Pattern Overview

This pattern is worked mainly in small pieces, then stuffed and sewn together. The body, head, legs, arms, muzzle, ears, hat, clothing details, backpack, sandals, and flower pocket are made separately so the final doll has the layered handmade look shown in the image.

The sample size is about 11.5 inches tall from the top of the yellow hat to the bottom of the sandals. Use firm stuffing and tight tension so the doll keeps a soft rounded shape without large gaps between stitches.

  • Skill level: Advanced beginner to intermediate.
  • Finished height: About 11.5 inches tall.
  • Main construction: Knitted flat and in the round, then seamed.
  • Recommended needle size: US 3 or US 4, depending on your tension.
  • Best yarn weight: DK weight yarn.
  • Gauge: About 6 stitches and 8 rows per inch in stockinette stitch.

Important Knitting Notes

Work firmly but not so tightly that the pieces become stiff. The original look has visible knit texture, rounded stuffed forms, and slightly plush edges. When seaming, use mattress stitch where possible and keep the seams toward the back or underside of each piece.

The face is built in layers. The dark brown head forms the base, the tan muzzle is sewn on the front, and the eyes sit above the muzzle. This gives the monkey a cute, wide-eyed garden doll expression.

  • Stuff the head firmly, especially around the cheeks and upper face.
  • Stuff arms and legs lightly so they hang naturally.
  • Stuff the body more firmly at the belly to create the rounded overall shape.
  • Keep all color joins at the back of the doll whenever possible.
  • Use small stitches when sewing accessories so they do not twist or sag.

Main Body and Overall Base

The body is knitted from the bottom upward in warm medium brown, matching the overall color in the image. It has a softly rounded belly, narrow neck, and two separated leg openings at the lower front.

Leg Opening Shaping

The legs sit under the overall body, with the overalls forming short pants. The lower body should show two small brown overall cuffs, just like the rolled hem above the dark legs in the photo.

  1. Turn the body upside down. Identify the original CO edge.
  2. Flatten the body so the front is centered. Mark 8 front center sts for the crotch area.
  3. Using warm medium brown yarn, pick up 14 sts around the left lower opening.
  4. Work 4 rounds in garter texture: Rnd 1 K, Rnd 2 P, Rnd 3 K, Rnd 4 P.
  5. BO loosely. This forms the left rolled overall cuff.
  6. Repeat around the right lower opening with 14 picked-up sts.
  7. Use the yarn tail to close any small gap between the two leg openings, leaving space for the dark brown legs to sit underneath.

  • Pull gently to indent the toe lines, but do not pull so tightly that the foot becomes pointed.

Head

The monkey head is a rounded dark brown oval with a wider cheek area and a slightly narrower crown hidden under the yellow sunhat. The tan muzzle is attached separately so the face projects forward.

Muzzle Shaping and Nose Line

  • Place the muzzle on the front of the head between rounds 14 and 25 of the head.
  • Stuff lightly before closing the final lower edge.
  • Sew the top edge first, then the sides, then the lower curve.
  • With dark brown yarn, embroider a small vertical line down the center from the top of the muzzle.
  • Add two short diagonal stitches at the top to form a soft V-shaped monkey nose.
  • Add a shallow curved smile line across the lower third of the muzzle.

Eyes

The eyes in the image are large, bright, and close together. Use white safety eyes or sew-on googly-style eyes for the same playful expression. For a child-safe version, knit white eye circles and embroider black pupils instead.

  1. Position the eyes directly above the muzzle, centered on the front of the head.
  2. Place the inner edges about 1 stitch apart.
  3. The bottom of each eye should touch or nearly touch the top edge of the muzzle.
  4. Secure tightly from inside if using safety eyes before the head is fully closed.
  5. If attaching after stuffing, sew around each eye edge with matching white thread or strong yarn.

Round Monkey Ears

  10. Cut yarn, pull through remaining stitches, and flatten into a rounded ear.

Ear Placement

  • Place each ear at the side of the head between rounds 15 and 23.
  • The center of each ear should line up with the center of the muzzle height.
  • Sew the ears with a slight forward tilt so they are visible from the front.
  • Keep the lower edge rounded and the top edge tucked slightly under the hat brim.

Striped Garden Shirt

The shirt is knitted as a short-sleeved green-and-white striped layer under the overalls. It shows at the neck, shoulders, and sleeves. The stripes should be narrow and even.

  • Insert the top of each arm inside a striped sleeve before sewing the sleeve to the body.
  • Angle the arms downward from the shoulders, matching the relaxed pose in the image.

The overalls are already formed by the brown body, but the front bib is added separately for a raised garment look. The bib should sit on the belly and cover the lower front of the striped shirt.

  15. Attach the tail to the back lower body.
  16. Place the backpack beside the right hand or sew it lightly to the hand for a fixed display pose.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face from the front before securing the last knots. The muzzle should sit low and wide, the eyes should be close together above it, and the sunhat brim should frame the eyes without hiding them.

  • Add the embroidered nose line after the muzzle is sewn down.
  • Add the smile using one gentle curved stitch across the lower muzzle.
  • Use tiny anchoring stitches under the hat brim if it slides forward.
  • Pin the ears before sewing so both sides match in height.
  • Shape the belly by pressing stuffing outward under the overall bib.
  • Make sure the sandals sit flat and the toes remain visible.

Care Notes

This doll is best used as a decorative handmade item. The buttons, eyes, and small backpack loops may not be suitable for very young children unless replaced with embroidered details.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if using glued eyes or decorative buttons.
  • Lay flat to dry after cleaning.
  • Reshape the hat brim and backpack while damp.
  • Keep away from high heat to protect the yarn texture.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished monkey doll in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Long sun exposure can fade the yellow hat, red backpack, and blue sandals. If the doll is displayed on a shelf, gently dust it with a soft brush every few weeks.

For deeper cleaning, dampen a clean cloth with cool water and press gently over the surface. Avoid rubbing the embroidered pocket, muzzle lines, buttons, and eye area. After cleaning, let the doll air dry completely before storing.

  • Wrap the doll in acid-free tissue paper for long storage.
  • Do not compress the hat brim under heavy items.
  • Keep the backpack flap flat so it does not curl.
  • Refresh the stuffing shape by gently rolling the body between your hands.
  • Check button threads once in a while and reinforce them if they loosen.
