Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size and Construction Notes

This pattern makes one seated plush-style knitted tuxedo cat about 11 in / 28 cm tall when worked with DK yarn and 2.75 mm double-pointed needles. The body, head, arms, legs, tail, romper, accessories, hat, bag, blanket, apples, and sandals are all written as separate knitted pieces so the final toy can closely match the photographed design.

The main cat pieces are knitted in the round, stuffed firmly, and shaped with increases and decreases. The romper is worked as a removable-looking but sewn-on garment so it sits smoothly over the rounded body. The gingham squares are made with simple stranded colorwork and duplicate stitch.

  • Skill level: Adventurous beginner to intermediate.
  • Main techniques: Knitting in the round, short rows, increases, decreases, color changes, duplicate stitch, seaming, embroidery, i-cord, and mattress stitch.
  • Recommended finished pose: seated or gently leaning back, with legs forward, arms angled down, bag strap crossing from right shoulder to left hip, and picnic props placed around the cat.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in black, white, cream, lavender, light lavender, coral, tan, brown, rust rose, red, cherry red, green, yellow, blue, navy, and small amounts of peach.
  • 2.75 mm double-pointed needles or long circular needle for magic loop.
  • 2.25 mm needles for tighter accessories, sandals, apples, bag, and facial pieces.
  • Two 10 mm amber safety eyes or black safety eyes with amber felt or embroidered rings.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Scrap yarn or removable markers.
  • Small black embroidery thread for collar dots and eye highlights.
  • Pink embroidery thread for nose and mouth.
  • Optional: a little wool felt behind the eyes for amber eye rims.

Gauge

Gauge is important because the toy needs a firm knitted fabric that will not show stuffing. In stockinette stitch in the round with DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles, aim for 7 stitches and 10 rounds per 1 in / 2.5 cm. For the tiny accessories on 2.25 mm needles, aim for 8 stitches and 11 rows per 1 in / 2.5 cm.

If your stitches are loose, go down a needle size. If the fabric is too stiff to shape smoothly, go up one needle size. The exact finished size is less important than firm fabric, balanced shaping, and clean color placement.

Color Placement Overview

The photographed cat has a tuxedo face. The upper head is black, the center blaze is white, the muzzle is white, the ears are black, and the lower cheeks are white. The body is mostly covered by the romper, but the visible arms show coral-and-cream striped sleeves, black forearms, and white paws. The visible legs are white with brown sandals and rose decorations.

  • Muzzle: two soft white oval cheeks with a small pink nose between them.
  • Romper top: lavender gingham with white square checks.
  • Romper lower section: cream base with small yellow flower heads and blue-green stems.

Main Head

Work the head from the top down in the round. The head is round and slightly wide, with a gentle flat area at the lower front where the muzzle pieces are attached. Use black yarn first, then add white shaping at the front with intarsia in the round or duplicate stitch after knitting.

  11. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull tight, and secure.

White Muzzle Cheeks

The cat has two plump white muzzle pads that sit under the eyes and meet below the pink nose. Knit two identical oval pads. They should be stuffed lightly so they look soft, not pointed.

  1. With white yarn and 2.25 mm needles, CO 6 sts.
  2. Row 1: p all sts.
  3. Row 2: k1, m1R, k4, m1L, k1. 8 sts.

  8. Row 11: p all sts.
  9. Row 12: k1, ssk, k2, k2tog, k1. 6 sts.
  10. BO all sts, leaving a long tail.

Make a second muzzle cheek. Place the two ovals side by side on the lower front of the head, just under the white blaze. Stuff each oval lightly before sewing the final edge closed. The outer edges should curve upward slightly, creating the gentle cat-mouth shape.

Pink Nose and Mouth

  • With soft pink yarn, embroider a small triangle nose centered above the two muzzle pads.
  • The nose should be about 0.35 in / 9 mm wide.
  • Work 5 horizontal satin stitches for the nose, then 1 vertical stitch downward between the muzzle pads.
  • Add a tiny curved smile on each side with two short backstitches.

