Gauge and Tension
Gauge is not essential, but tight and even stitches are required so the stuffing does not show. With a 3.25 mm hook, 22 single crochet stitches and 24 rounds should measure approximately 4 inches. Use a smaller hook if openings appear between stitches.
Keep the head, body, paws, and tail core firmly crocheted. Work the clothing with slightly more relaxed tension so the vest and accessories remain flexible. Stuff the head firmly, the body moderately, and the arms lightly near the shoulder openings.

- Change colors during the final yarn-over of the stitch before the new color begins.
- Leave long yarn tails on all pieces that will be sewn to the body.
- The beginning of each body round should remain centered at the back.
- The beginning of each head round should remain slightly behind the left side of the head.

Fasten off. Join medium brown yarn to an unused back loop from Rnd 17. Work one sl st in each of the 54 loops around to define the crown and brim.
Hat Flower Band
Cut three strands of yarn measuring 24 inches each: one pale pink, one cream, and one leaf green. Tie the strands together, braid firmly, and secure the opposite end.
Wrap the braid around the base of the hat crown directly above Rnd 17. Sew the braid in place at four evenly spaced points.
Small Pink Flower
- With pale pink yarn, work 5 sc into an MR.
- In each stitch, work sl st, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, and sl st in the same stitch.
- Repeat in all five stitches and fasten off.
Small Rust Flower
Repeat the small flower instructions with rust yarn. Add a pale pink French-knot center.
Hat Leaves
Make two with leaf green yarn.
- Ch 6.
- Beginning in the second ch, work sl st, sc, hdc, dc, and 3 sc in the final ch.
- Continue along the opposite side with dc, hdc, sc, and sl st.
Sew the two leaves, pink flower, and rust flower together on one side of the braided band. Slightly overlap the flowers so the arrangement follows the curve of the brim.
Potted Fern
Flowerpot
Use rust-brown yarn and the 3.00 mm hook.
- Rnd 1: Work 6 sc into an MR. 6 sts.
- Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
- Rnd 3: Repeat 1 sc, inc around. 18 sts.
- Rnd 4: Repeat 2 sc, inc around. 24 sts.
- Rnd 5: BLO sc in each st around. 24 sts.
- Rnds 6–9: Sc in each st around. 24 sts.
- Rnd 10: Repeat 3 sc, inc around. 30 sts.
- Rnds 11–12: Sc in each st around. 30 sts.
- Rnd 13: FLO sc in each st around. 30 sts.
- Rnd 14: Sc in each st around. 30 sts.
Fasten off. Fold Rnds 13–14 outward to create the thick pot rim.
Soil Disc
Use dark brown yarn.
- Rnd 1: Work 6 sc into an MR. 6 sts.
- Rnd 2: Inc around. 12 sts.
- Rnd 3: Repeat 1 sc, inc around. 18 sts.
- Rnd 4: Repeat 2 sc, inc around. 24 sts.
- Rnd 5: Repeat 3 sc, inc around. 30 sts.
Lightly stuff the pot. Insert the soil disc beneath the folded rim and sew it to the inside of Rnd 12.
Fern Fronds
Make six fronds in a mixture of forest green and light green.
- Ch 16.
- Sl st into the second ch from the hook.
- Repeat ch 4, sl st in the second ch, sc in the next ch, hdc in the next ch, and sl st into the next stem chain.
- Repeat the leaf sequence down one side of the stem.
- Turn the work and repeat the same leaf sequence along the opposite side.
- Finish with a sl st at the stem base.
Make two fronds with 16 chains, two with 14 chains, and two with 12 chains. Sew all six bases into the center of the soil disc, arranging the longest fronds toward the back.
Harvest Seed Packet
Make two panels with light beige yarn and the 2.50 mm hook.
- Foundation: Ch 13.
- Row 1: Beginning in the second ch, sc across. 12 sts.
- Rows 2–16: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 12 sts.
Fasten off the first panel. Leave a long tail on the second panel. Place a rectangle of firm felt or plastic canvas between the panels. The insert should measure approximately 1¾ inches by 2½ inches.
Whipstitch the panels together around all four sides. Use medium brown yarn to work one line of surface sl stitches around the front panel, one stitch inside the outer edge.
Seed Packet Lettering
Use dark brown embroidery thread and small backstitches. Center the words in four short lines.
- Line 1: CHIPMUNK’S
- Line 2: HARVEST
- Line 3: three small seed shapes
- Line 4: SEEDS
Form each seed with two diagonal stitches crossing in the center. Add two tiny green leaves beneath the seed shapes.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
- Center the head over the 24-stitch body opening. Sew the body to the underside of the head between Head Rnds 26–28.
- Pass the sewing yarn through the head and body several times before tying off securely inside the torso.
- Attach the arms to Body Rnds 24–29. Angle both arms approximately 20 degrees downward.
- Position the legs against Body Rnds 6–12. Leave six visible stitches between the inner edges of the pant legs.
- Sew each leg across its flattened 10-stitch upper edge and reinforce both outer corners.
- Attach the tail to the center back between Body Rnds 7–18.
- Curve the tail upward behind the chipmunk and tack it lightly to the back near Body Rnd 23.
- Add a second hidden tack where the tail passes behind one shoulder. Keep the tail full and visible from the front side.
- Dress the chipmunk in the vest before permanently attaching the satchel.
- Cross the strap over the right shoulder and position the bag against the left hip.
- Tack the strap to the shoulder and tack the lower back corner of the satchel to the pants.
- Place the carrot, trowel, and hand fork inside the bag. Sew each item to the inner rim with two discreet stitches.
Check that the eyes are level, the muzzle remains centered, and the forehead stripe points directly toward the nose. Adjust the stuffing through nearby stitches with the blunt end of the crochet hook if one cheek appears flatter.
Add one tiny white embroidery stitch at the upper outer edge of each black eye to imitate the bright reflected highlight. Do not cover more than one quarter of the eye surface.
Care Notes
Keep the chipmunk away from open flames, excessive heat, and prolonged direct sunlight. Safety eyes, buttons, stiffened tools, and small removable accessories are not suitable for children under three years old.
For a child-safe version, replace safety eyes with embroidered eyes, embroider the vest buttons, omit the plastic packet insert, and sew every accessory permanently to the main figure.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Remove the hat, seed packet, potted fern, and any unsecured accessories before cleaning. Use a clean white cloth dampened with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent to spot-clean the body.
Press gently rather than rubbing. Rubbing can loosen the tail fringe, distort the embroidered lettering, and create fuzz on the cotton stitches. Blot the cleaned area with a second cloth dampened only with cool water.
Reshape the head, cheeks, ears, vest, boots, and tail while the yarn is slightly damp. Allow every piece to air-dry on a dry towel in a well-ventilated room.
Do not machine wash, tumble dry, bleach, iron, or wring the finished set. Store it upright in a breathable fabric bag. Place acid-free tissue around the tail and hat brim so they retain their full shapes during long-term storage.
