Knitting Tutorial: Colorful Puppy in Striped Overalls – Free Knitting Pattern

This cheerful knitted puppy is made with a rounded white head, soft floppy ears in two different colors, a brown eye patch, a chunky chocolate nose, striped yellow-and-blue sleeves, denim-style striped overalls, red sneakers, a yellow crossbody bag, cherry hair decoration, a matching striped hat, and two tiny toy accessories. The finished doll is designed to stand as a colorful display piece with a handmade garden-party feeling.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern creates a standing knitted puppy doll with a large oval head, short rounded body, separate arms and legs, layered clothing, and miniature accessories. The puppy has a white plush-style face, one brown rectangular eye patch, one red ear, one green ear, black bead eyes, and a textured dark brown nose.

The outfit is built in layers. The body starts as a white stuffed doll base, then the striped sweater and overall pieces are knitted separately and fitted over the body. The overalls use denim blue and darker blue stripes, while the sweater sleeves use alternating teal-blue and golden-yellow bands.

The accessories are small but important. The yellow bag hangs diagonally from the left shoulder to the right hip. The matching striped hat sits beside the puppy, topped with a dense pom-pom. A tiny beehive and honey bucket complete the scene.

Finished Size

  • Puppy doll height: about 11 in / 28 cm from shoe sole to top of head.
  • Head width: about 4.25 in / 11 cm at the widest point.
  • Body height without head: about 5.75 in / 14.5 cm including legs and shoes.
  • Hat height: about 3 in / 7.5 cm including pom-pom.
  • Yellow bag: about 1.75 in / 4.5 cm wide and 1.5 in / 4 cm tall.
  • Mini beehive: about 1.5 in / 4 cm tall.
  • Honey bucket: about 1.4 in / 3.5 cm tall.

Skill Level

Intermediate beginner to intermediate. The doll uses basic increases, decreases, seaming, color changes, picking up stitches, small embroidery details, and simple shaping. A confident beginner can make it slowly by following the stitch counts exactly.

  • Ribbing: 24 sts and 32 rows = 4 in / 10 cm with US 3 needles.

Construction Notes

The puppy is knitted mostly flat and seamed. This makes the pattern easier to control and gives a smooth plush-doll look. Stuff each piece firmly but not hard. The face should stay rounded, the body should stay upright, and the legs should be strong enough to support the overalls and shoes.

When changing colors for stripes, twist the yarns neatly at the edge. For the sleeves, hat, and overalls, carry unused colors up the side only when the gap is two rows or less. For longer sections, cut the yarn and weave ends inside the piece.

  • Head shape: large oval, wider at cheeks, slightly narrower at top.
  • Body shape: compact cylinder, hidden under sweater and overalls.
  • Legs: short and rounded, covered by striped overall legs.
  • Arms: white hands with striped sleeves.
  • Ears: one red floppy ear on the left side, one green floppy ear on the right side.
  • Face: brown patch above the right side of face, small black eyes, large dark brown nose.

White Puppy Head

The head is the main focal point. It is knitted as a large oval panel pair, then seamed and stuffed. Keep the side seams smooth because the ears attach over the upper side edges.

Head Back Panel

Make the back panel exactly the same as the front panel in white. Do not add the face patch to the back. The back should remain plain white so the red and green ears stand out clearly on both sides.

Brown Eye Patch

The patch is a soft rectangle with slightly uneven knitted edges, placed above the puppy’s right eye from the viewer’s perspective. It sits high on the forehead and reaches down toward the eye line.

  1. With tan brown yarn and US 4 needles, CO 12 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 2: Work in St st, beginning with a K row.
  3. Row 3: K1, M1, K10, M1, K1. 14 sts.
  4. Rows 4 to 11: Work 8 rows in St st.

  6. Row 13: K all sts.
  7. Row 14: P all sts.
  8. BO all sts loosely.

Pin the patch to the head front before seaming the head. Position it on the upper right face, about 9 rows below the head top and 4 stitches away from the center line. Sew with small whipstitches using tan brown yarn.

Joining and Stuffing the Head

  1. Place head front and head back with wrong sides together.
  2. Use mattress stitch around the outer edge, beginning at the lower left side.
  3. Seam around the head, leaving a 1.5 in opening at the lower neck edge.
  4. Stuff the upper head first, then the cheeks, then the lower muzzle area.
  5. Add extra stuffing at the lower front to create the round cheeky muzzle shape.
  6. Close the opening firmly.
  7. Shape the face by gently squeezing the sides so the head becomes oval, not flat.

