This woodland calico cat knitting pattern creates a round-faced kitten with mismatched blue and golden eyes, soft calico patches, a cream forest romper, embroidered mushrooms, leafy details, brown sandals, an olive explorer satchel, a tiny field journal, a knitted camera, a straw garden hat, and small nature-study accessories.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is written in US English knitting terms. The cat is worked as a stuffed knitted art doll using small needles, firm stuffing, duplicate stitch colorwork, embroidery, I-cord straps, and sewn shaping. Most pieces are worked in the round, while flat rows are used for small accessories.
- Finished size: About 9 inches tall from sandal sole to ear tip.
- Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate.
- Main method: Knitting in the round with DPNs or magic loop.
- Gauge: 8 stitches and 11 rounds = 1 inch in stockinette, lightly stuffed.
- Needles: US 1.5 or US 2, 2.5 mm to 2.75 mm.
- Construction: Feet, legs, body, head, arms, ears, clothing details, then accessories.
Materials
- Sport weight or fine DK yarn in cream cat fur, warm white, pumpkin orange, charcoal gray, olive green, moss green, straw tan, dark brown, rust, blush pink, berry red, berry blue, black, and light gray.
- US 1.5 or US 2 double-pointed needles or long circular needle for magic loop.
- Two safety eyes, 14 mm to 16 mm: one blue and one golden olive.
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- Tapestry needle.
- Small embroidery needle.
- Four tiny tan buttons for the romper and satchel.
- Black embroidery thread for lashes, pupils, calico marks, journal letters, and camera details.
- Pink embroidery thread for the nose and mouth.

Important Knitting Notes
Use a tight gauge so the stuffing does not show through the fabric. Stuff the feet, legs, body, and head firmly but not so hard that the stitches stretch. The cat in the photo has a round head, compact body, short arms, plump feet, and soft toy-like proportions.
The front of the doll is very important. Place a removable marker at the center front of the body and head. All romper embroidery, facial embroidery, satchel placement, sandal straps, and calico patches should be aligned from that center front marker.
- Body proportion: The head is slightly wider than the torso.
- Arm angle: Arms point gently downward at about 35 degrees.
- Leg angle: Legs stand straight with a small gap at the crotch.
- Ear angle: Ears sit high and tilt outward about 15 degrees.
- Satchel angle: Strap crosses from the cat’s left shoulder to the right hip.
- Hat: The straw hat is a loose prop and sits beside the doll, not on the head.

Feet and Legs
Make two identical legs. Each foot begins in cream cat fur, then changes to warm white for the romper leg. The finished foot should be rounded at the toe and slightly flattened at the bottom so the brown sandals sit neatly around it.

Stuff the body through the neck opening. Shape the belly so it is softly rounded but not wide. The front of the romper should look smooth and slightly tall, because the forest embroidery and bib details will be placed over the center front later.
Romper Front Bib, Straps, and Buttons
The image shows a cream forest romper with a flat front bib, shoulder buttons, embroidered plants, and thin green straps. The knitted body already forms the romper legs and torso. This separate bib panel adds the raised clothing layer seen on the chest.
Bib Panel
- Row 1: With B, CO 18 sts. Knit across.

