This cheerful knitted yellow bird has a large rounded head, tiny body, sleepy embroidered eyes, rosy cheeks, an orange beak, black feather tufts, and a red bow. The sailor outfit includes a blue-and-white striped shirt, blue overalls, red neckerchief, navy crossbody bag, yellow sandals, a sailor cap, fishing rod, and a little blue fish in a white net.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Finished Size
The finished toy measures about 11.5 to 12.5 inches tall when made with DK yarn, 2.75 mm needles, and firm stuffing. The head is intentionally oversized, about 60 percent of the full height, to match the cute character style shown in the image.
- Head width: about 5.5 inches across after stuffing.
- Body height: about 3.5 inches before legs.
- Legs and sandals: about 2 inches tall together.
- Bag strap: long enough to cross from right shoulder to left hip.
- Sailor cap: removable and sized to sit beside the toy or fit loosely on the head.
Materials
- DK weight yarn in soft yellow for head, body, wings, and arms.
- Small amounts of orange yarn for beak, legs, and feet.
- Blue yarn for overalls and sailor outfit.
- Navy blue yarn for bag, strap, and cap trim.
- White yarn for shirt stripes, sailor collar, cap crown, and fish net.
- Red yarn for bow and neckerchief.
- Black embroidery thread or thin black yarn for closed eyes, lashes, brows, and head tufts.
- Light pink yarn or blush powder for cheeks.
- Pale yellow yarn for sandal straps.
- Light blue yarn for fish.
- Beige or tan yarn for fishing rod handle.
- Brown yarn for fishing rod grip.
- Four small buttons, two for overall bib and two for bag decoration if desired.
- One tiny anchor button or embroidered anchor for the bag.
- 2.75 mm double-pointed needles or small circular needles.
- 2.5 mm needles for straps and small accessories.
- Tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors, stuffing, sewing pins, and optional pipe cleaner for the fishing rod.
Gauge
Gauge is important because this toy needs firm stitches that hide the stuffing. In stockinette stitch, aim for about 28 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches. If your knitting is loose, use smaller needles. If your knitting is very tight, use needles one size larger.
Stuff every piece firmly but gradually. The head should feel round and smooth, not lumpy. The body and legs should be slightly firmer because they support the large head.

General Notes
Most body pieces are knitted in the round. Small flat pieces, such as bow loops, collar, sandal straps, and net strips, are worked back and forth. The round begins at the center back unless another position is stated.
The toy in the image has a very large egg-shaped head, narrow shoulders, short rounded wings, slim orange legs, and oversized sandals. Keep this proportion while stuffing and assembling. The head should tilt slightly to one side for the sweet sleepy pose.
For a clean finish, leave long yarn tails on each piece. Use these tails to sew pieces together. Pin all parts before sewing, especially the head, arms, overalls, bow, and crossbody bag.
Head
Use yellow yarn. Work in the round. The head is shaped like a tall rounded oval, widest around the cheeks and gently narrower near the crown.

Face Shaping
The face in the photo has soft cheek dimples and sleepy closed eyes. Use a long yellow yarn strand to sculpt before embroidering. Insert the needle at the bottom back of the head, come out where the left cheek should be, pull gently, then return near the same point. Repeat on the right cheek. Do not pull too tightly.
- Place the beak at the center front, about 2 rounds below the eye line.
- Place each closed eye about 11 stitches wide, angled downward toward the beak.
- Add three small lashes at the outer end of each eye.
- Embroider two short curved brows above the eyes with black thread.
- Add pink cheeks below the eyes, slightly outside the beak line.
Beak
Use orange yarn. The beak is small, round, and slightly pointed outward. Knit it firmly so it keeps its shape.
- CO 6 sts and join in the round.
- Rnd 1: K all sts. 6 sts.
- Rnd 2: Kfb in each st around. 12 sts.
- Rnd 3: K1, kfb, repeat around. 18 sts.

