Finished Size

The finished doll measures about 13.5 inches from the top of the head to the bottom of the sandals when made with sport weight cotton yarn and a 2.25 mm crochet hook. The doll is designed to sit naturally on a shelf, bench, or garden-themed display.

  • Head width: about 3.6 inches
  • Body length: about 4 inches from neck to shorts
  • Leg length: about 5 inches each
  • Arm length: about 4 inches each
  • Jacket width: about 4.7 inches across when open

Skill Level

This pattern is best for confident beginners or intermediate crocheters. The basic doll uses simple amigurumi shaping, while the jacket, facial details, bag, sandals, and embroidery require patient finishing. Work slowly, count every round, and pin all parts before sewing.

Gauge and Construction Notes

Gauge is not strict, but tight stitches are important so stuffing does not show. With sport weight cotton and a 2.25 mm hook, 8 sc across and 8 rounds should measure about 1 inch. Change hook size only if your stitches look loose.

Most body pieces are worked in continuous spiral rounds. Do not join unless the pattern says to join. Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round. Stuff gradually and firmly, but keep the long arms and legs flexible enough to bend naturally.

The photographed ant has a softly rounded, slightly forward-tilted head, a long slim neck, narrow shoulders, long sitting legs, and oversized accessories. The jacket should remain open at the front so the sage-gray body and blue shorts are visible underneath.

Main Ant Head

Use sage-gray yarn and a 2.25 mm hook. The head is a large oval shape with a slightly fuller cheek area and a narrower lower jaw. Stuff firmly as you work so the head keeps the rounded cartoon form shown in the picture.

  1. R28: sc 1, dec, repeat around. (12)
  2. R29: dec around. (6)

FO, leaving a long tail. Close the final opening through the front loops of the last 6 stitches. Hide the tail inside the head. Gently shape the cheeks with your hands so the head looks wide, rounded, and friendly.

Open Mouth Insert

The pictured ant has a visible open smile under the snout. Make a small red oval insert first, then frame it with a sage-gray lower lip. This gives the mouth depth without cutting into the head piece.

Red Inner Mouth

Use red yarn and a 2.00 mm hook.

  1. R1: ch 7, sc in second ch from hook, sc 4, 3 sc in last ch, work along opposite side, sc 4, inc in last st. (14)
  2. R2: inc, sc 4, inc in next 3 sts, sc 4, inc in next 2 sts. (20)
  3. R3: sc around. (20)

FO, leaving a sewing tail. Flatten slightly into an oval. Sew the red mouth to the lower front of the head across R20-R24. Keep the top edge slightly tucked under the snout area so it looks like a smiling open mouth.

Sage Lower Lip

Use sage-gray yarn.

  1. R1: ch 15.
  2. R2: starting in second ch from hook, sc 14. (14)
  3. R3: ch 1, turn, inc, sc 12, inc. (16)

FO, leaving a long tail. Curve this strip under the red mouth and sew it along the lower edge only. This creates the lifted lower jaw visible in the image. Do not overstuff or the mouth will lose its open shape.

Orange Snout

The ant has a small rounded orange snout placed in the center of the face. It looks like a soft oval button rather than a long muzzle. Use orange yarn and stuff lightly.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)

  4. R4-R5: sc in each st around. (18)
  5. R6: sc 1, dec, repeat around. (12)

Stuff lightly. FO, leaving a long tail. Sew the snout centered on the face over R15-R18. The lower edge should sit just above the open mouth. Add two tiny black straight stitches on the front if you want nostril texture.

Large Eyes and Eyelids

The eyes are oversized and expressive with white rounds, pale pink shading, black pupils, tiny white highlights, and yellow eyelid accents. Make two matching eyes. If using safety eyes, insert them through the center of each white eye piece before sewing.

White Eye Pieces

Use white yarn and a 2.00 mm hook. Make 2.

Sl st to the first stitch and FO, leaving a sewing tail. With pale pink yarn, embroider a light crescent around the lower inside edge of each white eye. Keep the stitches soft and thin so the eye remains bright.

