Crochet Tutorial: Cherry Blossom Chicken Coop Garden – Free Crochet Pattern

This crochet scene creates a soft spring garden with a cream chicken coop, pink ribbed roof, cherry blossom tree, white picket fence, chickens, chicks, nest of eggs, vegetable bed, feed sack, watering bowl, sign, flower path, and scattered pink petals. The finished piece is designed as a display diorama with a cozy coop under blooming branches, matching the sweet handmade garden shown in the image.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Base: about 14 in wide x 11 in deep.
  • Chicken coop: about 4.75 in wide x 4.25 in deep x 4.75 in tall without roof overhang.
  • Cherry blossom tree: about 9.5 in tall from base to top blossom.
  • Large hen: about 2.5 in tall.
  • Rooster: about 2.25 in tall.
  • Chicks: about 0.8 in tall each.

Skill Level

Intermediate. This pattern uses amigurumi shaping, flat crochet panels, surface crochet, sewing, light wire support for the tree and fence, and many small decorative pieces. A confident beginner can complete it by working slowly and assembling one section at a time.

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton or cotton-blend yarn in sage green, cream, blush pink, white, brown, dark brown, yellow, orange, red, green, mint, beige, tan, pale blue, and soft gray.
  • Sport weight yarn or embroidery floss in black, pink, yellow, and brown for details.
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for most pieces.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for blossoms, leaves, petals, eggs, sign letters, and small details.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Scissors.
  • Cardboard, plastic canvas, or thin foam board for the coop walls, roof, base, sign, and ramp support.
  • Floral wire or pipe cleaners for tree branches and fence stability.
  • Hot glue or fabric glue, optional, for display-only pieces.
  • Black safety eyes, 4 mm for hen and rooster, 3 mm for chicks, or embroidered eyes.

Abbreviations in US Crochet Terms

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loops only
  • FLO: front loops only
  • st: stitch
  • rnd: round
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge

Gauge is not critical, but firm stitches are important. With worsted weight yarn and a 3.0 mm hook, 6 sc x 6 rows should measure about 1 in square. If stuffing shows through, use a smaller hook. If the panels curl too tightly, loosen your tension slightly.

Construction Notes

The whole project is built on a large green base. The chicken coop is made from separate cream wall panels with a pink ribbed roof. The tree is made from a stuffed brown trunk and wired branches wrapped in crochet tubes. Blossoms, leaves, petals, chickens, garden items, and fence pieces are sewn or glued in place after the main structure is finished.

Work amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless instructed otherwise. Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of every round. For flat panels, chain 1 at the end of each row and turn unless the pattern says not to turn.

Large Sage Garden Base

Use sage green yarn and a 3.0 mm hook. This base is a rounded rectangle with visible crochet texture, just like the raised garden mat in the image.

  1. Ch 51.
  2. Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 48 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Rotate to work along the other side of the chain. Sc in next 48 ch, 2 sc in last ch. 102 sts.

Cut a matching rounded rectangle from foam board or plastic canvas. Sew the base around the insert, or place the insert under the base and whipstitch the final edge lightly to make the garden mat firm and flat.

Subtle Grass Texture

Use sage green and mint yarn. Add small tufts around the base, especially near the fence, tree, coop ramp, and vegetable patch.

  • Join yarn with a sl st to any surface stitch.
  • Ch 4, sl st into same stitch.
  • Ch 3, sl st into same stitch.
  • Ch 5, sl st into same stitch.
  • FO and trim ends short.

Make 18 to 24 small grass tufts. Spread them unevenly for a natural garden look. The photo shows a clean surface with soft texture, so keep the tufts low and not too crowded.

Cream Chicken Coop Body

The coop is a small rectangular house with cream crochet walls, an arched doorway in the front, a warm brown nest inside, and a blush pink roof with vertical ridges. Make the walls as flat panels, then sew them around a cardboard or plastic canvas support.

Back Wall

Use cream yarn and a 3.0 mm hook.

Use cream yarn and a 3.0 mm hook. The doorway sits slightly low and centered, with a squared lower edge and rounded top.

