This Spring Garden Elephant is a soft amigurumi elephant with a round gray head, wide pink inner ears, a short curved trunk, black glossy eyes, a tiny hair tuft, green striped overalls, brown sandals, a yellow crossbody bag, a removable straw garden hat, a small bee on the head, and little flower pots beside it. The finished look is cheerful, garden-inspired, and detailed from head to toe.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is designed to recreate the elephant shown in the image as closely as possible. The body is made as a firm amigurumi doll with a large round head, smaller body, short legs, rounded arms, oversized ears, and separate accessories.

The finished elephant measures about 10.5 to 11.5 inches tall when made with sport or DK cotton yarn and a 2.25 mm hook. The head is intentionally oversized, the ears are large and rounded, and the overalls sit high on the body with cream stripes and small embroidered flowers.

Skill Level

  • Confident beginner to intermediate.
  • You should know magic ring, single crochet, increases, invisible decreases, color changes, working in rounds, sewing amigurumi pieces, and simple embroidery.
  • The flower pots, bee, hat, bag, and sandals use small parts, so patient assembly is important.

Finished Size

  • Elephant height: about 10.5 to 11.5 inches tall.
  • Head width including ears: about 8.5 to 9 inches.
  • Body width at overalls: about 3.75 inches.
  • Hat width: about 4.25 inches across the brim.
  • Yellow bag: about 1.5 inches wide and 1.75 inches tall.
  • Small flower pots: about 1.25 to 1.75 inches tall each.

Materials

  • DK or sport weight cotton yarn in light warm gray for the elephant.
  • Soft pink yarn for inner ears, toe pads, and hand pads.
  • Sage green yarn for overalls, straps, hat ribbon, and small leaves.
  • Cream yarn for overall stripes and shirt band details.
  • Brown yarn for sandals and flower pots.
  • Tan straw-colored yarn for the removable hat.
  • Yellow yarn for the bag and tiny bee.
  • Black yarn or embroidery thread for eyes, eyebrows, mouth, bee stripes, and hair tuft.
  • White yarn for flower petals and bee wings.
  • Small amounts of red, blue, yellow, and green yarn for flower pots and embroidered flowers.
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook for the elephant and clothing.
  • 2.0 mm crochet hook for small accessories and flowers.
  • 8 mm black safety eyes or embroidered eyes.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Two 7 mm light wooden buttons for overall straps.
  • Optional: small amount of craft wire for flower stems.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring.
  • ch: chain.
  • sl st: slip stitch.
  • sc: single crochet.
  • hdc: half double crochet.
  • dc: double crochet.
  • inc: 2 single crochet in the same stitch.
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease.
  • BLO: back loop only.
  • FLO: front loop only.
  • st or sts: stitch or stitches.
  • R: round or row.
  • FO: fasten off.

Gauge and Crochet Texture

Use a tight amigurumi gauge so stuffing does not show through. With DK cotton and a 2.25 mm hook, 8 sc rounds should measure about 1 inch vertically, and 8 sc stitches should measure about 1 inch across. The fabric should feel firm but not stiff.

The visible image texture is compact and evenly rounded, so do not use a hook that creates loose gaps. If your fabric stretches or shows stuffing, go down half a hook size. If your hands hurt or the piece becomes too rigid, go up slightly but keep the stitches closed.

Important Construction Notes

  • The head and body are made separately, then sewn together securely.
  • The trunk is crocheted separately and sewn to the center front of the face.
  • The ears are made in two layers: pink inner ear and gray outer ear, joined with a gray border.
  • The overalls are crocheted directly around the body, with green and cream stripes.
  • The bag, bee, hat, sandals, and flower pots are separate accessories.
  • Use pins before sewing. The final look depends heavily on balanced placement.

Insert the safety eyes between R20 and R21, about 12 stitches apart. The eyes should sit low on the face, slightly outside the trunk position. Stuff the head firmly, especially the cheeks and upper forehead. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing to the body.

Trunk

The trunk is short, thick at the face, and gently tapered toward the rounded tip. It points forward and slightly downward. Use light gray yarn and work in continuous rounds.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: sc 1, inc, repeat around. (9)
  3. R3: sc around. (9)

Stuff the trunk lightly. The tip should stay rounded, not overfilled. Flatten the open end slightly. FO with a long tail. Sew the trunk centered between the eyes, with the top edge around R18 of the head and the bottom edge around R25. Angle it outward so it projects from the face.

