Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written to create a soft knitted tiger prince doll inspired by the image. The finished doll has a seated-friendly but upright standing shape, a large expressive tiger head, a plump sweater body, tapered arms, straight pants, rounded slipper feet, and small arctic-themed props placed around the doll.

The tiger is worked mostly in the round on double-pointed needles or using the magic loop method. Small flat pieces are also used for the crown, sweater details, satchel flap, penguin face patches, and tiny accessory parts. The finished look depends on careful stuffing, neat color changes, and close facial embroidery.

  • Finished tiger height: about 11 in / 28 cm from slipper soles to top of head, not including crown points.
  • Finished head width: about 4.25 in / 11 cm across the cheeks.
  • Finished sweater width: about 5 in / 12.5 cm across the lower body when stuffed.
  • Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Main techniques: knitting in the round, increases, decreases, short colorwork floats, duplicate stitch, embroidery, mattress stitch, and small-piece assembly.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in golden tiger orange, about 85 yd.
  • Worsted weight yarn in deep arctic blue, about 90 yd.
  • Worsted weight yarn in warm white or cream, about 55 yd.
  • Worsted weight yarn in taupe beige for pants, about 45 yd.
  • Small amount of dark brown yarn for tail bands, stripes, and outlines.
  • Small amount of black yarn for eye accents and penguin details.
  • Small amount of pale pink yarn for nose, cheeks, and ice cream sprinkles.
  • Small amount of gray-beige yarn for the crown.
  • Small amount of white fluffy yarn or regular white yarn for pompoms.
  • US 3 / 3.25 mm double-pointed needles or long circular needle for magic loop.
  • US 2 / 2.75 mm needles for tighter small accessories.
  • Two blue buttons, about 12 mm wide, for the tiger eyes.
  • One small beige or wooden button, about 8 mm wide, for the satchel flap.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Black sewing thread and sewing needle for securing buttons.
  • Optional: small amount of cardboard or plastic canvas for satchel shaping.

Gauge

Gauge is important because the toy needs a firm fabric that holds stuffing without large gaps. Work a small stockinette swatch in the round if possible. The surface in the image is smooth, compact, and softly rounded, so avoid loose knitting.

  • Main doll gauge: 6 stitches and 8 rounds per 1 in / 2.5 cm in stockinette with US 3 needles.
  • Accessory gauge: 6.5 stitches and 9 rows per 1 in / 2.5 cm with US 2 needles.
  • Finished fabric: firm but still flexible enough to shape the cheeks, belly, sleeves, and slippers.

Color Notes

The doll uses a golden tiger head and paws, taupe pants, and a bright blue sweater. The sweater has cream and white bands, including polar bears across the front. For the cleanest result, knit the simple stripes in the round, then add the small bear bodies with duplicate stitch or intarsia-style stranded colorwork.

The tiger markings should not be random. Place them symmetrically around the eyes, cheeks, forehead, and sides of the face. The image shows dark curved stripes framing the blue eyes, short cheek stripes, a white muzzle area, and a pale eyebrow-like area above each eye.

Cream Muzzle Patch

The muzzle is not a separate long snout. It is a flat oval patch sewn onto the lower front of the head. It should sit between the eyes and chin, with the pink nose centered at the upper part of the patch.

  1. With cream yarn and US 3 needles, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: P all sts.
  3. Row 2: Kfb, K6, Kfb. 10 sts.

  11. BO all sts, leaving a long tail for sewing.
  12. Sew the patch to the lower face, centered over rounds 24-34 of the head. Keep the lower edge curved, not square.

Forehead and Cheek White Patches

The image has small pale areas above the eyes, like short white eyebrows. These soften the face and help the blue eyes stand out. Add them with duplicate stitch rather than separate pieces.

  • Above the left eye position, duplicate stitch a cream wedge over 5 sts wide and 3 rows high.
  • Above the right eye position, duplicate stitch the same wedge mirrored.
  • Use cream yarn to duplicate stitch 2 small cheek highlights, each 4 sts wide and 2 rows high, at the lower outside edge of the muzzle.

Ears

The ears are small rounded tiger ears set high at the sides of the head. They are golden outside with cream inner centers. Each ear is lightly stuffed or folded so it stands out from the head.

  1. With golden orange and US 3 needles, CO 12 sts.
  2. Rows 1-3: Work St st, beginning with a P row.
  3. Row 4: K1, Kfb, K8, Kfb, K1. 14 sts.
  4. Rows 5-7: Work St st.
  5. Row 8: K1, SSK, K8, K2tog, K1. 12 sts.

