Important Construction Notes
Use a firm gauge so the stuffing does not show. The toy in the picture has rounded, smooth shaping, so stuff the head and body gradually instead of forcing all stuffing in at the end.
All leopard spots are added after knitting by duplicate stitch and small satin stitches. This keeps the body smooth and makes the irregular spotted pattern easier to place exactly around the face, arms, and legs.
For the clean seated look, the legs are knitted first, then joined into the shorts and body. The head is sewn on last with the chin slightly tucked down, giving the cub the gentle garden-doll expression shown in the image.

Hat Berries and Leaves
- Make 3 green leaves using the leaf pattern from the flower crown.
- For each berry, CO 4 sts with burgundy, purple, red, or blue yarn. Knit 3 rows, cut yarn, gather the edges into a tiny ball, and secure.
- Make 7 berries total and cluster them on the front right side of the hat brim.
- Sew the leaves behind the berries so the tips peek outward.
Optional Tail
The pictured cub is seated with the tail hidden, so this tail is optional. Add it only if you want a small back detail that does not show from the front.
- With golden tan yarn, CO 10 sts and join in the round.
- Rnds 1 through 20: k all 10 sts.
- Rnd 21: k2tog around. 5 sts.
- Cut yarn, pull closed, and stuff lightly.
- Embroider 6 dark brown spots along the tail.
- Sew to the back of the shorts, angled downward so it stays mostly hidden when the cub sits.
Main Assembly
- Sew the head to the body using the long green neck tail. The head should tilt slightly forward, with the muzzle centered over the vest opening.
- Sew the arms to the upper sides of the green shirt at rnds 25 through 29 of the body. Angle each arm downward so the paws rest beside the vest.
- Dress the cub in the cream vest. Center the back seam and let the two front edges remain slightly open.
- Place the crossbody strap over the left shoulder and across the chest. Sew the pouch at the cub’s right hip.
- Sew the shoes flat against the lower legs so the brown oval soles face forward when the cub sits.
- Bend the legs gently at the upper shorts line and tack each thigh to the body with 2 hidden stitches so the seated pose stays stable.
- Attach the flower crown pieces after the ears are secure, so the flowers overlap naturally.
- Place the picnic basket, sandwich stack, and straw hat near the cub for the complete garden picnic display.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check the face before tying final knots. The eyes should sit evenly, the muzzle should be centered, and the pink nose should point straight down toward the smile. Add extra cheek spots only after the ears and flowers are attached.
- Use small stitches to secure loose vest corners.
- Hide yarn tails inside the head or body with a tapestry needle.
- Brush the muzzle gently with your fingers to smooth the cream stitches.
- Make sure the ladybug, flowers, and berries are firmly sewn in place.
Care Notes
This knitted cub is best used as a decorative handmade plush. If safety eyes or buttons are used, keep the finished item away from babies, toddlers, and pets. For a child-safe version, embroider the eyes and buttons instead.
- Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if the doll includes safety eyes, buttons, or wired props.
- Reshape the ears, muzzle, shoes, and hat while damp.
- Dry flat on a towel away from direct sunlight.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The head is round, large, and slightly wider than the body.
- The cream muzzle is oval and centered below the eyes.
- The dark leopard spots are uneven and placed on the head, arms, and legs.
- The vest has two embroidered vines, burgundy berries, and three buttons.
- The green shirt sleeves show above the golden arms.
- The brown shorts sit below the vest and above the spotted legs.
- The pouch crosses from left shoulder to right hip.
- The flower crown includes two flowers, leaves, and one ladybug.
- The picnic basket has woven texture and a gingham cloth.
- The straw hat includes a brown band, leaves, and clustered berries.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the cub upright in a dry place. Keep it away from heavy moisture, direct heat, and long periods of strong sunlight, because these can fade the yarn and flatten the stuffing.
To remove dust, use a soft clean brush and work gently around the flower crown, vest embroidery, and basket details. Do not pull on the embroidered vines or the small berry knots.
If the doll becomes compressed, massage the stuffing through the knitted fabric with clean hands. Support the neck while reshaping the head, then press the shoes flat so the cub returns to its seated picnic pose.
