Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English for knitters who are comfortable working small pieces in the round and flat. The cat is built from separate knitted parts, then stuffed firmly and sewn together. The shaping is designed to match the soft toy in the image: a large round head, short seated body, dangling legs, rounded paws, slim arms, and detailed garden accessories.

  • Finished height: about 12 inches from shoes to ear tips when seated.
  • Recommended yarn: DK weight cotton or cotton-acrylic blend.
  • Needles: US 2 or US 3 double-pointed needles, or size needed for a tight toy fabric.
  • Gauge: 7 stitches and 10 rounds = 1 inch in stockinette, worked firmly.
  • Construction: mostly in the round, with a few flat pieces for overalls, straps, glasses, bag, and appliqués.

Materials

  • DK yarn in cream for face, muzzle, sweater, hands, and lower legs.
  • DK yarn in orange for calico patches, ears, socks, shoes, apples, and shoe toes.
  • DK yarn in light gray for calico patch, ear edging, and ankle trim.
  • DK yarn in dark denim blue for overalls and overall straps.
  • DK yarn in pink for heart glasses and shoe edging.
  • DK yarn in sky blue, black, and white for embroidered eyes.
  • DK yarn in golden yellow and warm tan for socks, bag, straw hat, and accessories.
  • Small amounts of green, red, brown, and white for apples, mushroom, daisies, and details.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Two 6 mm brown buttons for overall straps, or knit button circles if preferred.
  • Optional thin craft wire for shaping the pink heart glasses.

  • 1×1 rib: k1, p1 repeat.
  • I-cord: knit a small cord by sliding stitches to the other end of the needle after each row.

Important Knitting Notes

Work the toy fabric tightly so stuffing does not show through. When changing colors for calico patches, twist yarns on the inside every 3 to 4 stitches to prevent gaps. The head uses planned color blocks, but small irregular embroidered duplicate-stitch patches may be added later to create the handmade calico look.

The doll is made to sit. Stuff the head firmly, the body medium-firm, and the legs lightly at the upper thighs. This gives the same relaxed seated pose shown in the picture, with the overalls slightly puffed at the hips and the shoes hanging over the table edge.

Color Placement Guide

  • Face base: cream, with a cream muzzle and cream lower face.
  • Left side of face: gray patch around the left eye and cheek.
  • Center forehead: cream blaze between the eyes.
  • Right side of face: orange patch around the right eye and upper cheek.
  • Top head: orange and gray patching meeting around the crown.
  • Ears: gray outer edge, orange or peach inner ear triangle.
  • Eyes: oversized blue eyes with black pupils and white highlights.
  • Glasses: pink heart-shaped frames crossing the bridge of the nose.

Head

Use cream as the main color. Work in the round from the top of the head downward. The head should be large and round, about one-third of the entire doll height. Add the gray and orange patches while knitting, then refine them later with duplicate stitch.

Begin the calico crown. Keep the first 20 sts mostly gray, the next 18 sts cream, and the final 26 sts orange. This creates the divided crown seen in the image. Carry colors loosely inside, or knit the head in cream and duplicate stitch the patches later.

  1. Rnds 15-18: k64, following gray over sts 1-20, cream over sts 21-38, orange over sts 39-64.
  2. Rnds 19-22: k64, shift gray inward by 2 sts each round and let orange cover the right forehead area.
  3. Rnds 23-26: k64, place gray over sts 1-18, cream over sts 19-36, orange over sts 37-56, cream over sts 57-64.
  4. Rnds 27-30: k64, keeping the lower face mostly cream from front center down.
  5. Rnd 31: k6, k2tog; repeat around. 56 sts.
  6. Rnd 32: k all sts.
  7. Rnd 33: k5, k2tog; repeat around. 48 sts.
  8. Rnd 34: k all sts.
  9. Rnd 35: k4, k2tog; repeat around. 40 sts.

Stuff the head firmly before the opening becomes small. Shape the lower face into a soft rounded cheek area. The face should be wider than the neck, with the muzzle placed low and centered.

  1. Rnd 36: k3, k2tog; repeat around. 32 sts.
  2. Rnd 37: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 38: k2, k2tog; repeat around. 24 sts.
  4. Rnd 39: k1, k2tog; repeat around. 16 sts.
  5. Rnd 40: k2tog around. 8 sts.
  6. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and secure.

Muzzle

The muzzle is a small cream oval made of two soft cheek bumps joined at the center. It sits low on the face, just below the glasses, and should create the gentle cat expression shown in the image.

