Knitting Tutorial: Summer Picnic Tuxedo Cat – Free Knitting Pattern

This Summer Picnic Tuxedo Cat is a soft knitted doll with a dark brown tuxedo-cat body, white paws, white muzzle, pink nose, glossy black eyes, and a cheerful striped summer dress. The set includes a flower-trimmed sunhat, a strawberry shoulder bag, sandals with tiny flowers, a small picnic basket, and a round picnic treat, matching the sweet garden-picnic look in the image.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written to create a sitting-style knitted tuxedo cat doll with a broad rounded head, slim dangling legs, softly rounded arms, and a bell-shaped striped dress. The doll is designed as a display plush, not as a toy for children under three years old because the eyes, flowers, and accessories are small decorative parts.

The finished cat measures about 11.5 inches / 29 cm tall from the top of the ears to the bottom of the sandals when worked with DK yarn and firm stuffing. The head is intentionally large compared with the body, giving the cat the cute handmade character shown in the picture.

The knitting is worked mostly in the round on double-pointed needles or a small circular needle using the magic loop method. Small parts may also be worked flat and seamed. Keep your tension firm so the stuffing does not show through the knitted fabric.

Finished Size

  • Total height: about 11.5 inches / 29 cm.
  • Head width: about 4 inches / 10 cm across the cheeks.
  • Body length under dress: about 4.25 inches / 11 cm.
  • Arm length: about 3.5 inches / 9 cm each.
  • Leg length: about 3.75 inches / 9.5 cm each.
  • Dress hem width: about 6.5 inches / 16.5 cm when gently flattened.
  • Sunhat diameter: about 3.75 inches / 9.5 cm.
  • Shoulder bag: about 1.75 inches / 4.5 cm tall.

  • DK weight yarn in white for muzzle patch, inner ears, front chest, paws, and foot tips.
  • DK weight yarn in sky blue, pale yellow, cream, and light turquoise for the striped dress.
  • DK weight yarn in beige or natural cotton color for the sunhat, picnic basket, sandals, bag, and dress floral band.
  • Small amounts of green, red, pink, blue, yellow, and rose yarn for flowers, strawberry embroidery, leaves, and facial details.
  • US size 2 / 2.75 mm double-pointed needles or circular needle for magic loop.
  • US size 1 / 2.25 mm needles for small flowers, straps, and firm accessory details.
  • Two black safety eyes, 8 mm to 9 mm, or black embroidered eyes.

  • Accessory gauge: 8 stitches and 11 rows = 1 inch / 2.5 cm on smaller needles.

Color Notes

The cat in the image is a tuxedo cat with dark brown fur, a white lower face, white inner ear patches, white paws, and a small pink nose. Use dark brown instead of pure black to copy the soft knitted look. The white muzzle should be wide and heart-shaped, beginning below the eyes and narrowing under the pink nose.

The dress uses repeated horizontal stripes in blue, yellow, turquoise, cream, and beige. The bottom beige band has small embroidered flowers with green stems. The hem is sky blue and slightly thicker, giving the skirt a rounded edge. The bag, hat, sandals, and picnic basket are beige, making the accessories look like summer straw pieces.

Special Construction Notes

  • The head is knitted from the lower neck upward, widened through the cheeks, and narrowed at the top.
  • The muzzle patch is knitted separately in white and sewn onto the front of the head.
  • The ears are triangular, worked flat, folded slightly, and sewn at a diagonal angle.
  • The body is simple because the dress covers most of it, but it must be firm enough to support the head.
  • The dress is knitted separately from the top down with short sleeves and a flared skirt.
  • The legs are attached under the dress and remain visible below the hem.
  • The sandals are decorative bands sewn around the feet after the legs are attached.

  15. BO loosely, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Pin the muzzle to the front of the head. The widest part should sit below the eyes. Sew with small whip stitches around the edge. Add a little stuffing behind the center before closing the final inch so the muzzle is softly raised.

Pink Nose and Mouth

  • With pink yarn, embroider a small triangle nose centered on the top half of the white muzzle.
  • Make 5 horizontal satin stitches across 3 sts width, then 3 shorter satin stitches below to form a rounded triangle.
  • Bring yarn down from the nose center and make one vertical stitch about 4 rows long.
  • Add two tiny angled stitches at the bottom to form a soft cat mouth.
  • Do not make the mouth too dark. The image has a delicate, sweet expression.

Ears

Make two ears. Each ear is a dark brown triangle with a smaller white inner triangle. The ears are sewn high on the head and tilted outward slightly. The bottom edge of each ear is curved gently to follow the head.

Outer Ear

  1. Using dark brown yarn, CO 18 sts and work flat.

Sew one white inner ear onto each dark brown outer ear, leaving a narrow brown border visible. Fold each finished ear slightly at the bottom center. Sew the ears to the head between Rnds 28 and 34, angled diagonally, with the points leaning outward.

Body

The body is knitted in dark brown and is mostly hidden by the dress. Make it firm and slightly pear-shaped so the dress rests naturally over it. The top should be narrower than the lower body.

