Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms. The project is made as a decorative amigurumi diorama, worked in separate pieces and sewn together. The finished scene is approximately 13 inches wide and 8.5 inches tall when made with sport or light worsted cotton yarn and a 2.25 mm crochet hook.

The cottage is built with firm flat panels so it can stand upright on the round grass base. The roof uses front-loop texture rows to copy the ridged green roof in the image. The beavers are small seated figures with rounded heads, cream muzzles, brown bodies, little ears, arms, feet, and embroidered facial details.

Materials

  • Yarn weight: Sport weight cotton or light worsted cotton.
  • Hook: 2.25 mm for amigurumi and small details; 2.75 mm for the round base if you crochet tightly.
  • Fiberfill: For beavers, trees, mailbox post, basket, and small accessories.
  • Plastic canvas or cardboard: For cottage walls, roof support, and base stability.
  • Safety eyes: 5 mm black eyes for the beavers, or embroider eyes with black thread.
  • Tapestry needle: For sewing and weaving ends.
  • Embroidery thread: Black, white, pink, red, green, yellow, blue, and brown.
  • Optional: Stitch markers, pins, fabric glue for tiny flower placement, and thin wire for clothesline posts.

Yarn Colors

  • Grass green: round base and garden grass.
  • Cream: cottage walls, beaver muzzle and belly, envelopes.
  • Olive green: roof, roof edging, leafy herbs.
  • Red: cottage door, mailbox flag, small flower accents.
  • Warm brown: beavers, fence, tree trunks, mailbox, bag, table legs.
  • Dark brown: fence tips, mailbox shading, beaver arms and tails.
  • Gray: stepping stones.
  • Tan: table top, basket, chimney.
  • Flower colors: pink, blue, yellow, purple, white, and red.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • FO: fasten off
  • st or sts: stitch or stitches
  • R: round or row

Gauge and Size Notes

Gauge is not critical, but tight stitches are important. For amigurumi parts, stuffing should not show through the stitches. With a 2.25 mm hook, 8 sc by 8 rounds should measure about 1 inch square. If your work is loose, go down one hook size.

The cottage in the image has a short rectangular body with a steep roof. The roof is wider than the house body and overhangs on all sides. The garden mat is large and circular, with the cottage placed slightly toward the back so the path, mailbox, beavers, table, and basket can sit in front.

Important Construction Notes

  • Work most small amigurumi pieces in continuous spiral rounds unless a row is specified.
  • Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of every round.
  • Stuff firmly but do not overstuff flat pieces.
  • Pin all pieces onto the base before sewing permanently.
  • For the cleanest display, hide yarn tails inside the cottage or under the grass base.

Round Grass Base

The base should look like a thick, soft green crochet lawn. Work it as a large circle, then add one round of textured grass stitches around the top and a firm edging around the side.

Base Circle

Use grass green yarn and a 2.75 mm hook if needed. Work in joined rounds for a flatter circle.

  • Attach the second side wall, then the back wall, forming a box.
  • Keep the bottom open so the cottage can sit flat on the grass base.
  • Stuff lightly inside with fiberfill only if needed to keep the walls from bowing.

  4. FO, leave tail.

Embroider diagonal lines across each tail with slightly lighter brown thread. Sew the tail to the back lower body. For the seated beaver, let the tail rest flat on the grass behind the body.

Cheeks and Face Details

  • Use pink thread to stitch one small cheek under each eye.
  • Use black thread for two short eyelashes on the seated beaver if desired.
  • Use white thread to add tiny highlight stitches beside the eyes.
  • Use brown thread to embroider short forehead marks on each beaver, matching the soft woodland look.

Beaver Shoulder Bag

The standing beaver has a small brown satchel at its side.

Bag Body

  1. With dark brown yarn, ch 8, sc in second ch from hook and across. 7 sts.
  2. Rows 2-6: ch 1, turn, sc across. 7 sts.
  3. Row 7: ch 1, turn, BLO sc across. 7 sts.

Bag Strap

  1. With dark brown yarn, ch 32.
  2. Sl st in each ch across.
  3. FO.

Sew the strap over the standing beaver’s shoulder, then sew the bag to its left hip.

Herb and Flower Sprigs Near Cottage Wall

Small flowers grow at the base of the cottage, especially under the window and near the door.

  • Use green embroidery thread to stitch 8 to 12 vertical stems along the cottage wall.
  • For each flower, join yarn at top of stem, ch 2, sl st in same place, repeat 3 times.
  • Use blue, yellow, pink, and red flowers to match the bright garden details.
  • Add two tiny green leaves beside several stems with lazy daisy stitches or small chain stitches.

