Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms and is designed to create a seated plush Scottish Fold cat inspired closely by the image. The body is rounded and softly stuffed, the head is larger than the body, the ears are small and folded, and the outfit is worked separately so the cardigan and shorts look layered.

The knitted surface should look smooth, dense, and slightly plush. Use small needles with light worsted or DK yarn so the stitches stay tight enough to hide stuffing. The cat is worked mostly in the round, while the cardigan pieces are worked flat and seamed for a handmade toy-garment look.

Finished Size

  • Finished cat height: approximately 10.5 inches / 27 cm from shoes to top of head.
  • Head width: approximately 4.75 inches / 12 cm across the cheeks.
  • Body height: approximately 4 inches / 10 cm before legs.
  • Arm length: approximately 3 inches / 7.5 cm.
  • Leg length including shoes: approximately 3.25 inches / 8 cm.
  • Crossbody bag: approximately 1.8 inches / 4.5 cm wide.
  • Garden props: small decorative accessories from 1.5 to 2.75 inches / 4 to 7 cm wide.

Skill Level

Intermediate beginner to intermediate. The main toy uses simple shaping, increases, decreases, seaming, embroidery, and small knitted accessories. The instructions include exact stitch counts, but you should already be comfortable knitting in the round and sewing stuffed pieces neatly.

Materials

  • DK or light worsted yarn in soft gray for the head sides, ears, tail, and lower striped leg sections.
  • DK or light worsted yarn in white or warm cream for the face stripe, muzzle, body base, paws, and socks.
  • DK or light worsted yarn in ivory cream for the cardigan.
  • DK or light worsted yarn in sage green for the shorts.
  • DK or light worsted yarn in tan brown for the shoes.

Gauge

  • Main stockinette gauge: 24 stitches and 32 rounds = 4 inches / 10 cm, knitted firmly in the round.
  • Cardigan gauge: 25 stitches and 34 rows = 4 inches / 10 cm in flat stockinette.
  • Important: Gauge does not need to match exactly, but stitches must be tight enough that stuffing does not show through.

Construction Notes

The cat is knitted in separate shaped sections: head, body, arms, legs, tail, ears, cardigan, shorts, shoes, bag, and small garden objects. This gives the finished plush a clean doll-like structure and makes it easier to match the layered look in the image.

The head is intentionally oversized and rounded. The white face stripe runs from the top center of the forehead down to the muzzle. The gray sides frame the eyes and cheeks, while the white muzzle is built out with two small pads so the face has a gentle Scottish Fold expression.

  • Stuffing style: Stuff the head firmly, the body medium-firmly, and the limbs softly.
  • Seaming style: Use mattress stitch for flat seams and whipstitch for small accessories.
  • Join angle: Arms point slightly downward at about 35 degrees. Legs angle forward so the cat sits naturally.
  • Face position: Eyes sit low and wide, giving the kitten a sweet, rounded expression.

Head

The head is worked in the round from the crown downward. You will use gray for the sides and white for the central face stripe. To keep the instructions manageable, the base head is knitted in gray first, then the white stripe is duplicate-stitched and lightly embroidered over the center front.

Round Gray Head Base

  1. With gray yarn and US 3 needles, CO 8 sts. Divide across needles and join to work in the round.

  23. Insert safety eyes between Rnds 22 and 23, placing them 12 sts apart across the front.
  24. Begin stuffing the head firmly, shaping the cheeks wide and round.
  25. Rnd 34: *k3, k2tog; repeat from * around. 32 sts.
  26. Rnd 35: *k2, k2tog; repeat from * around. 24 sts.
  27. Rnd 36: *k1, k2tog; repeat from * around. 16 sts.
  28. Add more stuffing so the head becomes a smooth oval with a slightly flattened face front.
  29. Rnd 37: k2tog around. 8 sts.
  30. Break yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and weave in securely.

White Forehead Stripe

The white stripe in the image is broad at the forehead, narrows slightly between the eyes, and blends into the white muzzle. Work it with duplicate stitch so it sits neatly on top of the gray base.

  1. Thread white yarn onto a tapestry needle.
  2. At the front center top of the head, duplicate stitch a vertical oval stripe over 8 sts across and 12 rnds tall.
  3. Start the stripe on Rnd 10 of the head and end it at Rnd 23 between the eyes.
  4. For Rnds 10-13, cover 6 center sts.
  5. For Rnds 14-19, cover 8 center sts.
  6. For Rnds 20-23, cover 6 center sts so the stripe tapers near the eyes.
  7. Keep the duplicate stitches smooth and slightly raised, following the knitted V-shapes.