  1. Using dark brown yarn, CO 8 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts. 8 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st around. 16 sts.

  19. BO, leaving a long tail for attaching the head.

White Chest Patch

A small white chest patch peeks above the neckline of the dress. This creates the tuxedo-cat look visible between the blue collar and the dark brown head.

  1. Using white yarn, CO 8 sts and work flat.
  2. Rows 1-2: Work in st st. 8 sts.
  3. Row 3: Kfb, K6, kfb. 10 sts.
  4. Row 4: P all sts.

  6. Row 9: SSK, K6, k2tog. 8 sts.
  7. Row 10: P all sts.
  8. BO, leaving a sewing tail.

Sew the patch to the upper front body before dressing the cat. Place it so the top edge will sit just under the chin after the head is attached.

Arms

Make two arms. Each arm is dark brown with a rounded white paw. The arms hang downward at the sides and are sewn just under the dress sleeve edge. Stuff lightly so they stay soft and flexible.

  1. Using white yarn, CO 8 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts. 8 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st around. 16 sts.

  8. Stuff the white paw firmly and the arm lightly.
  9. Rnd 24: K1, k2tog; repeat around. 8 sts.
  10. BO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

For the tiny pink paw hint shown on the white paw area, embroider three short pink stitches near the lower side of each paw. Keep them very small so they look delicate and handmade.

Legs

Make two legs. The legs are slim dark brown tubes with white foot tips. They extend below the dress hem and sit inside beige sandals. The lower leg should remain narrow and straight.

  1. Using white yarn, CO 10 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts. 10 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st around. 20 sts.

Sew both legs to the lower body, spacing them about 6 sts apart at the front. Angle them downward so the feet point forward. The legs should appear under the skirt, with the white foot tips resting inside the sandals.

Striped Summer Dress

The dress is one of the most important pieces in the image. It has a blue neckline, short sleeves, horizontal pastel stripes, a beige floral border near the bottom, and a sky-blue hem. The skirt flares outward and creates a soft bell shape around the body.

Work the dress from the top down. Use firm but not tight tension so the dress can slide over the body. The dress should fit snugly at the shoulders and widen gradually toward the hem.

Dress Yoke

  1. Using sky blue yarn, CO 36 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts. 36 sts.

  2. Rnds 16-17: Knit with light turquoise.

  8. BO loosely purlwise so the hem does not curl inward.

Dress Sleeves

Return the 12 held sleeve sts to needles. Pick up 2 sts from the underarm. Each sleeve has 14 sts. Make the sleeves short, flared, and blue-edged like the image.

  1. Using sky blue yarn, K 1 rnd around the 14 sleeve sts.

Dress Flower Embroidery

The floral band is placed on the beige section near the bottom of the skirt. Work five small flowers across the front only. Each flower has a green stem, two leaves, and a small round center with colored petals.

  • Mark five flower positions evenly across the front beige band.
  • Use green yarn to make one vertical stem over 4 rows for each flower.
  • Add two diagonal green leaf stitches beside each stem.
  • For each flower center, make one small French knot or one short satin stitch in yellow.
  • For petals, make 5 lazy-daisy stitches around the center using pink, blue, rose, or yellow yarn.
  • Keep the flowers small enough that they fit completely inside the beige band.

Sunhat

The sunhat is a separate round knitted accessory. It has a flat circular crown, a slightly raised center, narrow blue and yellow accent rings, a beige brim, and small flowers on one side. It lies beside the cat in the image, but it can also be lightly tacked to the head if desired.

  • Make two points and sew one to each side of the round treat.

Embroider a beige spiral on top by stitching around the crown in a circular line. Add three tiny red decorative stitches on the side to match the picnic detail shown in the image.

Sandals

The sandals are beige and blue, with small flower decorations on the top. They wrap around the white foot tips and sit at the bottom of the dark brown legs. Make two sandals.

Sandal Sole

  1. Using beige yarn and smaller needles, CO 10 sts and work flat.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: Kfb, K8, kfb. 12 sts.
  4. Rows 3-8: K all sts.
  5. Row 9: SSK, K8, k2tog. 10 sts.
  6. Row 10: K all sts.
  7. BO, leaving a sewing tail.

Sandal Top Band

  1. Using sky blue yarn, CO 16 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: K all sts.
  4. BO.
  5. Sew the band across the top of the foot, attaching both ends to the sole edges.

Sandal Rim

  • With beige yarn, stitch around the sole edge using small whip stitches.
  • Add a pale yellow stitch line along the outer rim if desired.
  • Keep the sandal snug but not tight around the foot.

Sandal Flowers

  • For each sandal, make one tiny blue flower and one tiny pink flower.
  • Use 5 short lazy-daisy embroidery stitches for petals.
  • Add a yellow center stitch.
  • Sew the flowers to the top band near the outer side of each foot.