Body with Taupe Pants Base

The body is hidden mostly under the sweater and pants, but the shape matters. It should be pear-shaped, wider at the sweater hem and narrower at the neck. The lower half is taupe to match the pants, while the upper half is covered by the blue sweater body.

  1. With taupe yarn and US 3 needles, CO 12 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st around. 24 sts.

  21. Rnd 38: Repeat K2, K2tog around. 18 sts.
  22. BO all sts loosely. This neck opening will be sewn under the head.

Blue Arctic Sweater

The sweater is the most important clothing feature in the image. It has ribbing at the hem, a blue body, cream and white patterned bands, and two white polar bears facing inward across the front. The sweater is knitted as part of the body, then decorated with duplicate stitch and small surface embroidery.

Sweater Ribbed Hem

After the body is knitted, add the hem directly over the blue section at the waist. This creates the chunky ribbed lower edge visible above the pants.

  1. With deep arctic blue, pick up 44 sts around body round 17, where the blue sweater begins.
  2. Work 5 rounds in K2, P2 rib.
  3. BO in rib, keeping the edge stretchy.
  4. Fold the ribbing slightly downward so it overlaps the top of the taupe pants by about 2 rounds.

Sweater Colorwork Bands

Use duplicate stitch if stranded colorwork feels difficult on a small stuffed toy. Place the bands carefully so the sweater looks balanced from the front. The image shows a cream band near the shoulders, a polar bear band at the middle, and smaller snow motifs near the cuffs and hem.

  • Upper cream stripe: duplicate stitch 2 full rounds in cream around body rounds 25-26.
  • Upper blue separator: keep 2 blue rounds visible below the cream stripe.
  • Snowflake band: on body rounds 22-24, duplicate stitch small cream V shapes every 6 sts around.
  • Polar bear band: place the bears on the front center over body rounds 19-23.
  • Lower cream stripe: duplicate stitch 2 full rounds in cream around body rounds 18-19, just above the ribbed hem.

Front Polar Bears

There are two white polar bears on the sweater front, facing each other. Make each bear with duplicate stitch over the blue sweater. The bears should be blocky and simple, like knitted motifs, not realistic animal shapes.

  • Left bear body: duplicate stitch a cream rectangle 7 sts wide and 4 rows high.
  • Left bear head: add 3 cream sts at the right upper end of the rectangle.
  • Left bear legs: add 2 cream sts below the body at the left side and 2 cream sts below the body at the right side.
  • Right bear body: mirror the left bear, placing it 5 sts away so the two noses face inward.
  • Bear eyes: add one tiny dark brown stitch on each head.
  • Bear noses: add one tiny dark brown stitch at the inward-facing edge of each head.

Sweater Collar

The collar is tall and ribbed, sitting under the tiger’s chin. It is deep blue and should look cozy and slightly thick.

  1. With deep arctic blue, pick up 24 sts around the body neck opening.
  2. Work 7 rounds in K2, P2 rib.
  3. BO loosely in rib.
  4. After sewing the head on, pull the collar upward slightly so it touches the bottom of the muzzle.

Legs and Pants

The pants are taupe beige and worked as two straight legs attached under the body. Each leg is rounded but not overly chunky. The blue slippers and golden tiger toes are added at the bottom.

Right Leg

  1. With taupe yarn and US 3 needles, CO 18 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-18: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 19: Repeat K7, K2tog around. 16 sts.
  4. Rnds 20-23: K all sts.
  5. Stuff lightly. Keep the leg straight, not bulbous.
  6. BO all sts, leaving a long tail for sewing to the body.

Left Leg

  1. Work the same as the right leg.
  2. Before sewing, compare both legs and add or remove a small amount of stuffing so they match.
  3. Sew each leg under the taupe lower body, leaving a narrow gap of about 3 sts between the legs.

Golden Feet and Blue Slippers

The slippers show blue sides, white trim, white fluffy pompoms, and golden tiger toes at the front. Each foot is knitted from toe to heel, with the golden toe visible inside the blue slipper.

Golden Toe Section

Blue Slipper Section

  1. Rnd 7: K all sts in blue.
  2. Rnd 8: K4, Kfb, K6, Kfb, K4. 18 sts.
  3. Rnds 9-13: K all sts.
  4. Rnd 14: K2tog around until 9 sts remain.
  5. Stuff the foot firmly, shaping the toe front round and the heel flat.
  6. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and secure.
  7. Make 2 feet.

