Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

  • Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Finished puppy height: Approximately 18 inches or 46 cm from the top of the head to the bottom of the sandals.
  • Head width: Approximately 7 inches or 18 cm after stuffing.
  • Finished sitting height: Approximately 14 inches or 36 cm.
  • Construction: Most toy pieces are knitted in the round. The ears, facial patches, romper bib, sandal pieces, and decorative accessories are knitted flat.
  • Seam allowance: The listed measurements include the knitted edges used for sewing.

Materials

  • DK-weight yarn in warm ivory for the head, muzzle, paws, socks, stripes, and facial blaze: approximately 180 yards.
  • DK-weight yarn in caramel tan for the face patches, ears, body, arms, legs, nose, and satchel: approximately 220 yards.
  • DK-weight yarn in powder blue for the cable romper: approximately 180 yards.
  • DK-weight yarn in pale yellow for the sandals: approximately 55 yards.
  • DK-weight yarn in leaf green for the cap and apple leaf: approximately 75 yards.
  • DK-weight yarn in dark red for the cap details and apple: approximately 35 yards.
  • DK-weight yarn in chocolate brown and oatmeal cream for the checked picnic basket.
  • Small amounts of black, white, pink, golden yellow, pale gray, peach, and olive yarn.
  • US 2 or 2.75 mm double-pointed needles or a long circular needle for magic-loop knitting.
  • US 2 or 2.75 mm straight needles for flat pieces.
  • Two 24 mm black safety eyes with secure washers.
  • Two 12 mm antique-style buttons for the romper straps.
  • Two 10 mm buttons for the sandal ankle straps.
  • One 8 mm button for the satchel flap.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Tapestry needle, stitch markers, row counter, scissors, pins, and a small crochet hook for attaching fringe.
  • Soft pink textile chalk or pink yarn for the blush.
  • Optional pet slicker brush for gently fluffing the ear fringe.

Gauge

Toy gauge: 24 stitches and 34 rounds measure 4 inches or 10 cm in stockinette stitch. The knitted fabric must be firm enough to prevent stuffing from showing through the stitches.

Gauge is especially important for the head, clothing, and sandals. Use a smaller needle if the fabric stretches open when firmly stuffed. The accessory gauge may vary slightly, but both matching pieces must be knitted with the same tension.

Abbreviations

  • BO: Bind off.
  • CO: Cast on.
  • K: Knit.
  • P: Purl.
  • K2tog: Knit two stitches together.
  • SSK: Slip one stitch knitwise twice, insert the left needle through both slipped stitches, and knit them together.
  • Kfb: Knit into the front and back of the same stitch.
  • YO: Yarn over.
  • RS: Right side.
  • WS: Wrong side.
  • St or sts: Stitch or stitches.
  • Rnd or rnds: Round or rounds.
  • C6F: Slip 3 stitches to a cable needle and hold in front, knit 3, then knit 3 from the cable needle.
  • C6B: Slip 3 stitches to a cable needle and hold in back, knit 3, then knit 3 from the cable needle.
  • C4F: Slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold in front, knit 2, then knit 2 from the cable needle.
  • C4B: Slip 2 stitches to a cable needle and hold in back, knit 2, then knit 2 from the cable needle.

Important Construction Notes

  • Place a removable marker at the beginning of every round.
  • Stuff each part gradually. Small portions of stuffing produce a smoother surface than one large piece.
  • Use mattress stitch for flat seams and ladder stitch for attaching shaped pieces.
  • Keep all color-change knots inside the toy or garment.
  • The puppy is designed in a seated position. The legs must be attached slightly forward instead of directly underneath the body.
  • Safety eyes are not recommended for toys intended for children younger than three years. Embroider the eyes when necessary.

Puppy Head

Use warm ivory yarn. Work continuously in the round. The head begins at the crown, expands into a large rounded spaniel head, and tapers beneath the cheeks.

  18. Rnd 34: K around.
  19. Rnd 35: Repeat K2, K2tog around. 36 sts.

Pause before closing the head. Sew the caramel facial panels into position, insert the safety eyes, and begin stuffing. Shape the crown into a smooth dome and place additional stuffing at the outer cheeks.

