Knitting Tutorial: Chihuahua Carrot Garden Overalls Doll – Free Knitting Pattern.

This sweet knitted Chihuahua doll wears a mustard yellow garden sweater, cream-and-olive striped overalls with carrot embroidery, tiny sandals with daisies, a round shoulder basket, and a matching garden sun hat. The large upright ears, soft cream muzzle, glossy eyes, black nose, and curved smile give the doll the gentle handmade look shown in the photo.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Doll height: about 13 inches from heel to ear tip.
  • Head width: about 4.5 inches across the cheeks.
  • Body length: about 5 inches from neck to seat.
  • Leg length: about 4.5 inches before sandals.
  • Hat width: about 5 inches across the brim.
  • Basket size: about 2 inches wide and 1.75 inches tall.

Skill Level

This pattern is suitable for confident beginners who know how to knit, purl, increase, decrease, seam, stuff firmly, and work simple embroidery. Small pieces are knitted with tight tension so the finished doll keeps a neat amigurumi-style shape.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in warm tan for the Chihuahua head, body, ears, tail, and legs.
  • DK weight yarn in cream for muzzle, paws, overalls, sandal flowers, and hat flower petals.
  • DK weight yarn in mustard yellow for sweater, hat band, basket, and flower centers.
  • DK weight yarn in olive green for overalls stripes, carrot tops, small leaves, and hat leaves.
  • DK weight yarn in orange for carrot embroidery.
  • Small amount of dark brown yarn for basket patch and sunflower-style hat flower center.
  • Small amount of black embroidery floss for mouth, paw lines, and sandal toe details.
  • Pair of 8 mm safety eyes or glossy black sew-on eyes.
  • One 10 mm black safety nose or sew-on oval nose.
  • Two tiny tan or wooden buttons for overall straps.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • US size 2 knitting needles, 2.75 mm, for firm fabric.
  • US size 3 knitting needles, 3.25 mm, for sweater and overalls if your gauge is tight.
  • Two double-pointed needles for I-cord straps and basket handle.
  • Tapestry needle, pins, stitch markers, scissors, and removable marker.

Gauge

Gauge: 28 stitches and 36 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch using US size 2 needles. The exact gauge is less important than firmness. Your knitted fabric should be dense enough that stuffing does not show through the stitches.

Construction Notes

The Chihuahua is knitted mostly flat, then seamed with mattress stitch. The head is shaped as a rounded ball with a soft pointed nose area created by a separate cream muzzle. The ears are large, triangular, slightly cupped, and attached high on the head at outward angles.

The body is pear-shaped and covered with separate garden overalls. The sweater sleeves are mustard yellow and are knitted as simple tubes. The overalls are cream with olive stripes, rounded short legs, a bib, shoulder straps, and tiny buttons.

Stuff the head and body very firmly. Stuff the arms and legs more lightly near the ends so they can relax naturally like the doll in the photo. Pin every piece in place before sewing to keep the seated, soft garden-doll pose balanced.

Chihuahua Head

Use warm tan yarn and US size 2 needles. The head is worked flat from the lower back of the head to the crown, then seamed. Keep your tension firm and even.

Seam the back of the head from crown to cast-on edge, leaving a 1.5 inch opening. Stuff very firmly, shaping the cheeks wide and the forehead smooth. Close the opening neatly. Roll the head gently between your palms to remove corners.

Cream Muzzle

The muzzle is a small oval pad placed low on the face. It should sit between the eyes and cover the lower center of the head, like the pale oval shown in the image.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: purl all sts.
  3. Row 2: kfb, k6, kfb. You now have 10 sts.

  9. Row 14: ssk, k6, k2tog. You now have 8 sts.
  10. Row 15: purl all sts.
  11. BO all sts.

With the cast-on edge toward the nose and the bind-off edge toward the chin, sew the muzzle to the lower front of the head. Add a tiny amount of stuffing under the center before closing the final inch so the muzzle becomes softly raised.

Face Placement

  • Place safety eyes 7 sts apart, slightly above the top edge of the muzzle.
  • The eyes should sit at a gentle diagonal, giving the doll a sweet puppy expression.
  • Place the black nose at the upper center of the cream muzzle.
  • Use black embroidery floss to stitch a vertical line from the nose downward for 3 rows.
  • Stitch two small curved smile lines from the bottom of that line, forming a soft “Y” shape.
  • Add one tiny black stitch at each lower side of the muzzle if you want extra expression.

Large Chihuahua Ears

Make two outer ears in tan and two inner ears in slightly lighter tan or cream-tan. The ears are long triangles with rounded bases. The finished ears should stand upright and angle outward.

Outer Ear, Make 2

  1. With tan yarn, CO 22 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: knit every row for a garter edge.

  6. Rows 6 to 20: continue in st st, decreasing 1 st at each end on every RS row until 2 sts remain.
  7. Final row: p2tog and fasten off.

Sew one inner ear to one outer ear, leaving the lower cast-on edge open. Do not stuff. Fold the lower edge inward slightly and sew a shallow dart at the base, about 0.5 inch long. This makes the ears cup forward like the photo.