Muzzle and Nose

The image shows a large rounded dark brown nose sitting low in the center of the face. It is not a flat embroidery only; it has raised texture, like a small stuffed knitted oval.

Dark Brown Nose

  1. With dark brown yarn and US 4 needles, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: P all sts.
  3. Row 2: K1, M1, K6, M1, K1. 10 sts.
  4. Row 3: P all sts.
  5. Row 4: K1, M1, K8, M1, K1. 12 sts.
  6. Rows 5 to 8: Work in St st.
  7. Row 9: P2tog, P8, P2tog. 10 sts.
  8. Row 10: K2tog, K6, K2tog. 8 sts.
  9. Break yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull tight, and seam into an oval cup.
  10. Add a tiny pinch of stuffing before closing the back.

Sew the nose to the lower center of the face. The top of the nose should sit about 8 rows below the eyes. Use dark brown yarn to add 5 vertical satin stitches across the nose for the ribbed texture seen in the photo.

Eyes and Face Details

  • Attach two 8 mm black safety eyes or bead eyes.
  • Place the left eye on the white face, about 23 rows above the lower neck edge.
  • Place the right eye over the lower edge of the tan patch, matching the image.
  • Space eyes about 1.25 in / 3 cm apart.
  • Use black yarn to make one tiny straight stitch under each eye for shine depth, if desired.

Do not add a mouth. The image uses the large nose and small glossy eyes as the main expression. Keeping the mouth absent gives the puppy the same calm, plush, handmade look.

Floppy Ears

The ears are long, soft, and different colors. The puppy’s left ear is red and hangs close to the side of the head. The puppy’s right ear is green and hangs longer, dropping almost to the shoulder.

Red Left Ear

  1. With red yarn and US 4 needles, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: P all sts.
  3. Row 2: K1, M1, K6, M1, K1. 10 sts.
  4. Row 3: P all sts.
  5. Row 4: K1, M1, K8, M1, K1. 12 sts.
  6. Rows 5 to 20: Work in St st.
  7. Row 21: P all sts.
  8. Row 22: K2, SSK, K4, K2tog, K2. 10 sts.

  10. Row 24: K2, SSK, K2, K2tog, K2. 8 sts.
  11. Row 25: P all sts.
  12. Row 26: K2, SSK, K2tog, K2. 6 sts.
  13. BO all sts.

Green Right Ear

  1. With leaf green yarn and US 4 needles, CO 9 sts.
  2. Row 1: P all sts.
  3. Row 2: K1, M1, K7, M1, K1. 11 sts.
  4. Row 3: P all sts.
  5. Row 4: K1, M1, K9, M1, K1. 13 sts.
  6. Rows 5 to 24: Work in St st.
  7. Row 25: P all sts.
  8. Row 26: K2, SSK, K5, K2tog, K2. 11 sts.
  9. Row 27: P all sts.
  10. Row 28: K2, SSK, K3, K2tog, K2. 9 sts.
  11. Row 29: P all sts.
  12. Row 30: K2, SSK, K1, K2tog, K2. 7 sts.
  13. Row 31: P all sts.
  14. Row 32: K2, SSK, K2tog, K1. 5 sts.
  15. BO all sts.

Ear Edging and Attachment

  • With matching yarn, pick up and knit 1 stitch in each edge row around each ear.
  • Knit 1 round or 2 flat rows in garter stitch around the edge if working flat.
  • BO loosely so the ear does not curl too tightly.
  • Sew the red ear to the upper left side of the head, angled downward.
  • Sew the green ear to the upper right side, slightly forward, so it frames the cheek.

White Body Base

The body is a simple stuffed base because the sweater and overalls cover most of it. Make it firm and narrow enough for the clothing to fit. The neck should be short but stable so the large head sits upright.

  1. With white yarn and US 4 needles, CO 20 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Work in St st.
  3. Row 5: K2, M1, K16, M1, K2. 22 sts.
  4. Row 6: P all sts.
  5. Row 7: K2, M1, K18, M1, K2. 24 sts.
  6. Rows 8 to 24: Work in St st.
  7. Row 25: K2, SSK, K16, K2tog, K2. 22 sts.
  8. Row 26: P all sts.
  9. Row 27: K2, SSK, K14, K2tog, K2. 20 sts.
  10. Rows 28 to 32: Work in St st.
  11. BO all sts.

