Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

  • Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate. The pattern uses knitting in the round, simple flat pieces, stranded colorwork, basic cables, short shaping sections, embroidery, seaming, and small stuffed accessories.
  • Finished seated height: Approximately 15.5 inches or 39 cm from the lower body to the top of the head, excluding the ears.
  • Approximate standing length: 20 inches or 51 cm from the top of the head to the bottom of the slippers.
  • Construction: The dog is made from separate knitted head, muzzle, body, arm, leg, ear, face-patch, clothing, and accessory pieces. Most toy pieces are knitted in the round and firmly stuffed.
  • Important sizing note: Maintain the stated gauge for the head and body. Knit the clothing with slightly relaxed tension so it can be fitted over the stuffed doll without stretching the colorwork.

Materials

  • DK-weight yarn in warm cream for the head, muzzle, paws, legs, eye surrounds, sweater motifs, slippers, saucers, and pastry cream.
  • DK-weight yarn in matte black for the left facial patch, both inner ears, left outer ear, nose, pupils, collar, ladybug details, and embroidery.
  • DK-weight yarn in golden tan for the right facial patch, right outer ear, small mushroom, and garden hat.
  • DK-weight yarn in pale sage green for cardigan ribbing, cardigan bands, floral leaves, slipper motifs, and clover decoration.
  • DK-weight yarn in dusty blue for cardigan flowers and slipper colorwork.
  • DK-weight yarn in dark forest green for additional leaf details and flower centers.
  • DK-weight yarn in rust brown for the sleeveless sweater and small decorative accents.
  • DK-weight yarn in medium brown for the trousers, slipper straps, bows, satchel, and hat band details.
  • DK-weight yarn in dark brown for slipper soles, satchel edging, pastry crust, and selected embroidery.
  • Small amounts of red, white, yellow, pink, and deep burgundy DK yarn for the mushrooms, daisy, ladybug, hat flowers, jam, and pastry.
  • US size 3 or 3.25 mm double-pointed needles or a long circular needle for magic-loop knitting.
  • US size 2.5 or 3 mm needles for clothing, facial appliques, and small accessories.
  • US size 1.5 or 2.5 mm needles for tiny decorations when a firm fabric is preferred.
  • One cable needle.
  • Polyester toy stuffing.
  • Two 14 mm glossy black safety eyes, or black yarn for fully embroidered eyes.
  • Three 10 mm wooden buttons for the cardigan.
  • Two 9 mm wooden buttons for the slipper straps.
  • One 8 mm gold or mustard button for the black collar.
  • One small button for the satchel flap, if desired.
  • Black embroidery thread for the mouth, eyelashes, eyebrows, whiskers, and ladybug markings.
  • White embroidery thread for eye highlights and mushroom spots.
  • Matching sewing yarn, tapestry needle, stitch markers, pins, and row counter.
  • Optional flexible drinking straw, foam rod, or tightly rolled felt for internal neck support.
  • Optional clear nylon cord for reinforcing the garden-hat brim.

Gauge

Using US size 3 or 3.25 mm needles in stockinette stitch, the recommended gauge is 24 stitches and 32 rounds per 4 inches or 10 cm. The knitted fabric should be firm enough that stuffing does not show through the stitches.

Using US size 2.5 or 3 mm needles for the clothing, aim for approximately 26 stitches and 34 rows per 4 inches or 10 cm. Check the cardigan against the stuffed body before completing the shoulder seams.

Important Construction Notes

  • Leave yarn tails measuring at least 10 inches or 25 cm on all body pieces. These tails can be used for neat and secure assembly.
  • Stuff the head firmly, especially around the cheeks and crown. Keep the muzzle slightly softer so it remains rounded rather than becoming rigid.
  • Place all facial pieces with pins before sewing. The large eyes and asymmetrical patches create the distinctive expression shown in the reference design.
  • When working stranded colorwork, carry unused yarn loosely across the back. Catch floats longer than four stitches to prevent snagging.
  • The dog is designed to sit. Keep the upper legs firm, the knee areas lightly stuffed, and the feet moderately firm so the slippers retain their shape.

Care Notes

  • Keep the finished doll away from open flames, direct heaters, and prolonged strong sunlight.
  • The wooden buttons, safety eyes, long whiskers, and small tea accessories make this design most suitable as a decorative collectible rather than a toy for children under three years old.
  • Support the head and satchel when moving the display. Do not lift the doll by the ears, mushroom decorations, cardigan, or crossbody strap.
  • Reshape the ears, hat brim, slippers, and cardigan while slightly damp if they become flattened during storage.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Check that the cream forehead blaze remains visible between the black and tan facial patches.
  • Confirm that the right ear has a golden-tan outer panel and black inner panel, while the left ear is completely black.
  • Verify that both eyes are securely attached and the pupils face forward.
  • Check that the muzzle is centered, the nose is evenly stuffed, and the mouth line is symmetrical.
  • Confirm that the cardigan contains sage ribbing, cream cable panels, blue flowers, green leaves, three buttons, and the red ladybug brooch.
  • Make sure the trouser cuffs sit above the slippers and the knee bends allow the dog to remain seated.
  • Check that the slippers include brown soles, blue and sage colorwork, bows, ankle straps, and buttons.
  • Confirm that the satchel hangs at the right hip and displays the pale-green four-leaf clover.
  • Arrange the golden garden hat, teacup, saucer, pastry, and plate beside the seated dog.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For routine cleaning, remove loose dust with a soft cosmetic brush or a vacuum cleaner set to low suction. Cover the vacuum nozzle with clean mesh so small accessories cannot be pulled away.

For a small mark, press the area gently with a white cloth dampened with cool water and a drop of mild wool detergent. Do not rub the colorwork, embroidered face, wooden buttons, or stuffed muzzle.

If deeper cleaning is required, remove the hat, satchel, teacup, saucers, plate, and pastry. Hand-wash removable knitted accessories separately in cool water. Avoid soaking the stuffed doll unless every attached component is fully washable.

After spot cleaning, blot excess moisture with a dry towel. Reshape the head, muzzle, ears, cardigan, trousers, slippers, and accessories. Allow everything to air-dry completely on a flat surface away from direct sunlight.

For long-term storage, wrap the doll loosely in acid-free tissue and place it in a breathable container. Avoid sealed plastic bags in humid conditions. Store the hat flat and place the tea accessories in a small separate box to prevent crushing.
