Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is written for a knitted amigurumi-style lion doll made mostly in the round. The body, head, arms, legs, muzzle, dress, bag, sandals, hat, flowers, and small accessories are shaped separately, then sewn together with firm mattress stitch and invisible seams.
The doll in the image has a large rounded head, a tall cream oval muzzle, close-set shiny eyes, a black rounded nose, a full looped mane, a simple blue dress, and handmade garden details. The finished toy is about 12 inches tall when seated, or about 14 inches from top of mane to sandal soles.
Skill Level
- Level: Confident beginner to intermediate.
- Main techniques: Knit, purl, increases, decreases, knitting in the round, short shaping, simple embroidery, looped mane hair, seaming, and small decorative appliqués.
- Construction style: Pieces are knitted separately, stuffed, shaped, and assembled.
Finished Size
- Seated height: About 12 inches from table to top of mane.
- Full length: About 14 inches from mane top to bottom of sandals.
- Head width: About 4.75 inches across before mane.
- Body width: About 3.75 inches across the dress.
- Leg length: About 4.5 inches each.
- Arm length: About 4 inches each.
Materials
- Worsted weight yarn in golden yellow for lion head, ears, arms, and legs.
- Worsted weight yarn in cream for muzzle, lower face, paws, and hand tips.
- Worsted weight yarn in rust brown for the curly looped mane.
- Worsted weight yarn in denim blue for the pinafore dress.
- Worsted weight yarn in white for puff sleeves and shirt shoulder area.
- Worsted weight yarn in tan or straw beige for hat brim, hat crown, shoulder bag, and sandal soles.
- Worsted weight yarn in green for sandal straps, hat ribbon, leaves, and plant sprout.
- Small amounts of yellow, dark brown, black, gray, and terracotta yarn for sunflower, nose, bag flower, watering can, flowerpot, and details.
- Pair of 8 mm safety eyes, or black buttons with white embroidery highlights.
- US size 4 double-pointed needles, or size needed to get a firm toy fabric.
- US size 3 needles for smaller accessories and tighter details.
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- Tapestry needle.
- Stitch markers.
- Scrap yarn for holding stitches.
- Small black embroidery thread for mouth curves and paw lines.
- Optional: 2 tiny wooden buttons for the dress straps.
Gauge
Gauge is important because the doll needs a firm fabric that does not show stuffing. Work a stockinette swatch using US size 4 needles. A good gauge is 6 stitches and 8 rounds per inch. If your fabric is loose, go down one needle size. If the fabric is very stiff, go up one needle size.
For the mane, bag, flowers, hat, and sandals, matching the exact gauge is less important than keeping the pieces proportional. The mane should be thick and soft, while the dress should sit smoothly around the body without pulling.

- The mane is made from individual knitted loops attached around the head in several rings.
- The blue dress is knitted as a separate garment and sewn lightly to the body at the underarms and back.
- The sandals are built from oval soles with green crisscross straps sewn over the feet.

Curly Looped Mane
The mane is the most important lion detail. It is full, rust brown, and looped around the crown, sides, and back of the head. The loops should look soft and playful, like loose curls rather than straight strands.