Left Muzzle Pad

  1. CO 6 sts in cream. Work flat.
  2. Row 1: k all sts.
  3. Row 2: p all sts.
  4. Row 3: k1, inc, k2, inc, k1. 8 sts.
  5. Row 4: p all sts.
  6. Row 5: k1, inc, k4, inc, k1. 10 sts.
  7. Rows 6-8: work St st.
  8. Row 9: k1, k2tog, k4, ssk, k1. 8 sts.
  9. Row 10: p all sts.
  10. Row 11: k1, k2tog, k2, ssk, k1. 6 sts.
  11. BO, leaving a long tail.

Right Muzzle Pad

Make a second piece the same way. Sew the two pads together at one narrow edge. Lightly stuff each pad and sew them to the lower center of the face. The joined center line should sit directly below the nose.

Nose and Mouth

  • Using peach yarn, embroider a small vertical oval nose over 5 horizontal wraps at the top center of the muzzle.
  • Make one vertical brown stitch from the bottom of the nose to the center split between muzzle pads.
  • Make two soft curved mouth lines from that center point, one curving left and one curving right.
  • Keep the mouth delicate and symmetrical so the face remains gentle and toy-like.

Ears

The ears are tall triangles, slightly rounded at the base. They sit high on the head and angle outward. Make two outer ears and two inner ear inserts. The outer edge should look gray on both ears, with peachy-orange inner centers.

Outer Ear, Make 2

  1. CO 18 sts in gray. Work flat.
  2. Rows 1-4: k all sts for a garter edge.
  3. Row 5: k all sts.

  6. Row 6: p all sts.
  7. Continue decreasing on RS rows until 2 sts remain.
  8. Next row: p2tog. Fasten off.

Sew one inner ear to each outer ear, leaving the gray border visible. Pin ears to the top sides of the head, angled about 35 degrees outward. Sew securely around the base, then pinch the lower corners slightly forward to create the alert cat shape.

Body

The body is shorter than the head and hidden partly by the overalls. Use cream for the sweater upper body and dark denim blue for the lower overall section. The neck has a ribbed turtleneck that sits directly under the large head.

  1. CO 32 sts in cream. Join to work in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-8: work 1×1 rib for the tall sweater neck.
  3. Rnd 9: k all sts.
  4. Rnd 10: k3, inc; repeat around. 40 sts.

  11. Rnd 36: k all sts.
  12. Rnd 37: k3, k2tog; repeat around. 32 sts.
  13. Stuff body medium-firm.
  14. Rnd 38: k2, k2tog; repeat around. 24 sts.
  15. Rnd 39: k1, k2tog; repeat around. 16 sts.
  16. Rnd 40: k2tog around. 8 sts.
  17. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull closed, and secure.

Sweater Texture and Daisy Details

The cream sweater in the image has vertical rib texture and small daisies on the sleeves and chest. After knitting the body, use cream yarn to embroider a few vertical duplicate-stitch columns over the sweater. Keep them soft so the sweater still looks knitted, not stiff.

  • For the chest daisy, sew 6 white lazy-daisy petals around one yellow French knot or small yellow stitch.
  • Place the chest daisy at the upper center, just above the overall bib.
  • Add one daisy to each sleeve near the outer upper arm.
  • Add tiny yellow centers first, then stitch white petals evenly around them.

Overall Bib

The overalls are dark blue and sit high on the body with a square bib, two straps, rolled cuffs, and a small front pocket. Work the bib flat and sew it to the front of the body over the blue lower section.

  1. CO 18 sts in dark denim blue.
  2. Rows 1-4: k all sts for bottom garter border.
  3. Rows 5-16: work St st, slipping first st of every row for neat edges.
  4. Row 17: k2, ssk, k10, k2tog, k2. 16 sts.
  5. Row 18: p all sts.
  6. Rows 19-22: work St st.
  7. Rows 23-24: k all sts.
  8. BO all sts.

Overall Front Pocket

  1. CO 10 sts in dark denim blue.
  2. Rows 1-2: k all sts.
  3. Rows 3-8: work St st.
  4. Row 9: k all sts.
  5. BO.

Sew the pocket to the center of the bib, leaving the top edge slightly open. Add two vertical embroidery lines in a slightly lighter blue if desired. Sew the bib to the front body, with the lower edge blending into the blue pants section.

Overall Straps

The straps run from the top of the bib over the shoulders and attach at the back. They are narrow, dark blue, and each front strap has a small brown button.

  1. CO 5 sts in dark denim blue.
  2. Rows 1-34: k all sts.
  3. BO. Make a second strap the same way.
  • Sew one end of each strap to the top corners of the bib.
  • Cross the straps slightly over the shoulders or keep them straight, depending on head placement.
  • Sew the back ends to the upper back of the blue overall section.
  • Attach one small brown button to each front strap near the bib corner.

