This cheerful knitted dachshund doll is dressed for a cozy reading day, wearing a green argyle vest over a cream collared shirt, cuffed plaid trousers, brown shoes, and a blue-green patterned beret with a pom-pom. The design also includes long floppy ears, a tan muzzle, black stitched nose, a crossbody book bag with a small flower, plus tiny reading-day props.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is written in US English knitting terms. The doll is worked mainly flat in small pieces, then seamed, stuffed, and decorated. The finished toy is designed to look like the pictured dachshund: rounded brown head, long dark ears, warm tan muzzle patches, narrow body, soft sleeves, argyle vest, plaid trousers, rounded shoes, and a small shoulder bag.
The stitch counts below are written to create a doll about 11 inches tall when knitted with DK weight yarn and small needles. Use firm stuffing and tight gauge so the fabric holds its shape and the toy looks neat.
Finished Size
- Doll height: about 11 in / 28 cm from beret top to shoe sole.
- Head width: about 3.25 in / 8 cm after stuffing.
- Body width: about 2.75 in / 7 cm across the vest.
- Leg length: about 3.25 in / 8 cm from trouser top to shoe sole.
- Bag size: about 1.5 in / 4 cm tall, excluding handles and strap.
Skill Level
Confident beginner to intermediate. The shaping is simple, but the doll has many small details. The argyle vest and plaid trousers use easy colorwork and embroidery. Beginners may knit the base pieces first, then add the decorative lines slowly after assembly.
Materials
- DK weight yarn in medium dachshund brown for head, body, hands, and shoe soles.
- DK weight yarn in dark chocolate brown for ears, ear edging, nose, and plaid lines.
- DK weight yarn in tan for muzzle, chest details, shoe inserts, and teapot set.
- DK weight yarn in cream for shirt, collar, sleeves, cuffs, and book pages.
- DK weight yarn in moss green for vest body and beret ribbing.
- DK weight yarn in blue for argyle diamonds and beret pattern.
- DK weight yarn in pale green for argyle diamonds and flower leaves.
- Small amounts of rust brown for shoes and trouser waistband detail.
- Small amounts of beige for bag and bag strap.
- Small amounts of red, yellow, and teal for the flower on the bag.
- Pair of US 2 / 2.75 mm straight needles.
- Set of US 2 / 2.75 mm double-pointed needles, optional for small round pieces.
- Tapestry needle.
- Polyester toy stuffing.
- Two 6 mm black safety eyes, or black yarn for embroidered eyes.
- Three tiny tan buttons for the shirt front, or French knots made with yarn.
- One small stitch marker.
Gauge
- Gauge in stockinette: 28 sts and 36 rows = 4 in / 10 cm.
- Firm toy gauge: stitches should look tight enough that stuffing does not show.
- Gauge note: exact gauge is less important than a dense fabric, but all pieces should be knitted with the same tension.
Abbreviations
- BO: bind off.
- CO: cast on.
- k: knit.
- p: purl.
- st / sts: stitch / stitches.
- RS: right side.
- WS: wrong side.
- rnd: round.
- kfb: knit into the front and back of the same stitch.
- k2tog: knit 2 stitches together.
- ssk: slip 1 knitwise, slip 1 knitwise, knit slipped stitches together through back loops.

- seed st: Row 1: k1, p1; Row 2: p the knit sts and k the purl sts.
Helpful Notes Before You Begin
All small pieces should be seamed with mattress stitch when possible. Leave long yarn tails at cast-on and bind-off edges because those tails are useful for sewing the pieces together neatly.
The dachshund face is the most important part of the design. Keep the muzzle low and rounded, place the eyes slightly above the muzzle, and attach the ears long and close to the sides of the head. This gives the doll the soft, loyal dachshund look shown in the image.

Sew the back seam of the body. Stuff firmly, keeping the top narrower than the lower body. Sew the head to the body at a slight forward angle so the dachshund appears to be looking gently outward.
Cream Shirt Front Panel
The cream shirt is visible at the sleeves, collar, and small center front beneath the vest. Knit this narrow panel in cream yarn.

Cream Sleeves and Brown Paws
Make two arms. Each arm begins with a brown paw and changes to a cream shirt sleeve. The pictured sleeves are loose, rounded, and end with small rolled cuffs.

Cream Argyle Crossing Lines
After the vest is knitted, use cream yarn and a tapestry needle to embroider thin diagonal lines. Work one line from the lower left rib to the upper right shoulder, passing through the centers of the diamonds. Work a second line from the lower right rib to the upper left shoulder.
- Use one long duplicate-stitch diagonal over every second knitted row.
- Keep the line thin, not bulky.
- Cross the lines through the blue and pale green diamond centers.
- Do not pull too tightly, or the vest will pucker.
Vest Edging
Sew the vest shoulder seams. Place the vest on the body and sew side seams, leaving armholes open. With moss green yarn, embroider a ribbed V-neck edge by making short vertical stitches along both sides of the V. Add the same short vertical stitches around each armhole.

Shaping the Doll to Match the Picture
- Head: round and slightly taller than wide, with the face centered below the beret.
- Ears: long, dark, floppy, and attached low enough to frame the muzzle.
- Body: shorter than the head-and-leg section, with a soft rectangular vest shape.
- Arms: angled downward, cream sleeves visible, brown paws at the ends.
- Trousers: roomy with visible cuff folds at the bottom.
- Shoes: round and slightly oversized, giving the doll a storybook style.
- Bag: placed across the body from shoulder to opposite hip.
- Beret: wide, soft, and tilted slightly to one side.
Detailed Sewing Order
- Knit and stuff the head first.
- Sew on the muzzle, brow patches, nose, mouth, and eyes.
- Knit the ears and attach them to the sides of the head.
- Knit, seam, and stuff the body.
- Sew the cream shirt front to the body.
- Knit the arms and sew them to the upper body.
- Knit the vest, add argyle embroidery, and sew it around the shirt and body.
- Knit the legs or inner leg supports.
- Knit the trousers, add plaid lines, and dress the lower body.
- Knit and attach the shoes.
- Knit the collar pieces and sew them over the vest neckline.
- Knit and finish the beret, then sew or tack it to the head.
- Knit the bag and strap, decorate the front, and place it crossbody.
- Add the optional book, teapot, and teacup props.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check the face before making final knots. The eyes should be even, the nose should sit at the center of the tan muzzle, and the mouth line should be small and calm. Add a tiny black stitch under the nose if the expression needs more definition.
Attach the head firmly to the body with several rounds of stitching. Hide all yarn tails inside the toy. Lightly shape the beret by smoothing the top outward and tacking one side lower for the same tilted look shown in the image.
Care Notes
- Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if using safety eyes, tiny buttons, or embroidered props.
- Let the doll air dry flat on a clean towel.
- Reshape the beret, ears, bag, and trouser cuffs while damp.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the doll away from strong sunlight so the blue, green, brown, and cream yarns stay fresh. Keep the small book, teapot, and teacup in a breathable fabric pouch when not displayed.
To refresh the doll, use a lint roller gently over the clothing and a soft toothbrush for the plaid trousers and argyle vest. Avoid brushing the embroidered face too firmly, because the small features can loosen over time.
If the doll will be gifted to a young child, replace safety eyes and buttons with embroidered details. Check all seams, straps, ears, and props carefully before use.
