Pattern Overview
The dachshund is knitted mainly in the round to create a smooth finish with minimal visible seams. The vest, accessories, facial patches, flower petals, hatband, and bag pieces are worked flat. All measurements and placement instructions are designed for the finished size and gauge listed below.
- Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate.
- Construction: Head, body, limbs, ears, hat, clothing, and accessories are made separately and assembled.
- Finished height: Approximately 17 inches, or 43 centimeters, from the soles to the top of the head.
- Finished head width: Approximately 5 inches, or 13 centimeters.
- Finished body circumference: Approximately 10 inches, or 25 centimeters.
- Needle style: Double-pointed needles, magic-loop circular needles, and straight needles may all be used.
- Working method: Main pieces are knitted in the round unless a section specifically says to work flat.
Materials
- DK-weight yarn in medium gray for the head, ears, arms, and body.
- DK-weight yarn in warm tan for the muzzle, eye patches, paws, ear tips, and feet.
- DK-weight yarn in oatmeal cream for the vest background and small flower details.
- DK-weight yarn in sage green and medium olive for vest motifs, ribbing, leaves, and trim.
- DK-weight yarn in rust, terracotta, brick red, and golden brown for autumn motifs and bags.
- DK-weight yarn in medium blue for the collar, heart tag, hatband, sandal straps, and heart pouch.
- Small amounts of white and yellow yarn for the flower crown.
- Small amounts of black yarn for the mouth, paw lines, and facial embroidery.
- Small amount of light blue yarn for the eye outlines.
- 2.75 millimeter knitting needles for the main doll and accessories.
- 2.5 millimeter needles for firm ribbing, small flowers, and narrow straps.
- Two 18-millimeter blue safety eyes with black pupils.
- One 18 to 20-millimeter black safety nose.
- Three small wooden or brown buttons measuring approximately 8 millimeters.
- Polyester fiberfill.
- Yarn needle, stitch markers, row counter, scissors, pins, and removable markers.
- Optional thin plastic canvas for strengthening the sandal soles and hat brim.
- Optional clear fabric glue for securing small decorative knots after sewing.
Gauge
Main gauge: 28 stitches and 38 rounds equal 4 inches in stockinette stitch using 2.75 millimeter needles. The fabric should be firm enough that the stuffing does not show between the stitches.
Adjust the needle size when necessary. A slightly smaller needle is better than a loose gauge for this project. Knit and wash a gauge swatch before beginning because a different gauge will change the fit of the vest, trousers, hat, collar, and sandals.

Important Construction Notes
- Place a marker at the beginning of every round and move it upward as the work progresses.
- Stuff the pieces gradually. Small portions of stuffing produce a smoother shape than one large amount.
- Use mattress stitch for flat seams and whipstitch for attaching shaped pieces.
- Keep all colorwork floats relaxed so the vest remains flexible enough to fit around the body.
- When changing colors, twist the two strands together on the wrong side to prevent holes.
- Safety eyes and noses are not recommended for toys intended for children younger than three years.

Make the second panel. Embroider six evenly spaced white French knots on the front panel. Place the panels together and sew around the edges, adding a very small amount of stuffing before closing.
For the handle, CO 4 sts and knit 28 rows. BO and sew one end to each upper heart lobe. Place the handle around the left paw and tack it invisibly so the pouch remains in position.
Knitted Sandals
Make two sandals. Each sandal has a double-layer oval sole, blue toe edge, blue ankle strap, and a small autumn leaf or acorn decoration.
Oval Sole
Make four identical sole pieces, using two for each foot.

- Rows 1-34: Knit all 6 sts.
- Row 35: BO all sts.
Wrap one strap around each ankle above the foot. Overlap the ends at the outer side and sew securely. Tack the lower edge of the strap to the sandal sole at the inner and outer sides.
Autumn Sandal Decorations
For the left sandal, knit a tiny rust acorn using the hat acorn instructions with half the stitch and round counts. For the right sandal, make one sage leaf using the flower crown leaf instructions.
Sew the acorn to the outer side of the left ankle strap and the leaf to the outer side of the right strap.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
- Confirm that the head, muzzle, ears, body, limbs, and feet are firmly stuffed and symmetrically positioned.
- Embroider a straight black line downward from the nose for approximately four knitted rounds.
- Divide the lower end of the line into two shallow curved mouth lines, each extending four stitches outward.
- Add two tiny black stitches at the outer ends of the smile to soften the expression.
- Sew the head securely to the neck using two complete rounds of hidden stitching.
- Dress the doll in the trousers first, followed by the vest, collar, and sandals.
- Place the satchel strap over the left shoulder and secure the bag at the right hip.
- Attach the blue heart pouch to the left paw.
- Secure the flower crown between the ears.
- Display the acorn hat beside the doll or place it gently over the flower crown without crushing the flowers.
Care Notes
Spot-clean the doll with cool water and a mild detergent. Avoid soaking the safety eyes, safety nose, buttons, reinforced hat brim, and sandal soles. Blot excess moisture with a clean towel and reshape every knitted section before air-drying.
Do not machine wash or tumble dry the completed doll. Heat and vigorous movement may distort the colorwork, loosen small decorations, flatten the flower crown, or damage internal reinforcements.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish

- The trousers have equal leg lengths and evenly rolled cuffs.
- The feet sit flat inside the sandals.
- The flower crown is centered across the forehead.
- The collar and heart tag lie flat without twisting.
- The satchel rests at the right hip and the strap crosses the chest diagonally.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Remove loose surface dust with a soft, clean brush. Support the ears, flowers, and accessories with one hand while brushing so the attachment points are not strained.
For a small stain, dampen a white cloth with cool water and diluted wool-safe detergent. Dab the area without rubbing. Use a second damp cloth to remove the soap, then blot with a dry towel.
Air-dry the doll horizontally in a shaded, ventilated place. Reposition the ears, paws, vest edges, hat brim, bags, flowers, and sandal straps while they are still slightly damp.
Store the dachshund away from direct sunlight, humidity, smoke, and strong odors. Place acid-free tissue around the flower crown and hat brim when storing the doll for an extended period.
Inspect the buttons, safety features, bag straps, crown, and sandal decorations regularly. Repair loose parts immediately with matching yarn and secure stitches before displaying or handling the doll again.