  1. Rnd 36: Repeat K1, K2tog around. 24 sts.
  2. Rnd 37: K2tog around. 12 sts.

Finish stuffing firmly without making the surface rigid. Cut the yarn, pass it through the remaining stitches, pull securely, and fasten the opening.

Caramel Facial Panels

Make two panels in caramel tan. These pieces form the warm brown sides of the spaniel’s face while leaving a broad ivory blaze through the forehead and nose area.

First Panel

  1. CO 3 sts.
  2. Row 1, WS: P3.
  3. Row 2: Kfb in each st. 6 sts.
  4. Row 3: P across.
  5. Row 4: K1, Kfb, K to final 2 sts, Kfb, K1. 8 sts.
  6. Rows 5-20: Repeat Rows 3 and 4 eight more times. 24 sts after Row 20.
  7. Rows 21-28: Continue in stockinette stitch without shaping.
  8. Row 29: K2tog, K to final 2 sts, SSK. 22 sts.
  9. Row 30: P across.
  10. Rows 31-36: Repeat Rows 29 and 30 three more times. 16 sts.
  11. Row 37: K2tog across. 8 sts.
  12. Row 38: P across.
  13. BO all 8 sts.

Second Panel

Work exactly as for the first panel. Reverse the direction of the slight stretch when pinning so the two panels mirror each other.

Place each narrow tip approximately 2 inches or 5 cm from the crown center. Angle the panels outward around the eyes. Leave an ivory stripe approximately 1.5 inches or 4 cm wide at the forehead and approximately 1 inch or 2.5 cm wide between the eyes.

The widest lower portion of each panel should curve around the outer cheek. Sew with tiny mattress stitches. Do not pull the seam tightly enough to create a ridge.

Eyes and Eye Outlines

  • Place the eye centers between Head Rnds 20 and 21.
  • Leave approximately 2.5 inches or 6.5 cm between the eye centers.
  • Push each eye stem through both the caramel panel and the ivory head.
  • Before fastening the washers, confirm that the eyes are level and equally spaced from the central blaze.
  • Use black yarn to embroider a narrow outline around the upper and outer half of each eye.
  • Add one tiny white duplicate stitch near the upper inside edge of each eye to imitate a reflected highlight.

Rounded Muzzle Pads

Make two in warm ivory. Each pad is knitted as a small stuffed sphere and then gently flattened during assembly.

  1. CO 8 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: Kfb in each st. 16 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Repeat K1, Kfb around. 24 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: Repeat K2, Kfb around. 32 sts.
  5. Rnd 4: Repeat K3, Kfb around. 40 sts.
  6. Rnds 5-10: K around.
  7. Rnd 11: Repeat K3, K2tog around. 32 sts.
  8. Rnd 12: Repeat K2, K2tog around. 24 sts.
  9. Rnd 13: Repeat K1, K2tog around. 16 sts.
  10. Stuff lightly, keeping the front smooth.
  11. Rnd 14: K2tog around. 8 sts.

Cut the yarn and close the remaining stitches. Make the second muzzle pad. Sew the two pads side by side beneath the eyes, with their inner edges touching at the center of the face.

The upper edges should overlap the lower points of the caramel panels slightly. Flatten each pad as it is sewn so the muzzle projects approximately 1.25 inches or 3 cm from the face.

Nose and Mouth

Use peach-tan yarn for the small rounded nose.

  1. CO 6 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: Kfb in each st. 12 sts.
  3. Rnds 2-3: K around.
  4. Rnd 4: K2tog around. 6 sts.

Insert a tiny pinch of stuffing. Close the stitches and sew the nose horizontally over the touching upper edges of the muzzle pads.

With chocolate brown yarn, make one straight stitch downward from the nose for approximately 0.5 inch or 1.2 cm. Add two shallow curved mouth stitches, one toward each muzzle pad. Keep the expression soft and symmetrical.

