Crochet Tutorial: Badger Pumpkin Potting Shed Garden – Free Crochet Pattern.

This cozy crochet garden scene features two tiny badger amigurumi helpers, an open-front pumpkin potting shed, a textured orange roof, pumpkins, soil sacks, seed packets, flowerpots, a wheelbarrow, mushrooms, fences, fallen leaves, a yarn ball, and a soft rounded grass base. The finished piece is designed as a detailed seasonal diorama with many small handmade garden accessories.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

Using the yarn and hook suggested below, the finished garden base measures about 12.5 inches wide and 10 inches deep. The shed stands about 7 inches tall to the roof peak, and each badger measures about 3.5 inches tall when seated or slightly crouched.

This pattern uses tight amigurumi-style crochet. Work firmly, but do not pull so tightly that the panels curl. The shed should look soft and handmade, while still holding its little cottage shape.

Skill Level

Intermediate. A confident beginner can make the smaller pieces, but the shed, roof, and assembly require careful counting, sewing, shaping, and patience. Read each section before starting so the pieces match neatly.

Materials

  • Sport or DK weight cotton yarn in grass green, dark brown, medium brown, taupe, beige, rust orange, pumpkin orange, cream, white, black, charcoal gray, light gray, moss green, yellow, blue, and small amounts of red and tan.
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook for amigurumi pieces.
  • 2.75 mm crochet hook for base and shed panels.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Cardboard, plastic canvas, or felt sheet for base and shed support.
  • Two 6 mm safety eyes for each badger, or black yarn embroidery if preferred.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Straight pins for positioning.
  • Small amount of blush pink yarn or embroidery thread for cheek dots if desired.
  • Optional: pipe cleaners or craft wire for the wheelbarrow handles, fence posts, and badger arms.

Abbreviations Used

  • MR = magic ring
  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • inc = 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec = invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO = back loop only
  • FLO = front loop only
  • FO = fasten off
  • st = stitch
  • R = round or row

Gauge and Notes

Gauge is not essential, but tight stitches are important. For amigurumi parts, 6 sc across should measure about 1 inch with the 2.25 mm hook. For flat shed panels, 5 sc across should measure about 1 inch with the 2.75 mm hook.

Work most small pieces in continuous rounds unless a section says to work in rows. Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round. Stuff firmly for pumpkins and badger heads, lightly for arms and tails, and almost not at all for flat decorations.

For a neat photo-ready finish, hide all yarn tails inside the project or use them for sewing. The diorama looks best when the pieces are sewn down securely so the shed, pumpkins, and accessories stay upright.

Color Placement Guide

  • Base: grass green with darker green surface texture.
  • Shed walls: taupe and medium brown, with darker brown trim lines.
  • Roof: rust orange with raised shingle ridges.
  • Badgers: gray bodies, white faces, black face stripes, black paws, and tiny dark tails.
  • Pumpkins: orange and cream with green stems.
  • Garden details: brown soil, beige sacks, tan signs, green sprouts, red-orange mushrooms, and yellow leaves.

Rounded Grass Base

The image shows a thick rounded rectangular grass mat. This base supports the entire scene, so make it firm and flat. Use grass green yarn and the 2.75 mm hook.

Placement Map

Before sewing the final scene, arrange every piece on the grass base. The shed belongs at the back center. The left badger sits in front of the sign and pumpkins. The right badger stands beside the seed table. The wheelbarrow sits front right, while cream pumpkins sit near the front center.

  • Back center: potting shed with open doorway.
  • Roof right side: chimney.
  • Inside shed: shelf, pots, seed packets, small pumpkins.
  • Left front of shed: pumpkin shed sign.
  • Left garden edge: stacked terracotta pots and fence.
  • Left center: sitting badger with carrot and pumpkins.
  • Right side: seed table, soil bags, hanging seed pocket, and standing badger.
  • Front right: wheelbarrow filled with pumpkins and trowel.
  • Front center: cream striped pumpkins and autumn leaves.
  • Front left: yarn ball and mushrooms.

Detailed Assembly Order

  1. Sew the shed floor to the grass base first. Keep it centered and straight.
  2. Sew the back and side walls to the shed floor if you have not already done so.
  3. Add the front posts and make sure the open doorway remains wide enough to show the shelf and pots.
  4. Sew the roof to the shed, catching the gable edges and upper wall edges securely.
  5. Sew the chimney to the right roof slope.
  6. Add the interior shelf, pots, seed packets, and small pumpkins before the doorway becomes crowded.
  7. Sew the seed hanging bag to the right front post.
  8. Sew the PUMPKIN SHED sign near the left doorway.
  9. Sew the soil bags near the open front and right wall.
  10. Sew the seed table on the right side, then add packets to the tabletop.
  11. Sew fence panels around the garden edges, leaving room for badgers and pumpkins.
  12. Sew the wheelbarrow to the front right and fill it with pumpkins.
  13. Sew pumpkins in clusters near the left badger and front center.
  14. Sew the left badger in a crouching position near the pumpkin patch.
  15. Sew the right badger beside the seed table, with one paw holding the tag.
  16. Add mushrooms, leaves, carrots, the yarn ball, and any remaining tiny pots last.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Use pins before sewing the badger heads, arms, and legs. Small changes in angle will change the character expression. Tilt the left badger’s head toward the pumpkin patch and angle the right badger toward the seed table for a storytelling effect.

Embroider noses with black yarn using short satin stitches. Add one vertical mouth stitch under each nose. For the badger stripes, sew the black strips smoothly against the white face so they do not wrinkle. Add tiny white eye highlights only after the head is fully assembled.

Check the shed from the front and both sides. If it leans, add a few hidden stitches from the wall base into the grass panel. If the roof lifts at the corners, secure each corner with two small stitches in rust orange yarn.

Care Notes

This crochet diorama is best used as a decorative piece. Because it includes many small parts, it is not recommended as a toy for babies or young children. Keep it away from pets, moisture, and direct sunlight for long periods.

Spot clean only. Use a slightly damp cloth and gently dab the surface. Do not soak the shed or base, especially if you used cardboard inside. Let the piece air dry completely before storing.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • All shed walls stand straight and the roof is firmly attached.
  • The chimney is upright when viewed from the front.
  • Both badgers have matching face stripes, noses, ears, arms, legs, and tails.
  • The PUMPKIN SHED sign is readable and securely attached.
  • Pumpkins have clear grooves and green stems.
  • Seed packets, soil sacks, pots, table, fence, mushrooms, leaves, yarn ball, and wheelbarrow are sewn down.
  • No loose yarn tails are visible on the front or sides.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, lift the finished diorama from the base with both hands. Do not pull it by the shed, roof, badgers, fence, or wheelbarrow. The small details are decorative and should not carry the weight of the project.

For dust removal, use a soft clean makeup brush or a small handheld air blower on a low setting. Brush in the direction of the stitches. Avoid strong vacuum suction because it can pull on small leaves, signs, and seed packets.

Store the garden scene in a dry box with tissue paper around the roof and figures. Do not stack heavy items on top. If the pumpkins or badgers become slightly flattened, gently reshape them with your fingers and allow them to rest upright.