Trunk Surface Shaping

  • With light gray yarn, make three very shallow horizontal embroidery lines across the trunk.
  • Place one line near R5, one near R8, and one near R11 of the trunk.
  • Each line should cover only the front half of the trunk, not the full circumference.
  • Pull lightly so the trunk has gentle folds without becoming wrinkled.

Ears

The ears are large, round, and slightly cupped. Make two pink inner ears and two gray outer ears. The inner pink portion should be visible and framed by a gray border.

Pink Inner Ear

Make two with pink yarn. Work in rounds, but join each round with a sl st for a flatter circle.

Place one pink inner ear on top of one gray outer ear, wrong sides together. With gray yarn, crochet through both layers around the edge: sc in each stitch around, placing 2 sc at the widest side curve if needed to prevent curling. FO with a long sewing tail.

Ear Placement

  • Pin the ears to the sides of the head between R14 and R27.
  • The top of each ear should sit slightly lower than the top of the head.
  • The inner pink side faces forward.
  • Sew only the inner vertical edge firmly to the head so the outside edge remains slightly free and rounded.
  • The ears should tilt outward like soft elephant ears, not lie flat against the head.

Body

Use light gray yarn for the base body. The body is smaller than the head, rounded at the belly, and slightly narrower at the neck. Work from the bottom upward.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. (18)

Stuff the body firmly. The bottom should be stable enough for sitting or standing with the legs attached. FO, leaving a long tail if you prefer to close the top before sewing the head. The head will sit directly over the neck opening.

Legs

Make two legs with light gray yarn. The legs are short and rounded, with visible feet coming out below the overalls. Add pink toe pads later.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)

  7. R9-R11: sc around. (15)
  8. R12: sc 3, dec, repeat 3 times. (12)
  9. R13: sc around. (12)

Stuff the lower foot firmly and the upper leg lightly. Flatten the top opening. FO with a long tail. Sew the legs to the bottom front of the body between R2 and R8 of the body, leaving about 3 stitches between the inner legs.

Pink Toe Pads

Make six small toe ovals, three for each foot, using pink yarn and a 2.0 mm hook.

  1. Ch 3.
  2. Work 2 sc in the second ch from hook.
  3. Work 3 sc in the last ch.
  4. Continue on the other side of the chain and work 1 sc.
  5. Sl st to close. FO with a sewing tail.

Sew three pink toe pads across the front of each foot. Place them just above the sandal opening, evenly spaced.

Arms

Make two arms with light gray yarn. The arms hang down at the sides and have small pink hand pads at the ends.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: sc 1, inc, repeat around. (9)
  3. R3: sc 2, inc, repeat around. (12)
  4. R4-R6: sc around. (12)
  5. R7: sc 2, dec, repeat around. (9)
  6. R8-R18: sc around. (9)

Stuff the hand area firmly and the arm lightly. Flatten the top. FO with a long tail. Sew the arms to the sides of the body at R21-R23, angled slightly downward so they rest against the overalls.

Pink Hand Pads

Make two small pink circles.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. Sl st to close and FO.

Sew one pink circle to the front end of each arm. Keep the stitches neat and small so the pads look soft and rounded.

Green and Cream Striped Overalls

The overalls are crocheted as a fitted garment over the body. You may crochet directly onto the body or make a separate tube and sew it on. For the cleanest result, work the pants section as a separate piece from the bottom upward.

Overall Shorts Base

Use sage green yarn. Work in continuous rounds.

  1. R1: Ch 42, sl st to join into a ring, being careful not to twist. (42)
  2. R2-R3: sc around in green. (42)
  3. R4: change to cream, sc around. (42)
  4. R5-R6: change to green, sc around. (42)
  5. R7: cream, sc around. (42)
  6. R8-R9: green, sc around. (42)
  7. R10: cream, sc around. (42)
  8. R11-R12: green, sc around. (42)
  9. R13: sc 5, dec, repeat around. (36)
  10. R14: cream, sc around. (36)
  11. R15-R17: green, sc around. (36)
  12. R18: sc 4, dec, repeat around. (30)
  13. R19: cream, sc around. (30)
  14. R20-R21: green, sc around. (30)

FO and weave in the end. Slide the overalls onto the body from the bottom before the legs are fully secured, or open the back seam if needed and sew it closed around the body. The cream stripes should appear evenly across the lower belly.