Muzzle and Cheeks

The muzzle is made from two small white oval pads sewn side by side below the eyes. The center nose is pale pink, tiny, and triangular. The mouth is a short soft line, not a wide smile.

Left Muzzle Pad

  1. With white yarn, CO 6 sts and work flat.
  2. Row 1: k all sts.
  3. Row 2: p all sts.
  4. Row 3: k1, m1R, k4, m1L, k1. 8 sts.
  5. Row 4: p all sts.
  6. Rows 5-8: work in st st.
  7. Row 9: k1, ssk, k2, k2tog, k1. 6 sts.
  8. Row 10: p all sts.
  9. BO all sts, leaving a 10-inch tail for sewing.

Right Muzzle Pad

  1. Repeat the left muzzle pad exactly.
  2. Shape both pads with your fingers so each one forms a soft oval.
  3. Do not overstuff. Add only a pea-sized amount of stuffing behind each pad if you want a raised muzzle.

Attach the Muzzle

  1. Place the two muzzle pads below the eyes, centered beneath the white forehead stripe.
  2. The top edge of each pad should sit around Rnd 24 of the head.
  3. The inner edges should touch at the center front.
  4. Sew around each pad with small stitches, keeping the lower edge softly rounded.
  5. Embroider a pale pink triangle nose over the join between the two pads.
  6. Make the nose 3 sts wide and 2 rows tall.
  7. Stitch one short vertical line down from the nose using pink yarn.
  8. Add a very small curved mouth line with light gray or soft brown yarn.

  14. Break yarn and pull through final st.

Fold and Attach Ears

  1. Fold the top point of each ear downward toward the cast-on edge.
  2. Sew the fold lightly so the ear becomes a rounded folded flap.
  3. Place ears on the upper sides of the head between Rnds 11 and 17.
  4. Angle each ear outward slightly, about 25 degrees from the center top.
  5. Sew the cast-on edge securely to the head, keeping the folded tip visible.

Body

The body is mostly hidden under the cardigan and shorts, but it must be rounded and sturdy enough to support the outfit. Use white or warm cream yarn so the visible neck and paw areas match the image.

  1. With white yarn and US 3 needles, CO 8 sts. Join to work in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb around. 16 sts.

  14. Rnd 26: k all sts.
  15. Rnd 27: *k3, k2tog; repeat around. 32 sts.
  16. Rnd 28: k all sts.
  17. Rnd 29: *k2, k2tog; repeat around. 24 sts.

  19. Rnd 30: *k1, k2tog; repeat around. 16 sts.
  20. Rnd 31: k2tog around. 8 sts.
  21. Break yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and weave in.

Arms

The arms are white, simple, softly tapered tubes. They peek out from the cardigan sleeves, so the upper section can be hidden under the sleeve seam. Make two identical arms.

  2. Rnds 1-4: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 5: *k2, kfb; repeat around. 16 sts.

  8. Break yarn, thread through remaining sts, and pull closed.
  9. Flatten the cast-on edge and sew it closed.
  10. Repeat for the second arm.

Attach Arms

  2. Angle each arm downward at about 35 degrees.
  3. Sew the upper 0.75 inch / 2 cm of each arm firmly to the body.
  4. Do not sew the lower arm to the body; it should rest naturally over the cardigan sides.

Legs and Socks

The legs are short and chunky. A white sock section appears above each brown shoe, with a little gray-striped area visible at the top near the shorts. Work two legs.

Make 2 Legs

  1. With white yarn, CO 14 sts. Join to work in the round.

  2. Work an i-cord for 2 inches / 5 cm.
  3. BO all sts.
  4. Curve the cord into a handle and sew both ends to the opposite side of the can.

Joining Head to Body

The head should sit directly on the cardigan neckline, with no long neck visible. The face should look forward and slightly upward. Take time with this join because it controls the final expression and posture.

  1. Place the cardigan and shorts on the body first.
  2. Set the head on top of the body with the white face stripe centered over the cardigan opening.
  3. Pin the head in place if needed.
  4. Check that the arms hang evenly and the legs point forward.
  5. Using strong white or gray yarn, sew around the neck join twice.
  6. Insert the needle through the body shoulder area and lower head edge for a secure connection.
  7. Add a little stuffing into the neck gap before fully closing the seam.
  8. Shape the head so it remains wide and round, not tilted too far back.

Facial Eye Detailing

The eyes in the image are bright blue, glossy, and wide apart. If you use plain safety eyes, add blue embroidery around each eye to match the look.

