Crochet Tutorial: Curly-Haired Lamb Girl in Blue Floral Sundress with Picnic Bag and Gingham Blanket – Free Crochet Pattern.

This cheerful lamb girl features a softly shaped amigurumi body, long peach-lined ears, a rounded muzzle, large expressive eyes, and a full cap of brown spiral curls. She wears a white sundress decorated with blue flowers, lace edging, and matching white sandals. Her picnic set includes a crossbody bag, sandwich, apple, gingham blanket, grape clusters, floral sunhat, red roses, and a white daisy hair accessory.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size and Construction

Using the recommended yarn and hook sizes, the finished lamb measures approximately 13.5 inches or 34 cm from the top of the curls to the bottom of the sandals. The head is intentionally oversized, while the body, arms, and legs are softly proportioned to match the doll shown.

The head, body, arms, and legs are crocheted separately. The facial muzzle, ears, hair cap, curls, dress, sandals, flowers, hat, picnic bag, food, blanket, and grapes are added afterward. Crochet all amigurumi pieces in continuous spirals unless a joined round or turned row is specifically stated.

Materials

  • Sport-weight or light DK cotton yarn in warm beige for the head, body, arms, legs, and feet
  • Sport-weight cotton yarn in soft peach for the inner ears
  • Sport-weight cotton yarn in medium curly-brown for the hair cap and curls
  • Sport-weight cotton yarn in white for the dress, sandals, daisy, hat, sandwich bread, and blanket
  • Sport-weight cotton yarn in medium blue and light blue for floral details
  • Sport-weight cotton yarn in green for leaves, stems, grapes, and apple leaf
  • Sport-weight cotton yarn in red for roses, apple, and blanket checks
  • Sport-weight cotton yarn in purple, dark purple, and light green for grape clusters
  • Sport-weight cotton yarn in light tan or camel for the picnic bag and shoulder strap
  • Small amounts of yellow, brown, dark green, cream, and pale pink yarn
  • 3 mm crochet hook for the doll and most accessories
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for small flowers, grapes, and facial details
  • 16 mm brown or dark safety eyes with clear or brown rims
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Yarn needle and sewing needle
  • Stitch markers
  • Straight pins
  • Small white button for the dress
  • Two miniature white buttons for the sandals
  • Small piece of plastic canvas for the picnic bag base, optional
  • Brown embroidery thread for eyelashes, eyebrows, nose, and mouth
  • Black or dark brown thread for the PICNIC lettering

Gauge and Tension

Exact gauge is less important than maintaining a firm fabric that does not allow stuffing to show. A useful amigurumi gauge is approximately 6 single crochet stitches and 6 rounds per inch with the 3 mm hook.

Keep the stitches compact and consistent. If gaps appear when the piece is stuffed, change to a 2.75 mm hook. If the fabric becomes stiff and difficult to shape, change to a 3.25 mm hook.

Insert the safety eyes between Rounds 17 and 18. Leave 12 visible stitches between the inner edges of the eyes. The eye centers should be approximately 15 stitches apart.

Place a small circle of white felt or white crochet fabric behind each eye before locking the washers, if desired. This creates the pale eye rim visible around the dark eyes.

Stuff the head firmly through the remaining opening. Shape the cheeks by adding small pieces of stuffing beneath and slightly outside each eye. Fasten off with a long tail for sewing the head to the neck.

Rounded Muzzle

Use a slightly lighter beige yarn. Work around both sides of the foundation chain to create an oval.

  1. Round 1: Ch 7. Beginning in the second ch from the hook, sc in the next 5 ch, work 3 sc in the final ch, turn to work along the opposite side, sc in the next 4 unused loops, and inc in the final loop. 14 stitches.
  2. Round 2: Inc, sc in the next 4 stitches, inc in each of the next 3 stitches, sc in the next 4 stitches, inc in each of the final 2 stitches. 20 stitches.
  3. Round 3: Repeat 1 sc, inc once, sc in the next 4 stitches, repeat 1 sc, inc three times, sc in the next 4 stitches, repeat 1 sc, inc twice. 26 stitches.
  4. Round 4: Sc in every stitch around. 26 stitches.

