Pattern Overview

  • Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Construction: The kitten and most accessories are knitted separately, stuffed, shaped, and assembled.
  • Main techniques: Knitting in the round, flat knitting, increasing, decreasing, stranded colorwork, duplicate stitch, mattress stitch, short rows, embroidery, and I-cord.
  • Finished height: Approximately 20 to 22 inches from the sandal soles to the ear tips.
  • Seated height: Approximately 15 inches without the hat.
  • Head width: Approximately 6 1/2 inches after stuffing.
  • Recommended yarn: DK-weight yarn with a smooth, tightly spun finish.

Materials

  • 200 yards cinnamon or burnt-orange DK yarn for the kitten head, ears, ankles, hat, bag, and decorations.
  • 180 yards warm cream DK yarn for the muzzle, blaze, paws, sweater, and facial details.
  • 300 yards natural ivory DK yarn for the overalls and trouser legs.
  • 40 yards rust-brown DK yarn for ear interiors, eye outlines, and Fair Isle details.
  • 20 yards pale aqua DK yarn for the eye bases and colorwork.
  • Small amounts of sage green, dusty blue, lavender, peach, coral, pale pink, beige, red, orange, and leaf-green yarn.
  • US 2 or 2.75 mm double-pointed needles or a long circular needle for magic loop.
  • US 3 or 3.25 mm needles for removable garments and accessories.
  • Two 12 mm black safety eyes with locking washers.
  • Two small tan buttons for the overall straps.
  • Several tiny decorative buttons for the sandals and bag.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Blunt tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Waste yarn or stitch holders.
  • Small pom-pom maker or cardboard template.
  • Optional plastic canvas pieces for firm sandal soles and the basket base.

Gauge

Using US 2 or 2.75 mm needles, work 26 stitches and 34 rounds in stockinette stitch to measure 4 inches after gentle blocking. The fabric should be dense enough to prevent the stuffing from showing through.

Using US 3 or 3.25 mm needles, work 24 stitches and 32 rounds in stockinette stitch to measure 4 inches. This slightly looser gauge is used for the sweater, overalls, hat, bag, basket, and watering can.

  • Work all toy pieces firmly. Move the beginning-of-round marker to the center back whenever possible.

  • Keep the center front of the head clearly marked from the first round. This makes the blaze, eyes, nose, and muzzle easier to align.
  • Use mattress stitch for vertical seams and whipstitch for attaching curved pieces.
  • Secure every embroidered feature with several knots hidden inside the knitted fabric.
  • For a display item, tiny buttons may be used. For a young child, replace buttons with embroidered circles.

Kitten Head

Use the smaller needles and cinnamon yarn. The head is knitted from the crown downward. It should remain broad through the eye area and narrow gradually toward the neck.

Cream Forehead Blaze

Mark the center-front stitch. Use cream yarn and duplicate stitch to create the vertical blaze. Keep the duplicate stitches relaxed so they cover the cinnamon stitches without puckering the head.

  • Across head rounds 11 and 12, cover 4 centered stitches.
  • Across rounds 13 and 14, cover 6 centered stitches.
  • Across rounds 15 and 16, cover 8 centered stitches.
  • Across rounds 17 and 18, cover 10 centered stitches.
  • Across rounds 19 and 20, cover 12 centered stitches.
  • Across rounds 21 and 22, cover 10 centered stitches.
  • Across rounds 23 through 25, cover 8 centered stitches.
  • Across rounds 26 through 28, cover 6 centered stitches.

Allow the lower point of the blaze to disappear behind the upper edge of the muzzle. The top should be softly rounded rather than sharply triangular.

Lower Cream Face Panel

Using cream yarn and the smaller needles, knit one curved panel. This piece forms the pale lower face visible beneath the eyes and behind the two raised muzzle pads.

  1. CO 20 sts.
  2. Row 1 WS: Purl.
  3. Row 2: Kfb, knit to the final st, kfb. You now have 22 sts.

  14. BO loosely.

Position the panel with its lower edge approximately two rounds above the neck opening. Center it beneath the blaze. Lightly stuff only the middle, then sew around the edge with cream yarn.

Raised Muzzle Pads

Make two matching cream ovals. These create the rounded cheeks shown on either side of the small pink nose.

  1. CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1 WS: Purl.
  3. Row 2: Kfb, k6, kfb. You now have 10 sts.

  8. Row 11: Purl.
  9. Row 12: Ssk, k6, k2tog. You now have 8 sts.
  10. BO, leaving a 12-inch sewing tail.

Place the two pads side by side, with their inner edges touching beneath the blaze. Add a thin layer of stuffing under each pad. Sew around the outer edges, leaving the center join softly raised.

Eyes and Eye Outlines

Pale Aqua Eye Bases

Make two. Use pale aqua yarn and the smaller needles. These knitted discs should appear slightly oval after they are sewn to the curved head.

  6. BO loosely, leaving a long sewing tail.

Insert one black safety eye through the center of each aqua disc before attaching the washer. Position the eyes approximately 16 stitches apart, measured from pupil center to pupil center.

The lower edges of the aqua discs should sit about two knitted rounds above the muzzle pads. Angle the outer edges upward very slightly to reproduce the kitten’s gentle, curious expression.

Rust Eye Rims

Using rust-brown yarn, make two 3-stitch I-cords approximately 3 3/4 inches long. BO and curve one cord around each aqua disc. Sew the cords in place without stretching them.

Use cream yarn to add one tiny highlight near the upper-left side of each pupil. Use one horizontal stitch and one vertical stitch for every highlight.

Nose, Mouth, and Whisker Details

  • With pale pink yarn, embroider a small satin-stitch triangle centered where the muzzle pads meet.
  • Make the nose approximately 5 stitches wide and 3 knitted rows tall.
  • Bring cream or dark brown yarn downward from the center of the nose for 3/8 inch.
  • Split the mouth into two short curved lines, each approximately 1/2 inch long.
  • Add three subtle whisker anchoring dots on each muzzle pad using rust-brown yarn.
  • Optional whisker lines may be made with fine embroidery thread, but keep them soft and short.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For routine cleaning, use a soft lint roller or a clean makeup brush. Brush gently in the direction of the knitted stitches. Avoid pulling across embroidered flowers, eye rims, Fair Isle floats, or loose decorative threads.

For a small mark, dampen a white cloth with cool water and a tiny amount of mild wool-safe detergent. Press the cloth against the mark without rubbing. Blot with a second damp cloth, then allow the piece to air-dry completely.

Do not place the finished kitten in a washing machine or clothes dryer. Immersion may distort the stuffing, stretch the overalls, loosen facial embroidery, and damage the reinforced sandal soles.

Before long-term storage, remove the hat, bag, basket, and watering can. Wrap the kitten loosely in acid-free tissue paper and place it inside a breathable cotton storage box.

Avoid sealed plastic bags unless the item is completely dry. Trapped moisture may create odors or mildew. Store the kitten in a cool interior cupboard away from direct sunlight, heaters, pets, and high humidity.

To refresh the shape after storage, support the head with both hands and gently redistribute the stuffing. Smooth the muzzle pads, straighten the ears, adjust the sweater collar, and reshape the trouser cuffs before displaying the kitten again.
