Finished Size
- Open suitcase: about 12 in wide, 9 in deep, and 8.5 in tall when the lid stands upright.
- Bear: about 4.75 in tall seated, 6 in tall before sitting.
- Rocking chair: about 4 in tall, sized to hold the bear snugly.
- Table: about 2.75 in wide and 2 in tall.
- Scale: miniature amigurumi display, made with firm stitches and light stuffing.
Skill Level
Intermediate. A confident beginner can make this project by working slowly. The main skills are crocheting in continuous rounds, flat rows, simple shaping, seaming, surface crochet, embroidery, and joining small pieces neatly.
Materials
- Sport weight cotton yarn or fine DK cotton yarn in oatmeal, cream, warm tan, caramel brown, dark brown, rust red, pale blue, soft yellow, white, green, lavender, pink, purple, terracotta, teal, and black.
- 2.25 mm crochet hook for the suitcase, bear, furniture, and accessories.
- 2.00 mm crochet hook for tiny flowers, glasses, cookies, and facial details.
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- Plastic canvas, thin cardboard, or craft foam for stabilizing suitcase base, lid, table, sign, and window.
- Yarn needle, sewing pins, stitch markers, scissors.
- Two 5 mm black safety eyes for the bear, or black embroidery thread.
- Small amount of white felt or white crochet thread for lace curtain accents if desired.
- Optional warm yellow embroidery floss for stitched wall lights.
- Optional battery-operated micro LED string for adult display only. Do not use electronics if the item is intended for children.
Yarn Colors Used in the Pictured Design
- Oatmeal beige: suitcase interior walls, bear body, sofa cushion, rug base.
- Caramel brown: suitcase stripes, outer trim, handle, window frames, chair, railings.
- Cream: inner border, curtains, slippers, table top.
- Rust red: bear scarf.
- Pale blue and soft yellow: striped floor rug.
- Green: leaves, plant stems, porch vines.
- Lavender, purple, pink, white, yellow: flowers and potted plants.

Abbreviations in US Crochet Terms
- MR: magic ring
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- tr: treble crochet
- inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
- dec: invisible single crochet decrease
- BLO: back loop only
- FLO: front loop only
- FO: fasten off
- st/sts: stitch/stitches
- RS: right side
- WS: wrong side
Gauge
With the 2.25 mm hook and sport weight cotton, 8 sc and 8 rows should measure about 1 inch. Gauge is important because the bear, chair, table, and porch all need to fit inside the suitcase. If your stitches are loose, use a smaller hook. If your suitcase becomes too stiff to fold, use slightly lighter yarn for the lid and base.
Construction Notes
- Work amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
- Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of every round.
- Stuff the bear firmly but do not overstuff the limbs, because the seated pose needs soft joints.
- The suitcase is made as a rectangular tray and upright lid. Both are stabilized with plastic canvas or cardboard.
- The porch details are sewn after the suitcase is assembled, so you can position every accessory like the photo.
- For a display piece, sew everything down securely. For a play set, leave the bear, slippers, books, and cup removable.

Main Suitcase Base
The suitcase base is a shallow rectangular tray with rounded corners, caramel stripes outside, cream inner walls, and a thick brown rim. Work tightly so the walls stand upright.
Base Floor Panel

- Ch 46.
- Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. 45 sts.
- Rows 2-58: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. 45 sts.
- Do not FO. Continue around the rectangle for the border.

- Sew through both layers several times at the left and right back corners.
- For a stronger hinge, crochet a chain of 42 in caramel brown and sew it across the back joint like a soft hinge cord.
- The lid should stand at about a 95-degree angle, slightly leaning backward like an open suitcase porch scene.

Assembly Order
- Make the suitcase base and lid first. Stabilize both pieces before adding decorations.
- Attach the lid to the base at a firm upright angle.
- Sew the striped rug to the base floor.
- Add the cream cushion and sun pillows to the left back corner.
- Sew the window, shutters, curtains, sign, hanging basket, and wall lights to the lid.
- Make the porch railing and attach it to the right side of the base.
- Make the rocking chair and sew it near the railing.
- Make the bear, scarf, and book. Seat the bear in the chair and secure it with hidden stitches.
- Make the table and sew it in front of the bear.
- Add lemonade, cookies, book stack, and vase to the table.
- Add the lavender pot, watering can, bird, slippers, glasses, yarn basket, and scattered leaves.
- Add the handle, latch, knobs, front stripes, and top clasp last.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check the bear’s face before final sewing. The eyes should sit evenly, the muzzle should be centered, and the nose should point toward the open book. Add a tiny blush effect with pale pink yarn by making one short stitch under each eye. Do not overdo the face because the pictured bear has a calm, simple expression.
Sit the bear in the rocking chair and pin the arms around the book. Sew the back of the bear lightly to the chair back, then sew the lower body to the seat. This keeps the reading pose stable while still looking soft and natural.
Make sure the table is close enough for the bear to look engaged with the cozy porch setting. The lemonade, cookies, flowers, and stacked books should be placed in a balanced cluster, with the vase toward the back and the food closer to the viewer.
Care Notes
- Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if cardboard, plastic canvas, glue, or optional lights are used.
- Let the piece air dry completely before storing.
- Keep the display away from direct sunlight to protect the soft yarn colors.
- If made for children, remove any electronics, wires, small loose parts, and safety eyes.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The suitcase base sits flat and the lid stands upright.
- The handle is centered on the front wall.
- The bear sits securely in the rocking chair.
- The scarf knot is sewn in place.
- The window shutters angle outward evenly.
- The Sunday Porch sign is straight and readable.
- The table accessories are firmly attached.
- The railing posts are evenly spaced.
- The tiny leaves, slippers, glasses, and yarn basket are placed naturally.
- All yarn tails are woven in or hidden inside pieces.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
For long-term display, dust the suitcase gently with a soft makeup brush or clean paintbrush. Brush from the top of the lid downward so dust does not settle into the window frame, flower basket, and railing.
If a small stain appears, dampen a white cloth with cool water and press lightly. Avoid rubbing the stitches because small crochet pieces can stretch. Let the area dry flat in a shaded place.
Store the porch suitcase in a breathable cotton bag or a clean box with tissue paper around the bear, chair, and railing. Do not place heavy items on top of the lid or handle. Keep the flowers and tiny accessories from being crushed.
If the item includes optional battery lights, remove batteries before storage. Never leave lights switched on unattended. For a child-safe version, use only crocheted yellow light dots and embroidered halos.