Fasten off with a long sewing tail. Place the muzzle centrally over Rounds 19-25 of the head. The lower edge should sit approximately two rounds above the head opening.

Sew around three-quarters of the muzzle, add a thin layer of stuffing, and complete the seam. Keep the muzzle gently domed rather than heavily stuffed.

Nose, Mouth, Eyebrows, and Whiskers

Embroider a small rounded triangular nose with brown thread at the center of the muzzle. The nose should cover approximately three stitches horizontally and two rounds vertically.

Bring the thread down from the center of the nose for three-quarters of an inch. Form a short vertical mouth line, then create two shallow curves extending one stitch to the left and one stitch to the right.

Embroider one thin eyebrow two rounds above each eye. Angle the outer end slightly upward. Add three short eyelashes at the outer upper corner of each eye.

For decorative whiskers, pass doubled tan sewing thread through the muzzle. Make three whiskers on each side, each approximately 1.5 inches long. Knot securely inside the head. Omit loose whiskers when making the doll for a small child.

Outer Ears

Make two with warm beige yarn. Work around both sides of the foundation chain.

  1. Round 1: Ch 11. Beginning in the second ch from the hook, sc in the next 9 ch, work 3 sc in the final ch, sc in the next 8 unused loops along the opposite side, and inc in the last loop. 22 stitches.

  4. Round 4: Sc in every stitch around. 34 stitches.

Fasten off with a long tail. Do not stuff.

Inner Ear Panels

Make two with soft peach yarn.

  1. Round 1: Ch 10. Beginning in the second ch from the hook, sc in the next 8 ch, work 3 sc in the final ch, sc in the next 7 unused loops, and inc in the last loop. 20 stitches.
  2. Round 2: Inc, sc in the next 7 stitches, inc in each of the next 3 stitches, sc in the next 7 stitches, and inc in each of the final 2 stitches. 26 stitches.

Fasten off. Center one peach panel on each beige ear and sew it in place with small stitches. Leave a narrow beige border visible around the peach panel.

Pinch the base of each ear into a shallow fold. Sew through the folded base several times. Attach the ears to the head between Rounds 18 and 23, approximately 16 stitches apart across the front.

Angle each ear downward approximately 35 degrees. The upper edge should disappear slightly beneath the hair cap, while the rounded end hangs beside the cheeks.

Body

Use warm beige yarn. Begin at the neck and work downward. Stuff the body firmly enough to support the head but keep the lower torso slightly softer.

  1. Foundation: Ch 18 and join with a sl st, taking care not to twist the chain.
  2. Round 1: Sc in each chain around. 18 stitches.
  3. Round 2: Repeat 2 sc, inc around. 24 stitches.

  12. Round 21: Repeat 1 sc, dec around. 12 stitches.
  13. Round 22: Dec around. 6 stitches.

Complete the stuffing before the final decreases. Fasten off and close the final opening. Keep the beginning neck opening accessible for attaching the head.

Arms

Make two with warm beige yarn. Stuff the hands and lower arms firmly. Add less stuffing near the upper opening so the arms can rest naturally against the dress.

  1. Round 1: Work 6 sc in an MR. 6 stitches.
  2. Round 2: Inc in every stitch. 12 stitches.
  3. Round 3: Repeat 1 sc, inc around. 18 stitches.

  5. Round 7: Repeat 4 sc, dec three times. 15 stitches.
  6. Rounds 8-21: Sc in every stitch around. 15 stitches.

Finish stuffing at Round 18. Flatten the upper opening and crochet through both layers with 7 sc. Fasten off with a long sewing tail.

Legs and Feet

Make two with warm beige yarn. Begin at the toe and work upward. Mark the center back of each leg so the feet can be positioned facing forward.

Stuff the foot firmly, especially around the toe. Stuff the leg evenly without stretching it. Flatten the upper opening and crochet through both layers with 9 sc. Fasten off with a long sewing tail.

Attaching the Limbs and Head

Pin the legs to the lower body at Rounds 17-19. Leave approximately four stitches between the inner edges of the legs. Check that both feet point directly forward before sewing.

Sew each leg across its flattened upper edge. Add a second line of stitches beneath the first seam for strength. The dress skirt will conceal the attachment area.

