This cheerful crochet Road Runner gardener is designed with a tall teal-blue head and neck, sleepy embroidered eyes behind black glasses, a long golden beak, blue overalls, a white shirt, brown wings, orange legs, flower sandals, a garden basket, watering can, straw hat, and a cream market bag that says “Community Garden.”
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Skill Level
Intermediate amigurumi. The body is beginner-friendly, but the shaped beak, glasses, overalls, long legs, tote bag, and small garden accessories need careful counting and neat assembly.

Important Pattern Notes
Work the amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join. Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of every round. Stuff firmly enough to hold the tall shape, but do not overstuff the neck because it should remain slim and straight.
The Road Runner in the photo has a long, elegant bird shape. The head is rounded and tall, the neck is narrow, the body is pear-shaped, and the legs hang straight from the picnic bench pose. Keep the body slightly softer than the head so the overalls sit naturally.
The overalls are worked as a separate denim-blue garment over the white shirt and teal body. This makes the raised bib, pocket, shoulder straps, rolled cuffs, yellow buttons, and flower details look more dimensional like the image.
Color Placement Guide
- Teal blue: head, neck, upper body, tail feathers, and small head tufts.
- Golden yellow: long beak, overalls flower centers, and round buttons.
- White: shirt, daisy petals, eye whites, and sandal flowers.
- Denim blue: overalls, bib, front pocket, shorts cuffs, and tail accent shadows.
- Warm brown: arms or folded wings hanging beside body.
- Orange-red: long legs and feet.
- Cream and beige: market bag, basket, sandals, straw hat, and bag handles.
- Black: glasses, eyelids, sleepy pupils, and market bag words.
Head
Use teal blue yarn and the 2.25 mm hook. The head is a tall oval with a slightly narrower lower section where the beak and neck meet. Stuff gradually as you work.

Before attaching the head, lightly shape the face with your fingers. The front should have a soft downward tilt for the sleepy expression. Place the widest part of the head slightly above the glasses line.
Head Feather Tufts
The photo shows small upright blue feather strands on top of the head. Make five tufts in teal blue using the 2.00 mm hook.
- Short tuft: ch 7, sl st in second ch from hook, sl st 5. FO with a sewing tail.
- Medium tuft, make 2: ch 9, sl st in second ch from hook, sl st 7. FO with a sewing tail.
- Tall tuft, make 2: ch 11, sl st in second ch from hook, sl st 9. FO with a sewing tail.
Sew the tufts to the top front-left crown between R2 and R5 of the head. Angle them outward like soft crochet feathers, with the tallest pieces leaning slightly backward.
Long Neck
Use teal blue yarn. The neck is narrow, straight, and about the same width all the way down. Stuff with small pieces of fiberfill every few rounds to avoid lumps.
- R1: MR, 8 sc. 8 sts.
- R2: inc in each st around. 16 sts.
- R3: sc 3, inc, repeat 4 times. 20 sts.
- R4 to R28: sc around. 20 sts for 25 rounds.

- R30: sc around. 18 sts.
Leave a long tail. Insert the top of the neck into the 12-st opening of the head. Pin the head so it tilts forward about 10 degrees. Sew around twice for strength.
Body Base
Use teal blue yarn for the hidden body base. The overalls cover most of this section, but the teal sides should show lightly near the arm seams and under the straps.
- R1: MR, 6 sc. 6 sts.
- R2: inc around. 12 sts.

- R27: sc 3, dec, repeat 6 times. 24 sts.
- R28: sc 2, dec, repeat 6 times. 18 sts.
Stuff the lower body round and full. Leave the top open. Sew the lower end of the neck centered into the body opening, with the head facing forward and the beak pointing over the chest.

Wrap the shirt around the upper body under the neck. The seam should sit at the back. Sew the back seam and top edge in place, keeping the front smooth.

Slide the overalls onto the body from the bottom before adding legs if possible. If the legs are already attached, stretch gently and pin the overalls in place. The top edge should sit just under the white shirt chest line.

Round Buttons
Make 4 in golden yellow.
- R1: MR, 6 sc, join with sl st. FO.
- Sew 2 buttons at the top bib corners where the straps meet.

- With black thread, stitch a small oval pupil low and slightly inward on each eye.
- Add a thin black sleepy line just above each pupil.
- Do not make the eyes fully open; the eyelids should cover about half the eye height.
Oversized Black Glasses
The glasses are a key feature. For a soft child-safe version, crochet the frames. For a display doll, wrap black thread around thin craft wire and stitch it firmly to the head.

- Sew the band around the crown at R8 height.

- Add tiny green straight stitches between flowers for leaves.
Optional Bench Display Placement
The photo shows the doll sitting on a rustic picnic bench with garden tools and bags around it. You do not need to crochet the bench, but the doll is shaped for a seated display. Let the legs hang downward and place the basket, watering can, tote, and hat around the doll for the same garden scene.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
- Sew the neck firmly into the body, then sew the head to the neck with the beak facing forward.
- Add the shirt first, then slide or sew the overalls over the body.
- Attach the bib, pocket, straps, cuffs, buttons, and yellow flowers.
- Sew the arms under the sleeves and let them hang straight beside the overalls.
- Sew the legs to the lower body, then attach the feet and sandals.
- Attach the tail feathers to the back right side, fanning them upward.
- Sew the beak across the lower face, then place the sleepy eyes above it.
- Attach the glasses carefully so the frame sits over both eyes and the bridge crosses above the beak.
- Add the head tufts and daisy last so they stay neat and dimensional.
For the sleepy Road Runner expression, keep both eyelids low and slightly uneven. Add a few short teal eyebrow lines above the glasses. Use tiny stitches only, because large facial embroidery can quickly change the personality of the doll.
Care Notes
- Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if you used wire glasses, cardboard in the tote, or stiffened accessories.
- Reshape the beak, glasses, hat brim, and tail feathers while damp.
- Dry flat in a shaded, airy place.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Keep the finished doll away from direct sunlight for long periods, especially if it is displayed outdoors for photos. Cotton yarn can fade, and the black glasses or embroidered lettering may lose sharpness if exposed to strong light every day.
To remove dust, use a soft makeup brush or clean paintbrush. Brush gently around the glasses, flower petals, tail feathers, and tote handles. For deeper cleaning, dab with a damp cloth instead of rubbing.
Store the doll upright or seated with tissue paper supporting the neck and tail. Do not press heavy items on top of the beak, glasses, hat brim, or market bag handles. These small shaped pieces keep the garden character recognizable.