Ears

The ears are black, triangular, and set high on the head. They lean outward slightly and are sewn at an angle so the cat keeps the alert tuxedo-kitten expression shown in the image.

  1. With black yarn and 2.75 mm needles, CO 18 sts. Divide to work in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-3: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 4: k1, ssk, k12, k2tog, k1. 16 sts.

  13. Cut yarn, draw through sts, and flatten into a triangle.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Make two ears. Do not overstuff. If you want firmer ears, insert a tiny folded piece of matching black knitted fabric before sewing. Place each ear between rounds 10 and 19 of the head, about 1.25 in / 3 cm apart at the top, with the lower edge slightly curved.

Body

The body is a rounded pear shape, narrower at the neck and fuller at the belly. Because the romper covers most of it, use cream or white yarn for the body base. The romper will be sewn over the body later, so keep the body smooth and firm.

  1. With white or cream yarn and 2.75 mm needles, CO 10 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts. 10 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in each st around. 20 sts.

  16. Rnd 32: k all sts.
  17. Rnd 33: rep k5, k2tog around. 30 sts.
  18. Begin stuffing the body. Shape the belly full and rounded.
  19. Rnd 34: rep k3, k2tog around. 24 sts.
  20. Rnds 35-37: k all sts for neck base.
  21. BO all sts, leaving a long tail for attaching the head.

Legs

The legs are short, rounded, and mostly white below the romper. Each leg has a visible white lower section and a rounded foot that fits inside a brown sandal. Make two legs.

  1. With white yarn and 2.75 mm needles, CO 12 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts. 12 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: rep k1, kfb around. 18 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: k all sts.
  5. Rnd 4: rep k2, kfb around. 24 sts.
  6. Rnds 5-8: k all sts.
  7. Rnd 9: k6, k2tog 6 times, k6. 18 sts. This shapes the toe front.
  8. Rnd 10: k all sts.

  10. Rnds 12-22: k all sts for the leg tube.
  11. Stuff the foot firmly and the leg lightly.
  12. Rnd 23: rep k1, k2tog around, ending k2. 10 sts.
  13. Cut yarn, draw through remaining sts, and secure.

Make the second leg the same way. Attach the legs to the lower body about 0.5 in / 1.25 cm apart, angled forward. The feet should point slightly outward, matching the relaxed picnic-doll pose.

Arms with Striped Sleeves and White Paws

The arms are knitted from the paw upward. The lower paw is white, the mid-forearm is black, and the top sleeve is cream and coral striped. Make two arms. The sleeves should sit just under the ruffled collar.

  1. With white yarn and 2.75 mm needles, CO 10 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts. 10 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in each st around. 20 sts.

  16. Change to cream yarn.
  17. Rnds 24-25: k all sts in cream.
  18. Stuff paw and arm lightly. Keep the upper sleeve soft so it can be sewn flat to the shoulder.
  19. Rnd 26: rep k2, k2tog around. 12 sts.
  20. BO all sts, leaving a long sewing tail.

Sew the arms to the upper sides of the body after the romper and collar are attached. Angle each arm downward at about 35 degrees. The white paws should rest near the sides of the romper, and the striped sleeves should remain fully visible.

Black Tail

The tail is black, short, rounded, and curved out from behind the romper. It appears on the cat’s right side near the lower body.

  1. With black yarn and 2.75 mm needles, CO 10 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-4: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 5: k4, m1R, k2, m1L, k4. 12 sts.
  4. Rnds 6-18: k all sts.

Shape the tail with your fingers while stuffing. Sew it to the back lower body on the right side, leaving the tip peeking from behind the romper leg opening.

Lavender Gingham Romper

The romper is the signature garment in this design. It has a lavender upper bodice with white gingham blocks, a cream lower section with small yellow-and-blue flower motifs, short legs, cream cuffs, and a soft baby-doll shape. Work the romper as a separate garment and sew it onto the body.