Separating the Leg Openings

Turn the overall base upside down. With sage green yarn, join at the center front lower edge. Work around one leg opening using 18 stitches.

  1. Leg cuff R1: sc 18 around the first opening. (18)
  2. Leg cuff R2: cream, sc around. (18)
  3. Leg cuff R3: green, sc around. (18)

Repeat for the second leg opening. FO and weave in all ends. The cuffs should sit just above the gray feet, leaving the toes and sandals visible.

Front Bib

Use sage green yarn. Crochet in rows.

  1. Row 1: Ch 15, sc in second ch from hook and across. (14)
  2. Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc across. (14)
  3. Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc 3, change to cream, sc 8, change to green, sc 3. (14)
  4. Row 4: ch 1, turn, sc across in the colors as established. (14)
  5. Row 5: green, sc across. (14)
  6. Row 6: green, sc across. (14)
  7. Row 7: cream, sc across. (14)
  8. Row 8: green, sc across. (14)
  9. Row 9: green, sc across. (14)
  10. Row 10: sc 2, dec, sc 6, dec, sc 2. (12)

FO with a long tail. Sew the bib to the front upper center of the overalls, from the waistline up to the chest. The bib should cover the center front but leave the gray arms free at the sides.

Overall Straps

Make two straps with sage green yarn.

  1. Ch 22.
  2. Sc in second ch from hook and across. (21)
  3. Ch 1, turn, sc across again. (21)
  4. FO with a long tail.

Sew each strap to the top back of the overalls, cross them slightly over the shoulders, and bring them to the front bib corners. Sew one small button at each front bib corner. Attach the strap ends under the buttons so they look buttoned in place.

Cream Shirt Band Under the Overalls

The image shows a pale cream band at the upper chest and neck area under the green overalls. Use cream yarn and crochet a narrow collar band around the top of the body before sewing the head.

  1. Join cream yarn around R24 of the body.
  2. Sc evenly around the neck opening, about 24 sts.
  3. Work one more round of sc.
  4. FO and weave in ends.

For the small dotted green detail along the cream band, use sage green yarn and embroider tiny vertical stitches evenly around the front half of the collar. Keep each stitch about one crochet stitch tall.

Embroidered Flowers on the Overalls

The overalls have small white daisies and yellow centers across the lower bib and belly. Place the flowers after the overalls are fitted.

  • Use white yarn or embroidery thread for petals.
  • Use yellow yarn for the flower centers.
  • Make three small daisies on the lower front bib and upper shorts area.
  • Each daisy has 5 straight stitches as petals.
  • Add one small yellow knot or short stitch in the center.
  • Add two tiny green leaf stitches beside each flower.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Do not make the flowers too large. They should decorate the overalls without covering the cream stripes. The largest flower should be about 0.4 inch wide.

Brown Sandals

The sandals are open at the toes and wrap around the gray feet. Make two soles and two top straps. Use brown yarn and a 2.0 mm hook.

Sandal Sole

Make two.

  1. Ch 8.
  2. R1: sc in second ch from hook, sc 5, 3 sc in last ch, continue on the other side, sc 5, 2 sc in last st. (16)

Yellow Crossbody Bag

The bag is a small rectangular pouch with a flap, a tiny flower, and a long strap crossing from the shoulder to the opposite hip. Use yellow yarn and a 2.0 mm hook.

Bag Body

Work in rows.

  1. Row 1: Ch 11, sc in second ch from hook and across. (10)
  2. Row 2-9: ch 1, turn, sc across. (10)
  3. Row 10: ch 1, turn, sc around the full rectangle edge, placing 2 sc in each corner.
  4. FO and weave in ends.

Bag Back Panel

Make a second rectangle exactly the same as the bag body. Place both panels together and sc through both layers around the sides and bottom, leaving the top open. FO and weave in ends.

