Create a cozy river picnic play mat featuring four tiny woodland friends gathered on a cream-and-pastel picnic blanket. The scene includes a blue river border, green grassy island, pebble edging, arched bridge, willow tree, cattails, flowers, ducklings, toy boats, baskets, picnic foods, and a small “River Picnic” sign. This pattern uses US crochet terms and is written for detailed amigurumi-style construction.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Skill Level
This project is best for confident beginners to intermediate crocheters. The main stitches are simple, but the full scene has many small parts. Work slowly, use stitch markers, and finish each tiny accessory before moving to the next section.
Finished Size
- Full river mat: about 19–21 inches across when worked with DK cotton and a 3.0 mm hook.
- Picnic blanket: about 8.5 inches square before corner rounding.
- Woodland friends: about 3.5–4 inches tall including hats.
- Willow tree: about 6–7 inches tall.
- Bridge: about 5 inches wide and 2.5 inches tall at the arch.
Materials
- DK or light worsted cotton yarn in sky blue, deep green, cream, beige, tan, brown, dark brown, mint, yellow, rust orange, soft blue, white, red, navy, gray, pink, purple, leaf green, and small amounts of black.

- 2.5 mm crochet hook for flowers, facial details, tiny foods, and sign lettering.
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- Yarn needle and small sewing needle.
- Removable stitch markers.
- Cardboard or plastic canvas for the bridge, sign, and optional mat support.
- Black embroidery thread for eyes and mouths.
- Optional safety eyes, 5 mm, if this is not intended for children under 3.
Abbreviations
- MR: magic ring
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- tr: treble crochet
- inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
- dec: invisible single crochet decrease
- BLO: back loop only
- FLO: front loop only
- FO: fasten off

Gauge and Construction Notes
Exact gauge is not critical, but the stitches should be firm enough that stuffing does not show through. For amigurumi pieces, use a smaller hook than your yarn label recommends. Keep the animal bodies compact and rounded, with heads slightly larger than bodies, just like the image.
The river mat is made in a large flat spiral. The green island is worked separately and sewn onto the blue base. The picnic blanket is placed at the center, tilted slightly like a diamond. The bridge, tree, sign, animals, baskets, boats, ducks, cattails, flowers, and stones are added last.
Part 1: Round Blue River Mat
Blue River Base
Use sky blue yarn and the 3.0 mm hook. Work in continuous rounds. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round. The base should remain flat. If it begins to wave, loosen your tension. If it cups, add one extra increase evenly in the next round.

Sl st to the next stitch and FO, leaving a long tail. Steam lightly if needed, but do not press hard. The blue base should look like calm water surrounding the picnic island.
Dark Green Outer Lip
Attach deep green yarn to any stitch on the final blue round. This gives the mat a neat framed edge and creates the darker outline visible around the river scene.

FO and weave in the ends. The edge should sit slightly raised but not curled. This raised lip will help hold the pebble border in place.
Part 2: Green Grassy Island
The grassy island sits over the blue river and is slightly oval in appearance. Work a round green circle, then shape it subtly during sewing by stretching the sides and tacking it flat. Use deep green yarn.

Sl st to finish. FO with a very long sewing tail. Place the island in the center of the river base, leaving a wide blue ring visible all around. Pin it flat, then sew around the edge using small stitches.
Grassy Texture Lines
With lighter green yarn, embroider curved running stitches across the island. Follow the direction of the crochet rounds. Add short random straight stitches near the flowers and picnic area to make the grass look soft and handmade.
Part 3: Pebble Border
The image shows rounded gray stones placed around the river edge. Make about 34 to 40 pebbles in mixed light gray, medium gray, beige gray, and cream gray. Vary the sizes so the border looks natural.

Before sewing everything permanently, arrange all pieces on the mat. The final look depends on careful placement. The blanket should be central, the animals should face forward, and the river details should frame the scene like a miniature storybook picnic.
- Place the bridge at the back left-to-center river area.
- Place the willow tree at the back right, slightly behind the island.
- Place the sign on the right side of the grass, near the tree.
- Place the picnic blanket in the center, rotated like a diamond.
- Place the rabbit on the left side of the blanket.
- Place the blue-sweater friend near the back center of the blanket.
- Place the yellow bear on the back right of the blanket.
- Place the mint friend on the far right front edge of the blanket.
- Place baskets and foods between the animals, leaving faces visible.
- Place boats and ducklings on the blue river, away from the pebble border.
- Place cattails in groups near the outer river edge.
- Place flowers around the grass, especially near the lower right and left sides.
Part 18: Sewing Order
Sewing in the correct order keeps the scene clean and stable. Use matching yarn where possible. For tiny pieces, use sewing thread in a matching color if yarn feels too bulky.
- Sew the green island onto the blue river mat.
- Sew the pebble border around the outside edge.
- Sew the picnic blanket onto the center grass area.
- Sew the bridge into place at the back river area.
- Sew the tree trunk and roots onto the back right grass area.
- Add willow strands after the trunk is firmly attached.
- Sew the sign post and sign board near the right side.
- Sew the animals to the blanket, catching only the lower body and feet so the heads remain dimensional.
- Sew baskets, foods, plates, and mug onto the blanket.
- Sew boats and ducks onto the river.
- Sew cattails, grasses, and flowers around the island and border.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check that each animal faces the front of the scene. Use black embroidery thread to add small oval eyes if you did not use safety eyes. Add short eyebrows, tiny noses, and gentle mouth curves. Keep the facial details simple and soft.
Add blush with a small amount of pink yarn or thread by making one short stitch under each eye. Do not make the faces too large; the charm of this design comes from the tiny peaceful expressions.
Secure all loose ends underneath the mat. If the mat will be used for display only, you can add a felt or fabric backing. If it will be handled often, reinforce the bridge, sign, tree, and animals with extra hidden stitches.
Care Notes
Spot clean only when possible. Use a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid soaking the full piece because the bridge, sign, tree, and tiny foods may lose shape. Let the mat dry flat in a well-ventilated area.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- Blue river mat lies flat and round.

- Pebbles, flowers, cattails, boats, ducks, baskets, and foods are evenly arranged.
- All yarn ends are woven in securely.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the finished river picnic scene flat in a dry place. Keep it away from direct sunlight to prevent fading. If dust collects on the willow strands or pebble border, gently lift it away with a soft brush.
For long-term display, place the piece on a shelf or table where the raised animals and tree will not be compressed. Do not stack heavy items on top. Refresh the shape by gently fluffing the animals, willow leaves, and cattails with your fingers.
