Important Pattern Notes

Work most pieces in continuous spirals unless a section says to join. Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of every round. Stuff the head, body, muzzle, legs, and arms firmly enough to hold the rounded shape, but do not overstuff the ears, hat brim, clothing, bag, or small accessories.

The mouse in the photo has a large head, slim body, long tapered muzzle, rounded cheeks, oversized circular ears, narrow arms, long gray legs, pink hands and toes, and a thin pink tail. The outfit sits over the body instead of being only color changes, so the shirt and overalls are crocheted as wearable-looking layers.

For neat stripes, always change color in the last yarn-over of the stitch before the new color begins. Carry unused yarn inside the overalls only when the stripe changes are close together. For the cleanest look, cut and weave ends on visible accessories.

Color Plan

  • Mouse body: Medium gray.
  • Inner ears, nose, hands, feet, tail: Dusty pink.
  • Eye patches and shirt: White.

  • Hat: Royal blue crown and brim, yellow band, white daisy with yellow center.
  • Bag: Yellow sunflower petals, brown center, yellow strap.
  • Patches: Red hearts on bib and lower pant leg.
  • Sandals: Tan sole and brown straps, with a small pink flower on one strap.
  • Props: Brown flowerpot with green sprout, beige watering can.

Long Mouse Muzzle

The muzzle points forward from the center of the face and narrows at the pink nose. Start with dusty pink for the nose, then change to gray. Stuff lightly near the tip and more firmly at the base.

  1. With dusty pink, R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. R4: sc around. 18 sts.
  5. Change to medium gray.
  6. R5: BLO sc around. 18 sts. This creates the nose-to-muzzle ridge.
  7. R6: sc 2, inc, repeat around. 24 sts.
  8. R7: sc around. 24 sts.
  9. R8: sc 3, inc, repeat around. 30 sts.
  10. R9-R11: sc around. 30 sts.
  11. R12: sc 9, inc, sc 10, inc, sc 9. 32 sts.

  13. R15: sc 6, dec, repeat around. 28 sts.
  14. Sl st in next st. FO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Pin the muzzle to the lower front of the head, with the pink nose pointing slightly upward. The top of the muzzle should sit between R13 and R15 of the head. The lower edge should sit around R20. Sew around the base slowly, adding a little extra stuffing before closing.

Cheeks and Smile

The photo shows rounded cheeks and a small open smile beneath the muzzle. Use gray for soft cheek pads and black or dark brown embroidery for the smile line.

  1. Make 2 cheek pads in medium gray.
  2. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  3. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  4. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 18 sts.
  5. R4: sc around. 18 sts.
  6. Sl st, FO, leaving a long tail.

Flatten each cheek slightly. Sew one cheek to each side of the muzzle base, angled downward. The cheeks should touch the lower side of the eye patch area and create the smiling mouse face.

With dark brown embroidery thread, stitch a curved smile under the muzzle from one cheek to the other. Add a short pink line just inside the smile for the mouth opening. Keep the mouth small so it looks cheerful, not oversized.

Eye Patches and Eyes

The mouse has two large white oval eye patches placed close together above the muzzle. The black eyes sit low and forward on the patches, giving the face a surprised garden-helper expression.

Make 2 White Eye Ovals

  1. Ch 7 with white yarn.
  2. R1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 5, 3 sc in last ch. Work on the other side of the chain: sc 4, inc in last st. 14 sts.
  3. R2: inc, sc 4, inc in next 3 sts, sc 4, inc in next 2 sts. 20 sts.
  4. R3: sc 1, inc, sc 5, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc, sc 5, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc. 26 sts.
  5. Sl st to next st. FO, leaving a sewing tail.

Insert one 10 mm safety eye into each white oval before sewing. Place each safety eye slightly lower than the center of the white oval. Pin the patches above the muzzle, touching or almost touching at the inner edges. Sew them securely with white yarn.

Ears

The ears are large and round with gray backs and dusty pink inner circles. They sit high on the sides of the head and lean outward slightly, like the photo.

  5. R5: sc 3, inc, repeat around. 30 sts.
  6. R6: sc 4, inc, repeat around. 36 sts.
  7. Sl st, FO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Sew each pink inner ear onto the center of a gray outer ear. Use small stitches around the pink edge. Do not stuff the ears. Pin ears to the head between R8 and R17, with the lower edge slightly behind the cheek line. The ears should angle out at about 35 degrees. Sew firmly along the lower third of each ear, leaving the top edge softly cupped.

  16. Flatten the top opening and sc 5 through both layers to close. FO.

Leg Two

Repeat Leg One, but do not fasten off after closing if you want to crochet the legs directly to the body. For this pattern, sew the legs separately so the shorts hang naturally. Sew the tops of the legs to the lower front of the body between R24 and R28, spaced 4 stitches apart.

Toe Details

Use dusty pink yarn and a yarn needle. On each foot, make three raised toe stitches across the front. Place the stitches from left to right over R2-R4 of the foot. Pull gently so the foot forms three rounded toes like the image.

Arms

The arms are slim gray sleeves with pink hands. They hang down along the body, with the hands near the sides of the overalls.

Make 2 Arms

Stuff only the hand and lower half of the gray arm. Leave the upper sleeve flatter so it can sit close to the body. Sew arms to the sides of the body at R7-R9, angled downward. The white sleeve caps should touch the white shirt area.

Tail

The mouse has a long slim pink tail extending from the back and curving to one side. Work it as a narrow tube.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Keep the finished mouse away from direct sunlight for long periods, especially if you used bright yellow and blue cotton yarn. Strong sunlight can fade the stripes and make the dusty pink details look pale.

To remove dust, use a soft makeup brush or clean paintbrush. Brush gently around the eyes, muzzle, hat flower, sunflower petals, and sandal straps. Avoid pulling on the whiskers.

For storage, place the doll in a breathable cotton bag or a display box. Do not press heavy items against the ears or hat brim. Store the flowerpot and watering can beside the doll so the small shapes do not get flattened.

If the overalls or bag strap shift over time, gently reposition them and add one or two hidden stitches with matching yarn. This keeps the garden mouse looking neat while preserving the handmade texture.