Attach the arms to the body between Rounds 4 and 7. Place each arm approximately eight stitches from the center front. Angle the arms downward so the hands rest near the sides of the skirt.

Position the head over the neck opening. The bottom center of the muzzle should line up with the center front of the body. Sew around the neck twice, passing through both the head and neck stitches.

Brown Hair Cap

Use brown yarn and the 3 mm hook. The cap provides a stable foundation for the spiral curls and should cover the crown, back of the head, and upper sides.

  1. Round 1: Work 6 sc in an MR. 6 stitches.
  2. Round 2: Inc around. 12 stitches.
  3. Round 3: Repeat 1 sc, inc around. 18 stitches.

  5. Round 5: Repeat 3 sc, inc around. 30 stitches.
  6. Round 6: Repeat 4 sc, inc around. 36 stitches.
  7. Round 7: Repeat 5 sc, inc around. 42 stitches.

  11. Round 11: Repeat 9 sc, inc around. 66 stitches.
  12. Rounds 12-17: Sc in every stitch around. 66 stitches.

Fasten off with a long tail. Pin the cap over the head so the front edge forms a curved hairline approximately three rounds above the eyebrows.

The cap should cover the upper attachment points of the ears but must not cover the peach inner panels. Sew the cap around its entire lower edge.

Spiral Curls

Use brown yarn and the 2.5 mm hook. Each curl is made by working 2 sc in every chain. Make the curls tightly so they twist into compact ringlets.

  • Make 18 short front curls: Ch 10, work 2 sc in each chain beginning in the second chain from the hook. 18 sc.
  • Make 24 medium crown curls: Ch 13, work 2 sc in each chain beginning in the second chain from the hook. 24 sc.
  • Make 30 longer side and back curls: Ch 16, work 2 sc in each chain beginning in the second chain from the hook. 30 sc.

Attach the 18 short curls along the front hairline in two staggered rows of nine. Place the first row directly above the eyebrows and the second row approximately one round behind it.

Arrange the 24 medium curls over the crown in four circular rows of six curls. Stagger each row so the hair cap does not show between the spirals.

Attach 15 long curls around each side and across the back. Allow the lowest curls to touch the tops of the ears and the shoulders. Separate and reshape each spiral with your fingers after sewing.

Red Rose Hair Cluster

Make three roses with red yarn and the 2.5 mm hook.

Hat Flowers

Make five miniature blue flowers. Work 5 sc in an MR. In each stitch, work ch 2, hdc, ch 2, sl st in the same stitch. Add a white or yellow knot to the center.

Sew the flowers evenly around the lower crown of the hat. With green yarn, embroider curved stems and two leaves between the flowers.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Place the dress on the lamb and close the waistband button at the back. Arrange the skirt so the back opening is hidden beneath the fullness of the fabric.

Check that the bib lies flat, the straps are equal in length, and the lace hem falls just above the knees. Adjust the flower motifs before securing any loose edges.

Place the picnic strap diagonally from the right shoulder to the left hip. Secure the strap to the shoulder with one hidden stitch. Position the bag so the apple and sandwich remain visible.

Set the gingham blanket beside the lamb. Place the purple and green grape clusters near the blanket and position the white sunhat above them to reproduce the complete picnic scene.

Add pale pink blush beneath each eye with fabric-safe blush or a small amount of pink yarn rubbed gently over the stitches. Keep the color subtle and away from the muzzle.

Care Notes

Hand-wash the lamb and removable accessories in cool water with a small amount of gentle detergent. Do not soak pieces containing plastic canvas for an extended period.

Support the head and hair when lifting the doll. Avoid pulling individual curls, flower petals, shoulder straps, or picnic food pieces.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Place the doll in a clean basin of cool water. Gently press soapy water through the crocheted fabric without twisting or scrubbing. Rinse several times until the water runs clear.

Wrap the doll in a clean towel and press gently to remove excess water. Reshape the face, ears, curls, dress, and feet while damp.

Allow every piece to air-dry completely on a flat towel away from direct sunlight, heaters, and tumble dryers. Turn the doll occasionally so the stuffing dries evenly.

Store the finished set in a dry, ventilated container. Place acid-free tissue beneath the hat brim and between the curls to help preserve their shape during long-term storage.