  1. Ch 25.
  2. Rows 1-6: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 24 sts.
  3. Row 7: Sc in next 7, ch 10, skip next 10 sts, sc in next 7. 24 spaces.

  12. Row 25: Sc2tog, sc in next 12, sc2tog. 14 sts.
  13. FO, leaving a long tail.

With cream yarn, work sc evenly around the doorway edge. Place 1 sc in each row end and 2 sc at each bottom corner. FO. This makes the doorway neat and slightly raised.

Side Walls

Make 2. Use cream yarn and a 3.0 mm hook.

  1. Ch 23.
  2. Rows 1-20: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 22 sts.

Coop Floor

Use tan yarn and a 3.0 mm hook.

  1. Ch 23.
  2. Rows 1-24: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 22 sts.
  3. FO, leaving a long tail.

Coop Wall Assembly

  1. Cut plastic canvas pieces to match each wall and floor.

  4. Sew the back wall to the opposite side of that side wall.
  5. Add the second side wall to form a box.
  6. Sew the floor into the bottom of the box.
  7. Keep the doorway open and slightly curved at the top.

Pink Ribbed Roof

The roof has a soft blush pink color with vertical ridges. It sits like a simple gable roof and overhangs the front, back, and sides.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Main Roof Panel

Use blush pink yarn and a 3.0 mm hook.

  1. Ch 34.
  2. Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and across. 32 sts.
  3. Row 2: Ch 2, turn, BLO hdc in each st across. 32 sts.
  4. Rows 3-30: Repeat Row 2.
  5. FO, leaving a long tail.

Fold the roof panel in half lengthwise so the ridges run from front to back. The fold creates the roof peak. Cut a folded roof support from thin cardboard if needed, then place it under the crochet panel.

Roof Edge Trim

Use blush pink yarn and a 2.5 mm hook.

  • Join yarn at one front lower corner.
  • Sc evenly around the full roof edge, placing 3 sc at each corner.
  • On the front lower edge only, work a second row of sl st across for a neat border.
  • FO and weave in ends.

Sew the roof to the upper edges of the coop. Let the front edge extend past the doorway like the image. Do not flatten the ridges; the ribbed texture is an important visual detail.

Ramp With Ridges

The coop has a narrow cream ramp leading from the doorway to the garden base. It has raised horizontal steps.

  1. Use beige yarn and a 3.0 mm hook. Ch 10.
  2. Rows 1-22: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 9 sts.
  3. FO, leaving a long tail.
  4. Surface crochet across the ramp every 3 rows using sl st lines to create raised treads.
  5. Cut a narrow cardboard support and sew it behind the ramp.
  6. Sew the top of the ramp just inside the doorway and tack the bottom to the base.

Warm Nest Inside the Coop

The nest is visible through the doorway as a small golden-brown coil.

  1. Use golden tan yarn and a 2.5 mm hook. Ch 35.
  2. Starting in 2nd ch from hook, work 3 sc in each ch across to make a curl.
  3. FO, leaving a long tail.
  4. Coil the curl into a nest shape and sew the bottom flat.
  5. Place the nest inside the coop, visible through the door.

Cherry Blossom Tree Trunk

The tree stands behind the coop and rises above the roof. The trunk is thick at the base, then splits into many curved brown branches. Use wire only if the finished item is for display and not for small children.

Main Trunk

Use brown yarn and a 3.0 mm hook. Stuff firmly as you go.

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. Rnd 2: Inc around. 12 sts.

  9. Rnd 29: Sc in next 1, dec around. 12 sts.
  10. Rnds 30-36: Sc around. 12 sts.
  11. FO, leaving a long tail.

Insert a folded pipe cleaner or floral wire into the trunk before closing. Sew the trunk firmly to the base behind the coop. Add extra stitches around the base until it stands upright.

Thick Branches

Make 6 in brown yarn with a 2.5 mm hook. Use different lengths for a natural tree shape.

