This snowy Christmas farm stable play set is a detailed crochet scene with a round winter base, cozy beige stable, glowing-style windows, snow-covered roof, chimney smoke, pine trees, a decorated Christmas tree, wooden fence, lanterns, hay bales, animal friends, and tiny footprints in the snow. The set includes a horse, cow, donkey, pig with scarf, sheep, chicken, robin, and many small farmyard details.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms. The play set is made as several structured pieces that are crocheted separately, lightly stuffed where needed, then sewn to a firm round base. The stable uses crocheted wall panels over a plastic canvas or cardboard insert so the house keeps the upright shape shown in the image.

The finished scene is designed to look like a miniature snowy farm at dusk. The base is wide and flat, the stable sits slightly toward the back, and the animals are arranged around the open front stall. The Christmas tree and fence complete the cozy winter farm look.

Finished Size

  • Whole display base: about 14 in / 35.5 cm across.
  • Stable: about 8 in / 20 cm wide, 6 in / 15 cm deep, and 7.5 in / 19 cm tall to the roof peak.
  • Large pig: about 3.5 in / 9 cm tall.
  • Horse, cow, donkey heads: about 2.5 in / 6.5 cm tall visible inside the stall.
  • Christmas tree: about 4 in / 10 cm tall.
  • Fence height: about 1.25 in / 3 cm.

Skill Level

Intermediate. A confident beginner can make the simpler animals and accessories, but the stable, roof shaping, fencing, and many small sewn details need patience. Work slowly, count often, and pin pieces in place before sewing.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in white, cream, beige, tan, straw, dark brown, medium brown, gray, charcoal, black, pink, green, red, gold, yellow, blue, orange, and small scraps of festive colors.
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for firm amigurumi pieces.
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook for the base and stable panels.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Plastic canvas, thin craft foam, or sturdy cardboard for stable walls, roof, door, base support, and chimney support.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Black safety eyes, 6 mm for the pig and 4 mm for small animals, or black yarn embroidery.
  • Small amount of brushed white yarn or wool roving for chimney smoke.
  • Optional battery tea lights or warm fairy lights for display only.
  • Optional fabric glue for securing tiny decorations.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • sts: stitches
  • rnd: round
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge

Gauge is not critical, but firm stitches are important. With worsted weight yarn and a 3.0 mm hook, 6 sc and 6 rows should measure about 1 in / 2.5 cm. Use tight tension so stuffing and inserts do not show through.

Important Construction Notes

  • Work amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
  • Use a stitch marker at the beginning of every round.
  • Stuff animal pieces firmly but not so much that stitches stretch.
  • The stable walls are crocheted as flat panels and sewn around inserts.
  • The roof is made wider than the walls so it hangs over the front and sides like the image.
  • Snow layers are made with white yarn and sewn unevenly for a natural snowy edge.

Round Snowy Display Base

The base is a wide, low round platform with a raised rim. It should look like a thick crochet snow mat sitting on a wooden table. Use two circles with a firm insert between them for stability.

Loose Straw and Snow Details

Small scattered stitches make the base look like a real winter farmyard. Add them after the larger pieces are sewn down.

  • With straw yarn, embroider 12 to 18 short lines near the chicken.
  • With tan yarn, embroider a small hay spill near the stall opening.
  • With white yarn, sew a few extra raised snow stitches around the fence posts.
  • With gray yarn, add 4 to 6 tiny pebble stitches near the footprints.

Optional Warm Window Glow

For a display piece only, you may place a small battery tea light behind the stable opening before final placement. Do not use wired lights or button batteries in toys for children. For a safe crochet-only version, the yellow and orange yarn details already give the window a glowing look.

Full Scene Placement Guide

  1. Sew the stable to the back half of the snowy round base, centered slightly behind the middle line.
  2. Place the horse head inside the left side of the stall.
  3. Place the cow head near the center of the stall.
  4. Place the donkey head inside the right side of the stall.
  5. Sew hay inside the stall and around the animal bases to hide joins.

  13. Add the gate at the front center.
  14. Sew the lanterns by the front fence and gate.
  15. Sew the robin to the taller right fence post.
  16. Add footprints, straw, snow, and tiny pebble stitches last.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Before final sewing, pin every animal, tree, bale, lantern, and fence post in place. Look at the scene from the front. The stable should be the tallest piece, the roof should overhang evenly, and the Christmas tree should sit just in front of the right stall post.

  • Use black yarn for all small eyes if the set is for a child under 3.
  • Place the pig’s eyes evenly above the snout and keep the expression gentle.
  • Keep animal noses small so the faces stay soft and handmade.
  • Trim horse mane strands neatly but leave them slightly uneven.
  • Brush chimney smoke lightly and shape it upward with your fingers.

Care Notes

Spot clean only. Use a damp cloth and mild soap on dirty areas. Do not soak the stable because the wall inserts and base insert may bend. Let the set air dry fully before storing.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Stable is centered and firmly attached to the base.
  • Roof has a visible white snow cap and straw-colored edge.
  • Chimney is upright with gray stone embroidery and white smoke.
  • Horse, cow, and donkey are visible inside the stall.
  • Pig has a blue scarf and stands near the hay bales.
  • Sheep, chicken, robin, trees, lanterns, gate, and footprints are all added.
  • All yarn tails are woven in securely.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished crochet stable in a dry box away from direct sunlight. Place tissue paper around the chimney, roof, trees, and fence so the small parts do not bend. If dust gathers, use a soft brush and clean gently from the top down.

For long-term display, keep the set away from moisture, pets, and open flames. If using battery lights nearby, remove the batteries before storage. Reshape the smoke, roof snow, and pine branches with your fingers whenever needed.