Make a second body panel the same way. Seam the sides and bottom, leaving the top open. Stuff firmly. Close the top with a flat seam. Sew the head to the body using a strong ladder stitch around the neck, going around twice for stability.

Legs

The legs are short white tubes that sit inside the overall legs and shoes. Knit two. Stuff them firmly at the bottom and lightly at the top so they bend naturally.

  1. With white yarn and US 4 needles, CO 14 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 18: Work in St st.
  3. Row 19: K2tog across. 7 sts.
  4. Break yarn, thread through remaining sts, and pull tight for the foot end.
  5. Seam the back of the leg.
  6. Stuff the leg, keeping the top slightly soft.
  7. Make the second leg the same.

Sew the legs to the lower body, spacing them about 0.5 in / 1.3 cm apart. Angle the feet slightly outward so the red sneakers stand flat and visible.

White Hands

The hands are small mitten shapes peeking out below the striped sleeves. Make two pieces.

  1. With white yarn and US 4 needles, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: P all sts.
  3. Row 2: K1, M1, K6, M1, K1. 10 sts.
  4. Rows 3 to 8: Work in St st.
  5. Row 9: P2tog across. 5 sts.
  6. Break yarn, pull through remaining sts, and seam the side.
  7. Stuff very lightly.

Striped Sweater Body

The sweater neck is a thick ribbed blue collar. The visible sweater section under the overalls shows bold teal-blue and golden-yellow horizontal stripes. Knit the sweater body as a short tube-like panel that wraps around the torso.

Sweater Back and Front Panel

  1. With teal blue yarn and US 3 needles, CO 34 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 6: Work K1, P1 rib across.
  3. Change to US 4 needles.

  7. Rows 13 to 14: With golden yellow, work St st.
  8. Rows 15 to 18: With teal blue, work St st.
  9. BO all sts.

Wrap this panel around the upper body under the head. Seam at the back. The ribbed collar should rise around the lower head like a cozy turtleneck.

Striped Sleeves and Arms

Each arm combines a striped sleeve and a white hand. The arms hang naturally downward, slightly away from the body, with the hands visible beneath the sleeve cuffs.

Sleeves

  1. With teal blue yarn and US 4 needles, CO 16 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 2: Work St st in teal blue.
  3. Rows 3 to 4: Work St st in golden yellow.
  4. Rows 5 to 6: Work St st in teal blue.

  8. Row 14: P all sts.
  9. Rows 15 to 16: Work St st in teal blue.
  10. BO all sts.
  11. Make a second sleeve the same.

Seam each sleeve into a tube. Insert one white hand into the lower sleeve opening and sew around the cuff with teal blue yarn. Lightly stuff the sleeve, then sew the upper sleeve to the shoulder area.

Striped Denim Overalls

The overalls are the most detailed clothing piece. They have a striped denim look, short pant legs, a front bib, two straps with buttons, and darker blue horizontal bands. The fit should be snug but not tight.

Left Overall Leg

  1. With dark denim blue yarn and US 3 needles, CO 22 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Work K1, P1 rib.

Pom-Pom

  • Wrap teal blue and golden yellow yarn together around three fingers 45 times.
  • Tie tightly in the center with strong yarn.
  • Cut loops and trim into a round pom-pom about 1.25 in / 3 cm wide.
  • Sew to the top of the hat securely.

For the photographed look, place the hat on the table beside the puppy rather than on the head. The hat should lean slightly and show its ribbed brim at the bottom.

Mini Beehive Accessory

The small golden beehive sits near the hat. It has rounded horizontal ridges and a black doorway at the front bottom.

  • Make 5 vertical satin stitches, then outline with one curved stitch.
  • Keep the door about 0.35 in / 1 cm wide.

Mini Honey Bucket

The honey bucket is brown with a golden honey bow or drip on the front. It sits beside the beehive and should be short, round, and slightly rustic.

Bucket Rim and Honey Detail

  • With tan brown yarn, sew one horizontal line around the top rim.
  • With golden yellow yarn, embroider two hanging honey drips on the front.
  • Add one small bow-like loop at the upper center of the drips.

Assembly Order

  1. Knit and stuff the head first.
  2. Sew the tan eye patch to the head front before adding eyes if using safety eyes.
  3. Add the eyes and raised dark brown nose.
  4. Knit, shape, and attach the red and green ears.

  14. Knit the matching striped hat and accessories for the display scene.

Detailed Placement Guide

Use this guide to match the image closely. The puppy’s head is intentionally larger than the body, giving it a soft toy style. The head should be about 40 percent of the total height. The overalls should start high on the chest and stop above the red shoes.