Small Herb Signs and Garden Notes

Place two little paper-like note cards on the table and two on the grass. These copy the garden letters and herb labels in the scene.

  1. With cream yarn, ch 7, sc in second ch from hook and across. 6 sts.
  2. Rows 2-3: ch 1, turn, sc across. 6 sts.
  3. FO. Make 4.

Embroider two short gray lines on each note. Add one red heart, tiny green leaf, or pink flower in the corner.

Optional Mini Watermill Accent

The title includes a watermill herb farm cottage. The reference scene focuses on the cottage garden, but you can add a small decorative wheel beside the left cottage wall to suggest a tiny watermill detail without changing the main layout.

Watermill Wheel

  1. With medium brown yarn, MR, 8 sc in ring. 8 sts.
  2. R2: ch 3, sl st in next st, repeat around to make 8 spokes.
  3. FO.

Sew the wheel to the lower left side wall of the cottage or place it near the side fence. Keep it small so the mailbox, beavers, and flower cottage remain the focus.

Final Layout Placement

Before sewing, arrange every piece on the green base. The cottage should sit toward the back center, leaving the front half open for the path, mailbox, beavers, table, letters, and basket.

  1. Place the cottage at the back center of the base. Pin it firmly.
  2. Lay the stepping stones from the red door toward the front-right edge.
  3. Set the mailbox slightly left of the path, close enough for the standing beaver to reach.
  4. Place the standing beaver left of the mailbox with arms forward.
  5. Place the seated beaver on the right side, facing the table.
  6. Set the round table in front of the seated beaver.
  7. Place the flower basket near the right side of the path.
  8. Place trees behind and beside the cottage.
  9. Place the fence around the back and sides, leaving a front opening.
  10. Attach clothesline posts on the left front side of the garden.

Sewing the Cottage to the Base

Use cream yarn and a long needle. Sew around the lower edge of the cottage walls, catching both the cottage bottom and the green base stitches. Keep stitches small and hidden. Add extra stitches at the four corners so the cottage stands straight.

If the roof makes the cottage top-heavy, sew through the inside bottom of the cottage and into the grass base several times. This anchors the structure without visible stitches.

Sewing the Beavers

Attach each beaver securely. For the standing beaver, sew both feet and the lower tail to the base. Add one hidden stitch from the side body into the mailbox post if you want the figure to stand firmly.

For the seated beaver, sew the lower body, legs, and tail to the base. Angle the head slightly downward toward the table so it looks like the beaver is reading or sorting garden notes.

Adding Tiny Flowers and Surface Details

After the main pieces are attached, add the smallest flowers last. This keeps them from being crushed during sewing. Place flowers around the roof eave, under the window, in the basket, near the table, and along the front grass.

  • Use blue and yellow flowers near the cottage wall.
  • Use pink and purple flowers in the basket.
  • Use red flowers on the clothesline cloths and envelope stamps.
  • Use white and pale blue flowers along the roof lip.

Finishing the Fence and Clothesline

When the garden objects are fixed, sew the fence posts down with several stitches through the base. The fence should not be perfectly straight. A slightly uneven curve gives the handmade farmyard look shown in the image.

For the clothesline, secure the line tightly between the posts. Sew each tiny cloth over the line with two tan stitches so the pieces look clipped in place. Do not use heavy glue because it can stiffen the delicate yarn.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  • Sew all loose pieces firmly and check that the cottage, trees, mailbox, and beavers stand upright.
  • Embroider the beaver noses with black thread and add one small vertical mouth line.
  • Add two tiny white tooth stitches to each beaver muzzle.
  • Add pink cheek stitches and small brown forehead marks.
  • Check that the standing beaver’s letter is sewn between both paws.
  • Check that the seated beaver faces the table and basket.

Care Notes

This crochet cottage scene is decorative and includes many small parts. It is not recommended as a toy for children under three years old. Keep it away from pets, moisture, and direct sunlight to protect the colors and shape.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Cottage body is straight and firmly attached.
  • Roof overhang is even on both sides.
  • Red door and window are centered and neat.
  • Flower garland covers the front roof edge.
  • Path curves naturally from door to front garden.
  • Mailbox stands close to the left beaver.
  • Table, basket, notes, and flowers are secured.
  • Fence curves around the back and side edges.
  • Trees and birds are balanced behind the cottage.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Clean the finished piece by dusting gently with a soft brush. For small marks, dab lightly with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not soak the cottage, because the inner supports may bend or weaken.

Store the diorama in a dry display box when not in use. If the roof or fence becomes flattened, reshape it gently with your fingers and allow it to rest upright. Keep the flower garland and tiny letters protected from pulling.