Black Pupils

Use black yarn and a 2.00 mm hook. Make 2, or use 10 mm black safety eyes.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)

FO. Sew one black pupil onto each white eye, placed slightly toward the outer lower side. Add one small white straight stitch on each pupil for sparkle. Sew the full eye pieces onto the head over R11-R16, about 5 stitches apart.

Yellow Eyelid Crescents

Use yellow yarn and a 2.00 mm hook. Make 2.

  1. R1: ch 12.
  2. R2: starting in second ch from hook, sl st 2, sc 3, hdc 3, sc 2, sl st 1. (11)

FO, leaving a tail. Sew one yellow crescent above the outer top edge of each eye. Angle the crescents upward slightly to copy the playful ant expression shown in the image.

Neck

The neck is slim and visible above the open jacket collar. Use sage-gray yarn. Stuff firmly enough to support the head, but do not make it too wide.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 3, inc, repeat around. (15)
  4. R4-R11: sc in each st around. (15)

Stuff firmly. FO, leaving a long tail. Sew the top of the neck to the bottom center of the head. Angle the head slightly upward and forward so the ant looks like it is happily sitting in the garden.

Body

The body is slim at the top, fuller at the belly, and narrow again at the waist where the blue shorts begin. Use sage-gray yarn for the main torso. Work in continuous rounds.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. (18)
  4. R4: sc 2, inc, repeat around. (24)
  5. R5: sc 3, inc, repeat around. (30)
  6. R6-R10: sc in each st around. (30)

  9. R15: sc 7, dec, repeat around. (24)
  10. R16-R18: sc in each st around. (24)
  11. R19: sc 6, dec, repeat around. (21)
  12. R20: sc in each st around. (21)

Stuff the body firmly at the lower belly and slightly softer at the chest. FO, leaving a long tail. Sew the neck onto the top center of the body. Make sure the body leans slightly back so the doll can sit naturally.

Blue Shorts

The shorts are worked as a separate removable-looking layer around the lower body. They should sit high on the waist and cover the tops of the long legs. Use denim blue yarn and a 2.25 mm hook.

Shorts Waist

  1. R1: ch 31, join with sl st to form a ring, making sure the chain is not twisted. (30)
  2. R2: ch 1, sc in each ch around, join with sl st. (30)
  3. R3: ch 1, BLO sc in each st around, join. (30)
  4. R4-R7: ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (30)

Try the waistband around the lower body. It should fit snugly but not pull the torso inward. Adjust by adding or removing 2 chains only if needed.

Shorts Leg Openings

  1. R8: sc 7, ch 3, skip 8 sts, sc 7, ch 3, skip 8 sts, join. This forms two leg holes.
  2. Left Leg R1: attach yarn to first leg hole, sc 18 around the opening. (18)
  3. Left Leg R2-R4: sc around. (18)
  4. Left Leg R5: sl st around loosely. FO.
  5. Right Leg R1-R5: repeat the same steps for the second leg opening.

Slide the shorts onto the body before attaching the legs, or sew them in place after the legs are attached. Add a tiny front seam with blue yarn if you want the shorts to look more tailored.

Long Legs

The legs are long, thin, and flexible, ending in rounded feet that peek through orange sandals. Use sage-gray yarn. Make 2. Stuff the feet firmly and the legs lightly so they bend over the bench edge.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 3, inc, repeat around. (15)
  4. R4-R8: sc in each st around. (15)
  5. R9: sc 3, dec, repeat around. (12)
  6. R10-R35: sc in each st around. (12)

Stuff the foot and lower leg lightly. Leave the upper leg only softly filled. Flatten the top opening. FO, leaving a long tail. Sew the legs to the lower front of the body under the shorts, about 5 stitches apart.

Toe Bumps

Use sage-gray yarn. Make 6 small toe bumps, 3 for each foot.