Arms

The arms are cream sweater sleeves with small cream paw tips. They hang at the sides and should reach just below the upper edge of the overalls. Keep the arms slim and lightly stuffed.

  1. CO 16 sts in cream. Join to work in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-4: work 1×1 rib.
  3. Rnds 5-20: k16.
  4. Rnd 21: k6, k2tog, k6, k2tog. 14 sts.
  5. Rnds 22-26: k14.
  6. Rnd 27: k5, k2tog, k5, k2tog. 12 sts.

  8. Stuff lightly.
  9. Rnd 32: k2tog around. 6 sts.
  10. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed.
  11. Make second arm the same way.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Add sleeve daisies before sewing the arms on. Place one small daisy on the outside of each sleeve, matching the image. Sew arms to the body just below the neck ribbing, angled slightly downward.

Legs

The legs are cream at the top, striped orange and yellow socks in the middle, and orange shoes at the bottom. They are made separately and attached to the lower front of the body so the doll can sit with dangling feet.

Upper Leg, Make 2

  1. CO 18 sts in cream. Join to work in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-10: k18.
  3. Change to light gray.
  4. Rnds 11-14: k18 for the ankle cuff peeking below the overalls.
  5. Do not bind off. Continue into sock.

Striped Sock, Continue on Each Leg

  1. Change to orange.
  2. Rnds 15-18: k18.
  3. Change to golden yellow.
  4. Rnds 19-21: k18.
  5. Change to orange.
  6. Rnds 22-25: k18.
  7. Change to golden yellow.
  8. Rnds 26-28: k18.
  9. Change to orange.
  10. Rnds 29-31: k18.

The socks should show clear orange and yellow bands, like the bright garden socks in the picture. Keep tension even at color changes and weave yarn tails inside carefully so the leg stays smooth.

Shoes

The shoes are rounded orange toes with tan uppers, a soft pale sole, pink edging, and a small daisy on each outer side. Work each shoe from toe to ankle, then sew it to the sock if needed.

Shoe Toe, Make 2

  1. CO 8 sts in orange. Join to work in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: inc in every st around. 16 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: k all sts.
  5. Rnd 4: k1, inc; repeat around. 24 sts.
  6. Rnds 5-9: k24.
  7. Change to tan.
  8. Rnds 10-14: k24.
  9. Rnd 15: k4, k2tog; repeat around. 20 sts.
  10. Rnd 16: k20.
  11. BO loosely.

Shoe Sole and Pink Edge

  1. CO 18 sts in cream or pale beige.
  2. Rows 1-2: k all sts.
  3. Row 3: inc, k16, inc. 20 sts.
  4. Rows 4-8: k all sts.
  5. Row 9: k2tog, k16, ssk. 18 sts.
  6. BO.
  7. Using pink yarn, work a simple embroidered chain around the lower shoe edge.

Sew the sole under the shoe. Add a small tan strap across the top: CO 5 sts, knit 16 rows, BO, then sew across the shoe. Add a tiny white daisy with a yellow center to the outer side of each shoe.

Denim Pant Legs and Rolled Cuffs

The overalls have loose blue pant legs with rolled cuffs above the socks. These are added as separate knitted tubes and sewn around the tops of the legs for the soft, baggy look.

  1. CO 24 sts in dark denim blue. Join to work in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-10: k24.
  3. Rnds 11-14: p24 to create a rolled-looking cuff ridge.
  4. BO loosely.
  5. Make second cuff the same way.

Slide each blue pant leg over the cream upper leg, with the purl cuff facing outward near the sock. Sew the top of each pant leg to the body and secure the lower cuff loosely so the socks remain visible.

Eyes

The eyes are very large, round, glossy-looking, and bright blue. They sit on either side of the cream blaze, slightly above the muzzle. You may embroider them fully for a soft toy-safe finish.

  1. Using black yarn, embroider a round pupil about 7 stitches wide.
  2. Surround it with sky blue satin stitches, making the iris about 11 stitches wide.
  3. Add darker blue stitches around the outer iris for depth.
  4. Add two white highlight stitches near the upper right of each eye.
  5. Outline each eye lightly in black or dark gray.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Place the left eye over the gray face patch and the right eye over the orange face patch. The eyes should be even in height. The heart glasses will frame them, so keep the eyes bold and slightly oversized.

Pink Heart Glasses

The glasses are one of the most important details. They are soft pink heart-shaped frames with a small bridge over the nose. The easiest knitted method is a narrow I-cord shaped into two hearts and sewn in place. Optional craft wire can be inserted into the I-cord to hold the heart shape.

