This woodland crochet diorama creates a two-story stump-shaped book nook with a mossy grass base, rounded bark walls, an upstairs bed, a balcony rail, a lower reading room, bookshelves, mushrooms, an outside staircase, two badgers, and a hedgehog serving tea. The finished piece is designed as a cozy miniature library scene with textured bark, tiny books, a green blanket, a small table, cups, teapot, flowers, vines, and a front sign that reads Badger & Hog’s Book Nook.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Gauge and Helpful Notes
Use tight stitches so the animals, mushrooms, furniture, and walls hold their shape. With the 3.0 mm hook, 6 sc and 6 rows should measure about 1 inch. Exact gauge is less important than matching all parts to each other.
The diorama is built like a firm open-front stump. The crochet pieces cover support panels. This keeps the book nook upright, while the soft crochet surface gives the handmade woodland texture seen in the image.
- Work amigurumi parts in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
- Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of each round.
- Stuff animal parts firmly but do not overstuff flat pieces.
- For flat panels, ch 1 and turn at the end of each row.
- For a photo-like result, keep colors muted and earthy rather than bright.
Support Pieces to Cut Before Assembly
Cut support pieces first so your crochet panels can be checked as you work. If your gauge is different, adjust by adding or removing rows, but keep the same shape and placement.

Assembling the Stump Structure

- Repeat this process for the left and right side wall supports.
- Sew the side walls to the back wall, forming a three-sided open box.
- Attach the roof panel across the top.
- Place the lower floor at the bottom inside the stump and sew it to the back and side walls.
- Place the upper floor halfway up the stump, about 5.75 inches from the bottom.
- Sew the upper floor firmly to the back and side walls.
- Sew the two front bark columns down the left and right front edges.
- Sew the top bark strip across the upper front opening.
- Sew the rounded front lower lip across the bottom front edge.
- Attach the whole stump to the grass base, leaving extra grass visible around all sides.
Interior Placement

- Fill the lower shelf with tall and short books, alternating colors and heights.
- Place the armchair on the lower left side.
- Seat the lower badger in the armchair and tack the body to the chair with hidden stitches.

- Attach the sign centered above the upper opening.
- Sew the picture frame above the upstairs bed.
- Add the side window on the visible side wall.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check that both badgers face forward and that the hedgehog looks toward the tea table. Add small black embroidery lines for mouths. Use short straight stitches for eyebrows, paw marks, and book page lines.
For the lower badger, add one short black line under the nose and two tiny side stitches for a gentle reading expression. For the hedgehog, embroider a small smiling mouth just below the muzzle.
- Brush the hedgehog spikes gently with your fingers only.
- Secure all loose books with small stitches or fabric glue.
- Make sure the balcony rail is straight and firmly attached.
- Shape the mushrooms so their caps tilt naturally.
- Use extra moss clumps to hide visible seams.
Care Notes
Keep the finished book nook dry and away from strong direct sunlight. Because the structure contains support pieces, do not machine wash it. Treat it as a decorative handmade display piece.
- Dust gently with a soft dry brush.
- Do not pull on the staircase, balcony rail, vines, or tiny books.
- Store upright in a clean box when not displayed.
- Avoid placing heavy objects on top of the roof.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The stump sits flat on the green oval base.
- The lower room has the chair, badger, book, table, cups, teapot, bookshelf, and hedgehog.
- The upper room has the bed, small badger, blanket, pink book, picture frame, shelf, and balcony rail.
- The exterior has the right-side staircase, mushrooms, moss, vines, side window, and front sign.
- All animal faces have eyes, noses, mouths, and correct black badger patches.
- All loose ends are woven in or hidden inside the structure.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
To clean the diorama, hold it from the base and lightly dust from the top down. Use a small makeup brush or soft paintbrush around the bookshelves, animals, mushrooms, and railings.
If a spot appears on the yarn, dab it gently with a barely damp cloth. Do not soak the area, because water can soften the inner support and change the shape of the walls.
For long-term storage, wrap the piece loosely in acid-free tissue or plain white cotton fabric. Keep it in a rigid box so the balcony, staircase, and roof moss are not pressed flat.
Refresh the shape by gently pinching the bark columns, smoothing the blanket, and fluffing the hedgehog spikes. The book nook should remain firm, rounded, and cozy like a tiny woodland library inside a tree stump.