  • Branch A, make 2: 6 sc in MR, work 24 rounds of 6 sc.
  • Branch B, make 2: 6 sc in MR, work 18 rounds of 6 sc.
  • Branch C, make 2: 5 sc in MR, work 15 rounds of 5 sc.

Place a pipe cleaner inside each branch. Bend each branch slightly upward and outward. Sew two branches near the upper trunk, two at the middle, and two slightly lower, matching the spreading cherry tree shape in the image.

Small Twigs

Make 10 to 14 small twigs in dark brown yarn with a 2.5 mm hook.

  1. Ch 8 to 13, depending on desired length.
  2. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and across.

  1. Ch 4.
  2. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, 3 sc in last ch.
  3. Working along the other side, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch.
  4. Sl st to first sc and FO.

Sew petals randomly across the base. Keep the petals flat and spaced apart so the sage green base still shows. Add a few petals on the ramp and near the coop doorway for a natural fallen-blossom effect.

Optional Small Grain Scoop

The image shows a tiny pale scoop near the feed sack. Add this if you want the right side to look fuller.

  1. Use pale gray yarn and a 2.5 mm hook. Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR.
  2. Rnd 2: Inc around. 12 sts.
  3. Rnd 3: BLO sc around. 12 sts.
  4. Rnd 4: Sc around. 12 sts.
  5. Handle: Ch 8, sl st back across, sew to side.
  6. FO and sew next to the grain sack.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Place the coop slightly left of center on the base. Sew or glue the floor securely to the garden mat.
  2. Attach the ramp from the doorway to the front center of the base.
  3. Sew the tree trunk behind the coop, slightly to the right, so the branches rise over the roof.
  4. Attach thick branches first, then twigs, then leaves, blossoms, and butterflies.
  5. Sew the white fence around the outside edge of the base. Keep the fence upright with tiny hidden stitches at the bottom of each post.
  6. Place the vegetable bed at the front left. Add carrots and cabbage greens.
  7. Attach the sign near the vegetable bed, angled slightly toward the front.
  8. Place the large hen on the right side, the rooster near the tree, and the chicks around the ramp, hen, and bowl.
  9. Sew the egg basket beside the hen and place the grain sack near the right fence.
  10. Add the water dish near the front-left fence and the tiny duck beside it.
  11. Sew ground flowers and scattered petals last, filling open spaces without overcrowding the scene.

For faces, use small black embroidery knots if you are making this as a keepsake for children. Add a tiny pink stitch on the hen cheeks and chick cheeks if desired. Keep all facial features simple and soft so the animals match the gentle handmade style of the garden scene.

Care Notes

This project is best used as a decorative display piece. Because it contains small parts, shaped panels, and optional wire supports, it should not be used as a toy for babies or pets. Keep it on a shelf, craft table, nursery display, or seasonal spring decor area.

To refresh the shape, gently press the coop walls, roof, fence, and tree branches back into place with your fingers. Do not pull on the blossoms or petals, because the small stitches can loosen over time.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The coop is centered slightly left with the doorway facing forward.
  • The pink roof has visible vertical ribs and a small overhang.
  • The ramp lines up with the doorway and sits flat on the base.
  • The tree stands behind the coop and branches spread above the roof.
  • Pink and white blossoms are clustered densely at the branch tips.
  • The white fence surrounds the base with a handmade picket look.
  • The hen, rooster, chicks, egg basket, grain sack, vegetables, sign, water dish, duck, flowers, and petals are all attached securely.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Dust the finished crochet garden with a soft clean brush. A makeup brush or small paintbrush works well around the blossoms, fence, and chicken details. For light spots, dab gently with a damp cloth and mild soap, then let the piece air dry completely.

Do not machine wash the finished display. The cardboard supports, wire branches, and sewn decorations may bend or shift in water. Store the scene in a dry place away from direct sunlight to protect the pink roof, green base, and cherry blossoms from fading.

If storing for a season, place tissue paper loosely around the tree and fence. Keep the display in a box tall enough that the blossoms are not crushed. When you bring it out again, gently reshape the branches, roof, and fence before displaying.