Heart Frame I-Cord

  1. CO 3 sts in pink.
  2. Row 1: k3, do not turn. Slide sts to the other end of the needle.
  3. Repeat Row 1 until the cord measures 7 inches for the left heart.
  4. BO, leaving a long tail.
  5. Make a second 7-inch I-cord for the right heart.

Bridge and Side Loops

  1. CO 3 sts in pink.
  2. Work I-cord for 1 inch for the nose bridge.
  3. BO.
  4. CO 3 sts and work two tiny 1-inch I-cords for side hinges, if desired.

Shape each 7-inch cord into a heart with the point facing slightly downward and the top curves sitting above the eyes. Sew the center bridge between the hearts. Pin glasses on the face first, then sew lightly at the outer sides, inner bridge, and lower heart points.

Tail

The tail is not dominant in the front view, but a calico cat should have a small curved tail at the back or side. Make it cream with an orange tip and a gray patch near the base.

  1. CO 10 sts in cream. Join to work in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-10: k10 in cream.
  3. Rnds 11-16: k10 in gray.
  4. Rnds 17-24: k10 in orange.
  5. Stuff very lightly as you work.
  6. Rnd 25: k2tog around. 5 sts.
  7. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull closed.

Sew the tail to the back lower body, curving it gently to one side. Use a few hidden stitches to hold the curve. The tail should not interfere with the doll sitting upright.

Crossbody Strap

The tan strap crosses from one shoulder down to the opposite hip. It sits over the sweater and overalls, then connects to the small woven-style bag.

  1. CO 4 sts in tan.
  2. Rows 1-70: k all sts, or continue until the strap fits diagonally across your doll.
  3. BO.

Lay the strap from the cat’s left shoulder to the right hip, matching the image. Sew lightly at the shoulder and hip. Do not pull too tight, because the strap should look relaxed and handmade.

Tiny Tan Bag

The bag is a small square pouch in warm tan yarn. It hangs at the cat’s right side and has a flap with a tiny red mushroom charm. Work it flat, fold, and seam the sides.

  1. CO 16 sts in tan.
  2. Rows 1-4: k all sts.
  3. Rows 5-20: work St st.
  4. Rows 21-24: k all sts for the fold line.
  5. Rows 25-34: work St st for flap.
  6. Row 35: k2, ssk, k8, k2tog, k2. 14 sts.
  7. Row 36: p all sts.
  8. Row 37: k2, ssk, k6, k2tog, k2. 12 sts.
  9. Row 38: p all sts.
  10. BO.

Fold the lower section up to form the pouch. Sew side seams. Fold the flap down. Sew the bag to the end of the crossbody strap so it rests against the right hip.

Small Mushroom Charm on Bag

Stem

  1. CO 6 sts in cream.
  2. Rows 1-8: work St st.
  3. BO.
  4. Roll slightly and seam into a tiny stem.

Cap

  1. CO 10 sts in red.
  2. Row 1: k all sts.
  3. Row 2: p all sts.
  4. Row 3: k1, inc, k6, inc, k1. 12 sts.
  5. Row 4: p all sts.
  6. Row 5: k1, ssk, k6, k2tog, k1. 10 sts.
  7. Row 6: p all sts.
  8. BO.
  • Sew the red cap over the cream stem.
  • Embroider 4 tiny white spots on the cap.
  • Attach the mushroom charm to the front of the bag flap.

  6. Rnd 5: k all sts.
  7. Rnd 6: k2, inc; repeat around. 32 sts.
  8. Rnds 7-15: k32.
  9. BO loosely.

  5. Rnd 9: p all sts for a brim ridge.
  6. Rnd 10: k all sts.
  7. BO loosely.

Sew the crown to the center of the brim. For the floral band, make a narrow strip: CO 4 sts in cream, knit 42 rows, BO. Embroider tiny pink roses and green leaves along the strip, then sew it around the crown.

Garden Apples

The small apples sit to the side as props. Make one red apple and one orange-yellow apple, each with a brown stem and green leaf. They should be about 1 inch tall.

Apple Body, Make 2

  1. CO 6 sts in red or orange-yellow. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: inc in every st. 12 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: k1, inc; repeat around. 18 sts.

  5. Rnd 9: k1, k2tog; repeat around. 12 sts.
  6. Stuff lightly.
  7. Rnd 10: k2tog around. 6 sts.
  8. Thread through sts and pull closed.
  • Pull a strand from top to bottom and back up to indent the apple center.
  • For the stem, CO 3 sts in brown and work I-cord for 5 rows.
  • For the leaf, CO 5 sts in green, k1 row, then BO.
  • Sew stem and leaf to the top of each apple.

