This cheerful crochet diorama features a round grassy garden base, a large red-and-white spotted mushroom house, smaller mushroom trees, tiny pond areas, cobblestone paths, garden vegetables, flowers, a hammock, a fishing frog, and a standing gardener frog with overalls and a basket. The finished piece is a detailed woodland village scene designed as a display crochet project.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Finished Size
- Full diorama base: about 12–13 in / 30–33 cm across.
- Main mushroom house: about 7 in / 18 cm tall, or 9 in / 23 cm including chimney.
- Standing frog gardener: about 3.5 in / 9 cm tall.
- Sitting fishing frog: about 2.5 in / 6.5 cm tall when seated.
- Tall side mushrooms: 3.5–5 in / 9–13 cm tall.
Skill Level
This pattern is best for an adventurous beginner to intermediate crocheter. Most parts use single crochet in continuous rounds, simple shaping, small appliques, and hand sewing. The tiny vegetables, flowers, stones, and window details require patience, but each part is made with basic stitches.
Materials
- Worsted weight cotton or acrylic yarn for the grassy base: moss green.
- DK or sport weight cotton yarn for small details: red, cream, white, beige, brown, tan, light blue, bright green, dark green, denim blue, orange, yellow, pink, gray, and soft sage.
- 4 mm crochet hook for the base.
- 2.5 mm or 2.75 mm crochet hook for the house, frogs, mushrooms, and details.
- Polyester fiberfill.
- Yarn needle.
- Stitch markers.
- Small black safety eyes, 4–6 mm, or black embroidery thread.
- Thin cardboard or plastic canvas for stabilizing the mushroom house and base.
- Optional floral wire or pipe cleaner for the chimney curve, hammock ropes, and fishing rod.
- Fabric glue is optional, but sewing is recommended for the strongest finish.
Abbreviations in US Terms
- MR: magic ring
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
- dec: invisible single crochet decrease
- BLO: back loops only
- FLO: front loops only
- FO: fasten off
- R: round or row
- st / sts: stitch / stitches
Gauge and Construction Notes
For the base, use a firm but flexible gauge of about 5 sc and 5 rounds per 1 in / 2.5 cm with worsted yarn and a 4 mm hook. For the smaller pieces, use a tight amigurumi gauge with a 2.5 mm or 2.75 mm hook so stuffing does not show.
Work most amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds. Do not join unless the instruction says to join. Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round. Stuff pieces firmly, but do not overstuff flat pieces such as the mushroom cap underside, ponds, stones, or garden bed.
Color Placement Guide
- Main base: moss green with slightly raised edging.
- Main mushroom house stem: warm cream or ivory.
- Main mushroom cap: deep red with white raised spots.
- Door and window frames: medium brown and tan.
- Ponds: clear light blue with soft blue edging.
- Path: cream, beige, tan, and gray stones.
- Frogs: bright green bodies with darker green mouths and black eyes.
- Standing frog outfit: denim blue overalls.
- Sitting frog outfit: blue striped shirt or blue belly band.
Round Grassy Diorama Base
This large round base supports the whole mushroom village. It should be firm enough to hold the mushroom house upright. For extra stability, cut a circle of cardboard or plastic canvas about 11.5 in / 29 cm wide and sew or glue it under the crochet base after all pieces are attached.

Grass Texture Stitches
Use scraps of light green, dark green, and sage yarn to add short grass tufts around the base. Insert the hook into random stitches, pull up a loop, ch 3, sl st back into the same stitch. Make clusters of 3–5 grass tufts around the mushroom stems, pond edges, garden bed, and path.
Main Mushroom House Stem
The central house is a tall cream mushroom stem with a wide bottom, a slightly narrowed middle, and a rounded top hidden under the red cap. Stuff the stem firmly and keep the bottom flat so it stands straight on the base.

Subtle Stem Shading
To copy the soft handmade texture in the photo, add a few vertical tan lines on the cream stem. Use tan yarn and a yarn needle. Make 6 long straight stitches from R10 to R26, spacing them unevenly so the house looks organic rather than perfectly striped.
Main Red Mushroom Cap
The cap is a wide red dome with a soft overhang. It should sit low over the cream stem, like a roof. The front edge slightly hides the top of the house, while the underside forms a pale cream band just below the red cap.

Main Cap White Spots
Make a mix of raised white circles. The photo shows large and small white spots scattered across the cap, with more visible spots on the front and right side. Make 5 large, 6 medium, and 5 small spots for the main cap.

Front Door and House Windows
The house front has a brown arched door, a round-top window above it, and two smaller side windows. All pieces are sewn onto the cream stem before the mushroom house is attached to the green base.

Final Diorama Layout
- Sew the main mushroom house slightly behind the center of the grassy base, leaving room for the path in front.
- Sew the red cap to the cream stem, then sew the cap underside to the stem top for strength.
- Attach the front door facing the front edge of the base.
- Sew the cobblestone path from the base edge to the door.
- Place the left pond on the front left side, just behind the standing frog.
- Place the right pond on the front right side, with the sitting frog on top.
- Sew the vegetable garden bed to the front left corner.
- Attach the standing frog beside the garden bed, facing slightly toward the house.
- Sew tall mushrooms around the house: one left, one right of the house, and one far right.
- Attach the hammock between two right-side tall mushrooms.
- Add small mushroom clusters around pond edges and the front right corner.
- Fill open spaces with flowers, pebbles, logs, grass tufts, and small leafy sprouts.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
After all large pieces are sewn down, check the viewing angle from the front. The door, standing frog, garden bed, path, and fishing frog should be clearly visible. Add final stitches only after the layout looks balanced.
- Embroider frog smiles with dark green yarn using one curved backstitch line.
- Add small cheek marks with pink yarn, one short stitch on each side of the mouth.
- Secure every mushroom cap with several stitches through the stem and cap underside.
- Tack the fishing rod to the frog’s hands and the pond surface so it does not move.
- Use extra green grass tufts to hide any visible sewing joins.
Care Notes
- This diorama is intended as a decorative display piece, not a toy for babies or pets.
- If using safety eyes, make sure they are fully locked before stuffing.
- Keep the piece away from moisture, direct sunlight, and dusty windowsills.
- Do not machine wash because the cardboard support and tiny sewn details may bend or loosen.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The main mushroom house stands straight and does not lean forward.
- The red cap has a soft dome shape with an even cream underside.
- White spots are scattered unevenly, not arranged in perfect rows.
- The cobblestone path reaches the door and curves naturally.
- Both frogs have visible raised eyes, smiles, and stable body positions.
- The hammock is attached securely between the tall mushrooms.
- Small mushrooms, flowers, stones, vegetables, and logs fill the empty spaces.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
To clean the finished frog garden mushroom village, use a soft makeup brush or clean paintbrush to remove dust from the mushroom caps, flowers, and stones. Brush gently in one direction so the surface fibers stay neat.
For small stains, lightly dampen a white cloth with cool water and dab the area. Do not rub. Let the piece air dry completely on a towel. Store it in a breathable box with tissue paper around the tall mushrooms and chimney to protect their shape.