White Slipper Trim and Pompoms

  • With cream yarn, duplicate stitch a thin line around the front opening of each slipper over round 7.
  • With cream yarn, embroider 3 small vertical claw marks on each golden toe.
  • Make 2 small white pompoms, each about 0.6 in / 1.5 cm wide.
  • Sew one pompom onto the outer side of each slipper near the ankle.
  • Sew the finished feet to the lower ends of the taupe legs, angling them slightly outward like the image.

Arms and Sleeves

The arms have blue sweater sleeves with golden tiger paws at the ends. The sleeves are rounded and slightly tapered. The paws are small, with cream claw embroidery at the tips.

Right Arm

  1. With golden orange and US 3 needles, CO 10 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-5: K all sts.

  5. Rnd 7: Repeat K4, Kfb around. 12 sts.
  6. Rnds 8-20: K all sts.
  7. Rnd 21: Repeat K4, K2tog around. 10 sts.
  8. Stuff the paw firmly and the sleeve lightly.
  9. BO all sts, leaving a long tail.

Left Arm

  1. Work the same as the right arm.
  2. Before attaching, embroider 3 cream claws on each golden paw.
  3. Sew arms to the sweater sides at a downward angle, beginning just below the shoulder band.
  4. The paws should rest close to the lower sweater edge, as shown in the image.

Sleeve Snow Motif

  • On each sleeve, duplicate stitch one cream stripe around the sleeve about 4 rounds above the golden paw.
  • Add 3 tiny cream V stitches above the stripe to suggest the small arctic sweater pattern.
  • Keep the decoration centered on the outside of each sleeve.

Tail

The tail is visible on the lower left side behind the body. It is curved, dark at the tip, and has tiger bands. Work it as a narrow tube and shape it while sewing.

  1. With dark brown yarn, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-4: K all sts.
  3. Change to golden orange.
  4. Rnds 5-8: K all sts.
  5. Change to dark brown.
  6. Rnds 9-11: K all sts.
  7. Change to golden orange.

  10. Rnds 18-20: K all sts.
  11. Stuff very lightly with small wisps of fiberfill.
  12. Cut yarn, draw through sts, and close.
  13. Sew the base to the back-left lower body. Curve the tail outward and slightly upward, then secure with two hidden stitches near the body.

Tiger Face Details

The face gives the doll its character. Work slowly and compare both sides often. Use pins to mark the eye, nose, mouth, and stripe placement before stitching permanently.

Eyes

  • Place the two blue buttons on the head front between rounds 21 and 24.
  • Set them about 9 sts apart, measured from center to center.
  • Sew each button securely through the head using black sewing thread.
  • Pull the thread gently to indent the eyes slightly, but do not distort the head.

Nose and Mouth

  • With pale pink yarn, embroider a small triangular nose at the top center of the cream muzzle patch.
  • Make the nose about 3 sts wide and 2 rows tall.
  • With dark brown yarn, stitch a short vertical line down from the nose.
  • Add two small curved mouth lines, one to the left and one to the right, forming a soft tiger expression.

Tiger Stripes

The stripes should curve naturally around the face. Do not make them too thick. The image shows fine dark brown markings that follow the cheeks, forehead, and sides of the face.

  • Forehead center: embroider one short vertical dark brown stripe, 4 rows long, above the nose.
  • Forehead sides: embroider 3 short V-shaped marks on each side of the forehead, each about 3 sts wide.
  • Eye outlines: add curved dark brown lines above and beside each eye, keeping them close to the button edge.
  • Cheek stripes: add 3 short curved stripes on each cheek, angled slightly downward toward the muzzle.
  • Side stripes: add 2 longer stripes near each ear, following the round shape of the head.
  • Lower chin: add 2 tiny cream duplicate stitches under the muzzle if the golden base shows too strongly.

Tiny Prince Crown

The crown sits on top of the tiger’s head. It is small, gray-beige, and shaped with simple points. It should look handmade and slightly soft, not stiff or metallic.

  8. Sew the flap to the back top edge of the bag so it folds over the front.
  9. Sew one small beige button to the center front of the flap.

