Knitting Tutorial: Raven in a Blue Striped Sweater – Free Knitting Pattern

This cheerful knitted raven is styled exactly like the image: a black bird body with a large golden-yellow beak, round white eyes, looped head feathers, blue-and-white striped cardigan, brown shorts, blue-and-yellow sandals, a matching striped pom-pom hat, a small yellow crossbody satchel, and two tiny knitted acorns. The finished toy is soft, playful, and full of outdoor autumn charm.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written for knitters who want a detailed, image-matching toy with specific stitch counts and shaping. The raven is worked as separate knitted pieces, then stuffed and sewn together. The body has a rounded black head, an oval torso hidden partly by the cardigan, slim black wings, brown shorts, yellow feet, sandals, a striped sweater, hat, bag, and acorns.

The instructions use small flat and circular knitted pieces. Most body parts are worked in stockinette stitch and seamed. The cardigan, shorts, hat, bag, and sandals are built with visible knitted texture so the finished raven has the same handmade look as the reference image.

Finished Size

  • Finished raven height: about 11 inches from top head loops to bottom of sandals.
  • Body without hat loops: about 9.5 inches tall.
  • Head width: about 3.5 inches across when stuffed.
  • Beak length: about 2.75 inches from face to pointed tip.
  • Cardigan width: about 4.5 inches across chest when placed on toy.
  • Hat width: about 3.75 inches across lower edge.
  • Satchel: about 1.5 inches wide and 1.75 inches tall.

Skill Level

Advanced beginner to intermediate. The shapes are simple, but the toy has many small details. Take your time with neat seaming, even stuffing, and accurate placement. The final look depends strongly on the assembly angles, especially the beak, eyes, cardigan front, feet, sandals, and crossbody strap.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in black: 45 g for head, body, wings, arms, and head feather loops.
  • Worsted weight yarn in golden yellow: 35 g for beak, feet, satchel, and sandal flower centers.
  • Worsted weight yarn in sky blue: 35 g for sweater stripes, hat, sandal straps, and bag button detail.
  • Worsted weight yarn in white: 25 g for sweater stripes, eye patches, hat stripes, and sandal soles.
  • Worsted weight yarn in brown: 25 g for shorts, sandal sole edges, and acorns.
  • Small amount of tan yarn: for acorn bodies.
  • Small amount of green yarn: for cardigan buttons.
  • Two 8 mm black safety eyes or black buttons: for the pupils.
  • Polyester fiberfill: for stuffing.
  • US 3 knitting needles: 3.25 mm, double-pointed needles or circular needles for small pieces.
  • US 4 knitting needles: 3.5 mm for cardigan, shorts, hat, and bag.
  • Tapestry needle: for seaming and embroidery.
  • Stitch markers: for shaping points.
  • Small scissors.
  • Removable row counter.

Gauge

With worsted weight yarn and US 3 needles, work 22 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Gauge does not need to be exact, but your fabric should be tight enough that stuffing does not show through. If your stitches are loose, move down one needle size.

The cardigan, shorts, hat, satchel, and sandals use a slightly softer fabric on US 4 needles. Keep the tension firm enough to hold shape but not so tight that the clothing becomes stiff.

Construction Notes

The raven is made with a pear-shaped black body and a rounded black head. The beak is knitted separately in golden yellow, shaped as a large tapered cone, then sewn to the lower front of the head. The beak should angle slightly downward, matching the image, with the widest part sitting just below the eyes.

The cardigan is a separate striped jacket. It has short sleeves, a blue ribbed lower edge, a blue front band, green buttons, and narrow horizontal white and blue stripes. The brown shorts sit below the sweater and are shaped around the lower body with a central leg gap.

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread through the remaining 10 sts, pull tight, and seam the back of the head. Stuff firmly into a smooth oval. The face front should stay broad enough to carry the large beak and two white eye patches.

Joining Head to Body

Place the head on top of the body with the seam at the back. The head should sit slightly forward, giving the raven a friendly leaning posture. Use black yarn and sew around the neck twice. Add extra stitches at the back of the neck so the head does not wobble.

Large Golden Yellow Beak

The beak is the strongest feature of this raven. It is wide at the face, long, smooth, and tapered to a rounded point. Use golden yellow yarn and US 3 needles. Work flat, then seam underneath.

Fold the beak lengthwise with RS out and seam the underside from the tip toward the wide base. Stuff lightly only at the wide base and middle. Do not overstuff the point. The finished beak should remain long, slightly flattened, and softly triangular.

Pin the beak to the face so the top edge sits just below the white eye patches. The widest part should cover the lower half of the face. Sew around the base with small yellow stitches, then add a few hidden black stitches at the top edge to keep it snug against the head.

White Eye Patches and Pupils

Eye Patches, Make 2

Use white yarn and US 3 needles. These are small oval patches that sit side by side above the beak.