Woodland Mushroom Prop

The mushroom prop has a white stem and a brown cap with white spots. It sits near the apples and reinforces the garden woodland theme.

Mushroom Stem

  1. CO 10 sts in cream. Join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-12: k10.
  3. Rnd 13: k2tog around. 5 sts.
  4. Stuff lightly and pull closed.

Mushroom Cap

  1. CO 8 sts in brown. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: inc in every st. 16 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: k all sts.
  4. Rnd 3: k1, inc; repeat around. 24 sts.
  5. Rnds 4-7: k24.
  6. Rnd 8: k2, k2tog; repeat around. 18 sts.
  7. BO.

Sew the cap to the stem. Embroider small white spots across the cap. Keep the cap rounded and slightly wider than the stem, matching the small mushroom beside the cat.

Calico Patch Refinement

After the head is assembled, refine the calico markings with duplicate stitch. On the left side, add gray around the eye and cheek. On the right side, add orange around the eye and ear base. Leave the muzzle and lower face cream.

  • Gray patch: begin above the left eye, curve around the side of the face, and taper near the cheek.
  • Orange patch: cover the right forehead, right eye area, and part of the upper cheek.
  • Cream blaze: keep a vertical cream stripe between the eyes and down toward the nose.
  • Use soft uneven edges, because real calico markings should not look like perfect blocks.

Daisy Motifs for Overalls and Outfit

The image shows sweet white daisies with yellow centers on the sweater, shoes, and overall area. Use the same small flower method throughout the doll so all details look coordinated.

  1. Make the yellow center first with one small knot or 2 tiny satin stitches.
  2. Make 5 or 6 white petals around the center.
  3. Each petal should be about 2 stitches long.
  4. Keep flowers small so they do not overwhelm the knitted fabric.
  5. Add one chest daisy, one on each sleeve, and one on each shoe.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew the muzzle pads to the lower center of the face.
  2. Embroider the nose, mouth, and large blue eyes.
  3. Shape and attach the pink heart glasses around the eyes.
  4. Sew ears to the head at a slight outward angle.
  5. Sew the head to the ribbed neck, checking that the face looks forward.
  6. Sew legs to the lower front of the body in a seated position.
  7. Add denim pant legs and cuffs over the upper legs.
  8. Sew arms to the sides below the neck.
  9. Attach bib, pocket, straps, and buttons to form the overalls.
  10. Add the crossbody strap, bag, and mushroom charm.
  11. Arrange hat, apples, and mushroom prop beside the finished cat.

Shaping Tips

For the most accurate silhouette, keep the head very round and slightly larger than the body. The body should be compact, with the overalls making the lower half look fuller. The legs should hang forward naturally, and the arms should rest at the sides without sticking outward.

When sewing the head to the body, use many small stitches around the neck. The glasses and eyes add visual weight to the face, so the neck join must be firm. If the head tilts too much, add extra stitches at the back of the neck.

Optional Knit Buttons Instead of Real Buttons

If you prefer an all-yarn finish, make two tiny brown knitted buttons. CO 6 sts in brown, knit 2 rows, then thread the yarn through all stitches and pull into a small circle. Sew one button to each overall strap.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face from the front before tying off embroidery ends. The eyes should be level, the nose centered, and the heart glasses balanced over both eyes. Add a few tiny gray or orange duplicate stitches near the forehead if the calico patches need a softer handmade edge.

Sew all loose ends into the inside of the toy whenever possible. Gently pinch the ears and cheeks into shape with your fingers. Place the bag strap diagonally across the body and secure it with hidden stitches so it stays in position during display.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if using buttons, wire, or delicate embroidered details.
  • Let the toy air dry flat on a towel.
  • Reshape the ears, glasses, shoes, and hat while still slightly damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Head is round, firm, and larger than the body.
  • Gray patch is on the cat’s left side and orange patch is on the cat’s right side.
  • Pink heart glasses frame both eyes evenly.
  • Overalls have bib, pocket, straps, buttons, and rolled cuffs.
  • Sweater, sleeves, and shoes include tiny daisy details.
  • Socks show orange and yellow stripes.
  • Bag, mushroom charm, straw hat, apples, and mushroom prop are complete.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Keep the finished cat away from direct sunlight for long periods, especially if you used cotton yarn in bright orange, pink, and blue. Store it in a clean dry place with the glasses and hat supported so they do not flatten.

For long-term display, gently dust the toy with a soft brush. Avoid pulling on the bag strap or glasses. If the overalls flatten over time, lightly fluff the body and pant legs with your fingers to restore the seated shape.
