Pattern Overview

The Chihuahua is knitted primarily in the round and assembled from separate shaped pieces. Her clothes and accessories are removable, except for the facial blaze, muzzle, eye surrounds, and embroidered details. The finished doll has a deliberately large head, slim body, long legs, and very large triangular ears to match the proportions shown in the reference image.

Important Construction Notes

Stuff every piece gradually instead of waiting until the end. The head should be firmly stuffed around the eyes and muzzle, but the neck area should remain slightly softer so the head can be positioned naturally. Keep all increases and decreases centered and symmetrical to preserve the Chihuahua’s rounded head and slender body shape.

When working small circumferences, divide the stitches evenly across three or four DPNs. Mark the beginning of each round. Unless otherwise stated, all pieces worked in the round are knitted continuously without joining turns.

Finish stuffing the head firmly. Add small amounts behind and beneath each eye to create the rounded eye sockets. Cut the yarn, thread it through the remaining stitches, pull tightly, and secure inside the head.

Cream Forehead Blaze

The central cream blaze is knitted flat and sewn onto the brown head. It begins wide at the crown, narrows slightly between the eyes, and widens again toward the muzzle.

  1. Row 1: With cream yarn and 2.5 mm needles, CO 15 sts.
  2. Rows 2-4: Work in st st, beginning with a purl row.
  3. Row 5: K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. 13 sts.

Block the blaze gently. Pin its upper edge approximately 1 inch below the crown closure. Center the narrow section between the eyes and allow the lower edge to disappear beneath the muzzle. Sew around the edge using small mattress stitches in cream yarn.

Eye Surrounds

Make two matching tan crescent-shaped pieces. These create the soft golden-tan markings around the upper and inner edges of the eyes.

  1. CO 14 sts in tan yarn.
  2. Row 1: Purl.
  3. Row 2: K1, M1L, k12, M1R, k1. 16 sts.
  4. Row 3: Purl.

  6. Row 5: Purl.
  7. Row 6: K1, ssk, k8, k2tog, k1. 12 sts.
  8. BO loosely.

Curve each piece around the upper inner side of one eye. Place the wider end above the eye and the tapered end toward the muzzle. Sew neatly without covering the glossy surface of the eye.

Muzzle

The muzzle is worked in cream yarn as one oval piece. It should project slightly from the face and cover the lower end of the forehead blaze.

  1. Rnd 1: CO 8 sts. Divide across DPNs.
  2. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st. 16 sts.

Insert the dark brown nose at the upper center of the muzzle. Embroider a short vertical line downward from the nose, then form a soft inverted Y for the mouth. Add one short curved stitch on each side to create the gentle Chihuahua expression.

Large Ears

Make two outer ears in cocoa brown and two inner ears in warm tan. The finished ears should be very large, upright, and slightly angled outward. Each ear is knitted flat from the base to the pointed tip.

Outer Ear Panels

  1. Row 1: With cocoa brown, CO 26 sts.
  2. Rows 2-5: Work in st st.
  3. Row 6: K1, M1L, knit to last st, M1R, k1. 28 sts.

  8. Continue decreasing two stitches on every fourth row until 16 sts remain.
  9. Then decrease two stitches on every RS row until 4 sts remain.
  10. Final row: K2tog twice. 2 sts.
  11. Pass the first stitch over the second, cut the yarn, and secure.

Inner Ear Panels

  1. Row 1: With warm tan, CO 22 sts.
  2. Rows 2-5: Work in st st.
  3. Row 6: K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. 20 sts.
  4. Repeat the decrease row every fourth row until 14 sts remain.
  5. Decrease two stitches on every RS row until 4 sts remain.
  6. K2tog twice, then pass one stitch over the other.

Pin one inner panel centrally onto each outer panel, leaving a cocoa border approximately 0.25 inch wide. Sew around the inner panel with tan yarn. Place the two ear layers with wrong sides together and seam around the outer edges.

Insert a narrow strip of pipe cleaner or folded craft wire inside each ear for stability. Cover all wire ends with tape before insertion. Lightly pad the lower half with a thin layer of stuffing, leaving the upper tip flat.

Position the ears between Rnds 31 and 38 of the head. Angle each ear outward approximately 25 degrees. The inner lower corners should be about 1.5 inches apart. Sew the bases securely across two rows of head stitches so the ears remain upright.

Body

The body is worked from the neck downward in cream yarn. It remains slim through the chest and widens gently at the hips to support the skirt.

  1. Rnd 1: CO 24 sts.
  2. Rnd 2: Knit all sts.

  13. Rnd 30: Repeat k3, k2tog around. 24 sts.

Stuff the body firmly through the hips and more lightly around the upper chest. Leave a long tail. Position the neck opening of the body inside the head opening by approximately 0.5 inch. Sew around twice using strong yarn, checking that the face points directly forward.

Arms

Make two. The arms have cream paws and upper sections that remain hidden beneath the sweater sleeves.

  1. Rnd 1: With cream yarn, CO 12 sts.
  2. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st. 24 sts.
  3. Rnds 3-6: Knit all 24 sts.

  7. Rnds 13-28: Knit all 16 sts.
  8. Rnd 29: Repeat k2, k2tog around. 12 sts.

Stuff the paw firmly and the upper arm lightly. Flatten the top opening and close it with a three-needle bind-off or whipstitch. Embroider three short tan lines on the lower front of each paw to suggest toes.

Legs

Make two identical long cream legs. The lower portion fits inside the knitted shoes, while the upper part is attached beneath the skirt.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For ordinary dust, use a clean, soft makeup brush and work gently in the direction of the knitted stitches. Support the ears and decorative stems while brushing so they are not bent or pulled away from the head.

For a small mark, dampen a white cloth with cool water and a tiny amount of gentle wool detergent. Blot the area without rubbing. Remove soap with a second damp cloth, reshape the stitches, and allow the piece to dry naturally in a ventilated room.

Store the doll upright or seated in a breathable box lined with acid-free tissue. Do not compress the ears, bow, skirt pleats, or floral decorations. Keep the miniature tea set and hat in a separate compartment so they cannot press against the doll during storage.