  1. CO 6 sts.
  2. Row 1: P all sts.
  3. Row 2: Kfb, k4, kfb. 8 sts.
  4. Row 3: P all sts.
  5. Row 4: Kfb, k6, kfb. 10 sts.
  6. Rows 5 to 8: Work in St st for 4 rows.
  7. Row 9: P all sts.
  8. Row 10: K2tog, k6, ssk. 8 sts.
  9. Row 11: P all sts.
  10. Row 12: K2tog, k4, ssk. 6 sts.
  11. BO.

Sew one white oval on each side of the upper beak. The ovals should touch or nearly touch at the center. Attach one black safety eye or button to the middle of each white patch before final sewing if possible. The pupils should sit high and slightly inward for the same alert expression shown in the image.

Looped Head Feathers

The raven has playful black loops on top of the head. Use black yarn and US 3 needles. Make three loop feathers, then sew them upright near the crown.

Loop Feather, Make 3

  1. CO 4 sts.
  2. Work 18 rows in garter stitch.
  3. BO, leaving a 10 inch tail.
  4. Fold the strip into a loop and sew the cast-on edge to the bind-off edge.

Attach the loops at the top back of the head. Place the tallest loop in the center, one loop slightly left, and one loop angled toward the side. Add a few anchor stitches at the base so the loops stand visibly above the crown.

Black Wings and Arms

The image shows black wing-like arms extending from the sweater sleeves. Each wing has a narrow upper section and three small feather points at the end. Make two identical wings.

Wing Base, Make 2

  1. With black yarn and US 3 needles, CO 10 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Work in St st.
  3. Row 5: Kfb, k8, kfb. 12 sts.

  5. Row 12: K2tog, k8, ssk. 10 sts.
  6. Row 13: P all sts.
  7. Row 14: K2tog, k6, ssk. 8 sts.
  8. Rows 15 to 18: Work in St st.
  9. BO.

Feather Points for Each Wing

At the lower edge of one wing, pick up 9 sts across the end. Divide these into three groups of 3 sts.

  1. For first feather: K3, turn, p3, turn, k2tog, k1, turn, p2, turn, k2tog. Fasten off.
  2. For second feather: Rejoin yarn to next 3 sts. Repeat the same shaping.
  3. For third feather: Rejoin yarn to final 3 sts. Repeat the same shaping.

Fold each wing lightly and seam the side edge, leaving the top open. Add a tiny amount of stuffing only to the upper arm section. Sew one wing to each side of the body after the cardigan sleeves are placed, so the black hands extend clearly from the blue sleeve cuffs.

Golden Yellow Feet with Toes

The raven’s feet are bright yellow and visible through the sandals. Each foot has three rounded front toes. Make two feet.

Foot Base, Make 2

  1. With golden yellow yarn and US 3 needles, CO 12 sts.

Place two straps across each yellow foot. One strap should sit near the toes and one should sit across the ankle. Sew strap ends to the sides of the white sole. Keep the blue straps visible and slightly raised.

Small Yellow Flowers, Make 2

  1. With yellow yarn, CO 3 sts.
  2. Knit 3 rows, then BO. This makes one petal.
  3. Make 5 petals for each flower.
  4. Arrange petals into a small circle and sew together at the center.
  5. Add a tiny blue stitch in the center if desired.

Sew one flower to the outside of each sandal strap. In the image, the flowers sit near the outer side of the foot, not centered directly over the toes.

Tiny Knitted Acorns

The image includes two tiny acorns beside the raven. One acorn is mostly brown, and one has a lighter tan body with a darker brown cap. They are small but add a sweet woodland detail.

Acorn Body, Make 2

  1. With tan or medium brown yarn and US 3 needles, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: P all sts.
  3. Row 2: Kfb in every st across. 16 sts.
  4. Rows 3 to 8: Work in St st.
  5. Row 9: P all sts.
  6. Row 10: K2tog across. 8 sts.
  7. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull tight.

Seam the side and stuff very lightly. Pull the bottom into a rounded point so the acorn body looks oval and tapered.

Acorn Cap, Make 2

  1. With dark brown yarn, CO 14 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Work in garter stitch.
  3. Row 5: K2tog across. 7 sts.
  4. Row 6: P all sts.
  5. Row 7: K2tog, k3, k2tog. 5 sts.
  6. BO.

Sew the cap around the top of the acorn body. For the small stem, CO 3 sts with dark brown yarn, knit 4 rows, BO, and sew to the cap top. Bend the stem slightly to match the natural curved look in the image.

Facial Placement Guide

  • Beak: Center on the lower front of the head. The wide edge should sit just under the eyes, and the pointed end should extend forward and downward.
  • Eye patches: Sew the white ovals side by side above the beak. They should slightly overlap the top edge of the beak.
  • Pupils: Place one black eye in the center of each white oval, slightly high and inward.
  • Head loops: Sew three black loops to the top crown, angled casually like soft feathers.
  • Expression: Keep the beak large and smooth. The friendly look comes from the high round eyes and oversized yellow beak.

Clothing Placement Guide

Dress the raven before final wing attachment if you want the sweater sleeves to sit cleanly. Slide the cardigan over the shoulders, then place the wings through the sleeves. Sew the cardigan lightly to the body at the back neck, underarms, and lower front corners.