  7. For side buds, CO 12 sts, knit 1 row, BO, coil, and secure. Make four buds.

Sew one larger rose to the center front of each sandal. Add one small bud to each side of the main rose. The rose cluster should cover the front strap but still leave the white toe area visible.

Facial Details and Eyes

The eyes are large, glossy, and amber, placed low on the black-and-white face. They sit above the muzzle cheeks and slightly outside the white blaze. Use safety eyes if the toy is for display. For a child-safe option, embroider the eyes fully.

  • Place eyes between rounds 25 and 28 of the head.
  • Space the eyes about 1.2 in / 3 cm apart.
  • Add amber rings with duplicate stitch or small felt circles before securing safety eyes.
  • Add one tiny white highlight stitch on the upper outer side of each eye.
  • Keep the expression wide-eyed and gentle.

Assembling the Cat

  1. Place the romper over the stuffed body before attaching the head. Center the lavender gingham panel at the front.
  2. Sew the cream lower romper to the body at the waistline using small hidden stitches.
  3. Attach the legs under the romper leg openings. The romper cuffs should slightly overlap the tops of the white legs.
  4. Sew the head to the neck opening with a strong circular seam. The white blaze must face forward.
  5. Add the ruffled collar around the neck, hiding the head-body seam.
  6. Sew the ears high on the head, leaning outward.
  7. Sew the arms to the upper body so the striped sleeves meet the ruffled collar.
  8. Attach the tail to the back lower right side.
  9. Place the bag strap across the chest and tack it lightly at the shoulder and hip.
  10. Add the sandals to the feet, then secure the roses and ankle straps.

Colorwork Tips for the Romper

For the gingham bodice, carry yarn loosely across the wrong side so the fabric does not pucker. Keep floats no longer than 4 stitches. If you prefer simpler knitting, work the entire bodice in lavender and add the white squares later with duplicate stitch.

For the floral lower section, the small motifs should look like rows of tiny yellow blossoms with blue-green details. Do not make the flowers too large. Each motif should fit inside a 5-stitch width and 3-round height so the romper keeps the delicate look shown in the image.

  • Use yellow for the flower tops.
  • Use blue or blue-green for tiny stems or leaves.
  • Keep the cream background dominant.
  • Space motifs evenly around both romper legs.

Optional Display Layout

To match the scene in the image, place the cat on a rustic surface or picnic display. Set the straw hat near the upper left side, place one apple near the hat, place the folded plaid blanket to the cat’s right, and place another apple near the lower left side. The cherry bag should remain attached to the cat.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face first because it gives the whole toy its character. The white blaze should be centered, the muzzle cheeks should be even, and the pink nose should sit neatly where the two cheeks meet. Add small adjustments with duplicate stitch if one side of the face needs more white shaping.

  • Pin every piece before sewing permanently.
  • Use matching yarn tails for invisible seams.
  • Keep the head round and the body slightly pear-shaped.
  • Angle the ears outward and the arms downward.
  • Place the bag strap diagonally across the front.

Care Notes

Hand wash only in cool water with mild soap. Do not wring the toy. Press gently in a towel and reshape the head, ears, muzzle, arms, legs, romper, and accessories while damp. Let everything dry flat in a shaded, airy place.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The tuxedo face has a black head, white center blaze, white cheeks, and pink nose.
  • The amber eyes are even and placed just above the muzzle.
  • The romper has lavender gingham on top and cream floral colorwork below.
  • The sleeves are coral and cream striped, with black forearms and white paws.
  • The collar is white, ruffled, and dotted with black embroidery.
  • The sandals are brown with coral rose clusters.
  • The picnic hat, cherry bag, apples, and plaid blanket are complete.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished cat away from direct sunlight to protect the black, lavender, coral, and red yarns from fading. Keep the hat brim flat and avoid crushing the ruffled collar. If dust collects on the toy, use a soft dry cloth or gentle lint roller before washing.

For long-term display, support the cat from behind so the neck seam does not stretch. Keep the small apples, hat, and blanket together in a clean fabric pouch when not displayed. This helps prevent the tiny picnic accessories from getting lost or misshapen.