Rosy Cheeks

Place one blush circle on each muzzle pad, slightly below and outside the eye. Use pink yarn to make loose duplicate stitches over an area approximately 1 inch or 2.5 cm wide.

Blend the outer edge with fewer stitches so the color fades gradually. Textile chalk may be lightly brushed over the yarn, but avoid permanent marker or heavily pigmented paint.

Long Spaniel Ears

Make two ear bases in caramel tan. Work flat in stockinette stitch. The finished ear bases should hang from the sides of the head and end near the lower cheek.

  1. CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1, WS: P8.
  3. Row 2: Kfb in every st. 16 sts.
  4. Row 3: P across.
  5. Row 4: K1, Kfb, K to final 2 sts, Kfb, K1. 18 sts.
  6. Rows 5-14: Repeat Rows 3 and 4 five more times. 28 sts.
  7. Rows 15-34: Work in stockinette stitch.
  8. Row 35: K2tog, K to final 2 sts, SSK. 26 sts.
  9. Row 36: P across.
  10. Rows 37-48: Repeat Rows 35 and 36 six more times. 14 sts.
  11. Row 49: K2tog across. 7 sts.
  12. Row 50: P across.
  13. BO all sts.

Block each ear base lightly. Cut approximately 80 caramel yarn strands for each ear, each measuring 6 inches or 15 cm.

  • Fold two strands together.
  • Insert a crochet hook through one knitted stitch.
  • Pull the folded center through the fabric.
  • Draw the loose ends through the folded loop.
  • Repeat across the outer surface and all edges of the ear.

Trim the fringe to approximately 2.75 inches or 7 cm. Separate the yarn fibers gently with your fingers or a soft brush. Do not overbrush, because the ears should retain visible wavy strands.

Pin the upper edge of each ear between Head Rnds 11 and 18. Angle each ear downward approximately 20 degrees. Sew the upper 1.5 inches or 4 cm securely and leave the remaining length free.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the head to the ivory neck opening. Keep the facial blaze centered with the front of the body.
  2. Attach the arms at Body Rnds 10-14. Angle them forward approximately 15 degrees so the paws rest beside the romper.
  3. Dress the body in the shorts and fasten the bib straps.
  4. Attach the legs to the lower front of the body between Body Rnds 34 and 41. Leave approximately 2 inches or 5 cm between the upper inner leg seams.
  5. Angle both legs forward so the puppy sits naturally with the sandals visible.
  6. Place each foot inside a sandal and take several hidden stitches through the sole and the lower paw.
  7. Check that the ears hang at equal heights and that the bow, bee, and daisy remain visible from the front.
  8. Position the satchel strap diagonally across the bib without covering the central cable.
  9. Set the picnic basket beside the puppy and arrange the apple and banana inside it.
  10. Place the cap on the table or gently rest it on the puppy’s head.

Add tiny tan duplicate stitches above the muzzle if additional contour is required. Smooth the stuffing around the eyes and cheeks with the blunt end of a knitting needle.

Use one hidden stitch under each muzzle pad to keep both pads level. The nose should sit directly over the central mouth line and should not lean toward either cheek.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For light cleaning, remove the satchel, cap, basket, fruit, and other loose accessories. Use a clean, slightly damp cloth to blot the knitted surface. Work from the outside of a mark toward its center and avoid rubbing the stitches.

For a deeper cleaning, hand wash the puppy in cool water with a small amount of gentle wool-safe detergent. Support the head and body while lifting the toy. Do not soak wooden, metal, or decorative buttons for an extended period.

Rinse carefully without twisting. Press the toy between clean towels to remove moisture. Restore the shape of the head, muzzle, ears, arms, legs, and clothing while the yarn remains damp.

Air dry the puppy flat in a well-ventilated area. Turn it periodically so all sides dry evenly. Once completely dry, separate the ear fringe with your fingers and lightly brush only the ends when additional softness is needed.

Store the complete set in a breathable cotton bag. Avoid sealed plastic containers in humid conditions. Place acid-free tissue around the ears, sandals, basket handle, and satchel strap to prevent long-term bending or compression.
