Crochet Tutorial: Fox Hollow Camp Play Set – Free Crochet Pattern.

This playful crochet scene features a round grassy camp base with a raised rim, two tall pine trees, a cozy A-frame tent, fox campers, a sleeping fox in a hammock, glowing-style campfire, stream, dock, stump, sign, mushrooms, stones, ferns, flowers, and hanging camp lights. The design uses firm amigurumi shaping, tight stitches, layered details, and sewn-on accessories to create the same miniature woodland play set shown in the photo.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Skill Level

Intermediate amigurumi with detailed assembly. Confident beginners can follow this pattern slowly because every major part is written round by round. The project is worked mostly in single crochet, with increases, decreases, simple shaping, surface stitching, and sewing.

Finished Size

  • Full play set: about 15 in wide and 12 in tall when made with worsted weight yarn and a 3.0 mm hook.
  • Round base: about 14 to 15 in across.

Gauge and Construction Notes

Use tight stitches so stuffing does not show. Amigurumi parts are worked in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join. Mark the first stitch of every round. Stuff heads, bodies, tails, trees, and trunks firmly but do not overstuff flat items such as the tent cover, hammock, stream, or dock.

The photo shows a firm circular display base with a tall rounded green rim. To copy that structure, the base is crocheted as a flat spiral circle, then edged with several vertical rounds. A cardboard circle is inserted before the final base rounds so the play set can stand neatly on a table.

Round Grass Base

The base is a large flat green circle with visible spiral ridges and a raised border. Use grass green yarn and the 3.5 mm hook for a smooth, broad surface.

  3. FO, leaving a sewing tail.

Sew the post to the back of the sign. Embroider simple block letters in dark brown yarn. Sew the sign to the left front area of the base, near ferns and stones.

Mushrooms

The set has red mushrooms with white dots, tiny tan mushrooms, and small gray mushrooms around the camp. Make several and place them near the stream, tree bases, and sign.

Red Mushroom Cap

  2. R2-R5: Sc in each st around. 5 sts.
  3. FO, leaving a tail.

Stuff the cap lightly, sew it to the stem, and embroider white French knots or small straight stitches on the red cap. Make 3 red mushrooms in different heights.

Tiny Tan Mushroom

  1. With tan yarn, R1: Work 5 sc in MR. 5 sts.
  2. R2: Inc in each st around. 10 sts.

  2. R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc in each st around. 12 sts.

  4. R3: Sc in each st around. 16 sts.
  5. R4: Sc 2, dec; repeat around. 12 sts.
  6. Stuff lightly. FO and close.

Make at least 12 rocks. Sew them in small groups around the stream, near the sign, at the base of each tree, and beside the mushrooms.

Ferns and Grass Tufts

The camp has leafy green texture near the sign, trees, and stream. These pieces are quick but important for the woodland look.

Fern Leaf

  1. With dark green yarn, ch 12.
  2. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook.
  3. Ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 2 ch, sl st into next main chain.
  4. Repeat the small side branch on both sides of the main chain by rotating the work as needed.
  5. FO, leaving a tail for sewing.

Grass Tuft

  1. Ch 7, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and each ch back.
  2. Ch 5, sl st back down.
  3. Ch 6, sl st back down.
  4. Ch 4, sl st back down.
  5. FO with a long tail.

Make 8 to 12 ferns and grass tufts. Sew them upright in clusters. Place the densest cluster behind the right fox and around the stream, like the photo.

Small Yellow Flowers

There is a tiny yellow flower cluster near the hammock area. Make several simple flowers.

  1. With yellow yarn, work 5 sc in MR.
  2. Sl st to first sc.
  3. Ch 2, sl st in same st; repeat in each of the 5 sts to make petals.
  4. FO, leaving a tail.
  5. With green yarn, ch 5 and sl st back down for a stem.
  6. Sew the flower to the stem, then sew to the base.

Placement Guide

Use the photo layout as your map. The tent sits on the left, the campfire is centered, the stream and dock are on the front right, and the two pine trees stand behind the foxes. The hammock hangs between the trunks. The scene should look full but still readable.

  • Back left: first tall pine tree.
  • Back right: second tall pine tree.
  • Between trees: hammock with sleeping fox.
  • Across trees: string lights above the hammock.
  • Left side: brown A-frame tent and sign.
  • Center: campfire and logs.
  • Front center: stump seat.
  • Right front: blue stream, stones, dock, red mushrooms, and ferns.
  • Center figures: blue camper fox by the fire and green-hat fox near the stream.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Pin every large piece to the base before sewing. Check the balance from the front, sides, and top.
  2. Sew the two trees first because they anchor the hammock and lights.
  3. Sew the tent next, keeping its doorway visible.
  4. Add the stream, dock, sign, campfire, stump, rocks, mushrooms, ferns, and flowers.
  5. Sew the foxes last so their faces point toward the viewer and the fire.
  6. For each fox, embroider black noses, small smiles, and ear tips. Add white cheek stitches if desired.
  7. Hide all yarn tails inside the work or under the base.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if cardboard, plastic canvas, twine, or decorative lights are inside the play set.
  • Keep away from candles, open flame, and high heat.
  • For children under three, embroider eyes instead of using safety eyes.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Round base is firm and flat.
  • Outer rim is even and raised.
  • Tent sits at a left-side angle with the doorway open.
  • Both trees stand upright and are securely sewn.
  • Hammock hangs between trees and holds the sleeping fox.
  • String lights sag gently and have six yellow bulbs.
  • Campfire has logs arranged in a circle and upright flames.
  • Stream, dock, mushrooms, stones, ferns, flowers, stump, and sign are attached.
  • Fox faces are centered, neat, and expressive.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, dust the play set gently with a soft brush. Lift loose dust from the pine layers, tent ridges, fox faces, and campfire logs. Avoid pulling on the hammock ropes or light strand while cleaning.

For small stains, dampen a white cloth with cool water and press lightly. Do not rub hard because amigurumi stitches can fuzz. Let the piece air dry completely on a flat towel before storing.

Store the play set in a breathable box with tissue paper around the foxes, tent, and trees. Keep it away from direct sunlight so the greens, orange fox yarn, and blue stream stay bright.
