Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms. The puppy is worked as a soft stuffed toy with separate pieces sewn together. The body, head, arms, legs, ears, clothing, bag, hat, and flower pots are all knitted separately so the shape matches the photo as closely as possible.

The finished puppy measures about 12 inches tall from the top of the head to the bottom of the shoes when made with DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles. The shape is rounded, plush, and slightly oversized in the head, with a small dress body and short dangling legs.

  • Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate
  • Finished size: Approximately 12 inches tall
  • Construction: Mostly knitted flat, seamed, stuffed, and assembled
  • Main fabric: Firm stockinette stitch for toy shaping
  • Clothing style: Separate cardigan, dress skirt, bag, shoes, hat, and bow

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in cream white for muzzle, lower face, dress, legs, paws, and hat stripe
  • DK weight yarn in warm tan for head and upper face
  • DK weight yarn in dark brown for floppy ears, shoe straps, shoe soles, and flower-pot soil
  • DK weight yarn in sailor blue for cardigan, bow, bag, hat, and shoe details
  • Small amounts of pale pink yarn for tongue, cheeks, and flower petals
  • Small amounts of yellow yarn for flower centers
  • Small amounts of green yarn for flower stems and leaves
  • Small amounts of terracotta yarn for one flower pot
  • Small amounts of beige yarn for one flower pot
  • Small amount of peach yarn for starfish applique
  • Small amount of black yarn for nose, smile, closed eyes, paw lines, and anchor embroidery
  • 2.75 mm knitting needles
  • 2.5 mm knitting needles for smaller details
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • 4 small tan buttons for cardigan front
  • 2 tiny white buttons or knitted dots for shoe flowers
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers
  • Removable row markers
  • Scissors
  • Optional pipe cleaner or floral wire for flower stems

Gauge

Gauge: 28 stitches and 36 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch using 2.75 mm needles. Gauge is not decorative here; it controls the firmness of the toy. If your fabric looks loose after stuffing, use a smaller needle.

The knitted fabric should be tight enough that stuffing does not show through. For a smooth photo-like finish, stuff gradually and shape the pieces with your fingers as you sew.

Helpful Notes Before You Start

This puppy is designed with a large round head, narrow neck, softly rounded body, flared dress skirt, and short straight legs. The cardigan sits open at the front, with blue bands and white stripes. The ears hang downward beside the face and are sewn slightly behind the head curve.

For the neatest result, use mattress stitch for side seams and small whip stitches for appliques. When changing colors on the face, twist yarns together on the wrong side to avoid holes. Do not pull the color joins too tightly because the face should stay round.

  • Work the toy pieces firmly.
  • Stuff the head more firmly than the arms.
  • Stuff the ears lightly or leave them almost flat.
  • Block the dress skirt gently so it flares outward.
  • Embroider all face details after the head is stuffed.

  4. BO all sts.
  5. Make six petals for each flower.
  6. With yellow yarn, CO 5 sts, knit 2 rows, and BO for the center.
  7. Sew six petals around the yellow center.
  8. Sew the flower head to the top of the green stem.

Insert each finished flower into a pot and stitch it to the brown soil so it stands upright. Place the pots beside the puppy to complete the garden scene.

Facial Embroidery

The face gives the toy its cheerful expression. Use small, controlled stitches and keep the left and right sides balanced.

  1. Sew the black nose to the upper muzzle.
  2. Using black yarn, stitch a short vertical line from the nose down to the top of the tongue.
  3. Stitch a curved smile from the lower center toward each cheek.
  4. Embroider two closed smiling eyes above the muzzle using curved black backstitches.
  5. Add one small eyebrow above each eye with a short slanted stitch.
  6. For each cheek, use pale pink yarn and make 5 to 7 soft horizontal satin stitches.
  7. Sew the pink tongue below the smile line, centered under the muzzle.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the head firmly to the body, checking that the face points forward.
  2. Sew the ears to the sides of the head, slightly behind the face panel.
  3. Sew the bow on the upper left head area.
  4. Attach the arms to the body, angled downward so the paws show below the cardigan sleeves.
  5. Sew legs under the body and place the dress skirt over them.
  6. Add shoes to the feet and secure the straps.
  7. Dress the puppy in the cardigan and tack it in place at shoulders and side seams.
  8. Add cardigan buttons and pocket embroidery.
  9. Place the crossbody bag diagonally across the front.
  10. Set the sunhat and flower pots beside the puppy for display.

Before finishing, check the face from the front. The white blaze should be centered, the nose should sit above the rounded muzzle, and the tongue should hang evenly. Tiny changes in embroidery can make a big difference, so adjust before knotting the final threads.

Care Notes

  • Do not machine wash if buttons, embroidery, or wired flower stems are attached.
  • Press out extra moisture with a towel instead of wringing.
  • Let the toy air dry flat in a shaded place.
  • Reshape the ears, bow, dress skirt, hat brim, and bag while damp.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, store the puppy upright or lying flat with the ears and bow supported. Avoid placing heavy items on top of the doll because the head, hat brim, bag, and flower petals can flatten over time.

Keep the finished piece away from direct sunlight for long periods, especially the blue cardigan, pink cheeks, and flower petals. If dust collects, use a soft dry brush and sweep lightly in the direction of the knitted stitches.

If the toy is made for a child, replace small buttons with embroidered button shapes and avoid wire in the flower stems. Check all seams regularly, especially the ears, shoes, bag strap, and cardigan buttons.