  • Head to body angle: Sew the head straight, with only a tiny forward tilt.
  • Red ear: Attach on the puppy’s left side, hanging behind the cheek.
  • Green ear: Attach on the puppy’s right side, longer and more visible in front.
  • Eye patch: Place on the upper right face, not centered.
  • Nose: Center low on the face, rounded and raised.
  • Bag strap: Run from left shoulder to right hip across the bib.
  • Buttons: Place at the upper corners of the overall bib.
  • Hat: Display beside the puppy with brim touching the surface.

Color Change Tips

The colorful look depends on clean stripes. Use firm tension when changing between teal blue, golden yellow, medium denim, and dark denim. Loose floats can show through or make the sweater look bulky.

  • Twist yarns once at the beginning of every stripe change.
  • Do not pull carried yarn too tightly along side seams.
  • Weave ends inside clothing pieces whenever possible.
  • Keep yellow stripes the same height on both sleeves.
  • Line up denim stripes at the front of the overalls before seaming.

Beginner-Friendly Knitting Notes

If you are newer to knitting toys, take your time with the small pieces. Small pieces can feel fiddly, but they give the finished puppy its charm. Count stitches after every increase and decrease row so the shaping stays even.

Use removable stitch markers to mark the center of the head, center of the body, and center of the overall bib. Matching these center points before sewing helps the doll look balanced from the front.

  • Use mattress stitch for invisible side seams.
  • Use whipstitch for applique pieces like the patch and flowers.
  • Use backstitch for strong joins such as head-to-neck and leg-to-body seams.
  • Stuff small pieces with the blunt end of a knitting needle.
  • Pin all clothing pieces before final sewing.

Optional Stability Insert

If you want the puppy to stand more easily for display, cut two small oval pieces of thin cardboard or plastic canvas for the shoe soles. Insert one into each shoe before closing the lower seam. This helps the red sneakers stay flat on the table.

Do not use cardboard if the doll will be washed often. Plastic canvas is better for long-term durability. Keep the insert smaller than the shoe edge so it does not poke through the knitting.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face before tying off final ends. The eyes should sit evenly, the nose should be centered, and the tan patch should look like it belongs under the right eye. Add tiny white highlight stitches near the eyes only if you want extra sparkle.

  • Brush the white head very gently with your fingers to soften the surface.
  • Shape the nose by pressing it into a rounded oval.
  • Secure the cherry decoration with at least 5 hidden stitches.
  • Make sure both overall buttons are level.
  • Place the bag so it rests against the right side of the body.

Care Notes

Spot clean the finished puppy with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid soaking if you used buttons, a charm, cardboard shoe inserts, or glued details. Let the doll air-dry completely before storing or displaying.

  • Do not machine wash.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight to protect the bright colors.
  • Reshape the hat and ears by hand after cleaning.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Large white oval head is firmly stuffed.
  • Brown patch is sewn on the upper right face.
  • Dark brown raised nose is centered and textured.
  • Red ear hangs on one side and green ear hangs on the other.
  • Striped sweater collar sits close around the neck.
  • Overalls have visible denim stripes, bib, buttons, straps, and charm.
  • Yellow bag crosses the chest diagonally and has a white flower.
  • Red sneakers include white toe caps, black edging, laces, and flowers.
  • Hat has matching yellow and blue stripes with a pom-pom.
  • Beehive and honey bucket are placed beside the hat for the full display.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the knitted puppy upright in a dry place. If dust collects on the surface, use a soft clean brush and move in the direction of the stitches. Avoid pulling the ears, strap, cherries, or bag flap because they are decorative pieces.

For long-term storage, wrap the doll loosely in acid-free tissue or clean cotton fabric. Keep the red shoes and yellow bag from pressing too hard into the white body to prevent color transfer. Refresh the shape by gently fluffing the stuffing with your hands.

  • Use cold water only for light spot cleaning.
  • Blot moisture with a towel instead of rubbing.
  • Dry flat with the ears arranged neatly.
  • Check buttons and charms regularly if the doll is handled often.
  • Keep the small beehive and bucket in a labeled pouch when not displayed.

Your colorful puppy in striped overalls is complete when every small accessory is in place and the doll has the same bright, playful balance as the image: oversized white puppy head, mismatched floppy ears, bold blue-and-yellow stripes, cheerful red sneakers, sunny yellow bag, and tiny handmade display props.