Attach the ears high on the head, about 1 inch apart at the crown. Angle the left ear slightly vertical and the right ear outward. Sew firmly around the base twice so the ears stay lifted.

Body

The body is hidden under the overalls, but it needs a sturdy pear shape. Use warm tan yarn. The lower body should be wider than the neck so the overalls look full and rounded.

  1. CO 14 sts.
  2. Row 1: purl all sts.
  3. Row 2: kfb in every st across. You now have 28 sts.

Legs

Make two legs in warm tan. The legs are slim and long, with soft rounded feet. They are attached low on the body and point forward so the doll can sit on a bench or shelf.

  1. CO 16 sts.

The arms begin with cream paws and continue into mustard yellow sweater sleeves. Make two. The cream paw tips show below the yellow sleeves.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 12 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 6: work in st st.

Small Tail

The tail is partly visible behind the side of the overalls. It should look small, tapered, and softly curved.

  1. With tan yarn, CO 10 sts.

  6. Rows 21 to 26: work in st st.
  7. Rows 27 to 30: k1, p1 rib across for the turtleneck.
  8. BO loosely in rib.

Seam the sweater at the back. Pull it onto the doll before sewing the arms permanently if needed. The ribbed neck should sit snugly under the head and appear as a small yellow collar.

Sew one end of each strap to the top corners of the bib. Cross them lightly over the shoulders or keep them straight, depending on your doll’s fit. Sew the back ends to the back waist. Add one small button at each front strap base.

Carrot Embroidery on Bib

The bib has three tiny carrots. Place them in a row across the center, with the middle carrot slightly lower. Use orange yarn for the carrot bodies and olive green yarn for the leafy tops.

Daisy Petals

  • With white yarn, CO 3 sts.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Sew one daisy to the front of one sandal. Sew the second daisy near the base of the right ear, slightly forward on the head. Add one tiny olive green stitch beside the head daisy for a leaf.

Optional Sunflower Accent for Hat

The hat flower in the photo has a sunflower feeling, with a dark center and warm yellow petals. Use this version if you want the hat decoration to match the image more closely than a simple daisy.

  • Make 10 mustard yellow petals using the same petal method as above, but CO 4 sts for each petal.
  • Make one dark brown center by gathering a 1 inch knitted square.
  • Add 2 olive leaves behind the flower.
  • Sew the flower to the left side of the hat band.

Assembly Order

  1. Finish and stuff the head, body, legs, arms, ears, and tail.
  2. Sew the muzzle to the face and install or sew on the eyes and nose.
  3. Embroider the mouth before attaching the head to the body.
  4. Sew the head to the body, checking that the face looks forward.
  5. Attach the ears high on the head, cupping them forward.
  6. Attach the tail to the back lower body.
  7. Dress the body in the mustard sweater.
  8. Sew the legs and arms in place if they were not attached earlier.
  9. Put the overalls on the doll and seam the back neatly.
  10. Sew on the bib, straps, buttons, and carrot embroidery.
  11. Add sandals, ankle ties, basket, head daisy, and final small details.
  12. Shape the hat and place it beside the doll as a separate accessory.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face from the front before tying off any final knots. The eyes should be glossy and slightly wide-set, the muzzle should be centered, and the smile should be soft. A tiny adjustment in eye angle can completely change the expression.

Use long tan yarn tails to refine the head shape if needed. A small tightening stitch from cheek to cheek can make the muzzle area sit forward. Do not pull too hard, because the Chihuahua should still look gentle and rounded.

After all clothing is attached, smooth the overalls with your fingers. The striped pants should look full at the hips and softly rounded at the cuffs. The yellow sleeves should hang straight, with the cream paws visible at the ends.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if you used safety eyes, buttons, or a structured basket.
  • Press gently with a towel after cleaning.
  • Allow the doll and accessories to air dry fully before storing.
  • Keep away from rough hooks, sharp decorations, and strong sunlight.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is firmly stuffed and smoothly rounded.
  • The ears stand upright and angle outward like a Chihuahua’s ears.
  • The cream muzzle is centered below the eyes.
  • The yellow sweater collar sits under the head.
  • The overalls have visible olive stripes across the legs and belly.
  • The bib has three orange carrots with green leafy tops.
  • The basket hangs diagonally across the body.
  • The sandals include toe lines and a small daisy accent.
  • The hat has a rolled brim, yellow band, and flower decoration.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the doll in a dry place away from direct sunlight. If the ears flatten during storage, reshape them by hand and let the doll rest upright overnight. Do not iron the face, ears, basket, or embroidered details.

For long-term display, support the seated body so the legs do not stretch. Keep the hat separate when storing to protect the brim. If the basket strap loosens, tack it back into place with a small matching stitch.

When gifting this doll, mention that small buttons and safety parts may not be suitable for very young children. For a child-safe version, embroider the eyes and nose instead of using plastic parts, and replace buttons with stitched circles.