Green Straps
- With E, CO 3 sts and knit a 3-st I-cord for 4 inches. Make 2.
- Sew one end of each strap to the top corners of the bib.
- Cross the straps lightly over the shoulders and sew the back ends to the upper back.
- Sew one tan button at each front strap end and one smaller button at each back strap end.
Forest Embroidery on the Romper
The romper is decorated with small woodland motifs. Use duplicate stitch where possible and straight embroidery stitches for stems. Keep the motifs low on the body and legs, leaving the upper bib mostly light and clean like the photo.
Front Body Motifs
- Large fern on viewer’s left belly: On body Rnds 7-17, place a vertical F stem over 10 rounds. Add diagonal leaf stitches, 5 to the left and 5 to the right, each 2 sts long.
- Orange flower pair on bib: On bib Rows 7-9, duplicate stitch two small J flowers, each 3 sts wide. Add K centers with one small knot stitch.
- Right-side tall grass: On body Rnds 8-18, embroider three F stems, 7, 9, and 11 rounds tall. Add olive side leaves every 2 rounds.
- Lower left mushroom: On left romper leg front Rnds 15-19, duplicate stitch a J cap over 5 sts, then stitch a B stem 3 rounds tall.
- Lower right mushroom: On right leg front Rnds 14-18, duplicate stitch a J cap over 6 sts and add 3 cream dots.
- Tiny yellow blossoms: Add six K flower knots scattered across the legs, never more than 1 stitch wide.
Arms
The arms are short, softly tapered, and cream colored. Each arm has a small orange calico band near the wrist, matching the cat’s patchy fur. Do not overstuff the arms; they should curve gently beside the romper.
- Rnd 1: With A, CO 10 sts. Join in the round. k10.
- Rnd 2: kfb in every st around. Total: 20 sts.
- Rnd 3: k20.

- Rnd 10: Change back to A. k16.
- Rnds 11-21: k16.
- Rnd 22: *k2, k2tog; repeat from * 4 times. Total: 12 sts.
- Rnd 23: k12.
- Rnd 24: BO, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Stuff the paw and lower arm lightly. Flatten the top opening. Sew each arm to the side of the body at Rnds 19-22, just below the ribbed neck. Angle each arm downward and outward so the paws rest beside the romper.
Head
The head is the most recognizable part of the cat. Knit it as a smooth cream sphere, then add the calico patches by duplicate stitch. This gives better control over the large orange patch, gray patch, white face blaze, and small dark markings.
- Rnd 1: With A, CO 8 sts. Join in the round. k8.
- Rnd 2: kfb in every st around. Total: 16 sts.
- Rnd 3: *k1, kfb; repeat from * 8 times. Total: 24 sts.

- Rnds 9-22: k64.
- Rnd 23: *k6, k2tog; repeat from * 8 times. Total: 56 sts.
- Rnd 24: k56.
- Rnd 25: *k5, k2tog; repeat from * 8 times. Total: 48 sts.

- Rnd 27: *k3, k2tog; repeat from * 8 times. Total: 32 sts.
- Rnd 28: *k2, k2tog; repeat from * 8 times. Total: 24 sts.
- Rnd 29: *k1, k2tog; repeat from * 8 times. Total: 16 sts.
Pause before closing the head. Insert the eyes between Rnds 17 and 18. From the viewer’s perspective, place the blue eye on the left and the golden olive eye on the right. Leave 10 visible stitches between the eyes.
- Rnd 30: k2tog around. Total: 8 sts.
- Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and secure.
Stuff the head firmly, especially around the cheeks and lower face. The face should be round and slightly flattened at the front. Use your fingers to mold the lower cheeks outward before the final closure becomes tight.
Muzzle and Cheek Pads
The photo shows a tiny pink nose set between soft rounded cheeks. Make two small muzzle pads in warm white. They should sit side by side under the eyes, creating the plush cat expression without covering the calico patches.
Make 2 Cheek Pads