Bag Flap

  1. Join yellow yarn at the top back edge of the bag.
  2. Row 1: sc 10 across. (10)
  3. Row 2: ch 1, turn, dec, sc 6, dec. (8)
  4. Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc across. (8)
  5. Row 4: ch 1, turn, dec, sc 4, dec. (6)

  7. FO and weave in end.

Bag Strap

  1. Ch 58.
  2. Sc in second ch from hook and across. (57)
  3. FO with a long tail.

Sew the strap to the top side corners of the bag. Place the strap diagonally across the elephant, from the left shoulder to the right hip. Tack it down with a few hidden stitches so it stays in position.

Small Flower on Bag

Use pale pink or lavender yarn for the flower and yellow for the center.

  1. In MR: ch 2, dc, ch 2, sl st into ring, repeat 5 times for 5 petals.
  2. Pull the ring closed and FO.
  3. Add one yellow stitch in the center.
  4. Sew the flower to the lower right side of the bag flap.

Stuff only very lightly if you want a firm display hat, or leave unstuffed if you want it to sit naturally on the head. Continue directly to the brim.

Hat Brim

  1. R15: FLO inc in each st around. (66)
  2. R16: sc around. (66)
  3. R17: sc 10, inc, repeat around. (72)
  4. R18: sc around. (72)
  5. R19: sc 11, inc, repeat around. (78)
  6. R20: crab stitch or reverse sc around for a firm brim edge. (78)

FO and weave in ends. The brim should lie flat with a slight natural ripple, like the straw hat shown on the table.

Green Ribbon and Bow

Use sage green yarn.

  1. Ch 42.
  2. Sc in second ch from hook and across. (41)
  3. Wrap the strip around the base of the crown and sew the ends together.

For the bow, ch 12, sc back across, FO, then fold into a small bow shape. Wrap green yarn around the center 5 times and sew it to one side of the hat ribbon.

Tiny Bee on the Head

The bee sits on top of the elephant’s head near the hair tuft. It is very small, yellow, round, and has black stripes with white wings. Use a 2.0 mm hook.

Bee Body

Use yellow yarn.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3-R4: sc around. (12)
  4. R5: sc 2, dec, repeat around. (9)
  5. R6: sc 1, dec, repeat around. (6)

Stuff very lightly. FO and close the opening. With black embroidery thread, stitch two thin stripes around the bee body. Add two small black eye stitches and a tiny smiling mouth.

Bee Wings

Make two with white yarn.

  1. Ch 4.
  2. Sl st in second ch from hook.
  3. Sc in next ch.
  4. Hdc in last ch.
  5. FO with a sewing tail.

Sew one wing on each side of the bee. Then sew the bee to the top right side of the elephant head, around R8-R10, just beside the hair tuft.

Hair Tuft

The elephant has a small black tuft on top of the head. Cut five strands of black yarn, each about 3 inches long.

  1. Insert the hook into the top center of the head around R3-R5.
  2. Pull one strand halfway through a stitch.
  3. Tie the two ends in a secure knot close to the head.
  4. Repeat with all five strands in a tight cluster.
  5. Trim the strands to about 0.5 inch long.
  6. Separate the yarn plies slightly to create a soft tuft.

Face Details

The expression should be gentle and calm. The eyes are glossy and low on the face, the eyebrows are small curved lines, and the mouth is very subtle. Do not over-embroider the face.

  • Eyes: use 8 mm safety eyes between R20 and R21, about 12 stitches apart.
  • Eye highlights: add one tiny white stitch on the outer upper edge of each black eye.
  • Eyebrows: with black thread, stitch one short curved line above each eye, about 4 rounds above the eyes.
  • Mouth: add a tiny curved stitch below the trunk if desired, but keep it very subtle.
  • Cheeks: optional soft pink blush can be added with textile-safe blush or light pink embroidery.

Small Garden Flower Pots

The image includes small crochet flower pots on the wooden table. These are optional accessories but help recreate the full spring garden scene. Make two or three pots in different sizes.

Small Pot

Use brown yarn and a 2.0 mm hook.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: BLO sc around. (12)
  4. R4: sc around. (12)
  5. R5: sc 3, inc, repeat around. (15)
  6. R6-R7: sc around. (15)
  7. R8: FLO sc around for rim. (15)
  8. FO and weave in ends.