  1. Place each eye between Rnds 22 and 23 of the head.
  2. Keep 12 sts between the inner edges of the eyes.
  3. Using blue yarn, embroider a neat ring around each eye.
  4. Make the ring 1 stitch thick and keep it close to the eye edge.
  5. Using black yarn, add one tiny upper lash stitch at the outer top edge of each eye.
  6. Using white yarn, add one tiny highlight stitch near the upper outer corner if desired.

Optional Face Shaping

For a sweeter face, lightly sculpt the eyes after the head is stuffed. This makes the cheeks appear fuller and helps the Scottish Fold face look soft and rounded.

  1. Thread a long strand of gray yarn through a tapestry needle.
  2. Insert from the bottom of the head and come out beside the first eye.
  3. Take a tiny stitch beside the eye and return to the bottom of the head.
  4. Pull gently, just enough to sink the eye slightly.
  5. Repeat for the second eye.
  6. Tie securely at the bottom and hide the knot inside the neck seam.

Cardigan Fit Adjustments

The cardigan should look roomy, not tight. The hem should cover the top of the shorts and flare slightly outward at the sides. The sleeves should cover the shoulder join and stop above the rounded paws.

  • If the cardigan is too tight, block it gently over the body before sewing the final side seams.
  • If the cardigan is too long, fold the hem up one row inside and tack it invisibly.
  • If the front panels overlap too much, sew the button band closer to the edge.
  • If the sleeves twist, tack them to the arms with one hidden stitch under each sleeve.

Embroidery Placement Guide

The embroidered details should feel like a tiny garden scattered across the outfit. Avoid making the flowers too large. The cardigan flowers should stay on the lower front panels, while the bag flowers should sit inside the round blue front.

  • Cardigan left panel: place flowers between Rows 7 and 17 from the hem.
  • Cardigan right panel: place flowers between Rows 6 and 18 from the hem.
  • Bag front: keep flowers below the pink flap line.
  • Head flowers: sew close to the folded ears, not on the center forehead.
  • Shoe flowers: place one on the outside edge of each shoe.

Blocking

Blocking should be gentle because this is a stuffed toy. Do not soak the finished cat. Instead, lightly steam the cardigan and shorts before final assembly, keeping the iron or steamer away from safety eyes and plastic pieces.

  1. Lay the cardigan flat before attaching it to the body.
  2. Pin the front panels so the lower corners are even.
  3. Steam lightly from above without pressing the fabric flat.
  4. Let the pieces dry completely.
  5. Shape the hat brim while slightly damp so it stays round.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Confirm that the shorts are sewn securely around the waist and that both legs point forward.
  2. Place the cardigan over the body and sew lightly at shoulders, sides, and neckline.
  3. Attach the head centered above the cardigan opening.
  4. Sew the arms so they rest over the cardigan sides.
  5. Sew the shoes to the lower legs and add white flower details.
  6. Attach the tail to the back-left side, curving it outward.
  7. Place the blue bag strap across the body and tack it invisibly at the shoulder.
  8. Sew head flowers beside the folded ears.
  9. Check the muzzle, nose, and mouth. Add tiny stitches if the expression needs more definition.
  10. Place the pumpkins, straw hat, and watering can beside the cat as separate display props.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with a damp cloth and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, buttons, or embroidered accessories are attached.
  • Let the toy air dry fully before storing.
  • Keep away from strong heat, direct ironing, and rough handling.
  • If made for a young child, replace safety eyes and buttons with embroidery for safer use.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is larger than the body and softly rounded.
  • The folded ears sit low and close to the head.
  • The white face stripe is centered between the blue eyes.
  • The muzzle pads are even and softly raised.
  • The cardigan has four small buttons down the front.
  • The floral embroidery appears on both cardigan panels.
  • The green shorts show clearly below the cardigan hem.
  • The brown shoes have white openings, straps, and tiny flowers.
  • The blue floral bag crosses from shoulder to hip.
  • The tail rests to the side near the bag.
  • The pumpkins, hat, and watering can are small separate garden props.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the rounded shape, store the cat upright or lying flat in a breathable cotton bag. Avoid compressing the head, ears, and bag for long periods because the stuffing may shift and flatten the facial shape.

For dust removal, use a soft dry brush and move gently in the direction of the knitted stitches. For small stains, dab with cool water and mild soap. Do not rub the embroidery, buttons, eyes, or flower decorations.

If the cardigan or shorts become wrinkled, use light steam from a distance and reshape with your fingers. Keep steam away from safety eyes and avoid soaking the toy. Allow all pieces to dry fully before displaying again.

Check the flowers, bag strap, buttons, and shoe decorations occasionally. If any small part loosens, sew it back immediately with matching yarn. This keeps the Garden Stroll Scottish Fold Cat neat, secure, and ready for display.