Sew the two pads under the eyes, touching at the center. Place the top of each pad at Head Rnd 19 and the lower edge around Head Rnd 23. Add a tiny amount of stuffing under each pad before closing the last few stitches.
Calico Patch Placement
The calico markings are added after knitting so the front view stays clear. Use duplicate stitch and small embroidery stitches. Count from the center front line of the head. The center front line sits halfway between the two eyes and runs down to the nose.
- White blaze: With B, duplicate stitch a vertical stripe 7 sts wide from Head Rnd 8 to Rnd 20. Center it between the eyes. Taper to 5 sts wide at Rnds 21-23.
- Viewer’s left orange patch: With C, cover an irregular area beginning near the left ear base. Work 12 sts wide on Rnds 9-13, 10 sts wide on Rnds 14-17, and 6 sts wide on Rnds 18-21.
- Viewer’s right gray patch: With D, cover an irregular patch 7 sts wide on Rnds 10-14 and 9 sts wide on Rnds 15-18. Keep the lower edge uneven.
- Orange forehead streak: Add a 3-st-wide C streak just left of the white blaze from Rnds 8-12.
- Gray forehead streak: Add a 2-st-wide D streak just right of the white blaze from Rnds 8-11.
- Small black calico marks: With L, add three short diagonal stitches near the orange cheek patch and two near the gray cheek patch.
Nose, Mouth, Whiskers, and Eye Details
- Nose: With I, embroider a small triangle over 3 sts wide and 2 rounds tall at the center where the cheek pads meet.
- Mouth: With I, stitch one vertical line 2 rounds down from the nose, then two tiny curved stitches for the soft cat mouth.
- Whiskers: Use fine white thread. Add 3 whiskers on each side, each 1.5 inches long. Insert them through the cheek pads and knot securely inside the face fabric.
- Eye shine: Add one small white stitch at the upper outside edge of each eye if your safety eyes do not already have a highlight.
- Lashes: With L, add one tiny upward stitch at the outer corner of each eye.
Ears
The ears are triangular, slightly rounded at the base, and set high on the head. One ear carries the berry leaf decoration. Use cream for the main ear and add orange or gray touches to echo the calico face.

Sew each pink inner ear to one cream outer ear. Add a small C duplicate-stitch patch to the viewer’s left ear tip and a small D patch to the viewer’s right ear base. Sew ears to the head between Rnds 7 and 14, tilted outward.
Leaf and Berry Hair Decoration
The berry decoration sits near the viewer’s right ear. It includes small green knitted leaves and round berry bobbles in red, purple, and blue. Keep this cluster small so it decorates the ear without covering the cat’s face.

Sew the leaves first, arranging them like a tiny sprig. Sew the berries on top in a tight cluster. Place the decoration just below the outer edge of the viewer’s right ear.
Head-to-Body Assembly
Place the head on the ribbed neck with the eyes centered over the front bib. Pin first. The head should look large and round compared with the body, matching the soft kitten proportions. Sew around the neck twice for strength.
- Sew the lower head edge to the ribbed neck opening using A yarn.
- Keep the muzzle centered over the bib and between the shoulder straps.
- Add extra stitches at the back of the neck if the head tilts forward.
- Do not pull the neck too tight; the photo has a gentle, plush transition.

- Work the orange, gray, and white calico patches with duplicate stitch.
- Sew the green straps, tan buttons, and bib securely.
- Add all forest embroidery on the romper after the body is fully stuffed.
- Place sandals on the feet and stitch through the soles so they do not slip.
- Hang the satchel diagonally across the body, resting the bag at the right hip.
- Set the field journal, camera, straw hat, magnifying glass, tape roll, leaves, and moss around the finished doll.
Care Notes
Spot clean the cat with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not soak the doll because the stuffing, embroidery, buttons, and tiny accessories may shift. Let the piece air dry completely before storing or displaying.
- Keep away from pets that may chew buttons or cords.
- Use embroidered eyes instead of safety eyes if making for a young child.
- Store the hat separately so the brim keeps its shape.
- Keep the field journal and camera in a small pouch when not displayed.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
For long-term display, keep the knitted cat away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, especially on the orange calico patches, green embroidery, and straw hat. Dust gently with a soft brush. Store in a breathable cotton bag rather than plastic.
If the doll becomes flattened, reshape it by hand. Gently roll the head between your palms, lift the ears back into position, and smooth the romper embroidery. Avoid heavy steam on the face because it can loosen embroidery and soften the sculpted cheeks.
- Clean stains immediately with cool water on a cloth.
- Do not machine wash.
- Do not tumble dry.
- Keep accessories dry and flat.
- Check buttons, straps, and small props occasionally and restitch if needed.