Stuff the pot lightly. Add a dark brown circle inside as soil.

Soil Circle

Use dark brown yarn.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. (18)
  4. FO and sew the circle into the top of the pot.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Simple Red Flowers

Make three to five flowers per pot.

  1. With red yarn, ch 2.
  2. Work 5 sc into the second ch from hook.
  3. Sl st to close.
  4. FO, leaving a long tail.

Use green yarn or thin wrapped wire for stems. Sew or insert the flowers into the soil circle. Add small green leaf stitches near the base.

Blue Daisy Pot

For the blue flower pot, make one large blue flower and two small leaves.

  1. In MR: ch 2, dc, ch 2, sl st into ring, repeat 6 times.
  2. Pull ring closed.
  3. Add a yellow center stitch.
  4. Sew to a green stem and attach to the pot.

Joining the Head and Body

Before sewing, pin the head to the body. The trunk should point straight forward, and the ears should sit evenly on both sides. The head is large, so take time to center it above the cream collar and green overalls.

  1. Place the body upright with the front bib centered.
  2. Set the head on top so the bottom of the head covers the neck opening.
  3. Pin around the neck using at least 8 pins.
  4. Use the long gray yarn tail from the head to sew through the head and body stitches.
  5. Stitch around the neck twice for strength.
  6. Add extra stuffing into the neck area before closing the last gap.
  7. Secure the yarn with hidden knots and weave the tail inside.

The head should not wobble. If it leans forward, add more stitches at the back of the neck. If it leans backward, add more support stitches at the front under the trunk.

Arm and Strap Placement

After the head is attached, check the arms. They should hang down over the sides of the overalls but not cover the front flowers. The yellow bag strap crosses over one shoulder and across the chest, so it may pass over one arm slightly.

  • Sew the left arm slightly behind the front bib edge.
  • Sew the right arm similarly, keeping both hands visible.
  • Place the bag on the elephant’s right hip.
  • Bring the strap from the right hip to the opposite shoulder.
  • Tack the strap at the shoulder and side waist with hidden yellow stitches.

Optional Tail

If you want a tiny elephant tail visible behind the overalls, use gray yarn.

  1. Ch 7.
  2. Sl st in second ch from hook and across. (6)
  3. Cut three tiny strands of gray yarn and knot them at the end as a tassel.
  4. Sew the tail to the back lower body, just above the shorts.

The tail is mostly hidden by the overalls in the front view, so keep it small and simple.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the full doll from the front before weaving in every tail. The ears should be equal height, the trunk should sit centered, and the bag strap should create a clean diagonal line across the chest. Adjust small pieces before final knots are hidden.

Use black embroidery thread for the eyebrows. Make each eyebrow a gentle curved stitch about 0.5 inch long. Place them high enough to give the elephant a sweet, peaceful expression. Avoid making the eyebrows too dark or thick.

For the cheeks, add a tiny amount of soft pink blush under the eyes, or embroider two small pink stitches. The image has a very delicate face, so subtle details work better than heavy decoration.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not twist or wring the doll.
  • Let the elephant air dry flat on a towel.
  • Keep the removable hat separate while cleaning.
  • If safety eyes are used, this item is decorative and not recommended for children under 3 years old.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, firm, and securely attached.
  • The ears are large, pink inside, and evenly placed.
  • The trunk is centered and lightly curved downward.
  • The overalls have green and cream stripes across the body.
  • The straps are attached with two small buttons.
  • The yellow bag crosses the body diagonally.
  • The sandals show the pink toe pads clearly.
  • The bee is attached near the top hair tuft.
  • The straw hat has a green ribbon and small bow.
  • The flower pots are small enough to look like accessories beside the elephant.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, avoid machine washing. The large head, ears, trunk, and small accessories can shift if soaked too heavily. Use a damp cloth to clean dusty areas, especially the overalls, sandals, hat brim, and flower pots.

If the hat brim becomes curled, place it flat under a light book for a few hours after it is fully dry. Do not press the bee, flower bag, or embroidered flowers with heat, because small yarn details can flatten quickly.

Store the elephant upright in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Long sunlight exposure can fade the green overalls, pink ears, yellow bag, and tan hat. If storing for a long time, wrap the doll loosely in cotton fabric instead of plastic.