Joining the Doll

Before final joining, place all main pieces on the table and compare the proportions. The head should look larger than the body. The arms should reach near the dress waist. The legs should extend below the hem by about 2 inches / 5 cm.

  1. Sew the head to the body using the long body tail.
  2. Go around the neck at least three times with firm stitches.
  3. Keep the head facing straight forward.
  4. Slide the dress over the body from the feet upward before attaching the arms if needed.
  5. Position the dress neckline under the head and over the white chest patch.
  6. Sew the arms to the upper sides of the body through the dress sleeve openings.
  7. Attach the arms at a slight downward angle so the white paws point outward.
  8. Sew the legs securely under the body, hidden by the skirt.
  9. Put the sandals onto the feet and tack them in place with beige yarn.
  10. Place the bag strap over the left shoulder and across the front.
  11. Tack the strap lightly at the shoulder and side so it does not slide off.

Eye Shine and Face Finishing

The image shows glossy black eyes with a bright highlight. If you use safety eyes, the shine will appear naturally. If you embroider the eyes, use black yarn for the eye shape and add one tiny white stitch at the upper outer edge of each eye.

  • Check that both eyes sit evenly above the muzzle.
  • Add one small white highlight stitch to each embroidered eye if needed.
  • Shape the cheeks by gently massaging the stuffing around the muzzle.
  • Keep the pink nose centered and soft, not too large.
  • Use dark brown yarn to hide any visible sewing gaps around the ears.

Optional Tail

The image does not clearly show a tail because the dress covers the back. You may leave the cat without a visible tail. For a hidden support tail, knit a small dark brown curved tail and sew it under the back of the skirt.

  1. Using dark brown yarn, CO 8 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-22: K all sts.
  3. Stuff very lightly as you work.
  4. Rnd 23: K2tog around. 4 sts.
  5. Cut yarn, pull through sts, and close.
  6. Sew the tail to the lower back body before dressing the cat, curving it gently to one side.

Detailed Accessory Placement

  • Sunhat: place it beside the cat or tack it lightly near one ear. The flower cluster should face forward.
  • Shoulder bag: place the strap from the cat’s left shoulder to the right hip. The strawberry front should face outward.
  • Picnic basket: shape the basket into a soft rectangle and place it near the cat’s right side.
  • Round treat: place it between the hat and basket, with the spiral top visible.
  • Sandals: center each flower decoration on the top outer edge of the foot.

Blocking and Shaping

Because this is a stuffed knitted doll, do not wet block the entire cat heavily. Instead, use your fingers to shape each part as you stuff and sew. The dress hem can be lightly steam-shaped if your yarn allows it.

  • Use very light steam on the dress only, keeping the iron above the fabric.
  • Do not press the stuffed head or body flat.
  • Flatten the sunhat brim gently under a book for 20 minutes if it curls too much.
  • Pin the flower band area flat before embroidering, then remove the pins after stitching.
  • Shape the ears with a slight inward curve at the base.

Beginner Tips for a Neat Result

Work slowly on the small accessories. Their size makes them important to the final look. Even simple stitches can look beautiful when they are placed evenly and secured neatly on the back.

  • Use stitch markers to divide rounds into sections when increasing or decreasing.
  • Stuff small parts with the blunt end of a pencil or chopstick.
  • Do not overstuff the arms and legs, because they should hang naturally.
  • Use matching sewing yarn whenever possible so seams disappear.
  • When changing stripe colors, twist the yarns neatly at the back of the work to avoid holes.
  • Weave all dress ends inside the dress, not on the visible front.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Sew every attachment firmly and check that the cat can lie or sit neatly for display. The ears should be symmetrical, the muzzle should be centered, and the dress should flare evenly all around the body. Add the final tiny flowers only after the main pieces are fully joined.

  • Confirm the head is straight before tightening the neck seam.
  • Center the white muzzle between the eyes.
  • Place the pink nose at the upper center of the muzzle.
  • Keep the mouth small and gentle.
  • Tack the bag strap so it follows the diagonal line across the dress.
  • Arrange the skirt so the floral band sits across the front.

Care Notes

This knitted tuxedo cat is best cared for as a decorative handmade piece. The small flowers, basket, bag, and embroidered strawberries may loosen if handled roughly. Keep the doll away from moisture, strong sunlight, and pets that may pull at the yarn.

  • Spot clean only with a slightly damp cloth.
  • Do not machine wash.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Let the doll air dry fully if it becomes damp.
  • Store the hat and basket beside the doll to avoid crushing them.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, support the head and body when moving the doll. Avoid pulling the arms, legs, strap, or hat flowers. If dust collects, use a soft dry brush and gently sweep along the direction of the knitted stitches.

  • For small stains, dab with cool water and mild soap, then dab again with plain water.
  • Do not soak the doll because stuffing may shift inside the head and body.
  • Keep the doll in a breathable cotton bag if storing for a long time.
  • Add tissue paper around the hat brim and basket handle to prevent flattening.
  • Check the embroidered flowers and strawberries occasionally and secure loose ends with a tapestry needle.