The shorts should sit under the lower blue ribbing of the cardigan. Only the lower brown shorts and ribbed leg openings should show beneath the sweater. The cardigan should overlap the shorts slightly, just like a loose childlike jacket.

The satchel strap crosses from the raven’s upper left shoulder down to the lower right side. The yellow bag rests on the front of the cardigan and shorts area. Secure the strap with tiny stitches at the shoulder and side so it does not slide.

Detailed Assembly Order

  1. Knit and stuff the black body.
  2. Knit, stuff, and sew the black head to the body.
  3. Knit the yellow beak, seam it, lightly stuff it, and attach it to the face.
  4. Knit and sew the white eye patches above the beak.
  5. Add the black pupils or safety eyes.
  6. Make and attach the three black head feather loops.
  7. Knit the legs and yellow feet, then sew the feet to the lower body.
  8. Knit the brown shorts and place them over the lower body and legs.
  9. Knit the blue and white cardigan, sew it together, and dress the raven.
  10. Knit the black wings and attach them through the cardigan sleeves.
  11. Make the sandals and sew them around the yellow feet.
  12. Knit the yellow satchel and blue strap, then attach across the body.
  13. Knit the matching striped hat and pom-pom.
  14. Knit the two tiny acorns and place them beside the raven as accessories.

Seaming Tips for a Clean Finish

Use mattress stitch whenever possible on visible seams. For the head and body, keep the seam at the back. For the beak, hide the seam underneath. For the sweater, seam from the wrong side, then turn the cardigan right side out before placing it on the raven.

Stuff gradually in small amounts. A toy with too much stuffing can distort the face and make the sweater too tight. The beak should be lightly padded but not round like a ball. It should keep a smooth long triangular shape.

When attaching clothing, use matching yarn and tiny stitches. Do not sew through large visible areas unless needed. A few hidden anchor stitches are enough to keep the cardigan, shorts, strap, and sandals from shifting.

Stripe Accuracy Notes

  • Cardigan stripes: Keep the stripes narrow, using two rows white and two rows blue.
  • Hat stripes: Match the cardigan with the same narrow stripe rhythm.
  • Blue edges: The cardigan hem, sleeve cuffs, front bands, and hat brim should be blue.
  • Buttons: Use green buttons down the center front to copy the image detail.
  • Bag: Keep the satchel solid yellow with one small blue button on the flap.

Beginner-Friendly Notes

If you are new to knitted toys, label each finished piece before assembly. Many small parts look similar before they are sewn on. Keep the left and right cardigan fronts separate, and pin every part in place before stitching permanently.

Use removable stitch markers to mark the face center, shoulder points, and lower body center. This helps the large beak, sweater, shorts, and legs stay symmetrical. Symmetry is especially important because the raven’s face has a strong central beak.

Do not rush the eye placement. Move the white patches and pupils around until the expression looks friendly. A very small change in eye angle can make the raven look sleepy, surprised, or cheerful.

Optional Firming for Display

If the raven will be used mostly for display, you may add a small flat weight inside the lower body before closing the bottom. Wrap the weight securely in fabric first. This helps the toy sit well for photos with the hat and acorns arranged beside it.

Do not add hard weights if the toy is intended for very young children. For a child-safe version, use only soft stuffing and securely embroidered eyes instead of buttons or safety eyes.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the raven from the front before weaving in your last ends. The beak should be centered and large, the eyes should sit above it, the sweater should open neatly at the front, and the satchel should rest on the lower right side. Add one or two small tightening stitches under the beak if it tilts too low.

Brush away loose fibers with your fingers. Shape the head loops upward, flatten the cardigan bands, and gently pull the sandals into place so the yellow toes remain visible.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not wring the toy, because the beak and clothing can lose shape.
  • Lay flat to dry on a towel.
  • Reshape the hat, bag, and sandals while damp if needed.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Large yellow beak is centered and smoothly tapered.
  • White eye patches are even and close together.
  • Blue striped cardigan has matching narrow stripes.
  • Green buttons are sewn down the front band.
  • Brown shorts show clearly beneath the sweater.
  • Yellow feet have three visible toes each.
  • Blue sandals include yellow flower decorations.
  • Yellow satchel hangs diagonally from a blue strap.
  • Striped hat has a blue-white pom-pom.
  • Two acorns are finished as small woodland accessories.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the knitted raven in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Long sunlight exposure can fade the blue stripes, yellow beak, and brown shorts. If displaying the toy seasonally, place tissue inside the hat and satchel so they keep their shape.

For long-term storage, wrap the raven loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Do not compress the beak, head loops, sandals, or pom-pom. Keep the acorns in a small labeled pouch so they do not get misplaced.

Refresh the toy by gently reshaping the cardigan, smoothing the beak, and fluffing the pom-pom with your fingers. Avoid brushing aggressively, because small knitted details such as the buttons, flower sandals, and acorn stems can loosen over time.