  1. R1: 5 sc in MR. (5)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (10)
  3. R3: sc around. (10)
  4. R4: dec around. (5)

FO and close each toe. Sew 3 toe bumps across the front of each foot. Place the middle toe slightly forward, with the side toes angled outward. This detail matches the visible toes inside the sandals.

Arms

The arms are slim and hang down beside the open jacket. Use sage-gray yarn. Make 2. Stuff the hands lightly and leave the upper arms mostly unstuffed for a soft pose.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: sc 1, inc, repeat around. (9)
  3. R3-R6: sc around. (9)
  4. R7: sc 1, dec, repeat around. (6)
  5. R8-R27: sc around. (6)

FO, leaving a long tail. Flatten the upper opening and sew the arms to the body at R18-R19 near the shoulder area. The arms should point downward and sit slightly forward, visible under the blue jacket sleeves.

Orange Sandals

The sandals are bright orange with open toes, a sole, a front strap, and a tiny side button. Make two sandals, one for each foot. Use a 2.00 mm hook for a neat fit.

Sandal Sole

Use orange yarn. Make 2.

  1. R1: ch 11, sc in second ch from hook, sc 8, 3 sc in last ch, work along opposite side, sc 8, inc in last st. (22)
  2. R2: inc, sc 8, inc in next 3 sts, sc 8, inc in next 2 sts. (28)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, sc 8, repeat sc 1, inc three times, sc 8, repeat sc 1, inc two times. (34)

FO on the first sole. Make a second sole for the same sandal, but do not fasten off. Hold both sole pieces together and sc through both layers around, placing 34 sc. FO and weave in ends.

Sandal Front Strap

Use orange yarn. Make 2.

  1. R1: ch 12.
  2. R2: sc in second ch from hook and across. (11)
  3. R3: ch 1, turn, sc across. (11)

FO, leaving a sewing tail. Place the strap across the toe area and sew both ends to the sole edges. The sage-gray toes should remain visible at the front, just like the picture.

Ankle Strap and Button

Use orange yarn. Make 2.

  1. R1: ch 16.
  2. R2: sc in second ch from hook and across. (15)

Sew the ankle strap around the back of each foot. Add a tiny wooden-style button or a small tan embroidered circle on the outer side of each sandal. Sew the sandals under the feet after the legs are attached.

Black Antennae

The antennae are tall, black, curved, and slightly uneven in a natural way. Floral wire inside the crochet cord helps the shape hold. For a child-safe version, skip the wire and use pipe-cleaner-style yarn only for display.

Use black yarn and a 2.00 mm hook. Make 2.

  1. R1: ch 31.
  2. R2: sl st in second ch from hook and in each ch across. (30)

FO, leaving a long tail. Insert thin black floral wire through the crochet cord if desired. Curl one end into a small hook. Sew the straight end to the top of the head between R5 and R7, about 7 stitches apart. Bend both antennae upward and outward.

Red Bow

The red bow sits beside one antenna on the upper right side of the head. It is small, bright, and slightly raised. Use red yarn and a 2.00 mm hook.

Bow Loops

  1. R1: ch 8.
  2. R2: sc in second ch from hook, sc across. (7)
  3. R3-R7: ch 1, turn, sc across. (7)

FO. Weave in the short end. Pinch the rectangle in the center to form two loops.

Bow Center

  1. R1: ch 5.
  2. R2: sc in second ch from hook, sc 3. (4)
  3. R3: ch 1, turn, sc 4. (4)

📌Thank you for reading the article

Wrap the center strip around the pinched bow and sew at the back. Sew the finished bow to the upper right side of the head, just below the antenna base. Tilt it slightly outward for the cheerful garden look.

Denim-Style Embroidered Jacket

The jacket is open-front, medium blue, with sleeves, folded collar, small buttons, and colorful floral embroidery. It should sit over the shoulders without closing. The stitch texture should look dense and handmade, similar to a tiny crocheted denim jacket.