- Stuff lightly.
- Rnd 7: K2tog around. 6 sts.
- Cut yarn, pull through remaining sts, and close.
Sew the beak to the face with the rounder side outward. Flatten the back of the beak slightly as you sew. The beak should sit centered between the cheeks and under the sleepy eyes.
Head Feather Tufts
Use black yarn. The top feathers are short, upright, and separated into five strands.
- Cut five strands of black yarn, each about 5 inches long.
- Insert the hook or tapestry needle into the top center of the head.
- Fold each strand in half and pull the loop through one stitch.
- Pull the ends through the loop to knot securely.
- Trim the tufts to different lengths from 1 inch to 1.5 inches.
Body
Use yellow yarn for the upper body base. The body is small compared with the head. It should be pear-shaped, wider at the bottom and narrow at the neck.
- CO 12 sts and join in the round.
- Rnd 1: K all sts.
- Rnd 2: Kfb in each st around. 24 sts.
- Rnd 3: K all sts.

- BO.
Embroider one tiny black eye on each side of the fish. Use a short stitch for the mouth near the front. Keep the fish small so it fits inside the net.
White Fish Net
The net is a simple open lattice wrapped around the fish. It should look light and airy, not bulky.
- With white yarn, CO 4 sts.

Mini Anchor Embroidery
The sailor outfit includes tiny nautical details. Use dark blue or red thread for the small anchor on the shirt, and white thread or a tiny button on the bag.
- For the shirt anchor, stitch a short vertical line first.
- Add a small horizontal line near the top.
- Add two curved stitches at the bottom to make the anchor arms.
- Add one tiny red or navy stitch as the center point.
- Keep the anchor very small so it does not overwhelm the striped shirt.
Assembly Order
- Finish and stuff the head, body, wings, legs, and feet.
- Slide the striped sailor shirt over the body and sew it in place.
- Add the blue overall shorts over the lower body.
- Sew the bib to the front waistband and attach shoulder straps.
- Sew the legs under the body, then sew feet to the legs.
- Add sandal soles and straps to each foot.
- Attach sleeves to the wings, then sew the wings to the body sides.
- Sew the head to the neck opening. Tilt it slightly for the sweet pose.
- Sew on the beak, embroider closed eyes, lashes, brows, and cheeks.
- Add black head tufts and the red bow.
- Attach the red neckerchief at the front of the shirt.
- Add the crossbody bag and tack the strap across the chest.
- Finish the sailor cap, fishing rod, fish, and net as separate props.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Pin the head before sewing because the large head determines the final personality of the toy. The front should face slightly downward, with the closed eyes giving a gentle sleepy expression. Use small ladder stitches around the neck twice for strength.
For the eyes, use black embroidery thread. Make each eye a smooth curved line. Add three lashes at the outer corner. The lashes should angle upward and outward. Add two small eyebrow curves above the eyes, keeping them soft and relaxed.
For the cheeks, embroider several short pink stitches in an oval shape or gently apply safe fabric blush. Place the cheeks lower than the eyes and slightly to the sides of the beak. This makes the face look round and sweet.
After all details are attached, check the symmetry from the front, side, and top. The bow should sit high on the right side. The bag should rest at the left hip. The red scarf should remain visible over the striped shirt and under the bib straps.
Care Notes
- Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if buttons, blush, pipe cleaner, or small accessories are attached.
- Let the toy air dry flat on a clean towel.
- Reshape the head, bow, sandals, and bag while damp if needed.
- Keep small accessories away from very young children if buttons or removable props are used.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The head is large, smooth, and slightly taller than it is wide.
- The sleepy eyes are curved evenly and have clear black lashes.
- The orange beak is centered between the rosy cheeks.
- The red bow is sewn securely on the upper right side of the head.
- The striped sailor shirt shows above the blue overalls.
- The red neckerchief crosses neatly at the front.
- The navy bag strap crosses from shoulder to opposite hip.
- The sandals have visible yellow straps over orange feet.
- The sailor cap, fishing rod, fish, and net are finished as matching props.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the finished bird in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Strong sunlight may fade the yellow yarn, red bow, and blue sailor outfit over time. If the toy is displayed on a shelf, dust it gently with a soft brush every few weeks.
If the toy becomes flattened, gently massage the stuffing back into shape. Use your hands to round the cheeks, lift the crown, and smooth the overalls. Avoid pulling on the embroidered eyes, bow center, bag strap, or sandal straps.
For long-term storage, wrap the toy in clean tissue paper and place it in a breathable cotton bag. Keep the sailor cap, fish net, and fishing rod beside the toy so small props do not get lost or bent.
