Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is written for a soft knitted art doll worked mostly in the round on double-pointed needles or with the magic loop method. Small pieces such as the hat brim, ears, bag flap, flowers, and garden tools are worked flat, then seamed or sewn into place.
The puppy in the reference image has a large rounded head, a smaller seated body, short rounded arms, straight legs, red mushroom-style shoes, textured brown overalls, and many embroidered garden details. Keep your stuffing firm but not hard so the toy keeps its rounded, handmade shape.
- Finished size: about 12 in tall from shoe sole to top of head, not including floppy ear height.
- Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate.
- Main method: knit in the round, increase, decrease, mattress stitch, duplicate stitch, and embroidery.
- Gauge: 7 sts and 10 rnds = 1 in in stockinette with worsted-weight yarn on US 3 needles.
- Firm fabric note: use needles smaller than the yarn label recommends so stuffing does not show through.
Materials
- Worsted-weight yarn in cream white, warm orange, deep teal, medium blue, light cream, brown, red, black, yellow, tan straw, purple, green, carrot orange, flower red, flower yellow, flower pink, and small gray.
- US 3 knitting needles for working small tubes in the round.
- US 2 needles for tiny accessories and tighter embroidered details.
- Two 16 mm glossy brown safety eyes or sew-on toy eyes.
- Polyester fiberfill.
- Tapestry needle.
- Stitch markers.
- Two small wooden buttons for the overall bib straps.
- Black embroidery floss for mouth lines and shoe gills.
- Small amount of white felt or duplicate-stitch yarn for eye highlights if safety eyes are not glossy.
- Optional tiny silver charm or gray knitted cup for the bag side.

Important Construction Notes
The head uses simple intarsia-style color changes in the round. For a clean beginner-friendly version, knit the whole head in cream white, then duplicate-stitch the orange and teal patches afterward. For the closest look, follow the color placement notes round by round and twist yarns at color joins.
The head is intentionally large compared with the body. The body should look like it is tucked inside the overalls, while the arms sit slightly forward and downward. The ears attach high on the head and fold outward like soft triangular flaps.
- Stuff the head more firmly than the limbs.
- Stuff the arms lightly so they hang naturally.
- Use brown yarn ends to gently cinch the overall cuffs for the gathered look.
- Place the bag strap diagonally from the puppy’s left shoulder to the right hip.
- Sew the straw hat separately so it can sit beside the puppy, matching the image.
Head
Work the head in the round from the neck upward. Use cream white as the base color. The orange patch covers the puppy’s upper viewer-left side, and the teal patch covers the viewer-right cheek and eye area. The white muzzle remains broad and rounded in the center.

- Add a smaller black center using duplicate stitch or embroidery.
- Add one white highlight stitch at the upper outer side of each eye.
- Sew the eyes firmly before attaching the muzzle, or install safety eyes before final head stuffing.
Colored Dots on the Ears
The dotted ears are important to the patchwork style. Use tiny duplicate stitches rather than bulky knots so the ears stay soft and floppy. Scatter the dots randomly but keep them visible from the front.
- On the teal ear, place 8 dots total: 2 red, 2 yellow, 1 orange, 1 blue, 1 purple, and 1 pink.
- On the purple ear, place 9 dots total: 2 yellow, 2 orange, 2 blue, 1 green, 1 pink, and 1 red.
- Each dot should cover about 1 to 2 knitted sts.
- Do not over-stuff the ears. They should remain flat.
Patchwork Face Refinement
After the head is stuffed, the patches may look uneven. This is normal. Use duplicate stitch to smooth the orange and teal edges. The cream white center should remain wide enough to frame the muzzle and separate the two colored patches.
- Add orange duplicate stitches around the viewer-left eye if any cream stitches interrupt the patch.
- Add teal duplicate stitches around the viewer-right eye and cheek.
- Keep a curved white strip between the patches from forehead to muzzle.
- Use a tapestry needle to gently tug color joins toward the inside.
Putting Clothes on the Puppy
Before final assembly, slide the brown overalls over the body and legs. The legs should come through the pant openings, leaving white lower legs visible. The sweater sleeves should sit outside the overall straps.
- Sew both white legs to the lower body first, spacing them about 1 in apart.
- Pull the overall pant legs over the knitted legs and secure the cuffs with small hidden stitches.
- Wrap the overall body around the puppy’s torso and sew the center back seam.
- Bring the bib to the front and sew it flat against the chest.
- Attach straps over the shoulders and sew the buttons at the top corners of the bib.
- Place the yellow bag strap over one shoulder after the overalls are secure.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
- Sew the head to the body using the long body tail. Stitch around the neck twice so the large head is stable.
- Attach the arms to the sides of the upper body, just under the striped collar.
- Sew the teal ear to the upper viewer-left side of the head and the purple ear to the upper viewer-right side.
- Shape the ears with a few hidden stitches so they fold outward like soft puppy ears.
- Sew the muzzle to the face and add the black nose and embroidered mouth.
- Attach the yellow bag diagonally across the body, letting the bag rest near the puppy’s right hip.
- Place the straw hat next to the puppy as a separate accessory, or lightly tack it to one side if you prefer a fixed display.
- Arrange the acorns and trowel beside the feet for the garden scene.
Care Notes
- Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if using safety eyes, buttons, or tiny charms.
- Let the doll air dry flat on a towel.
- Reshape the ears, hat brim, and bag while damp.
- Keep away from pets and very young children if small buttons or charms are attached.

- The ears are triangular, floppy, and decorated with colorful dots.
- The sweater sleeves show clear blue and cream stripes.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the finished puppy in a dry place away from direct sunlight so the orange, teal, red, and yellow yarns stay bright. If dust collects on the toy, use a soft dry brush and work gently around the embroidery, buttons, eyes, and bag strap.
For long-term display, support the head from behind or place the puppy slightly reclined, as shown in the image. Keep the small acorns, trowel, and straw hat in a shallow box or display tray when not in use so the tiny pieces do not get lost.