Jacket Back Panel

Use denim blue yarn and a 2.25 mm hook. Work in rows.

  1. R1: ch 25, sc in second ch from hook and across. (24)
  2. R2-R8: ch 1, turn, sc across. (24)
  3. R9: ch 1, turn, dec, sc 20, dec. (22)
  4. R10-R15: ch 1, turn, sc across. (22)
  5. R16: ch 1, turn, sc 5, sl st 12, sc 5. (22)

FO. This creates a flat back with slight shoulder shaping. The sl st section at the top helps the neckline lie lower behind the ant’s neck.

Left Front Panel

Use denim blue yarn.

  1. R1: ch 13, sc in second ch from hook and across. (12)
  2. R2-R8: ch 1, turn, sc across. (12)
  3. R9: ch 1, turn, sc 10, dec. (11)
  4. R10-R12: ch 1, turn, sc across. (11)
  5. R13: ch 1, turn, sc 8, dec, sc 1. (10)
  6. R14-R15: ch 1, turn, sc across. (10)

FO. Leave a long tail for sewing. The shaped edge is the neckline side.

Right Front Panel

Use denim blue yarn. Repeat the left front panel, but mirror the shaping.

  1. R1: ch 13, sc in second ch from hook and across. (12)
  2. R2-R8: ch 1, turn, sc across. (12)
  3. R9: ch 1, turn, dec, sc 10. (11)
  4. R10-R12: ch 1, turn, sc across. (11)
  5. R13: ch 1, turn, sc 1, dec, sc 8. (10)
  6. R14-R15: ch 1, turn, sc across. (10)

FO, leaving a sewing tail. Sew the front panels to the back panel at the shoulders, matching the outer 5 stitches on each side. Leave the center neckline open.

Side Seams

Place the jacket around the body before sewing. Sew each side seam from the lower edge upward for 8 rows only. Leave the upper 7 rows open as armholes. The jacket should remain loose enough to slide over the arms.

Jacket Sleeves

Use denim blue yarn. Make 2. Work in continuous rounds.

  1. R1: ch 16, join to form a ring. (16)
  2. R2-R7: sc in each st around. (16)
  3. R8: sc 6, dec, sc 6, dec. (14)
  4. R9-R13: sc in each st around. (14)
  5. R14: sc 5, dec, sc 5, dec. (12)
  6. R15: sc around. (12)

FO, leaving a long tail. Sew one sleeve into each armhole. The sleeves should reach near the ant’s wrists, with the sage-gray hands hanging out below.

Jacket Collar

Attach denim blue yarn at the lower front edge of the right panel. Work up the front, around the back neckline, and down the left front edge.

  1. R1: evenly sc 44 around the front opening and neckline.
  2. R2: ch 1, turn, sc 8, hdc 6, dc 4, hdc 8, dc 4, hdc 6, sc 8. (44)

FO. Fold the collar slightly outward and tack it down at the shoulders. This gives the jacket the open, relaxed style visible in the image.

Jacket Cuffs and Hem

Attach denim blue yarn to the bottom hem and sc evenly across the lower jacket edge. FO. Attach yarn to each sleeve cuff and work one round of sl st around. These small edges make the jacket look finished and structured.

Jacket Buttons

Sew 4 small tan buttons along the left front opening. Place the first button just below the collar and the last button near the waist. The jacket stays open, so the buttons are decorative and do not need matching buttonholes.

Floral Embroidery on Jacket

The jacket in the image has tiny vines, leaves, berries, and flowers scattered across the front panels and sleeve cuffs. Use short embroidery stitches after the jacket is sewn but before final dressing, so you can work on a flat surface.

  • Green vines: stitch curved lines using backstitch on both front panels.
  • Leaves: make small lazy-daisy stitches in light green and dark green.
  • Red berries: make tiny French knots or small straight stitches.
  • White flowers: stitch 5 tiny petals around a yellow center.
  • Pink flowers: add 3 small straight stitches in clusters.
  • Sleeve cuffs: embroider one vine, two leaves, and one red berry on each cuff.