Assembly Order
- Knit and stuff the body.
- Knit and attach the legs to the lower front of the body.
- Knit the head, attach the muzzle, nose, eyes, ears, and facial embroidery.
- Attach the head to the body with a firm circular seam.
- Add the mane strips and extra individual curls around the head.
- Knit and attach the arms, then add the white puff sleeves.
- Place the dress over the body and secure it with hidden stitches.
- Add the dress straps and tiny buttons.
- Sew the sunflower to the dress bib.
- Add sandals to both feet.
- Make the shoulder bag and place it diagonally across the front.
- Add the daisy flower to the mane.
- Knit the hat, watering can, and flowerpot accessories.
Detailed Body-to-Head Joining
The head should sit directly on the narrow neck of the body, with the muzzle facing forward and slightly downward. Use the long golden yarn tail from the body or a fresh strand of matching yarn.
- Pin the head to the body before sewing.
- The lower center of the head should touch the front neck edge.
- The back of the head should lean back only slightly, not tip forward.
- Use mattress stitch around the full neck opening twice.
- Add extra stuffing into the neck area before closing the last section.
After sewing, gently rotate the head into position with your hands. The doll should have a friendly upright posture, with the face looking forward and the dress bib centered below the muzzle.
Facial Embroidery Details
- Use black embroidery thread for the mouth and paw lines.
- Make one short straight stitch from the bottom of the nose downward.
- Add a soft curved smile to the left and right of that line.
- Keep the mouth small so the nose remains the main facial feature.
- Use two tiny cream or white stitches beside each eye if the eyes need extra shine.
Making the Mane Look Full
The mane should frame the face without hiding it. The upper mane can be dense and rounded, while the cheek sections can hang slightly lower. The photo has a handmade curly texture, so uneven loops are welcome as long as the overall shape stays balanced.
- Add the longest loops at the sides and back.
- Add shorter loops around the forehead.
- Trim only loose yarn ends, not the loops themselves.
- Do not brush the mane, because the knitted loops should stay defined.
- Secure every loop strip firmly so the mane can handle gentle play.
Finishing the Dress Shape
The blue dress should look like a simple garden pinafore. Steam blocking is not required, but you may smooth it with your hands. The bottom edge should flare lightly over the upper legs and sit above the sandals.
- Use small hidden stitches at both side waist points.
- Sew the bib lightly to the white shirt area if it shifts.
- Keep the skirt loose enough for the doll to sit.
- Do not pull the dress too tightly across the belly.
Accessory Placement
- Hat: Place beside the doll on the left side for display, with the green bow facing forward.
- Shoulder bag: Place the strap diagonally from one shoulder to the opposite hip, with the bag resting on the lower front dress area.
- Watering can: Place beside the doll near the flowerpot.
- Flowerpot: Place near the watering can, with the green sprout upright.
- Daisy hair flower: Sew into the mane on the upper side, slightly above one ear.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check the doll from the front before making final knots. The muzzle should be centered, the eyes should sit evenly above it, and the mane should frame the face in a rounded lion shape. The dress straps should be equal in length and the sunflower should sit in the middle of the bib.
- Weave in all yarn tails securely inside the nearest seam.
- Reinforce the head and arm seams with a second pass of stitching.
- Make sure the bag strap is attached firmly to the bag corners.
- Adjust the sandal straps so they cross neatly over each foot.
- Shape the feet forward so the doll sits naturally.
Care Notes
This knitted lion is best cleaned gently by hand. Because the toy includes small details, loops, appliqués, and accessories, avoid machine washing unless every part has been sewn very securely and the safety eyes are fully locked.
- Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not scrub the mane loops.
- Press gently with a towel to remove extra water.
- Air dry flat in a shaded area.
- Reshape the dress, sandals, and bag while damp.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The head is firmly attached and does not wobble.
- The cream muzzle is centered and softly stuffed.
- The black nose is sewn flat and secure.
- The mane is full around the crown, sides, and back.
- The white flower is attached to one side of the mane.
- The blue dress fits smoothly over the body.
- The sunflower appliqué is centered on the dress bib.
- The arms hang naturally at the sides.
- The legs sit evenly under the skirt.
- The green sandal straps cross neatly over each foot.
- The shoulder bag sits diagonally across the front.
- The hat, watering can, and flowerpot are finished as display accessories.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the lion doll in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Sunlight can fade the blue dress, yellow yarn, and rust-brown mane over time. Keep the small hat, watering can, and flowerpot together in a soft pouch if the doll is displayed or moved often.
- Use a lint roller gently on the dress and body if dust appears.
- Use your fingers to separate the mane curls instead of a comb.
- Keep the doll away from rough hook-and-loop tape, sharp jewelry, and pet claws.
- If the bag strap stretches, remove it and reattach it with a shorter seam allowance.
- If the sandals loosen, add two small stitches at each strap end.
With careful shaping and secure stitching, your knitted lion in a sunflower dress will have the same cheerful garden personality shown in the image, complete with her curly mane, bright pinafore, flower details, green sandals, straw hat, little bag, watering can, and tiny potted plant.
