Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms. The doll is worked mostly in the round on double-pointed needles or magic loop. Small pieces are knitted flat when that gives a cleaner shape, especially the ears, sandal straps, bag strap, flower petals, and overall straps.

The finished piglet is built from firm stuffed pieces with visible knitted texture, just like the image. The head is larger than the body, the snout is raised and centered, the ears sit high and slightly out to the sides, and the outfit is layered so the sweater sleeves show under the green overalls.

  • Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Finished seated height: About 10.5 in / 27 cm from top of head to sandal soles.
  • Finished standing length before posing: About 13 in / 33 cm.
  • Main construction: Knitted in the round, stuffed firmly, then assembled.
  • Recommended use: Decorative doll, keepsake, nursery shelf display, handmade gift.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn, blush piglet pink: 55 g for head, legs, feet, and face.
  • DK weight yarn, slightly darker pink: 8 g for snout center and inner ears.
  • DK weight yarn, blue denim: 25 g for sweater, sleeves, hat, and watering can.
  • DK weight yarn, cream: 10 g for sweater colorwork, hat stripes, sandal flowers, and bag stripes.
  • DK weight yarn, sage green: 35 g for overalls and pants.
  • DK weight yarn, carrot orange: Small amount for carrot embroidery.
  • DK weight yarn, leaf green: Small amount for carrot tops, flower stem, and leaves.
  • DK weight yarn, warm brown: 15 g for sandals, hands, pot soil, and flower pot detail.
  • DK weight yarn, terracotta: 10 g for flower pot.
  • DK weight yarn, muted red or plum: Small amount for flower petals.
  • DK weight yarn, pale yellow: Small amount for flower center.
  • Small black yarn or embroidery floss: For eyes and brows.
  • 2 small wooden buttons: About 6 mm for overall bib.
  • 2.75 mm double-pointed needles or long circular needle: For doll pieces.
  • 3.0 mm needles: For looser clothing pieces if needed.
  • Tapestry needle: For seaming and embroidery.
  • Locking stitch markers: For shaping and placement.
  • Fiberfill stuffing: Firm, smooth stuffing is best.
  • Optional pipe cleaner or craft wire: For flower stem and watering can spout only, not for young children.

Gauge

Use a tight gauge so stuffing does not show through. On 2.75 mm needles in stockinette worked in the round, aim for 28 stitches and 38 rounds = 4 in / 10 cm. Gauge is more important for neat fabric than for exact size. If your fabric looks loose, use smaller needles.

  • BO: Bind off.
  • CO: Cast on.

  • kfb: Knit into front and back of the same stitch.

Important Shaping Notes

Stuff each piece gradually as you knit or immediately after finishing. The head should be round and full, the snout should sit forward like a soft oval pad, and the body should be narrower than the head. The legs are long enough to hang over the table edge, matching the seated look in the photo.

When sewing pieces together, use mattress stitch for neat seams and long, firm stitches through the stuffing to anchor limbs securely. Pull gently, not tightly, so the doll keeps a soft handmade shape.

Work the head in blush piglet pink. The head is a rounded ball with a slightly longer lower face. Work in the round and stuff firmly before closing.

Lightly stuff the snout before the final stitches are sewn down. Place the snout across the center front of the head, about 5 rounds below the eye position. Sew around the oval edge. With brown-pink yarn, embroider 5 vertical bars across the snout: one in the center, two on each side, each about 4 rows high.

Ears

The ears are round, folded piglet ears with a darker inner section. Knit two outer ears in blush pink and two inner ears in darker pink. The folded shape is created during assembly.

Body

The body is smaller than the head and will be mostly covered by the sweater and overalls. Carrot Embroidery on Bib

Use orange yarn to embroider three carrots across the bib. Each carrot is a small tapered satin-stitch shape about 5 rows tall. Place one carrot in the center and one on each side.

  • For each carrot, make 3 orange vertical stitches at the top, 2 slightly shorter stitches below, and 1 short stitch at the bottom point.
  • With leaf green, add two tiny straight stitches at the top of each carrot.
  • Keep the embroidery flat so it looks like small garden patches on the bib.

Sew the flower head to the top of the stem. The finished flower should sit slightly taller than the watering can.

Facial Embroidery

The face gives the piglet its gentle expression. Place the eyes symmetrically, low enough to leave a wide forehead, and angle the brows upward at the center for a sweet shy look.

  • Eyes: With black yarn, embroider two small vertical oval eyes between head Rnds 24 and 26, about 12 sts apart. Each eye is 3 stitches tall.
  • Eye highlights: Add one tiny cream stitch at the upper outer side of each black eye if desired.
  • Brows: With black yarn, embroider one curved brow above each eye, about 4 sts long. Angle each brow slightly upward toward the center.
  • Snout ridges: Use darker brown-pink vertical stitches on the snout, evenly spaced.
  • Cheek shaping: Run a long strand from the back of the head to one cheek, take a tiny stitch near the snout side, return to the back, and pull gently. Repeat on the other side.

Joining the Doll

Before final sewing, dress the body in the sweater and overalls. Add legs inside the pants so the pink lower legs extend below the green cuffs. The head should sit directly above the sweater neck, with the snout facing forward and the ears evenly balanced.

  1. Sew the legs to the lower body first, spacing them slightly apart so the doll can sit.
  2. Pull the green pant legs down over the upper legs and arrange the cuffs above the pink ankles.
  3. Sew the arms to the upper sides of the body over the sweater, angled downward.
  4. Place the head on the body and pin it in place. Sew around the neck twice with strong stitches.
  5. Attach the overall bib and straps if not already attached.
  6. Add the buttons to the bib corners and secure the straps over them.
  7. Place the crossbody bag strap over the shoulder and tack it with two hidden stitches.
  8. Set the hat beside the doll or place it loosely on the head for a display option.
  9. Arrange the watering can and flower pot near the doll for the full garden-helper scene.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check that the snout is centered, the ears are level, and the eyes sit evenly above the snout. Add the brow stitches last because a small change in angle can make the piglet look happier, sleepier, or more curious. For the pictured soft expression, keep the brows thin and slightly curved.

Steam-block only the clothing pieces very lightly if needed. Do not press the stuffed head or body flat. Use your fingers to round the cheeks, lift the snout, and smooth the stuffing into an even shape.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if buttons, embroidery, or wired accessories are included.
  • Let the doll air dry fully before storing.
  • Keep the doll away from strong direct sunlight to protect the soft pastel colors.
  • If making for a young child, replace buttons with embroidered circles and omit all wire.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, firm, and larger than the body.
  • The snout is raised, oval, pink, and centered.
  • The folded ears sit high and angle outward.
  • The blue sweater shows cream fair-isle detail above the bib.
  • The green overalls have a front bib, crossed straps, buttons, cuffs, and three carrot motifs.
  • The sandals have brown soles, toe bands, ankle straps, and tiny flower accents.
  • The striped bag crosses from shoulder to hip.
  • The hat, watering can, and potted flower match the garden-helper theme.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For long-term display, dust the doll gently with a soft dry cloth every few weeks. If the bag, hat, or accessories gather dust, remove them if possible and clean each piece separately. Avoid soaking the doll because dense stuffing can take a long time to dry.

Store the piglet in a breathable cotton bag or open display box. Do not compress the ears, snout, hat pom-pom, or flower stem. If the doll loses shape over time, gently massage the stuffing back into place and refresh the embroidered details with a tapestry needle.
