This cozy crochet river camp scene features two sweet otters riding in a warm brown canoe, a blue winding river, green grassy banks, a mustard A-frame tent, pine trees, mushrooms, flowers, lily pads, fish, a dock, cattails, a campfire, and a little “River Camp” sign. The finished piece is designed as a soft display mat with many tiny handmade details.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Finished Size
- Full river camp mat: about 18 in long x 12 in wide when made with worsted weight yarn.
- Canoe: about 8 in long x 2.5 in wide.
- Large otter: about 4 in tall when seated.
- Small otter: about 3 in tall when seated.
- Tent: about 5.5 in wide x 5 in tall x 5 in deep.
Skill Level
Confident beginner to intermediate. This pattern uses single crochet, increases, decreases, basic shaping, surface crochet, sewing, and small amigurumi pieces. The project has many parts, but each piece is simple when worked slowly.
Materials
- Worsted weight yarn in teal blue, grass green, olive green, dark green, mustard yellow, tan, warm brown, medium brown, dark brown, cream, white, gray, black, red, yellow, orange, pale blue, and light green.
- 3.5 mm crochet hook for the mat, river, tent, canoe, and larger pieces.
- 2.75 mm crochet hook for fish, flowers, mushrooms, facial details, cattails, and tiny accessories.
- Polyester fiberfill.
- Yarn needle.
- Stitch markers.

- BLO: back loop only
- FLO: front loop only
- MR: magic ring
- FO: fasten off
- st: stitch
- rnd: round
- rep: repeat
Gauge
Gauge is not strict for this decorative scene. For a firm amigurumi look, work tightly enough that stuffing does not show. With 3.5 mm hook and worsted yarn, 16 sc x 18 rows should measure about 4 in. If your pieces look loose, use a smaller hook.
Construction Notes
- The base is made as a flat rectangular grassy mat.
- The river is crocheted as a separate curved blue strip and sewn on top of the grass.
- All small details are made separately, then sewn to the mat after the main layout is complete.
- The canoe is slightly stuffed and shaped like a long oval boat with raised ends.
- The otters are worked in continuous rounds and sewn into seated positions inside the canoe.
- Use pins before sewing so the finished scene keeps the same busy river-camp arrangement as the image.
Part 1: Grassy Display Mat
The mat is the foundation for the entire river adventure. The grass is a soft rectangle with textured stitches, matching the raised green crochet surface shown in the image. Work firmly so the base lies flat and supports the tent, canoe, trees, dock, and small decorations.
Main Grass Rectangle
Use grass green yarn and 3.5 mm hook.

The texture should look like uneven grassy ground. Do not block the mat completely smooth; a little natural bumpiness helps the camping scene look handmade and dimensional.
Raised Grass Banks
Make two long uneven bank strips to frame the river edges. Use olive green yarn.
- Ch 55.
- Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc across. Turn. 54 sc.
- Row 2: Ch 1, sc 8, hdc 8, dc 4, hdc 8, sc 10, hdc 6, dc 3, hdc 3, sc 4. Turn.
- Row 3: Ch 1, sc across all sts. FO.
Make a second strip the same way, but vary the tall stitches slightly so both banks are not identical. Sew these along both sides of the river after the river is attached.
Part 2: Curved Blue River
The river in the image is a bright teal-blue path running from the front edge to the back edge of the mat, with soft curves, embroidered white ripples, lily pads, and tiny fish. This river is worked as a long strip, then shaped while sewing.
Main River Strip
Use teal blue yarn and 3.5 mm hook.

- Rows 66-76: Ch 1, sc across. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Lay the river strip on the grass mat in a soft S-curve. Let the front of the river cover most of the lower-left area, then curve toward the right side near the dock, then travel toward the tent at the back. Pin first, then sew around the entire edge with small whip stitches.
White River Ripples
Use white yarn and a yarn needle, or surface crochet with a 2.75 mm hook.
- Make 10 short curved ripple lines on the water.

Part 3: Long Brown Canoe
The canoe is the central piece. It is warm rusty brown with golden tan edging, raised pointed ends, and a shallow open center for the two otters. Work it firmly, then lightly stuff the sides so it keeps a curved boat shape.
Canoe Bottom
Use warm brown yarn and 3.5 mm hook.

Ch 14 with tan yarn. Sew one end to each side of the basket. Place the basket inside the canoe near the small otter.
Part 21: Fishing Rod and Line
The fishing rod is a thin tan line rising from the canoe, matching the small fishing detail in the image.
- With tan yarn, ch 24 and sl st back across to make a firm cord.
- Sew one end inside the canoe near the small otter.
- Use white yarn for the fishing line. Attach it near the rod tip and let it curve down toward the river.
- For a hook detail, make one tiny black or gray stitch at the end of the line.
Assembly Layout
Before sewing everything permanently, place all pieces on the mat. The river should run lengthwise through the center. The canoe should sit slightly diagonal across the lower-middle river. The large otter sits at the back of the canoe, and the smaller otter sits near the front.
- Place the tent on the back-left grass area.
- Place the largest pine tree behind the tent.
- Place two smaller trees near the tent and upper riverbank.
- Place the dock on the right bank, touching the water.
- Place cattails near the dock and lower right bank.
- Place the campfire and sign on the left side of the river.
- Place lily pads and fish across the water.
- Place flowers, ferns, mushrooms, stones, and logs around the grassy areas.
Sew large items first, then medium accessories, then tiny decorations. This keeps the scene balanced and prevents small pieces from shifting while you work.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
- Sew the river securely to the grass mat, then sew the raised grass banks along the river edges.
- Sew the canoe to the river with hidden stitches along the bottom edge. Leave the top open and dimensional.
- Sew both otters inside the canoe. Angle their heads slightly forward so they look engaged in the river adventure.
- Add black eye highlights with a tiny white stitch beside each eye.
- Embroider small noses and soft mouths on both otters.
- Attach the paddle to the large otter’s paws and the fish to the small otter’s paws.
- Sew the tent firmly to the back-left bank so it does not collapse.
- Add white ripple stitches last so they can curve naturally around the canoe, fish, and lily pads.
Care Notes
Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap. Do not soak the full scene, because the tent, canoe, dock, and small standing pieces may lose shape. Gently press with a towel and allow the piece to air dry completely.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The river is sewn flat with a soft curved shape.
- The canoe is centered on the river and slightly diagonal.
- Both otters are secure inside the canoe.
- The tent stands upright with a visible open doorway.
- The dock, cattails, fire, sign, trees, mushrooms, flowers, fish, lily pads, and ripples are all attached.
- No loose yarn tails remain visible on the front or back.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Keep the finished crochet camp scene away from direct sunlight for long periods, because strong light can fade the yarn colors. Store it flat in a clean dry box when not displayed. If dust gathers on the small details, use a soft brush and work gently around the otters, trees, cattails, and campfire.
If the canoe, tent, or dock becomes slightly bent, reshape it by hand while dry. Avoid heavy objects on top of the piece. For long-term display, place it on a shelf, table, or tray where the raised details will not be crushed.