📌Thank you for reading the article

For the pictured look, place the densest embroidery on the lower front panels. Add a few small flowers near the chest and on the sleeve cuffs. Keep the back mostly plain so the doll does not look too crowded.

Brown Crossbody Garden Bag

The bag is small, rectangular, and hangs across the jacket from one shoulder to the opposite hip. It has a front flap and a little flower decoration. Use brown yarn and a 2.00 mm hook.

Bag Body

  1. R1: ch 13, sc in second ch from hook and across. (12)
  2. R2-R10: ch 1, turn, sc across. (12)

Make two identical rectangles. Hold them together and sc through both layers around three sides, leaving the top open. Work 12 sc across the bottom and 10 sc up each side. FO and weave in ends.

Bag Flap

  1. R1: ch 13, sc in second ch from hook and across. (12)
  2. R2-R5: ch 1, turn, sc across. (12)
  3. R6: ch 1, turn, dec, sc 8, dec. (10)
  4. R7: ch 1, turn, dec, sc 6, dec. (8)

FO, leaving a sewing tail. Sew the straight top edge of the flap to the back top edge of the bag. Fold it over the front.

Bag Flower

Use red yarn for petals and yellow yarn for the center.

  1. Center: with yellow, 6 sc in MR, sl st to join. FO.
  2. Petals: attach red to any st, ch 2, 2 dc in same st, ch 2, sl st in same st, repeat in each of the 6 center sts.

Sew the flower to the center of the bag flap. Add one tiny green straight stitch on each side of the flower for leaves.

Bag Strap

Use brown yarn.

  1. R1: ch 62.
  2. R2: sl st in second ch from hook and across. (61)

FO. Sew one end of the strap to each upper side of the bag. Place the strap over one shoulder and across the body. Tack the strap lightly to the jacket shoulder so the bag stays in the correct position.

Straw Sun Hat

The small straw hat sits beside the doll in the scene. It has a rounded crown, wide brim, green ribbon, and a bow. Use beige or straw yellow yarn and a 2.25 mm hook.

Hat Crown

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. (18)
  4. R4: sc 2, inc, repeat around. (24)
  5. R5: sc 3, inc, repeat around. (30)
  6. R6: BLO sc around. (30)
  7. R7-R12: sc around. (30)

Hat Brim

  1. R13: FLO sc 4, inc, repeat around. (36)
  2. R14: sc 5, inc, repeat around. (42)
  3. R15: sc 6, inc, repeat around. (48)
  4. R16: sc 7, inc, repeat around. (54)
  5. R17: sl st loosely around. (54)

FO and shape the brim flat. With green yarn, chain 42 and tie it around the base of the crown. Add two green bow tails on one side. Place the hat beside the doll or lightly tack it to the hand for display.

Tiny Strawberries

The photo includes bright red strawberries near the hat and watering can. Make three or four in different sizes for a natural garden accessory set.

Large Strawberry

Use red yarn and a 2.00 mm hook.

  1. R1: 5 sc in MR. (5)
  2. R2: inc around. (10)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. (15)
  4. R4-R6: sc around. (15)
  5. R7: sc 1, dec, repeat around. (10)
  6. R8: dec around. (5)

Stuff lightly, close, and FO. Embroider small white seed stitches across the berry. Use green yarn to make the top leaves: attach at the top, ch 4, sl st back down, repeat 5 times around.

Small Strawberry

  1. R1: 5 sc in MR. (5)
  2. R2: inc around. (10)
  3. R3-R4: sc around. (10)
  4. R5: dec around. (5)

Finish the same way as the large strawberry. Make at least two small strawberries so the accessory grouping looks balanced beside the ant doll.

Small Watering Can

The watering can is beige and sits behind the doll. It has a round body, open top, side handle, and long spout. Use beige yarn and a 2.00 mm hook.

