass tufts, and fox in their final positions.
- Check every face. Add tiny black eyes, small beaks, blush stitches if desired, and neat hidden knots.
Care Notes
This crochet farm scene is best used as a decorative handmade display. Because it includes small pieces, long straw loops, and many sewn details, it is not recommended for babies or pets. Keep it on a shelf, desk, craft table, or seasonal display area.
To clean, gently dust with a soft brush or lint roller. Do not pull the straw loops or flower stems. If a small part bends, reshape it with your fingers and let the piece rest flat until it holds its form again.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The coop stands straight and the roof overhangs evenly.
- The roof fringe is trimmed but still looks soft and straw-like.
- The door, windows, and flower boxes are centered and secure.
- The fence posts stand upright and rails are attached at matching heights.
- The hen, chicks, nest, and eggs are sewn firmly to the straw bedding.
- The sunflowers face forward and have varied heights.
- The sign clearly reads “SUNNY COOP.”
- The fox, mushrooms, stepping stones, tools, crate, and grass tufts are balanced around the scene.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the finished crochet chicken coop garden away from direct sunlight to protect the red coop, yellow roof, and green base from fading. Keep the piece dry and avoid placing heavy objects on top of the roof, fence, or sunflower stems.
For deeper cleaning, spot clean only. Dab the area with a slightly damp cloth and a tiny amount of mild soap. Do not soak the project, because the inner support pieces may warp. Let the scene air dry completely on a flat towel.
When storing the piece, wrap it loosely in tissue paper and place it inside a box with enough height for the roof and flowers. Do not compress the fence, sign, or fox. With gentle handling, this sunny crochet farm garden will remain bright, charming, and display-ready for a long time.
