Pattern Overview

This free crochet pattern is written in US English crochet terms. The finished play set is designed as a display and gentle-play scene with many small pieces. The main base is a thick circular lake with a green shoreline attached to the back half.

The cabin, mountains, trees, dock, canoe, beavers, and accessories are made separately, then sewn or glued into position. For a child-safe version, sew every piece firmly and embroider the eyes instead of using plastic safety eyes.

  • Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Main techniques: Magic ring, single crochet, increases, decreases, back-loop work, front-loop work, surface slip stitch, simple shaping, light embroidery, and sewing.
  • Finished base size: About 14 in wide and 2 in thick when using worsted weight yarn and a 3.5 mm hook.
  • Finished cabin size: About 5 in tall, 4 in wide, and 4.5 in deep.
  • Finished beavers: About 3 in seated.

Gauge and Notes

Gauge is not strict, but a tight fabric is important for amigurumi pieces. Your stitches should be firm enough that stuffing does not show. If your work has gaps, go down a hook size. If the base curls too much, go up a hook size for the flat lake rounds.

  • Work in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
  • Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of each round.
  • Stuff pieces gradually and firmly, but do not overstuff flat parts.
  • The photographed layout has the lake in the front, grassy shore in the back, cabin on the left back side, mountains behind the cabin, dock on the right, canoe on the left front water, and campfire near the center shore.

Main Lake Base

The lake base is a thick blue circle with a raised side wall. The top is worked as a flat circle, then the side wall is crocheted downward. A second flat circle closes the bottom, making the base sturdy and rounded like the image.

Top Lake Circle

Use lake blue yarn and a 3.5 mm hook.

  1. R1: MR, 8 sc in ring. Do not join. 8 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 16 sts.

Do not fasten off. Check that the circle lies mostly flat. A slight ripple will settle once the side wall and stuffing are added.

Lake Side Wall

  1. R19: BLO sc in each st around. 144 sts.
  2. R20 to R25: sc in each st around for 6 rounds. 144 sts each round.

FO, leaving a long tail. Cut a circle of plastic canvas or firm cardboard slightly smaller than the lake top. Place it inside the base. Add a light layer of stuffing around the edge so the side wall looks padded.

Bottom Circle

Make a second circle in lake blue by repeating R1 to R18 of the top lake circle. FO with a very long tail. Hold the bottom circle against the side wall and whipstitch R18 of the bottom circle to the inner loops of R26 of the side wall. Add more stuffing before closing the final 3 in.

Water Texture

  • With lake blue, surface sl st a spiral line from the center outward, following the round shape.
  • With white embroidery thread, stitch 6 short curved water ripples around the canoe area.
  • Add 3 tiny white fishing-line ripples near the dock and 2 near the front fish.

Green Shore Overlay

The grass piece covers the back half of the lake and creates the wooded camping area. Its lower edge should curve slightly into the lake, just like a soft grassy bank.

Use grass green yarn and a 3.5 mm hook. Work in rows.

  1. Row 1: ch 75, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 74 sts.
  2. Row 2: ch 1, turn, dec, sc 70, dec. 72 sts.

  18. Row 18: ch 1, turn, dec, sc 54, dec. 56 sts.
  19. Row 19 to Row 23: ch 1, turn, sc across. 56 sts each row.

Do not fasten off. Work a border around the piece: sc evenly around all sides, placing 2 sc in each corner. Along the front shoreline edge, make a soft uneven bank by repeating sl st, sc, hdc, sc, sl st across. FO with a long tail.

Place the grass overlay across the back half of the lake. The straight upper edge sits near the back rim. The wavy edge faces the water. Sew around the edge using small stitches. Add random surface slip stitches in olive green and darker green to create the textured mossy look.

Placement Guide

Arrange everything before sewing. This step is important because the play set is full of small details. The front third should remain mostly blue water. The back half should feel like a cozy forest campsite.

  • Place the cabin on the back left grass section, angled slightly toward the front.
  • Place the chimney on the cabin’s left roof side.
  • Place the three mountains behind the cabin and trees, with the tallest mountain in the center.
  • Place tall pines behind the cabin and to the right of the mountains.
  • Place medium and small pines around the left sign and right dock.
  • Place the campfire at the center of the grassy bank.
  • Place the canoe in the front left water with the beaver seated inside.
  • Place the fishing line from the canoe toward the center water.
  • Place the dock on the right water edge with the beaver seated on top.
  • Place ducks, fish, lily pads, mushrooms, flowers, ferns, logs, and the pot last.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Sew the large pieces first: grass overlay, cabin, mountains, trees, dock, and canoe. Use long tails and small whipstitches. Pull the yarn snugly, but do not distort the round lake base.

For each beaver face, embroider two small black eyes above the cream muzzle. Add a black nose at the top center of the muzzle. Stitch one short vertical mouth line below the nose. Add two tiny cream straight stitches on each side if you want whisker highlights.

Sew the canoe beaver into the canoe so the body sits low and the head rises above the rim. Sew the dock beaver to the platform with the tail visible behind. Attach the blue fish between the dock beaver’s arms.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if cardboard, wire, or glued details were used.
  • Let the play set air dry flat on a towel.
  • Reshape the trees, mountains, dock posts, and cabin roof while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The lake base is firm, round, and evenly stuffed.
  • The grass overlay is sewn smoothly across the back half.
  • The cabin doorway is dark and open-looking.
  • The chimney, smoke, and log trim are securely attached.
  • All three snowy mountains are placed behind the forest.
  • The canoe, dock, beavers, fishing line, firepit, sign, ducks, fish, lily pads, mushrooms, flowers, ferns, bucket, pot, and log bundle are attached.
  • No loose yarn tails remain visible.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Keep the crochet lake play set away from direct sunlight for long periods, because bright yarn colors can fade. Store it in a breathable cotton bag or display box when not in use.

To remove dust, use a soft paintbrush and gently brush between the trees, cabin roof, dock posts, and tiny accessories. Avoid pulling on the smoke, fishing line, flowers, and fern leaves.

If a small part loosens, do not pull it away. Thread a yarn needle with matching yarn and stitch through the base of the piece several times. Knot securely underneath or hide the knot inside nearby stitches.