Satchel Snowflake and Strap

  • With cream yarn, embroider a centered snowflake on the front: one vertical line 7 stitches tall, one horizontal line 7 stitches wide, and two diagonal lines 5 stitches wide.
  • Add tiny short stitches at the ends of the snowflake arms.
  • For the strap, make a brown 3-stitch I-cord about 13 in / 33 cm long.
  • Sew one end of the strap to each upper side of the satchel.
  • Stuff the bag lightly or insert a small rectangle of plastic canvas to keep it rounded.

Assembly Order

Assembly should be done in a clear order so the doll stays balanced. Pin every part before sewing. The image shows a centered head, arms angled downward, legs straight, and slippers turned slightly outward.

  1. Sew the legs to the underside of the taupe body, spacing them evenly.
  2. Sew the feet to the bottom of the legs with the golden toes facing forward.
  3. Sew the arms to the blue sweater sides, about 2 rounds below the shoulder line.
  4. Sew the tail to the back-left lower body and curve it outward.
  5. Sew the head to the neck opening, keeping the muzzle centered over the sweater front.
  6. Pull the ribbed collar up around the base of the head and tack it in place with small hidden stitches.
  7. Sew the ears high on the head and angle them slightly outward.
  8. Sew the crown to the top center of the head.
  9. Add all facial embroidery after the head is firmly attached, so the expression faces straight forward.
  10. Finish the sweater colorwork bands and polar bears if you have not already done so.
  11. Place the satchel, penguin hat, compass, and ice cream beside the tiger as matching props.

Detailed Knitting Notes for Accuracy

The tiger’s proportions should stay close to the image. The head is the largest feature, the sweater body is plump and rounded, and the pants are narrower than the sweater. The sleeves look soft and padded but should not be longer than the lower sweater edge.

Use firm stuffing inside the head and body. Loose stuffing will make the face collapse around the buttons and will reduce the rounded cheeks. For the arms, legs, and tail, use lighter stuffing so the smaller pieces remain soft and easy to position.

  • Head-to-body ratio: the head should be about 85 percent as wide as the sweater body.
  • Eye placement: eyes should sit slightly above the muzzle, not too high on the forehead.
  • Sweater hem: the ribbing should overlap the pants and create a thick blue border.
  • Polar bear band: keep the bears on the front center and do not wrap them too far around the sides.
  • Slipper angle: sew the feet so the toes point slightly outward, giving the doll a stable, charming stance.

Optional Finishing Texture

If you want the tiger to look closer to the photographed knitted toy, gently brush only the golden tiger areas with a soft toothbrush. Do this very lightly. The goal is a soft halo on the tiger face and paws, not a fuzzy surface that hides the stitches.

  • Brush the outer cheeks with 4 or 5 light strokes.
  • Brush the ears only at the outer golden edges.
  • Do not brush the sweater motifs, buttons, nose, or mouth.
  • Do not brush the penguin hat or compass because those details are small and can distort quickly.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the doll from the front before tying off the final threads. The blue eyes should be level, the pink nose should sit centered on the cream muzzle, and the dark tiger stripes should frame the face evenly. Add the crown last so it stays upright and visible.

  • Secure all buttons with strong thread.
  • Hide yarn tails inside the stuffed pieces.
  • Steam lightly only if needed, keeping steam away from the buttons and pompoms.
  • Use small hidden stitches to anchor the collar under the chin.

Care Notes

This knitted tiger prince is best used as a decorative handmade toy. Because it includes buttons, small accessories, and embroidered details, it is not recommended for babies or pets. Handle the crown, compass, and ice cream cone gently.

  • Spot clean with a damp cloth.
  • Do not machine wash if buttons or cardboard shaping are used.
  • Let the doll air dry flat after cleaning.
  • Reshape the head, sweater, and slippers while damp if needed.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished Arctic Sweater Tiger Prince in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep it in a breathable fabric bag if storing for a long time. Avoid plastic storage in humid areas because moisture can affect the stuffing and yarn texture.

  • Dust gently with a clean soft brush.
  • For small stains, dab with cool water and mild soap, then blot dry.
  • Do not rub the embroidered face because the stripes and mouth can shift.
  • Keep the doll away from high heat, strong sunlight, and rough handling.
  • Refresh the shape by gently squeezing the body and smoothing the sweater with your hands.

Your Arctic Sweater Tiger Prince is complete when the doll has a cozy winter look, a friendly tiger face, a small royal crown, and all the arctic accessories shown in the image. The finished set should feel playful, detailed, and handmade, with every knitted piece supporting the same charming snowy adventure theme.