Watering Can Body

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. (18)
  4. R4: sc 2, inc, repeat around. (24)
  5. R5: BLO sc around. (24)
  6. R6-R11: sc around. (24)
  7. R12: sc 2, dec, repeat around. (18)
  8. R13: BLO sc around. (18)
  9. R14: sc around. (18)

FO and leave the top open. Stuff lightly only at the bottom, or leave it hollow for a realistic container look. The open rim should remain visible.

Watering Can Spout

  1. R1: 5 sc in MR. (5)
  2. R2-R13: sc around. (5)

FO, leaving a sewing tail. Do not stuff. Sew one end to the upper side of the can at a slight upward angle. Flatten the outer tip and shape it gently with your fingers.

Watering Can Handle

  1. R1: ch 22.
  2. R2: sl st in second ch from hook and across. (21)

Sew one end near the top back side of the can and the other end near the lower back side. Curve the handle outward before securing. This creates the small garden prop seen behind the doll.

Dressing the Doll

Put the shorts on first, then sew or position the legs through the leg openings. Add the jacket over the shoulders and arms. The jacket front should remain open so the body and shorts are visible. The sleeves should cover the upper arms but not the hands.

  1. Slide the shorts onto the lower body and position the waistband evenly.
  2. Sew the legs firmly under the shorts so they hang over the bench edge.
  3. Place the jacket on the body and pull the arms through the sleeves.
  4. Tack the jacket at the back neckline, shoulders, and lower side seams.
  5. Place the bag strap across the body from shoulder to opposite hip.
  6. Add sandals after the doll is seated so the feet face forward naturally.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Sew the head and neck securely to the body using several rounds of stitches. The head is large, so reinforce the join by sewing through the neck, body, and bottom of the head at least twice. Keep the face turned slightly upward.

  • Sew the orange snout centered between the eyes and mouth.
  • Sew the red mouth insert beneath the snout.
  • Add the sage lower lip along the bottom edge of the mouth.
  • Attach the eyes high on the face, about 5 stitches apart.
  • Add yellow eyelids above the eyes.
  • Sew the antennae on top of the head and curve them outward.
  • Sew the red bow beside the right antenna.

Use black embroidery yarn to add a few short lashes at the outer corners of each eye. Add a small curved smile line at each side of the red mouth if needed. Keep the details light so the ant remains sweet and expressive.

Care Notes

This doll has many small decorative parts, including antennae, buttons, embroidery, bag, sandals, strawberries, and a watering can. It is best used as a decorative handmade item rather than a rough-play toy, especially if wire, buttons, or safety eyes are used.

  • Spot clean with a soft damp cloth.
  • Do not machine wash if the antennae contain wire.
  • Keep away from pets that may chew small parts.
  • Store the accessories in a small pouch when not displayed.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, full, and tilted slightly forward.
  • The orange snout is centered above the open red mouth.
  • The eyes are large, bright, and placed high on the face.
  • The antennae stand tall and curve outward.
  • The red bow sits near one antenna.
  • The blue jacket stays open and shows the body and shorts.
  • The jacket has flowers, vines, berries, buttons, collar, sleeves, and cuffs.
  • The brown bag crosses the body and hangs near the hip.
  • The long legs bend naturally in a seated pose.
  • The orange sandals show the sage-gray toes at the front.
  • The straw hat, strawberries, and watering can complete the garden scene.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, dust the doll gently with a clean dry brush every few weeks. If the doll becomes flattened, reshape the head, body, and limbs by hand. Avoid pulling the antennae, bow, jacket embroidery, or bag strap.

For small stains, dab the area with cool water and mild soap. Do not rub the embroidered jacket, because tiny stitches can loosen. Press with a towel and air dry flat. Keep the doll away from direct sunlight to protect the red, blue, and green yarn colors.

When storing, wrap the doll loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Store the hat, strawberries, and watering can beside the doll rather than pressing them under it. This keeps the accessories neat and helps the seated ant garden doll stay display-ready.
